Everyone else would happily congratulate you and Haena, even if they were a bit upset that Haena hadn’t decided to be with them.

And so your relationship began.

You and Haena would go on dates to places like amusement parks, Regular parks, and cafés.

Haena would prefer bigger and faster rides at amusement parks, and she gets really happy if you join her on them.

If you don’t like big rides, She’d be a little bit disappointed but stil be happy to go on smaller and slower rides with you.

If your scared of big rides, she would try and help you get over your fears, but wouldn’t force you to do anything you didn’t want to do.

Dates at parks usually are just the two of you playing catch or talking on the benches.

In the case of you two going somewhere that required someone to pay, you’d probably pay together.

If the Two of you go to the same school, She would probably make you lunch.

Sometimes the two of you will eat lunch together, most likely because hyeonji ran away when you Haena/you joined Haena/you during lunch.

Haena is always willing to lend a helping hand if you need any, as long as it’s something she’s able to help with.

If you dont do well in school, Haena is will to tutor you and study with you.

She’d explain all the problems you didn’t get to you, and you could work through the ones you both didn’t understand together.

Haena would research facts about what kind of monster you are, just so she could be prepared incase anything strange happens to you.

She trusts you enough to confide in you about her suspicions about being a monster, and how she feels about it before she tells anyone else.

Haena isn’t the biggest fan of PDA, the most she’ll do in public is holding your hand or hugging you.

If she ever had any marital arts competitions, she’d save you a good spot.

Since the two of you live together, there will be times where you go to the backyard and just look at the stars together.

If you are a monster who can get rid of ghosts, she’s counting on you to protect her from them.

She wouldn’t want you to get hurt because of her, so she’d try her best to protect you.

If you ever got hurt because of her, she’d be the first one to try and patch you up, as long as it wasn’t something the research lab needed to deal with.

She doesn’t say I love you too often, but when she does, you know she really means it.

Haena is overall a really caring and cool girlfriend that you’d be lucky to have.

This poses a big risk of the two of you being caught, so you aren’t able to stay out for long periods of time.

On dark nights, Reynold would sneak the two of you out to secluded lakes and river banks for dates. He’d have the chef prepare picnic baskets, but never explain why he needed them.

If he doesn’t take you to a small lake or river bank, he’d take you somewhere outside of Eckart territory so it would be harder for anyone to recognize him.

On these dates you’d confide in each other about any regrets ,fears ,worries , or joys you had in mind as you looked around the area.

Reynold would tell you about how he regrets losing Evonne on that day, or if it’s a little bit later in time, how he regrets treating Penelope the way he did.

He would also make sure that no one of higher authority in the Eckart duchy was abusing their power against you while on these dates.

You might try and convince him to treat Penelope a bit better, but there’s only so much you can do if you don’t want to risk losing your job and your partner.

On normal days where you were busy working at the mansion, He probably wouldn’t bother you too much given that your most likely working with other servants.

He’d avoid putting anything that you had given to him in his room, due to risk of it being found if someone else was assigned to clean his sleeping quarters that day.

Reynold would also be careful with giving you gifts, because if he gave you anything too expensive it would raise suspicion as to where you had gotten it from.

There would be no PDA in the relationship, given since it is a secret relationship, but even if It wasn’t he would be too embarrassed to do PDA.

the case of BLACK ROSE is a mystery in the kpop industry. the girls appeared completely out of nowhere, no previous industry experience or tv appearances, debuting as a six memebr group on may 26th, 2022 with the ep, bring me to life. public information about their label is little to none. fans have done relentless amounts of research only to come up with nothing. all anyone really knows it’s that BLACK ROSE is a group with interesting members and an expensive budget.

BLACK ROSE was curated by a woman with a vision. a woman by the name of jeong misa. misa has turbulent history in the k-pop industry—something she’d prefer to keep under wraps. allegedly, she was a creative director for another group but abandoned that project because things went south. allegedly though!

despite having zero pre-debut hype, BLACK ROSE made waves during their debut era. debuting with a sultry vampire concept that stood out from the wave of “y2k” and brighter concepts at the time. since the arrival of BLACK ROSE, they’ve solidified themselves as a prominent girl group in the entertainment industry through their music, controversies, and questionable success.

Quarterly Debut Review: Q4 2024

Quarterly Debut Reviews are a supplementary series to my biannual Periodic Rookie Group Reports, which are published quarterly. Each installment covers three rookie groups that debuted over the past three months. For the eighth installment, I covered ANGEL NOISE (October), izna (November), and T:EV (December).

October / ANGEL NOISE Debut: October 1, 2024 Debut Song: "TOY TOY"

It is not clear how, in the video for their debut single, the chibi versions of the Angel Noise members Haena and Kepi end up in an alternate world, only that one second Haena is sitting on her bed texting and next she, dressed in a magical girl-esque battle costume, is dropped in front of a row of claw machines. At first, it looks like the claw machines are full of toy dolls until it is revealed in a horror-style twist, softened by the animation style and color palette, that they are real people who have been turned into dolls.

This is not the work of any mad scientist but a byproduct of their actions (and a function of a clumsy metaphor). Dolls are what people turn into when they chase trends, emulating and buying what they see everyone else doing. This fate could have befallen members had they chosen to conform, but they do not. Instead, Kepi pushes over one of the dolls, being supported by a doll stand, dancing in their place as Haena sings, “Hey mama mama, I'm not a toy/Oh ma oh ma oh mama I'm not a doll/hey mamama I'm not a toy”.

Angel Noise is not the first group to utilize the doll concept this way or even for this metaphor, but their use does have a particular resonance given its timing. Between the Hybe-New Jeans situation and the KG-JYP Entertainment situation, the industry has been in the midst of a reckoning regarding control and power differentials. Whereas labels expect idols to behave as dolls that they can act upon in exchange for the fulfillment of their dream and success, idols are increasingly questioning the cost of this arrangement and fighting for an alternative.

That is another way to read Angel Noise's declaration that they are 'not a doll'. Not only as a commitment to maintaining their own identity and color but also a refusal to yield to the status quo.

November / izna Debut Date: November 25, 2024 Debut Song: "IZNA"

In theory, Mnet's Produce franchise is dead, but in reality, five years after the scandal, Mnet continues to benefit from the show. In the early seasons of Produce, Mnet sold agencies and participants on the line that even if they were eliminated or not among the winning group, they would still receive a consolation prize: "exposure." This, however, was quickly exposed as an untruth, as most participants who did not win did not springboard to success, although by the time that came into focus, it no longer mattered. They have a track record of successful groups like izna created out of survival shows whose origins offer the tempting possibility that that could be you.

That was more or less the message of one of their audition announcement videos for the second season of Mnet's survival show, I-LAND2: N/A, which aired from April to July 2024. After opening with an orange ellipsoid shape, upon which scenes of ENHYPEN, the winning group from the first episode of I-LAND, are shown, a cube containing that same ellipsoid comes into focus against a sparkly pink mountainscape. "GROUNDBREAKING ADVENTURE BEGINS" and “Ready to be the biggest K-pop girl group of 2024?” flash on the screen quickly. Then the final call to action: as the background fades to black, below the white cube and ellipsoid, reads "Join us now" with the website for the audition application.

This is a compelling sell and accounts for why survival shows have, for better or worse, been able to find participants. Despite revelations about the conditions and treatment of contestants (including on this season of I-LAND) in an industry where success often hinges on chance and survival shows offer the promise of a concrete debut to those who make it to the final group, why not audition? Much like with their initial promises of exposure, there is always the chance that you could be the one to make it through the audition to the show itself and eventually the group. For the more than 20,000 applicants, who Mnet said applied, that is more than enough.

December / T:EV Debut Date: December 5, 2024 Debut Song: "Summer Day Story"

Congratulations, T:EV !

You were one of the final groups to debut in 2024, a year that, despite early signs that things may be improving for boy groups whose debut numbers had declined, ultimately did not. In comparison to the previous year, where boy groups had increased for the first time in three years, they once again dipped, even as girl group totals remained mostly steady.

But don’t worry, T:EV; it is nothing you or any other boy group did. Instead, the issue is, at least in part, systemic. As I noted in a previous post, agencies have struggled to attract trainees, especially males.  According to Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA)’s 2023 Pop Culture & Arts Industry Survey, which surveyed 2,753 agencies, the number of trainees affiliated with agencies has decreased since 2014. In fact, between 2020 and 2022, numbers dropped from 1,895 to 1,170. This decline has been particularly significant among male trainees, who not only accounted for a smaller number of trainees (512 male trainees versus 659 female trainees) but experienced a greater decline than their female counterparts.   

The 2023 Pop Culture & Arts Industry Survey attributes the decline in trainees to rising costs. Even if a label employs the break-even method where trainees pay back the money for their training costs through their post-debut earnings, agencies still must lay out the money initially. Taking on trainees then becomes a matter of cost-benefit analysis, with agencies weighing whether increasing their roster or cutting trainees makes the most sense for their bottom line.

Even if their analysis comes out on the side of increasing their roster of trainees though, agencies would have a tough time finding them, particularly male trainees. According to a July 2024 Korea Herald article,

"K-pop agencies report difficulties in finding male trainees, both in quantity and quality, as many young men now prefer to become influencers or YouTubers, which potentially offer greater profit and more freedom."

This same article quotes an official from a music label who notes that "been about two to three years that the number of male trainees has been reduced by more than 30 percent."

The obvious solution to this problem is not one that agencies will like or be willing to entertain. Still, it is necessary if they want to reverse this trend—improve the conditions and process of becoming and being an idol less terrible. To figure out how to do this, agencies should ask idols for their input, although I have a few ideas of where they could start: end the break-even repayment system; fairer profit sharing; and allow idols to have more control and input over their work.

background:

the youngest child of house tai, the beloved and doted upon little lady of dragonstone. dragonstone may have been in the cold northern regions, but it was still a major port city. haena grew up surrounded by bustling port workers and foreign workers, absorbing every story and detail with gleaming, curious eyes. she was always a lover of stories, and the best storytellers always came off the ships in her family’s harbor. 

she’s a bright and vivacious young girl, an adventurer in the making. while she loved to spend her free time climbing up trees and exploring every nook and cranny dragonstone had to offer, she always found her way back home. she used to follow her brother around all the time, playfully called his little shadow whenever he was home. he always had the best stories, and treats hidden for her in his sleeves.

but this wouldn’t be an interesting story if it was all happiness, would it? no, because at eleven years old, the house of tai is shaken by the execution of its second child, then the death of its head of house.

when her brother died, it was like something inside her died too. a break in her body, fractured by grief that was too big for her chest. there was no outlet, no way to process the pain she was carrying around. for the weeks after his execution, she could hardly be comforted. a shell of her former self, she became a ghost in her own home. curled up in tears in his old bedroom, until her muffled sobs turned into screams. 

she learns to live with it. somehow. its a constant weight in her chest that she carries around, a burden she has learned to breathe with. her grief lends to rage, a drive to never feel so helpless again. 

she made a monster of her grief, until it consumed her whole. 

maybe it would have been fine, if her rage wasn’t targeted at the crown. at the royalty their house is sworn to serve. at the whole structure that allowed a king to learn an art from his loyal vassals, only to ban them from the very thing they lovingly shared with him, and years later, sentenced her brother to death. 

yeah, that wasn’t really gonna fly in the fire nation even if she kept it more or less under wraps enough not to be setting off alarms about an unhinged teenage girl who daydreamed about killing the fire lord in various gruesome and creative ways! 

basically, her mom sees all the gasoline she’s filled herself with and was like oh i have a good idea, let’s deal with this is by shipping her off to a foreign nation and marrying her off to a random man she’s never met!

spoiler: it was not a good idea

lord lee kihyun embodied his element. he was steadfast and unwavering, as consistent as the stone he worked. these were admirable traits, ones that lended well to his career and loyalty to the earth kingdom’s royal family. they may have been good ones in a husband, at least, one that wasn’t such a traditionalist. he had a specific idea of what his new fire nation wife should be like. pretty as a picture, quiet, obedient. and submissive. that last one was very important.

and guess which one haena will literally never be!

the long story short is: kihyun and haena did not get along. during the long and lonely days and weeks and months she was there for a ‘courtship,’ he would spend his days either ignoring her existence or micromanaging and criticizing her every move. there was no winning in his eyes, only her sins.

one day after their marriage, kihyun tragically ( and mysteriously hoho ) dies late at night. he was a bit of a lightweight, you know? it was a point of teasing amongst his friends, how the ever stoic and steady lee kihyun would become hazy and easily flustered with just a few drinks. poor haena tried to get him back to their room, but when she left to find someone to help her ( he was just so much bigger than her, nearly twice her size it seemed like some days, she had to have someone help her carry around this massive man who was so much stronger and larger than her!!! ), they returned to find him on the ground outside, fallen from a balcony in his drunken stupor.

people love to gossip, and there was no hotter gossip than the newly widowed lady haena and the lack of witnesses to her husband’s death. everyone knew she wasn’t happy in the earth kingdom. some people thought “poor haena, lost her husband a day after they were married. a widow at twenty three. most of her peers aren’t even wed yet at that age.” most were more cynical, cycling rumors and theories as to what happened. 

between court ladies, they whisper “i heard lady haena murdered him for love. isn’t it just so tragic and romantic? she killed for her lover back home, the one ripped away from her through this marriage. now she returns home to him, hands stained bloody. will the embrace be as sweet as she imagined it?”

soldiers training in the courtyards say otherwise between parries. “she’s fire nation, isn’t she? all that hunger for power, i heard her parents basically let the first person who expressed interest have her because she was so much trouble back home. now they’re getting her back, hungry for more than she’s ever been destined for and cocky enough to get away with murder.”

a palace maid says to another, passing plates of food between bustling hands. “i heard she did it just because. just to know she could do it.”

came back to the fire nation two weeks ago, after three months of “mourning” aka investigation into his death. results? inconclusive. there was nothing to prove she did it. nothing to prove that she didn’t. 

the rumors follow her home, every action another piece of evidence for someone’s personal theory. maybe she didn’t cry enough at the funeral. maybe she wasn’t dressed appropriately. maybe she was too wracked by her grief and shock she couldn’t do anything but be moved across seas. everything was proof for a crime no one could solve.
