You and (Y/N) have left for Denmark; it’s a slightly weird feeling. You haven’t brought a girl around your family in a while, and this isn’t even a girl you’re dating. It’s the girl you knocked up. The girl who you accidentally knocked up after one night. The girl you are trying to navigate parenthood with, by not having conversations on parenthood or how that will look because neither of you wants to bring it up or start the conversation.

When you first found out about the pregnancy you wanted to separate yourself from her as much as possible without separating yourself from the baby. You didn’t think you’d talk or see her much throughout the pregnancy outside of doctors’ appointments. You would somehow work out a custody arrangement and have casual conversation during the exchanges. As you son grew up you’d see her at events, various hockey games, school functions but keep it friendly. Have a nice relationship with the woman you have a baby with, but keep your interactions surrounding your son.

Then you heard the heartbeat. That was the moment this became real for you. It wasn’t the lawyer telling you about the baby; it wasn’t Auston reading the paternity results. It was seeing the screen and hearing the heartbeat.

“You going to meet her parents before the baby comes then?” Mitch questions.

“I mean she hasn’t asked, but if she does I will for sure. Look I know this is hard but we are trying to figure this out. We’re going to be single parents; our families will help out from time to time. It’s good that she knows the people her baby is going to be around.”

As it gets later in the day you pull her into a small cafe along the canal for dinner. As you are finishing up and getting ready to pay the sun begins to set behind (Y/N), her beauty radiating. You look across and can’t stop smiling; you can’t believe this woman is having your baby. You hope he takes her heart, because even though she is gorgeous on the outside, her inner beauty shines more than ever.

A few days later you leave and head to Herning, you show her some of the areas you would hang out as a kid, where you went to school, played hockey. When you’re walking, you sometimes find your hand intertwined with hers, or your hand on the small of her back. The following day you are introducing her to your family. That night you take her to dinner at a small intimate restaurant, when you return to the room she wanders to the balcony. You join her wrapping a blanket around her shoulders to keep her warm, even though its summer in Denmark the night temperature hovers around 22°C and you know she gets cold easily.

She stares out at the night sky but you can’t break your eyes away from her, “so beautiful” she says. “Yeah” you respond, not talking about the surrounding view. You pull her into you and she looks up at you, you look into her eyes and down to her lips before finally forcing yourself to step back inside and head to the shower leaving her alone on the balcony. You stay in there a little too long, letting the water hit you as a million thoughts run through your head:

What was that? Staring into her eyes I wanted more, I wanted to kiss her and have her wraps her arms around me. I wanted to wake up with my arms wrapped around her like we have done this entire trip, but I want to do it every morning. Up until 20 minutes ago I hadn’t felt this way, or I didn’t believe I felt this way. That’s all there has been between you guys; the physical connection. You thought if anyone caught feelings it would be her, her pregnancy hormones likely influencing her to want more. I’ve done this before the casual no strings attached, except this had a big string, and every day he got a little bit bigger.

For some reason you wanted to lean down and kiss her, but kiss her passionately and with meaning. You had this urge to pull her closer and carry her to bed and kiss every inch of her. When you finally turn off the shower and make it to the bedroom she is asleep. You crawl in on your side of the bed, after a bit you manage to fall asleep.

The next night you have dinner with your family which you think you are more nervous than (Y/N). Your siblings you aren’t worried about, it’s your parents. Your mom is genuinely interested in getting to know the person you are having a baby with; you hope it helps her accept the situation. She hasn’t said anything to you but you know she has struggled with how her first grandchild is being brought into the world. She had a lot of questions for you, about the situation and (Y/N). Who she was, what she was like, a million questions, so maybe this will put her at ease. You’re father however had been quiet about this situation since you told him, that makes you uneasy.

After dinner begins the questioning, everything seems to be going fine until your mom asks what will happen if you don’t stay in Toronto. You were hoping for an extension but talks weren’t going the best, and you were beginning to think it won’t be happening.

You stroke her hair, as you hold her tight never wanting to let her go.
