Turn AMC Characters: Ben Tallmage & Nathan Hale

You mentioned this prior in the long halemadge timeline (that the name?) about ben and the five stages of grief but I do not think I follow.. I want to hear!

I am actually really happy more are asking about the Halemadge timeline. So the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. 

After Nathan had died and Ben was in Washington’s office when Alexander Hamilton came in with news that he had been captured and hanged, Ben slides into denial. Ben stays in denial for a very long time (four years) and he cannot believe Nathan is dead, he refuses to cry about him, he refuses to speak about him or even mourn him because in his heart he thinks that Nathan is still alive. Ben loves Nathan so much that he actually became a part of him and because Nathan dies he chooses to hold onto that piece of himself. He grows resolute, he doesn’t talk much, he is serious and even a little bit snappy–some will blame it on the war, but it is really Nathan. So, for four years Ben lives in a state of denial about Nathan’s death though he knows truly he is gone he doesn’t dwell upon the idea. 

Flash forward to 1780, John Andre had just been captured and Ben is ultimately struck with how similar the case is with Nathan’s and this is the first time Ben begins to think of Nathan in a sort of… past tense sort of manner. But, because of Andre’s trial and such because is led to believe that Nathan is really gone and he is not coming back. Just a couple days before Andre’s death, Ben slides in to a state of bargaining he keeps thinks that there is something that is KEEPING Nathan from seeing him but still he has not fully seen that he is dead. 

The night before Andre’s execution, Ben hasn’t talked about Nathan to anyone but himself since September of 1776, he hasn’t cried over Nathan he just doesn’t. Andre changes that (read Drunk on the Taste of Your Lips for details), Andre knows he is going to die tomorrow and this fear resonates in him, Hamilton briefly tells of Nathan to Andre but it is Andre who sits Ben down and gets him to talk about what happened with Nathan. Ben starts talking of Nathan in the past tense and Ben starts to realize this. He reaches somewhat of a midway point between bargaining and anger with Andre when Lafayette comes in and tells Ben and Hamilton to go get some sleep (read Gold Flecks in Ink). 

By the point when Hamilton and Ben step out, Hamilton is curious and he gives his condolences for Nathan’s death which is on subject. Ben finally reaches the grief stage of ANGER and he is not only angry with Nathan, he is angry with himself (I’ll speak more about that in the second). Ben is angry with Hamilton for trying to butt into his private life, he is angry with Nathan who breaking his promise (Nathan’s last words to Ben were a promise–read Rose Petal Hands) and he is angry with himself for never opening his eyes an staying half asleep when Nathan finally did leave the tent and they never saw each other again. 

Even with Hamilton’s comfort, Ben goes back to his tent and the anger keeps shifting himself Nathan to himself, from Nathan to himself and he is so, so angry (a new fic is going to be coming out in a few days talking about this scene) and ultimately Ben will never stop. Instead of having it be anger, his anger at himself and at Nathan stops and grows into depression. This is a depression he will never grow out of. Ben never, ever reaches the acceptance part of the five stages of grief. Ben knows that Nathan is dead and he is so utterly torn at the prospect that he can never bring himself to get out of that depression stage. Ben never, ever learns to accept Nathan’s death. 

Even as he is married and loves his wife and his children, he will never get over his love for Nathan nor will he ever get over his death.
