Four years ago Hendrik Weydandt was still playing in the district league. He was supposed to join the Hannover 96 U23 in the summer and later take over his father’s tax office. But on Friday Weydandt will meet the 96 pros at the BVB (8.30 pm in the LIVETICKER).

They still exist, the romantic football stories in the tough business Bundesliga. The fact that one of them is playing in Hanover this season of all places is at least a whim of fate in view of the fierce struggle of 96 President Martin Kind against the abolition of the 50+1 rule.

There at Robert-Enke-Straße 3 they are familiar with the trials and tribulations of a footballer’s career. Before the season, for example, coach Andre Breitenreiter made Michael Esser his new number one. Twelve years ago, the 30-year-old goalkeeper was the keeper of VfB Habinghorst, a district league team from Castrop-Rauxel. Esser, then still weighing 120 kilograms, made it into professional football via detours.

The word “fairy tale”, however, never came up in view of Esser’s way into professional football. If they talk about Hendrik Weydandt in Lower Saxony and in Germany at all, however, it is on everyone’s lips. Last Saturday, sports director Horst Heldt described the story of the 23-year-old striker as a crazy fairy tale.

Weydandt, who kicked four years ago in the district league in the Hanover region, had previously taken the lead against Werder Bremen. It took him 75 seconds to score his first Bundesliga goal on his debut.

Already at the 6:0 of the Hanoverians in the DFB Cup against the Karlsruhe SC came Weydandt, saw and scored – and even twice. “A madness story,” said Breitenreiter. Which the coach only made possible when he brought Weydandt to the professionals in the preparation from the U23.

The 1.95-metre-high striker was only supposed to strengthen the Bundesliga team’s second guards. Hanover had become aware of Weydandt after the good performances at the neighbouring regional league team Germania Egestorf-Langreder.

He had shot Germania into the 4th league two years earlier with a double in the Oberliga delegation against SV Eichede and impressed with 27 goals in the following two regional league seasons: “Hendrik had many opportunities to change,” says Jan Zimmermann, his former coach in Egestorf. However, because of his proximity to friends, family and home, he decided on Hannover II.

But as thoughtful as Weydandt’s decision was, it turned his life upside down. The riders of the masses were troubled. Hanover had “not been well enough positioned in the offensive sector at the beginning of the preparation”. That’s why they wanted to “just take a look” and see whether Weydandt could also bring his goalscoring qualities to the professionals.

Weydandt could and scored ten times in nine test matches. From day one, Weydandt presented himself very well, “not only on the pitch, but also as a type,” the coach sums up. The 23-year-old is humble and modest and has worked hard for everything that has just happened to him. “That’s why it’s no coincidence,” says Breitenreiter.

Hard work is no stranger to Weydandt. “The move from the district league to the 5th league was not to be sneezed at,” says Zimmermann about the striker’s first major career leap. But “Henne” is a determined person who has stuck to his guns, “lost a few kilos” and has constantly developed. In 2014, that was. Weydandt left his youth club Groß Munzel at the age of 19 and joined Germania from the neighbouring village.

Marco Schikora only appreciates why he has played for so long with a club in a circle league despite his undeniable qualities. Weydandt’s former team-mate at Egestorf, however, can imagine “that he stayed in Groß Munzel for so long because he wanted to play a little longer with his friends”. Weydandt is “a bit of a creature of habit,” Schikora told the sports buzzer.

When asked about Weydandt in Barsinghausen, almost 25 kilometres from the HDI Arena, he is repeatedly mentioned in the same breath as a world champion. “I definitely trust him to do it like Miroslav Klose did back then,” says his first coach at TSV Groß Munzel. Gustav Kuhn had already said that Weydandt could do it.

A direct comparison with Klose is still not possible, but parallels are obvious. Klose also played in the district league at the age of 20. One year later he made his Bundesliga debut for FC Kaiserslautern.

Weydandt is totally relaxed about the hype, says Kuhn, who has “bet his front door” on his former protégé’s breakthrough. The front door can now stay where it is. Heldt confirmed that he had negotiated a professional contract with Weydandt’s father Heinrich.

Henne” was supposed to take over his tax office after his business studies. But since President Kind approved the treaty on Monday, this task has to wait. Under the new contract, Weydandt will receive a salary about ten times higher than before. Weydandt is “one to be treated to,” says team-mate Kevin Wimmer.

Everyone in the team is happy to have someone like the 23-year-old with them. This was recently confirmed by Niclas Füllkrug, who also pointed out that Weydandt, for his part, profited from “joining such a homogenous troupe”.

Weydandt also benefits from the trust that Breitenreiter places in him. “It was a clear signal that we would replace him today at 0:0,” he said on Saturday.

The joker role will be filled again by “Henne” against Dortmund on Friday evening, Füllkrug and Takuma Asano are seeded. This doesn’t change the 96 fans’ declarations of love anyway: “Henne, you are the best man! Fabulous!
