Not the oneshot I wanted to have finished in time for Valentine’s Day but it’s still fluff! Hopefully I’ll have something else ready soon but in the meantime Happy Valentine’s Day huntlosers 💚💛
———
“…and make sure you get the charm from Gus before you leave,” reminded Willow, finding another reason to prolong their embrace as she held Hunter tightly.
“I will,” he assured her, resting his chin atop her head as he tried not to hold her too tight. He didn’t want to separate, he wanted to stay in this moment forever. He had already said goodbyes to everyone else (it’s not forever, they had all said, we’ll be together soon) but this goodbye felt different. It felt… more.
The words held more, the silence held more. Because Willow had always been more. She was so much, she was composed of the elements and combination of senses and even the simplest things were complex when she was involved. When he came to say goodbye, she ran to him and buried her face in his chest. Any doubt, and fear he had instantly melted by the warmth of her presence. And he wanted to tell her all this. He wanted to tell her all the ways she made him feel, all the things she meant to him, all the knots in his stomach that made a maze where every path lead to her. She was scary and comforting and wonderful and inspiring and complicated and simple and exciting and so many things it was as though she was the challenge his vast vocals I had been preparing all these years for. And with everything he knew he had to do today, and with everything he was willing to he knew deep down he may not get another chance to let these feelings be known.
He could tell her now, there was no reason not to. There was every reason in favor of it actually. He could leave her with a poetic, romantic sentiment that would outlive him and echo in her mind as her existence echoed in his. But instead he said:
“Be safe, okay?”
“I will.” She promised as she stepped back to look up at him, and he could see tears forming in the corner of her eyes. He knew his eyes held a matching pool and as much as they both had agreed to not hold back their emotions, he did not want her last image of him to be covered in tears. “You too, okay?”
“Okay well, uh… bye!” Hunter said quickly before he had a chance to ruin the moment, disappearing in to his signature flash of gold.
Hunter appeared a good distance away, standing a moment to watch Willow from afar, brushing her tears from her eyes and cursing himself for not doing it for her. He turned to start walking forward, but as soon as he did. He found himself back where he had just been, now a few feet from Willow.
“What?” Hunter murmured to himself, assuming it was just a part of the adjustment period of having Flapjack’s magic be a part of him. He quickly teleported back to where he had gotten before but just as he lifted his foot to take a step forward, his foot came down back beside Willow.
“Ah, c’mon!” Hunter exclaimed in frustration, looking at his hands as though they somehow held the answer.
“Oh, Hunter I thought you left,” said Willow as she turned to see him back, confused but pleasantly surprised.
“I’m trying to, but he won’t let me!”
“Who, Gus?”
“No, him.” Hunter answered, placing his hand on his chest and Willow instantly understood.
“Oh, well why not?” she asked, walking closer to him. “Is something wrong? Is Flapjack trying to tell you something?”
“Maybe? But I don’t know-.” Willow placed her hand on his chest and when he looked at up her and saw the concern and curiosity in her eyes, he felt a familiar thump in his chest mix with another familiar thump as though they had teamed up to yell at him. “-what it could be.”
He wondered if she could feel the pounding as it called out to him, refusing to be ignored any longer.
“Hmm, maybe you forgot something,” Willow offered, looking back up to him with gentle smile. They were already so close and as she raised her her eyes up to his, he felt as though Flapjack was trying to tug him down even closer to her.
“I think... I did.” he said slowly, knowing Flapjack had been telling him to do this for awhile and Hunter knew he must be utterly delighted to have him at his mercy. The little rascal made it clear that he would not allow Hunter to leave unless he finally followed through on what he has been putting off for so long.
“Is everything... okay?” she asked, rendered equally as motionless as their closeness caught up with her. It was a different type of proximity than their embrace, it was uncertain what this was exactly. It felt like they were in a tiny bubble, a forcefield, a blip in time where everything was slower and brighter and it was just them. He placed his hand over hers on his chest as though he was sharing the beat of a song he was dedicating just to her.
“Willow, I...” he began nervously, trying to steady his breathing. “There’s something I need you to know...”
He took a deep breath as he tried to summon the words, but the sentiment remained unspoken. He looked at her looking at him with wide, anticipating eyes and suddenly felt like there weren’t enough words and and even less time. He wished the morse code of his makeshift heartbeat was easier to translate.
“I...” he breathed, his eyes darting down to her lips as she allowed him to stand closer, as though everything else around them was frozen. He placed his other hand under her chin and heard her sharply inhale at the bold gesture. “In case I don’t make it back…” He leaned down and instinctively closed his eyes, certain this would convey everything he felt better than any mere sentence. But before his lips could reach hers, she stepped aside and he fell to the ground face first.
“Are you serious?” Willow demanded angrily as Hunter turned around to face her, confused and slightly embarrassed. He had been in the zone and now the rug had been ripped out from under him.
“Yes?” He said, trying to place her tone. “Err, no? Yes? I’m just not... entirely sure what I’m supposed to say here...”
“I am not gonna have our first kiss be our last one!”
“But Willow, what if-.”
“‘What if’ nothing!” She said, stomping her foot. “I am not gonna let you kiss me goodbye if it means you might not come back! That’s not how it’s supposed to happen!”
Hunter’s eyes widened, staring in awe at her as she stood over him in total fury, one hand on her hip and the other wagging a finger at him in disapproval.
That’s not how it’s supposed to happen.
It was supposed to happen. She disapproved the cause, not the effect.
“So...” Hunter tapped his fingers on the ground as he sat up a little straighter as he cleared his throat as spoke carefully. “You... do wanna kiss me then?”
“Well, duh!” Exclaimed Willow as though it was as obvious as the wolf on his shirt. She moved to sit on the ground beside him, bumping their shoulders together, her tone stayed serious but her words were much lighter. “Of course I wanna kiss you. I like you, you dork.”
“‘Of course,’” Hunter repeated lightly, practically choking on the sentiment as he tried to regulate his breathing. “‘Of course,’ cool cool cool, right yeah okay. Of course, wow.”
“But I’m not gonna kiss you goodbye if it’s like a forever goodbye,” she continued sternly, brushing her finger over the bridge of his knuckle, as she looked down at the ground. “I don’t think Flapjack kept bringing you back here to say goodbye forever.”
“Well, I know that he definitely wants me to kiss you,” said Hunter with a light chuckle, holding his hand to his chest knowing the bird would be chirping loudly beside him. He tried not to lose his nerve as Willow giggled at the sentence. The light, airy sound eased him and Hunter sighed. “Sorry, ugh I guess I let Luz put the idea in my head that kissing you before battle would be romantic...”
“Well, that is a little bit true,” Willow admitted, leaning her head against his shoulder and looking up at him. “But what’s not romantic is you thinking that you have to be in danger for me to want to kiss you.”
“I mean I don’t think that exactly,” said Hunter, looking down at his feet. He tried not to dwell on the idea that there were other times that he could’ve kissed Willow and she would not have turned him down due to the circumstances. “I guess I just didn’t have the guts to try until... I realized I might’ve waited too long. I thought I’d have more time and be able to do it right but after all this... I didn’t wanna waste another second. I wanted you to know how I… how you…”
He looked up and caught Willow’s eye and the new brown they held reminded her of strong, noble tree. It was like the rings of a tree stump, hypnotic in a way as they pulled her in to count them. She reached up to cup the side of his face, brushing his lose strand of hair to the side as she placed a firm kiss on his cheek. He let out a squeak of surprise, her warm breath graced his cheek and the smell of daisies filled his nose as she lingered beside him.
“Wait uh ha w-w-what was that then I-.”
“That’s for luck,” she said softly. “And if you don’t come back then I’ll think my kisses aren’t lucky and I’ll have to live with that guilt forever. Is that what you want?”
“Of course not captain.” Hunter whispered, feeling like his voice may never reach another volume.
“Good.” She said proudly, placing another kiss on the tip his nose before rising to her feet. She proceeded to walk away backwards, keeping her eyes locked on his blushing face and melting at the way his hand covered the spot she had placed the kiss as though holding it in place. “Remember: it’s the first, not the last.” She added with a playful wink before she turned on her heel to start walking back to her group.
As Hunter continued to watch her in admiration, a small collection of yellow flowers grew around him, an obvious second goodbye from a similarly smitten plant witch. They were vibrant and sweet and strong, just like the girl who sent them. He rose to his feet to see them leading back to Willow, created by her footsteps as though making a path that dared him to follow her.
Before he fully understood what he was doing, he had teleported to be back in front of her, stopping her in her tracks. She raised an eyebrow as she prepared a sassy remark about how maybe it wasn’t Flapjack who kept bringing him back to her, but before she could say anything Hunter gently but swiftly placed his hand beneath her chin to tilt her head up to him as he leaned down to press a shy but certain kiss to her lips. It was quick brush, but it was enough to make her chest feel as though it was buzzing with a swarm of fire bees. As he pulled away, Willow emitted a small gasp as her words vanished from her mind, all thing vanished from her mind as she focused on the boy who moments ago was stunned and flustered now wore a playful smirk that sent a shiver down her spine. The tables had turn in the most delightful way.
“Just in case you need some luck,” he said, taking a page from her book and giving her a playful wink before disappearing quickly in a flash of gold. He thanked Flapjack for allowing him the cool and seamless exit.
It certainly was not the last.
