The Haitian Mermaid: La Siren
Our talented student, Sephora, shares her final blog post before passing the torch to the next Student Spotlight. Discover the evolution of her Haitian Mermaid, La Siren. Watch her speed paint in Procreate. #HaitianArt #Mermaid #MarywoodArt #Illustration
Hello! It’s Sephora and for one last time, I will share a piece that I am thrilled I finally finished! I had started it around the beginning of my Fall semester last year but stopped when I realized I wasn’t too thrilled with the colors. But after looking at some old artwork it made me realize how far I’ve come and how much I wanted to keep improving. My biggest goal with my art is to finish…

🏴 🗝 • @vodou.renaissance Legba Petwo “Just as the Rada ritual begins by asking Legba (leg-BA) to open the gate to the other Lwa, we invoke Legba again, to open the door to Petwo. Whereas Legba in the Rada rite is an old man, Legba Petwo is generally depicted as a younger man, controlling the crossroads between the spiritual world and the physical world. Instead of Saint Lazarus, the Petwo version of Legba is most often depicted by Saint Peter, dressed in red and holding two keys next to a crowing rooster.” Excerpt from the book: "Haitian Vodou: An Introduction to Haiti's Indigenous Spiritual Tradition" by Mambo Chita Tann (@mambochitatann) Since Legba essentially rules communication and the gate, everyone has him [as opposed to other Lwa, who either walk with individuals or not]. He is one of the Lwa who shows up most often for people who are either new to vodou or whom the Lwa are trying to have come join the community because of this. If someone wants to be involved with vodou, Legba–along with ancestors–is the Lwa to pray to so that he opens the gates for that to happen and brings the opportunities to the surface, if vodou is where that person is meant to be. Anyone can offer prayers to him and light a white candle for his guidance. Beyond his gatekeeper duties, Legba is also a bit of a trickster but not really in a ‘ha ha funny’ sort of way. Most of his ‘tricks’ involve learning hard lessons in rather swift and potentially uncomfortable ways, rather than making you, or perhaps anyone but him, laugh. He can also be notoriously temperamental and easily offended. Don’t piss off Legba. He can work fast when he wants to, but when he is upset/offended/angry? He moves like lightening. When he slams the gate shut, it stays shut until he decides to open it again, if he does at all. No Lwa will cross him when he decides that things are not right, and he can be hard to appease if the offense is serious. #vodou #voodoo #ritual #haitianvodou #haitianvoodoo #spirituality #tradition #africanspirituality #art #haitianart #haiti (at AYITI) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjoNA0BrcO5/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

People that don’t get mentioned in the Haitian revolution
By Kevin André
Paul Louverture (ca. 1761-ca. 1803) was the younger brother of Toussaint Louverture. He was a Chief of Brigade in the Haitian Revolutionary army and served as the Brigade Commander of the Division de l'Est (Eastern Division) in 1802.

~obsesyon~
Onètman,
M’admèt ke m’ obsede ak souri’w.
Pafwa’m konn menm mande,
kijan Bondye fè kreye yon bagay konsa.
Lè’m wèw,
Se tankou zetwal yo k’ap file nan zantray mwen.
Em garanti’w,
si djab bare’w, La’p rale’w ,
li bo’w sou do je,
Epi l’ repanti.
Nom’w, tankou chante favori mwen.
E si m’ ta mouri On moun pale de ou sou tomb mwen.
Map resisite,
pou m’ mande l’ koze.
Onètman,
M’admèt ke m’ paka viv san ou.
E Pa gen anyen sou tè sa a,
kap ka chanje lanmou’m gen pou ou.

Happy New Year AND Haitian Independence Day! “This past year has been a wake up call for so many in the US in regards to racial issues. This has also driven a noticeable amount of new followers on my page (thank you profoundly and also please remain focused on issues that my art itself will never cover entirely). In that light, I invite you to take a minute to learn/commemorate a history of victory that is too often silenced.” “Haiti led the first successful slave rebellion in the world against the French (Napoléon Bonaparte’s army!), making that nation question hard their motto of ‘Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité’.” “Haïti won and proclaimed independence on January 1st of 1804.” “[Side note of admiration: Can we please kneel down to the fact that, of all the names Africans on the island could have given to the country, they decided to pay hommage to the Tainos (who had been massacred by the Spanish) by changing “Saint-Domingue” back to the native “Haiti”?]” “Ever since its independence, Haiti has suffered from what in my opinion has been one of the most illustrative forms of prolonged/historical/global systemic racism.” “I was born and raised in Haiti and a lot of my art is inspired either by lived experiences there, historical/literary stories from Haiti and my navigating the US as a Haitian ‘immigrant’.” “I thought I would share this little bit of history with you through my own words and invite you to learn about what is becoming a more researched part of world history.” “Words to type into your search engine:
The Haitian Revolution. Hope you enjoy and Happy New Year again! 🇭🇹” #SupportBlackArt #jolivert
