PALAIS SANS SOUCI
located in the town of Milot in the Northern Department of Haiti, is a monumental building erected between 1810 and 1813 by King Henri Christophe and his Queen. It was built to rival the greatness and opulence of the renowned palaces of Europe, and to show that the black people had the power and the means to build a Versailles of their own.
With its impressive architecture, the Palace Sans Souci was a magnificent and awe-inspiring wonder. It featured a set of large courtyards, balconies, and terraces with a breathtaking view of the scenery. Inside, there were several grand halls and bedrooms with intricate designs and beautiful furnishings. But the most remarkable aspect of the palace was the grand staircase which led to the grand salon, where the King and Queen held their meetings and receptions.
Sadly, in 1842 an earthquake destroyed much of the palace and its greatness was reduced to ruins. Nevertheless, the ruins of the Palace Sans Souci remain majestic and hauntingly beautiful. In 1982, it was classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it continues to impress people from all over the world.

▌. 𝐕𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐨𝐮 . ▌
*𝕋𝕆𝕐𝔸*

BLACK HISTORY MONTH: A COLLECTION OF ARTWORK BY MONIQUE SERRES 4) Toussaint Louverture Oil on linen 26» x 40» Toussaint Louverture rises from his ashes to interpellate Haïti (represented by the man holding the flag attached to a sugar cane pole) on its past and its intention for its future. I created this painting in my studio. Since I did not have a live sitter, I got my inspiration from a painting by Alexandre Cabanel. He is a 19th century French painter whose work I admire. History of the Haitian Flag 🇭🇹🇭🇹 —————— The first purely Haitian flag was adopted on 18 May 1803, on the last day of the Congress of Arcahaie, Haitian lore holds that the newly appointed revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines created the flag by taking a French tricolor and ripping out the white center, which he discarded. He then asked Catherine Flon, his god-daughter, to sew the remaining bands together. The white pale removed, the blue was taken to represent Haiti's black citizens and the red the gens de couleur. . . After the overthrow of Emperor Faustin-Élie Soulouque in 1859, Haiti remained under the blue-red flag until Franc̦ois (“Papa Doc”) Duvalier came to power. He spoke of a “black revolution” for the nation and in 1964 altered the national flag to the black-red vertical stripes that had been used by Faustin-Élie, King Henry I, and Emperor Jacques I. Duvalier was succeeded by his son, Jean-Claude (“Baby Doc”), but the latter was forced to flee the country in 1986. As of February 25 of that year the old blue-red flag was reestablished. . . The coat of arms of Haiti was originally introduced in 1807, and has appeared in its current form since 1986. The coat of arms consists of a palm tree surmounted by a liberty cap and flanked by flags, rifles, hatchets, cannon, anchors, masts. The motto “L’Union fait la force” (“Union makes strength”) is also included. . . . The name Haiti (or Hayti) comes from the indigenous Taíno language which was the native name given to the entire island of Hispaniola to mean, "land of high mountains." ————- #haitianflag #haitianheritagemonth #haitianhistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CPAtNKagsGB/?utm_medium=tumblr

Did You Know? Shotgun Houses are said to be of Haitian Influence. In New Orleans, Chicago and many other cities across the U.S. have these style homes. They're said to be given their names because of the way the doors line up. One anecdote is if you have the front and back doors open then shoot a shotgun, the bullet will travel through both doors since they line up perfectly from opposite ends.
