Hardraw Force to Thwaite

August 16: Hardraw Force to Thwaite - nine miles

Weather - Rain

Companion - Jon

Two weeks ago the rail tracks were buckling in the heat as Britain sweltered in the hottest day ever recorded.

So how is it that just two days after the Grouse shooting season started - symbolising another milestone of the summer - I’ve unpacked my rucksack at the end of a nine-mile section of the Yorkshire Dales Pennine Way walk and I have not one item of clothing that has survived the monsoon rain that permeated every pore of my waterproofs and back pack.

Arriving at the grandiosely named Kearton Country Inn and Hotel in the tiny hamlet of Thwaite, soaked to the skin, we asked they had any clothes drying facilities - dry room, tumble dryer? No!

No? How can the answer be a negative? And with such indifference.

So we are either facing a second day to reach Bowes- 15 miles away in sodden clothes tomorrow - or maybe we’ll try extreme naked walking.

The latter would probably by ok as what should ordinarily be a well trodden Pennine Way at this time of year was deserted of any living human soul during our trek from Hardraw Force to Thwaite today - no-one- noe persona - deserted walkways - never come across that so far on this mission. Maybe they’d read the weather forecast as we had done but instead of optimistically thinking it would be ok they had more sense and stopped at home to pay scrabble.

So, as you’ve guessed, with my most frequent Pennine Way companion walking by my side, Jon, we set off with spirits high on this stage - to complete one entire side of the Pennine Way Central section of the map.

I say high spirits and meant it. For having made an inspired purchase at the local grocery story in nearby Hawes, as we summitted the highest point of this section at Great Shunner Fell, we cracked open our miniature bottle of Kendal Mint Cake vodka! Yes, liquid Kendal Mint Cake, steeped in vodka - whoever dreamed up that idea deserves to be minted, knighted, beatified - pure deliciousness in a bottle.

As the conversation - unsurprisingly focused on how there was so much rain on this high-peak summer walk, I started to recollect the fact that I don’t think I have had one stretch of the Pennine Way with Jon when we haven’t had to dive into our waterproofs - maybe I need a new walking companion.

I mean to say, the route is well laid out, paved for much of the way - but I couldn’t find any symbols on my OS map for a running stream flowing from Hadraw to Thwaite underfoot - and I’m sure it was flowing uphill as well as down.

Apart from the incessant, interminable precipitation, the way was marked by what could only be described as nature’s equivalent of roadkill - the death count started off quite minor with a meat-cleaved wing bone from a small bird. As we ascended the body count became more substantial. Second victim was a bird’s skull still attached to the skeleton of its backbone - a spectacular specimen actually that would have held its place in the natural History Museum.

Third creature to have met an untimely death was a rabbit - still in some state of decay - and fourth coming quickly after now - also a rabbit - and seeming quite freshly culled.

I was beginning to think we getting dangerously close to the killer of the Pennine Way - and thoughts of the Hound of the Baskerville flooded by mind. The carcasses were increasing in size - what would be next? The mist was rolling in and the rain was impairing our visibility. Was that a baying howl I heard above the din of the crackle of the rain pelting my waterproof hood. I could hear shots in the distance - relax - I convinced myself it was the grouse shooting season after all.

I’d love to be able to tell you of the spectacular views over the Yorkshire Dales landscape - but there was nothing to be seen below the cloud level that brushed the tops of the hills as we undulated our wa onwards to Thwaite.

Tomorrow we are heading to Tan Hill - the highest pub in Britain and onwards to Bowes. I may just have to wear the towel from the hotel room to cover up my modesty unless our clothes dry out.
