Cristine Brache and Sigrid Lauren: Goodnight Sweet Thing

Two parts of the same mind in literal and psychic conflict

Premiering in Berlin at this year’s 3hd, Cristine Brache and Sigrid Lauren’s Goodnight Sweet Thing reflects on the complexities of masking and societal performance in three distinct yet interconnected tableaus that overlap historical time periods, customs, and traditions. Centered around a deconstructed Jello wrestling match, opponents Mary Magdalene and Nothing Girl—played by Betsey Brown and Emily Allan—are two parts of the same mind in literal and psychic conflict, while Joshua Weidenmiller’s role as both master and subject transforms with them. The performance art piece is adapted from Brache’s poetry collection of the same name, and intertwines poetry, movement, and a score by Ryan Woodhall to explore the internal battle for authenticity, and examines its complex relationship with societal pressures and authority.
