Hi Friends! I wanted to share some exciting news, we have decided to take advantage of the renewable energy rebates and upgrade our HVAC units (units as in three to be exact, for three zone heating/cooling). We are very excited to the first step at renovating/updating our beautiful mid-century home and making it more renewable energy friendly, don't worry we're not doing anything drastic like chopping off a wing and adding a 2 story great room with a coal stove! 😂😂 First step seven 100+ foot holes dug around the property for geothermal, today old unit head to the scrapper and new shiny unit gets fitted. Get Your Home’s AC Ready for the Season with AC Maintenance

Temperatures in the 80s will be here before you know it. But after a winter filled with high utility bills, most Maryland homeowners are going to wait as long as they can to turn the AC on. That’s totally understandable. But you want to make sure your AC is in good running condition before temperatures hit the 80s on a regular basis. You can do that with a few simple AC maintenance tips.

Handy homeowners can do some of these things themselves, but if that doesn’t describe you, call in a professional. OK, here goes:

AC Maintenance Tip #1: Clean Around the Exterior Unit

We’ll start off easy. Go outside and examine your outdoor unit. Pull or trim any weeds or bushes that are within 2 feet of the unit. Remove any leaves or debris as well. You want the unit to have good air flow. You can also hose off any dust or debris that collected on the unit or the coils over the winter.

AC Maintenance Tip #2: Change the Filter

A good rule of thumb is to check your filter monthly if you use a thinner HVAC filter, and every 3 months is you use the thicker type. But when switching from heat to air conditioning, check the filter to make sure it’s ready for the season.

AC Maintenance Tip #3: Turn on the AC

Even if you don’t plan on leaving your AC on for the duration of the spring and summer, it’s a good idea to test it out in the spring. Switch over to AC and set the temperature to 60. This should have the system kick in. Is it blowing hot air? Is it making funny noises? If the system is running smoothly, you’re good to go, although you may still want to consider Tip #4.

AC Maintenance Tip #4: Schedule a Professional Tune-up

An AC tune-up from HVAC professionals can help your system run at peak performance all summer long. A checkup like this helps catch any problems while they’re still small.

Tip #5: Get a Programmable Thermostat

This isn’t really an AC maintenance tip, but it’s a tip that will save you money on your cooling bills this spring and summer, as well as your heating bills next winter. If you have an old thermostat where you can only set one temperature for the whole day, or you have to physically move a dial or tab if you want to change the temperature before you go to bed, it’s time to replace it.

Some electric providers let you earn points towards getting a programmable thermostat for free, but there are also inexpensive models out there. By setting specific temperatures for the hours when you’re at home, when you’re away, and when you’re asleep, you can easily cut your energy costs year-round.

Whether you’re new to keeping your house warm with home heating oil, or you’ve been doing it for years, you have questions. With more than 50 years in the business of heating oil delivery, we have most of the answers. Today, we’re looking at some of the most common questions we get, and we offer straight answers.

What Is DULSD Heating Oil?

DULSD stands for dyed Ultra Low-Sulphur Diesel. This means the heating oil has less than 15 ppm sulphur content, resulting in a cleaner burn, and fewer emissions from your furnace or boiler. It also means the oil smell is nearly gone, and your heating equipment operates more efficiently.

Why Is My Home Heating Oil Red?

Heating oil is diesel fuel. Federal regulations require it to be died red so that it is clear that it is not legal to use in a diesel vehicle. This is mainly for tax reasons, as on-road diesel is taxed differently.

How Do I Know How Big My Oil Tank Is?

Most home heating oil tanks are 275-gallon tanks. They measure 27″ wide, 44″ high and 60″ long.

How Do I Know How Much Oil Is Left in My Tank?

Home heating oil tanks have a fuel gauge on top of the tank that will tell you if the tank is 3/4th full, ½ full, or ¼ full. With a typical 275-gallon tank, 3/4th full is about 204 gallons, while ½ full is about 136 gallons, and 1/4th full is 68 gallons.

When Should I Order More Home Heating Oil?

It’s recommended that you never let your tank get below 1/8th full during the heating season. This is because sludge can build up in the bottom of the tank, and you want to avoid that sludge getting into your heating system. To avoid this scenario, we recommend ordering when your tank is ¼ full.

Why Is There a Whistling Sound When My Tank Is Being Filled?

Don’t worry, it’s nothing bad. When heating oil is pumped into your tank, the oil displaces air and sends it out your vent alarm, making a whistling sound that the delivery driver can hear. When the whistling stops, the tank is almost full.

Why Are Home Heating Oil Prices So High?

It’s part of supply and demand. Typically, prices go up during the winter, and fall in the summer. For the winter of 2021-22, prices are also affected by pent-up demand.
