You were tired. You've always been tired. Ever since you were transported to Teyvat, everything has been bugging you like leeches. Not to mention that 2/4 of the Nations' problems weren't solved yet since Genshin Impact's update has only reached Sumeru, and not more.

You were required to attend every single nation's festivals, including ones that celebrates your birth, the day where you 'descended' to Teyvat, and more.

And.. Were the characters always this clingy? They've been attaching themselves to you like you're the light source for moths. You couldn't help but like the attention but at the same time get annoyed by it. Can't you at least have ONE second of privacy.

You wanted so badly to stay here, yet you also have a life back home you crave oh so badly. Your parents could be looking for you, and your friends even!

All your life, you've learned that in order to be liked. You have to have the image of a strong and reliable person. Just one crack of your negative emotions will lead your 'friends' away. You can't have that. You don't want to be alone. You never wanted to be alone. Yet, you still end up in the same situation over and over.

It's an endless cycle of people relying on you but when you need them the most, they turn their backs on you. Never to see you with a happy smile unless they need something.

Your facade still continues even in Teyvat. You were sure that they would leave you behind if you were to show just a tiny bit of negative emotion. That's why you only let them out alone. Or you just don't.

Years of suppressing your own emotions has made you feel numb on the inside. You can't help it. It was bound to happen. Even when you want to cry or be angry, about anything, just anything. You can't. It's like you don't even have control of your own emotions anymore.

All you want to do is just sleep.

“ Your Grace! There you are, would you like to come with me to Windrise? The breeze seems to be picking up lately! ” Venti invited, with a glee smile.

“ Oh! Venti! Well, about that.. ” You replied, before someone else interrupted you.

“ No, they won't come with you to Windrise. Because I already asked them first to do pranks with me! ” Hu Tao interfered.

“ Oh, right.. But..- ”

“ Oh? But I was sure that Their Divinity would have a tea ceremony with me. Isn't that right, Your Grace? ” Ayato joined in.

“ Seriously. Give Their Divinity some space. Well, why don't you come with me to the Dharma Forest to relax? I'm sure the sunlight would calm you. ” Tighnari stated.

Seriously! You were being thrown left and right by your own acolytes. Not understanding that all you want is just some alone time. You've been keeping your business to yourself, so why are they including you in their business?!

“ ENOUGH! ” You yelled, as the ground deflates to your rising anger, with a couple of birds flying away from the trees they were sitting on. With your acolytes thrown back due to the sheer force.

“ SERIOUSLY! I'VE BEEN INCLUDED TO EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOUR BUSINESSES, WHAT MORE COULD YOU POSSIBLY WANT?! I'VE BEEN WAITING AND WAITING FOR A LONG TIME TO FINALLY BE ALONE. BUT OF COURSE WITH YOU HERE, IT'D BE IMPOSSIBLE TO GET THAT!?! JUST KEEP YOUR BUSINESS TO YOURSELF, DAMMIT!! ”

Your voice echoed, along with your anger. Is this what it's like to feel the Divine One's anger? They feel a rising guilt inside, slowly burning them inside out. But what pains more, is that they never realized.

How could they do this to you?! How could they not realize what they've been doing to you?! You'd forgive them.. Right? Right?! What if you don't? What if you exile them from your existence? Thousands of ‘ what if's ’ continue to multiply in their heads.

Meanwhile, you just realized what you have said. Could they hate you now? Will they leave you? Will they replace your for another person? You couldn't help but break into tears as panic rises, torturing your brain like a thousand arrows.

“ I.. I'm.. I'm sorry! I - I'm not feeling well! ” With that, you disappear to thin air. With nothing left behind, not including the petals of gold leaves falling to the hard ground. Before disintegrating to nothing but dust that was blown by the wind.

They're gonna hate you now. Aren't they?

Days have passed after that breakdown, and the acolytes were searching all over for you. The Starsnatch Cliff, Mt. Aozang, The Grand Narukami Shrine, even Sumeru's Desert Temple! Where could you have been? Did you abandon them, perhaps? There's no way.

But those negative thoughts of you getting into the worst of the worst outcomes, were burnt to ash as one of the acolytes (Your favorite character) found you at the very same shrine where you 'descend' to Teyvat, sound asleep.

You were awoken to the soft, silky bed instead of the hard ground from your shrine. Back to your own Palace of Divinity. Of course, you didn't want to wake up just to see your acolytes. You were sure they'd be disappointed in you.

But before you could even go back to sleep, the doors flew open, revealing the four archons, with apologetic looks.

Silent, you decided not to look at them in the eye. Knowing damn well you don't have the strength to. You're just tired. You just want to get this over with. You know that they're gonna dispose of you. You're not strong. Nor reliable. They're gonna think of you as useless. You're just a pile of garbage in their eyes, right?

“ We're sorry, Your Grace. ”

... What?

“ We weren't thinking thoroughly of our actions. We didn't mean to bother you, we just wanted you to relax. Perhaps we thought wrong. And we apologize for that. ” Zhongli stated, as the three other Archons bowed to you.

“ ... ” Speechless, you don't know what to say. No one has ever said this to you. What do you do in these type of situations? You can't think of anything. Yet, your vision gets blurry as water drops fell from your eyes.

“ Oh- Oh my gosh!! Your Grace, we didn't mean to make you cry! We're very sorry! Please, forgive us! ” Ei apologized, worries starting to show on her eyes.

Hiccups were starting to form, and your teeth began to grit on itself to prevent any awkward noise coming out. Is this what it feels like? To finally let go and just be yourself? It feels too good to be true.

Without any words, Venti hugged you. No words, as he knew what it feels like to mask your feelings away. To bury your feelings six feet under so no one would worry about you. He knows exactly what it feels like. But what he didn't understand is.. Why?

Questions began to form in his mind, but none was answered. As his only focus is only to comfort you, the Creator.

“ It's okay now. Feel free to express that beautiful emotion of yours. ”

With that, wails of crying was heard coming from none other but you. Tears falling down to Venti's shoulder, wetting the green fabric. But he doesn't care. He's glad that you're finally yourself.

Nahida had always knew that you were hiding something, she just doesn't know what. Now that she knows, she couldn't help but pity you but be proud of you at the same time.

Ei had never knew of your facade. But she always feels that something is wrong whenever you put a smile at your face on unexpected situations, calmly confronting it with your advice. Have you had these situations before? How could you confront it so professionally? Now that she knew, she was glad. She could finally see your first, genuine smile around them.

Zhongli knew of your facade. He just doesn't confront you about it. He knew that the smile of yours was fake. He knew that the laughter of yours was fake. He knew that you don't feel comfortable showing your true emotions. All he could do is just stand by and watch. He doesn't want to force you to finally tell the truth. He wants to wait for the right time. For you to tell him about your facade. And now that it did happen, he's proud of you. Very proud.

All you could do now is just hug the Anemo Archon back as you cry to your heart's will. You're finally given the freedom you've always wanted, why not use it for the first time in your second life?

Worst of the year

Football - I'm no longer loving football since Sir Alex retired back in 2013, anything Manchester United and football. Thought they improving in season 2022-23, winning League Cup and finishing 3rd, then unable getting Harry Kane and season 2023-24 last straw. Also totall hate on football fans, sport teams I hate and Glazers. I don't what happen to Manchester United. Now everytime there football on telly or newspapers.

High Security before Big Ben Tour and other problem during London Holiday - Before Tour of Big Ben, security check were too much and shock, we ask why we were wearing vest coats my brother say pockets carry wallets and stuffs. Then when our stuffs put through computer scan, we been ask to be double us and be in a room, it was little scary, and upseting, double check our bags and our t-shirts, then we wait for the note we seem to be in the way of a security woman and shout at us but we were waiting for our notes and have to leave our vest coat. But all fine after that. But that moment will scare me but won't stop my good memories and love for Big Ben and London. That on Tuesday. On Sunday, when we arrived, it was freezing even in our special inner clothes that meant to keep us warmm but we were freezing then when check in there were alot of people checking in and it was self check in, there a stff that will help out I got little frusrated and knackered body and when hot to our room, we start going to Abba Arena but it seem far, so many people and packed up tude then arrived at Abba Arena, when in queue to security I stupiy put my stuffs in my pockets after taken them out then when got scan it beep and stupid turn around and secutiry stop, he didn't even say anthing then believe took my stuffs on the tray and instead of putiing it my pocket I carry it and looking for my brother to put my stuffs in his bag and I got angry and talk to my brother how p*** off I am. But fine after just confuse, knackered and stress and angry. Also time rush, there time ran out, places we meant to go but unable and my body knackered. Even had a good time, there be bad times come along. Not sure we be going together on holiday again. I do prefer on my own and feel my brother don't go anywhere with again on what happen on our London holiday.

really feeling the sad themes these couple days ngl so here's zhongli angst. wrote this in one go in like 20 minutes, enjoy! contains: liyue archon quest spoilers, death, lots of angst. word count: 1074 pairing: zhongli x gn!reader

zhongli is a man of many talents. he’s well versed in the history and culture of liyue, raises brilliant suggestions in his job as the consultant to wangsheng funeral parlour, and can always seem to clean up whatever mess hu tao makes with her unconventional marketing strategies.

but if there is one thing he cannot do, is to keep the person dearest to him by his side, forever.

you both knew the day would come, eventually, but neither expected it to be so soon. as an archon, zhongli is blessed, or rather cursed, with the gift of immortality. he has been around for thousands of years, witnessed the rise and fall of nations and gods alike, and watched the birth and death of countless people since time immemorial. he has gotten to know the people over the years, grieving the loss of some, but nothing comes close to the utter brokenness the day you leave him for a better world, one without pain, war, and suffering.

he was by your side when it happened. the doctor had prescribed you yet another dose of medication, trying to ease your symptoms in what you knew were your final days. zhongli, however, refused to accept the fact. he would browse the ancient tomes to find treatments no longer practiced by modern medicine, scale the tallest mountains and buy the most expensive herbs to make your cure. but nothing worked. you had long accepted that your time was limited, but your lover would not budge.

so when it finally dawned on him that he couldn’t deny it any further, he chose to almost permanently settle himself in the small wooden stool by your bed, hand never leaving yours. you had never seen the well-poised man this deflated, not even when he willingly gave up his gnosis and stepped down as the ruling archon of the land of contracts.

you try to ease his pain, cracking a few jokes here and there when you can muster enough energy to speak. countless times you tell him, it’s time for him to move on, to find someone better, someone to heal his soul. but he wouldn’t listen. all he ever wanted was you. after guizhong, he was not sure if his physical body can endure the heartbreak of losing yet another lover to the merciless hands of time.

you left peacefully. the medication did its best to temporarily numb the pain in your final moments. with your hand firmly in his and a faint smile on your lips that is now etched permanently in his memory, you leave him, but not before whispering a final ‘i love you’ to the man you have devoted your mind, body, and soul to.

it wasn’t like you wanted to shatter him. you knew how much this would break him, and you had made every arrangement possible to make sure he surrounded himself with people that can support him, people who can offer a shoulder to lean on. but nothing prepared him for the raw, gut-wrenching pain the moment he finally peels his eyes away from your body to meet the doctor’s, his solemn nod confirming all of his worst fears.

he doesn’t know how long he stays there for, repeatedly running his thumb across your skin and pressing soft kisses to your knuckles, now growing increasingly cold and frigid, and muttering i love you’s in hopes that they’d somehow make their way across life and death to your ears. he knows you’re smiling, running free in an endless field and basking under the warm sunshine, free from the pain and disease that’s bound you for so long.

but he can’t find it in himself to let go.

it takes the doctor and several more people to finally pry your cold hand away from his. the moment he stands from the stool, knees wobbly and weak, a silence even greater than the one before falls over the room. the doctor lowers his arm, outstretched to pull the covers up over your features. zhongli runs his hand down the curves of your face one last time, trying to engrave every last detail into his mind.

the mind that never forgets never heals.

perhaps that’s the curse of being an immortal archon. he remembers the name of every person he’s met, every story he’s told, yet this is one story he cannot ever let himself finish.

he shuts his eyes in pain and looks away as the doctor covers your face, the fabric of the sheet a jarring white that screams death and heartbreak. when he looks up into the small group of people in the room, it’s almost as if a silent command has been placed upon them, and one by one they lower their heads. hu tao takes off her hat, and the village elder bows, leaning onto his cane for support.

zhongli passes them by, feeling their grief along with his. he is glad to have people around him, to not have to do this by himself, but for now he needs time. he needs to be alone with his thoughts, to finally come to terms that he won’t see your face, hear your laugh, or kiss your skin ever again in this lifetime.

the streets of liyue feels quieter, and the people all remove their hats and lower their heads as he passes, too numb to acknowledge any of them. the sensation of not returning formalities feels foreign to him like a bitter taste on his tongue. but he cannot fathom to reciprocate the traditional greetings when he feels as if his heart has been ripped out of his chest.

he barely remembers how he got to the piers of liyue harbour. the waves crash gently onto the wooden decks, sending droplets of salty water into the air. he sits by the ocean, listening to the rhythmic sounds of the surfs against shore.

even as an archon, there is still much he doesn’t know about the secrets of teyvat. but if there is a life after this, if his time on this continent comes to an end someday, he knows he will find you again. you’d be waiting for him, and no matter who he comes to be or where, he knows in the next lifetime and the millions after that, he will always choose you, and only you for the rest of eternity.

perhaps that is the contract he’s born to fulfill.

there's always the feeling of a presence, not necessarily warm but it brings a certain comfort. settling your nerves in a sense of safety. you can tell it's xiao alone from the fact that you've encountered abandoned and wrecked hilichurl camps and deactivated ruin hunters on your path. ever the almighty yaksha, making sure that you don't run into danger in one of your travels.

as much as he appreciates your voice rambling about a thing that excited you, he enjoys and treasures the times where you lay your head on his stiff shoulder, yawning. he would scoff about you for 'letting your guard to easily' however the action of shifting you to make it more comfortable far contrasts his actions.

he's a creative individual, viewing you as the main muse of his poems and songs. the flattery you would feel whenever he would sing a little song all about you is huge! how can you tell though? it isn't all that easy with him sighing blissfully while stealing glances at you from afar and then winking when he gets caught. diluc sometimes has to refrain himself from leaving the tavern from how much cheesy venti's words can go to.

takes you out every other night for a ride with his little dragon friend, dvalin. you don't question why he's been acquainted and familiar with the being that once tried to crush the city, you just couldn't when the complete feeling of freedom rushes through your body when the wind whips around while venti embraces you from behind, calm, despite the high distance from the ground.

despite thinking that the blanket of stars aren't real, he spends a deal of time stargazing and even pointing out constellations late in the night. he'd play along with little delusions if it meant spending another moment with you and being the special one, the only one to see your smiles and laughs. the gaze he looks at you with is impeccably soft, and when you try to mention it the next day all you'll get is a string of denial flowing out of his mouth.

admits that sometimes wearing his hat is quite tiring, it's kinda heavy so he settles with placing it over your head telling you to 'carry it because he doesn't want to' uh-uh he totally doesn't think that you look cute in it. he'd throw himself in a hole before he'll let his fellow harbingers, tartaglia to see him and you in this moment. although being interrupted with his precious time with you annoys him to no end.

whenever he misses you, a letter with careful handwriting inside somehow makes it's way on your window. He would do it himself if he could but he's always in an array of jobs by the captain meanwhile there also lies the vision hunt decree, so he can temporarily only use a little bird to deliver his messages to you. on some occasions, a small doodle might lay on the corners. an example being a messily drawn picture of himself holding a flower while you stand infront of him. seems like it was a drawing of him giving you flowers.

in those times where the crux fleet comes over ritou to take the materials needed for transport like yoimiya's fireworks for an upcoming festival, beidou makes sure to stall longer to 'chat' so that the samurai can reunite with his lover after days and weeks of longing, you'd be surprised after being suddenly pulled into your home before even opening the door only to be met with twinkling ruby eyes.

can't stay serious for shit whenever when you enter a room he's in, in short he has a short attention span when you're around. he could be talking with ayaka about serious matters but then once he catches your presence his eyes are already clipped on your figure, they ain't moving until you actually leave. ayaka can only sigh in disappointment and amusement at the way he perks up at the sight of your face and visibly brightens, aaandd there he goes. smiling at particularly nothing with a giddy smile.

once choked one a piece of onigiri and happened every time you both went out for a little date, he does this to hear your giggles and smile. though he loves the part where you frantically look for a glass of water and dott on him, you always end up deadpanning when he claims that he needs kisses and cuddles to be 'cured'. and dramatically falls to the ground playing dead when you decline.

The reader is not a Archon tho and travels all over Teyvat cuz small bits of destruction were ever they go. To be honest, he didn't notice your presence at first. He had other concerns on his mind that day to perceive the chaotic (and slightly threatening) aura that Mondstadt was infected with that day.

Barbatos is a person of habit, so he couldn't help but be curious when the crowd in front of him began to look a little agitated instead of seeming to enjoy his lyre and his songs.

But then a series of domino events appeared in front of his very eyes.

The purity of the chaos was such that he felt overwhelmed, even without the white-haired boy around, if it wasn’t Bennett fault, then how was it possible for everything to be ruined in such a short time?

His patience ended when, out of nowhere, the strings of his lyre jumped close to his face as they snapped. Making that awful noise that couldn’t mean nothing good.

Okay, enough, who is messing around in here? No more joking in his nation!

He concentrated a little, a faint but unique presence kept his nerves on edge, as if he was being watched from afar. He moved away from the busy areas and then chased that ephemeral energy to the highest point of the church, where the bells were ringing in an irregular and stressful way.

Then he found you. Snoozing against one of the columns, somewhat tired because the trip you made to reach Mondstadt.

Surprisingly, Barbatos understood you since the first exchange of words. A god of chaos who was also a free spirit, you followed no rules ever written in Teyvat, and you had no plans to apologize for the mess you made.

Both of you were Zhongli’s worst nightmare, but that’s another story.

He managed to through your arrogance and your teasing nature that you, in fact, were a lonely spirit that liked to witness the life from above of everyone.

The difference between teasing someone accidentally and committing a crime was really visible, but he still couldn't help but feel like he should scold you after your mere presence messed up with the guild's baskets full of fish.

“… I don’t know what do you mean.” Once discovered you had no choice but to remain defensive, pretending to be disinterested.

“Heh, you aren’t a good liar.” It may not be the wisest thing to make fun of someone who could destroy the place where you were resting, but Venti was confident that he knew you well enough to know that you were not so explosive. “You know!, I just have some pieces, but I think it’s because they are little walking concentrations of pure and innocent chaos, am I wrong?”

He wasn’t, no at all. But you would never confess something that embarrassing.

This guy wrote a ballad about the days when Mondstadt got immerse with that strike of bad luck. Kind of an apology of not being able to handle the situation.

Now there’s the rumor that says that, every time somebody sings that song, something unlucky will happen in front of you.

One night when the moon was shining on the Cider Lake his well tuned ears distinguished a melody that was broken from time to time by the accidents of his performer, distracting him of his way to look for you.

It could be painful to listen to, but Venti could certainly feel the dedication of the one who was playing the imperfect song.

The ballad of the god of chaos, hummed like a lullaby that instead of making you sleep makes you question the events of the day. Wishing for the slightest thing to be different after an exhaustive week of peace and tranquility.

A lonely spirits cursing their existence, sitting in the highest point of a stranger’s palace, where you can reach the sky by only rising your hand.

The next day, Barbatos invited you to drink some wine, this time near Windrise to avoid accidents in the city.

As he almost dropped the bottle when a lot of slimes were attracted by your presence, he confirmed the theory about that the way to spend time with you would not be his personal definition of hanging out.

Okay, there’s only two scenarios that could happened when you set a foot in Liyue.

Old man has a soft spot for you for being a relative young deity.

Or he’s always lecturing you for not having control of your aura and powers.

How u dare bringing chaos to the nation of order? It’s that a death wish?

Jokes aside, you’re not really a threat. And he could sense that after he saw how you tried to avoid having direct contact with the city. Rex Lapis found your silhouette jumping and crossing through the mountains until reaching the fairest point that allowed you to enjoy the view of the streets that were filled with life and light as the sunsets.

He even noticed how you sighed in frustration when a storm started out of nowhere. A rain dedicated just for the arriving of the God of Chaos. Not even bothering of getting shield, you stayed in your place to look at all the people who were getting back to their places.

The rain seemed to stop over your head, for a second was enough to stop you from being cruelly swamped by the very weather you had created. An elegant umbrella covered you, the long awaited surprise you expected from someone as outdated as Morax.

You looked up, and found his expression calm and attentive, watching you. As if he had made a great discovery that he could not believe

“May I have a moment of your time to keep you company? Letting out your sorrows in the middle of a torrential storm is not what I would recommend as way to spend a good day.”

“… What are you talking about? Get in your own business, old man.”

“Well, you should know that a sorrow shared is a sorrow halved.”

Next time you knew was that he was helping you to dry your hair with a towel once you let him guide you to his place.

Zhongli picked you up like a abandoned cat that day. Even if having you near meant to deal with new the roof leaks.

Also kept you away from Hu Tao, if you two ever get along for being partners in crime he would seal himself underground-

Another one who believed fervently that your mood was to blame for the constant chaos you caused. He also tried to show you the wonders of peace and calm, teaching you how to prepare tea while listening to the storyteller (also both being a little far away from the rest of them, just in case).

He couldn’t help but sigh when the teapot arm broke as soon as you tried to serve the tea. What a waste, he thought.

You apologized to him, kind of stressed with yourself after you took all the pieces with your bare hands to run away with them. Leaving a confused Zhongli behind.

Next day you were back, with the teapot repaired and just like new.

He let out a lot of thankful words, some flattering and a lot more cheesy things that you never had received before.

With that unexpected affection you couldn’t help but react flustered; then a cat that was chasing a bird jumped through a lot of decorations and merchandise, almost starting a fire as the chained events kept going.

Yeah,, uh, Zhongli got some useful mental notes about you and your chaos that day.

Hey, before you go, want to make a contract? You won’t regret it!

But as the wandering spirit you were you had no problems in reject his offer, but also promising that you would visit Liyue if he wanted you to.

Lifting your hand at his direction, summoning chaos, this time, on purpose. The wind gained a wrathful nature and the biggest roots that were hiding under his feet rose to caught him.

And when you were about to hit each other Zhongli’s shield appeared just in time to separate both of you. Preventing a real catastrophic event.

Now stop fighting and introduce to each other.

What if you tried to awake Azhdaha to bring chaos and destruction to Liyue? What if you wanted to summoned Osial? What if… ?

Zhongli had to confirm and promise to him that those cruel possibilities won’t be a near future for respecting the real reason of your travel.

No matter if he wasn’t comfortable with your presence, it wasn’t his decision to allow you to roam freely, so he had to get use to it.

And in the hypothetical case of you being freed when she trapped the traveler (kicking you out) and then having a chance to see her again after the end of the war, then things would be somewhat different.

There’s not that much of civilization on some islands, so she allowed you to explore as much as your heart wanted. But if something serious happen, she promised that would end her work in the middle of the sea so your remains never be found.

Even if she wanted to spend some time with you and telling you some stories about Inazuma and other gods she couldn’t found the right time to call you at her presence.

As the current ruler of Inazuma she was busier than the rest of Archons you have meet. Maybe just some letters now and then like a way to keep a logbook, but not really a face to face talk.

Until she got the opportunity of a day off, just to found you messing around near some ruins. Trying to solve a puzzle before your speciality strikes in. The structure fell down after your fingertips reached the stone.

When the dust dissipated, you discovered her figure judging you from the other side of the remain ruins.

“I’ll allow it.” She said.

Her only condition was for you not to approach the huge boxes of fireworks down the street.

Venti is dedicated to freedom and gave his followers the space to thrive.

Jean is dedicated to Mondstadt, the people, and her position as the Acting Grand Master.

Sucrose is dedicated to bio-alchemy and making her own wonderland.

Xiao is dedicated to Morax and protecting the Nation of Liyue.

Geo - Knowledge

Zhongli is knowledgable of everything that happened to, in, or near Liyue and many other things.

Ningguang is knowledgable of anything within the Liyue's law system and business economy.

Albedo is knowledgable in alchemy and the deeper meaning behind it.

Noelle is knowledgable of everyone's preferences and how to execute (as in presentation) them perfectly.

Cryo - Supressed/Disregarded Emotions

Kaeya lies about being lonely and bothers Diluc every chance he gets just for some kind of interaction.

Rosaria and Diona both have daddy issues they choose not to fully acknowledge.

Qiqi is dead, forgets things constantly, and doesn't have much emotion to begin with since she's a zombie.

Chongyun can't express too much or his yang energy puts him in an inebriated state.

Eula is ostracized by both the people of mond and her family, therefore her only source of support are the Knights or a few Mondstadters.

As a hybrid, Ganyu doesn't feel right among adepti or mortals but chooses not to tell anyone (other than the traveller) about it.

Hydro - Determination/Loyalty (unsure of which)

Childe is loyal to the Tsaritsa yet is also determine to get a good fight out of anyone or anything.

Xingqiu is loyal to the chivalry code and determined to follow it through.

Barbara is loyal to the Church of Favonius and determined to be a beacon of hope that the people of Mond can look up to.

Mona is loyal to her morals (not using Astrology as a means to make money) and determined to the study of Astrology.

Pyro - Passion

Bennett is passionate in being an adventurer and not letting his bad luck hinder him.

Yanfei is passionate about the law and follwing it to the T.

Diluc was passionate about rising the ranks of the Knights of Favonius and making his father proud. He is now more passionate about protecting Mond.

Amber is passionate in becoming a great Outrider like her Grandpa before her.

Xinyan is passionate about rock music and spreading it to the far corners of Teyvat.

Xiangling is passionate about cooking and not being limited to everyday ingredients.

Klee is passionate about explosions. Everything goes boom.

Hu Tao is passionate about her job despite people thinking she's odd for being so happy about working as a Funeral Director.

A Day With The Genshin Characters: Liyue Edition

Today's going to be a busy day! Check your planner for who you'll be meeting with- as one of the esteemed members of the Liyue Qixing, you cannot afford to be late to any appointment. 

• 6:00, Ningguang: Morning Tea 

Although you say you love your job, waking up at un-archonly hours has to be the part you like the least. Even getting up at five in the morning, the hour when tigers prowl, is still not enough time to prepare for a meeting with the Tianquan. You rush around frantically choosing the best outfit, fragrance, and hair arrangement to present yourself to Lady Ningguang, and you're halfway out the door when it hits you- you forgot to bring a gift with you!

"Right on time," Ningguang says, pleased. You smile, hoping she won't hear your heart beating from anxiety. "And what a lovely present, too... is there any doubt you were appointed as one of the seven Qixing?" (You can't tell if it's her rare praise, or the sheer altitude you're at within the Jade Chamber, that's making your head spin).

• 7:00, Keqing: Business Meeting 

You barely have time to rest before Keqing whisks you away to Yuehai Pavilion. You're very close friends, and you admire the girl for her tenacity and diligence. The conversation flows easily as you walk to your destination under a cloudless sky. It's a wonderfully sunny moment, but the moment the doors lock, you mean business. In the next two hours, you conquer matters that would normally take days to resolve, and the two of you exchange grins. 

"There we go!" Keqing breathes a sigh of relief, pushing away the last stack of papers. She holds up her hand, and you high-five. "You know, I like how easily you keep up with me. You even caught mistakes I would have missed... things like this make me even more certain Liyue is better off in human hands."

• 9:00: Check In With Ganyu

With such a hectic schedule, Ganyu is your saving grace. It's always important to check in with her, just to make sure nothing you have planned catches you by surprise, and sometimes you wonder why others rarely do the same. She's quite lonely, and often mentions how nice it is that you speak with her every day and bring her gifts to help with work. It may be part of your job to be courteous, but... it does help her feel less lonely and conflicted with herself. 

"Qingxin flowers? Thank you so much." She accepts them gratefully, smiling at you with warm eyes. "I still have that new stationery you gave me, too. You're so kind for remembering the things I like!"

• 9:30: Talk to Beidou

The tea in the Jade Chamber was just a front for Ningguang to spring a request on you- meet with the captain of the Crux Fleet to discuss her... recent smuggling habits. But Beidou merely laughs heartily when you arrive. A crewmate tosses her a sack of Mora, and she slits it open, letting the payment shower over you in a spray of gold. And then, before you know what's happening, you're roped into helping them find a treasure rumored to be lost beneath the waves. 

"So, Ningguang though sending her star diplomat would get me to let up, huh!" You blush, wondering how you could be so easy to read under her ruby eye. "I was impressed by your words, and how well you fought by my side. But the annoyance of the Liyue Qixing is of no concern to me."

• 12:00, Tartaglia: TEACH HIM A LESSON!

As the member of the Qixing that oversees diplomacy and foreign relations, it's you that must meet with the Fatui Harbinger. He's quite good at playing pretend- all your underlings believed he was a naive, careless young man, and easily manipulated, too. And all of them ended up suppressing the urge to break something after they were done conversing with him. On your honor as one of Liyue's seven stars, you vow to not make their mistakes. 

"You're asking why I don't try to drive you mad?" he said, setting down his fork. You'd caved in and given him one after watching him struggle with chopsticks for far too long. "You're the only one who isn't a bore to talk to, that's all-" so this was on purpose?!- "and besides, I want to challenge you to a fight afterwards! Your vision's getting quite dusty from neglect, comrade. Let's fix that!"

• 2:00, Yanfei: Discussion of Legal Matters

Yanfei's counsel is an invaluable treasure. Especially when dealing with an opponent as vicious as Snezhnaya's Fatui, who deserve to have her wrath unleashed upon them. You walk to her office with a gleam in your eyes, and are delighted to see an equal fire already blazing in hers. For the next few hours, you two take the "suggestions" Tartaglia passed on from the Northland Bank and scheme on how to best tear them to shreds with the law.

"That man-childe's been giving you trouble again, huh," she giggles. "What did he come up with this time~? I've been waiting for an excuse to bring out the latest edition of my lawbook!" And with that, Yanfei slams it down, and the sheer weight of it nearly cracks her desk. "He won't know what hit him!"

• 4:00: Free Time

Of course, "free time" simply means that you have no meetings scheduled for this hour, which lets you adequately prepare for the next day's events. Tomorrow is your appointment with the Feiyun Commerce Guild, which you already know will require great patience and strength of mind. Because the head of the guild, and his eldest son, the future head, are- to put it mildly- not very bright... it's fortunate, then, that the second son Xingqiu has a good head on his shoulders.  

"Tomorrow, you should go straight to me instead," Xingqiu informs you cheerily, handing you a popsicle. Apparently, he keeps them around for his friend Chongyun, who's off to complete another exorcism. "I'll be sure to set everything in order." His eyes gleam. "And then, I can tell you the latest developments in 'A Legend of Sword'!"

• 5:00: Catch Xinyan's Concert!

Liyue's one and only rock musician isn't hard to find, thanks to the designated performance spots scattered around the city. You stop by at the raised platform where she's rocking out, where other people are listening as well. Xinyan strikes a peace sign in the air, and her vision glows with energy before the stage erupts with pillars of fire; her audience bursts into cheers and applause, and she's beaming as she leaps down to meet you. 

"Wait, seriously? You really changed up the rules a lil' so it'll be easier for me to hold concerts here?" Her eyes shine as they scan the papers- one of the many results of your work today in Yuehai. "Thank you so much! Wait-" she picks up her guitar again, giving it an experimental riff. "Let me think up a quick song for ya as thanks- I insist!"

• 6:00: Wangsheng Funeral Parlor 

Lately, you've been sent particularly determined requests from the other nations about allowing tourists to observe the ancient funeral rites. You already know the answer's gonna be a hard no, but the laws written by Rex Lapis state that you must check with the director anyway. She's not there when you arrive, so a consultant, Zhongli, brings you tea while you wait for her. You sit together in the fading sun, waiting for Hu Tao's familiar song to rise above the hill. 

Zhongli takes a quiet sip from his cup, closing his luminous eyes. "Although it was Rex Lapis who created the laws, they are not meant to be set in stone. Humans must revise the contract as they see fit, so that it will not erode with the passage of time." Something makes you feel as though it's more significant to him than you know. Then, he smiles slightly. "But, just looking at the people leading the way in his absence, like you... there's no need for me to worry."

• 8:00: Dinner; Request Chef Xiangling

The Wanmin Restaurant, run by Chef Mao and his daughter, is a breath of fresh air. While the rest of Liyue is divided between the "Li" and "Yue" styles of cooking, Xiangling pays the conflict no mind. Instead, she's not afraid to be daring and experiment, blazing ahead without worrying about what others think. You can see some similarities between her and Keqing, but it's best not to mention it after that disastrous banquet they organized together... 

"Had a rough day, didn't you?" Xiangling asks, her golden eyes twinkling as she hands you the steaming hot bowl. "Well, for you, I made sure to prepare your favorite dish! I hope you don't mind if I added a lizard or two this time- I'm kidding!" she adds quickly, upon seeing alarm flash across your face. 

• 9:00: Return Home

After everything that happened, you're eager to collect the reports from your subordinates and head home to draft new revisions for Tianquan Ningguang to look over (and then, hopefully, get some rest). But as you're walking on the path to your neighborhood, you spot a little girl sitting in the grass, clutching her head. Alarm rises in your chest as you rush over to see what's wrong, and why she's alone- only to realize with a start that she's the child that returned from the dead.  

"Thank you for taking Qiqi back to Bubu Pharmacy," she says, reading solemnly from her notebook (where the entire thank-you script is written). Even when you set her down, she's still reading the pieces of paper. "Will you tell Dr. Baizhu where I got lost? Please and thank you, again."

• 10:00: Sleep

In the end, you never did get to those revisions. You can hear your fellow Qixing scolding you in your head, but at least you got plenty of other things done; the well-oiled machine that is Liyue will still keep running on thanks to the tasks you accomplished today. Someday, even the adepti will have to acknowledge the ability of humans... you turn in your bed to feel the coolness of the other side. Speaking of adepti... the night air coming in... reminds you of... "Xiao..."

"I thought you were in danger," the adeptus huffs. The moment you said his name, you'd finally fallen asleep, but it still brought Xiao to you- balanced on the windowsill, hair waving in the breeze. "Still... I'm... glad that you're alright," he admits, glancing at you to make sure you're not awake to hear. "Rest well, bright star of Liyue." And then, with a sound like a sigh- or was it the wind?- he's gone.

Genshin Impact Idol AU ideas

So we all know the groups Veechu made with 4nemo, DCKZ, L/yue and, TVT DREAM however, I thought it was a crime the actual idol Barbara wasn’t in a group so, I made my own! I do not have the skills to draw this so, I will be including concept photos by actual groups(older and newer as well as the time in those examples i think suits them just for an example bts run era - dope era for a boy group) for the general vibe. Click on their names for a link to the kpop wiki about them. I also won’t include Lumine because many fans have made their own headcanons for that I like.

Feel free to use the ideas I added to this in fanworks just please credit me for the idea of the groups I made myself if you do. All will be under the read more so mobile users don’t break their fingers trying to scroll past. Wiki links are included for each real world inspiration. If looking for a specific character use ctrl+f on PC to search for them to make your life easier.

Note: their stories can be changed if you would like to make it different for your art/writing/whatever. I just think a bit of drama makes them feel more real. None of the stories are 100% based on any real group even their inspirations aren’t direct copies. As new characters are released/shown in stories I will be adding onto existing groups I made up or, making new ones so if you like my ideas save this and come back to it.

A rookie girl group created from the top seven trainees(voted by judges & public vote) in a survival show that quickly gained international fame from their debut single and, performance. No one doubts their talents however, some question how legitimate the voting/ranking was in the show.  No one blames the girls themselves for this and, there is no real evidence to prove this. All of the members believe the show to be real due to their own experiences too although, a few of them due to their low self-esteem believe other trainees would’ve been better suited in the group even if they are thankful for the support. It will take a while for all of them to adjust and, have it all feel real. Will they rise to super stardom or, crack under the immense pressure?

A junior girl group for kids/tweens made(and managed) by Alice to promote her daughter Klee and, have her gain experience for her dream of being a real idol. Although they perform, act, model and, release music similar older groups they still are children so, their concepts are always wholesome feel-good things to appeal to kid’s even younger their age or, younger. They also don’t have the same restrictions or, work hours due to their age. This group is very popular with Elementary schoolers and, sometimes even their families but, can be annoying to anyone older due to how cheesy it all is.

(Note: I don’t personally agree with kids being idols irl especially some I’ve seen that look like older teen/adult idols it’s scary. However, since it is a thing that exists and, this is a fictional head canon let’s pretend this is a world where none of them get hurt and can live pretty normal lives during & after their time as idols if they choose to do so. I just didn’t want to leave a playable character/important story character out of the AU entirely. Also, Sayu would be here but since she’s not officially released yet and, we don’t know any story about her I think it’s best for her to join later.)

A girl group that has stayed at the top for the past 7 years known for their elegant concepts although, they have had other concepts in the past(sexy, cute, etc.). Not only is Dandelion super famous but, each member has their own solo careers just as successful. Outside of the group Jean is known for her solo albums and, charity work. Lisa is known for her modelling career and, secretly is a successful author under a pen name. Eula is known for her many wins on dancing contest shows and, the many important roles she plays in dramas. Since this year marks the dreaded 7 year curse fans worry they might disband or, go on a permanent hiatus. Before this year they seemed inseparable to fans but, something happened during their last tour. Jean and, Lisa who were known to be best friends suddenly won’t even sit next to each other. Eula who was usually more reserved during interviews is having to do most of the work since they’re just awkwardly sitting on the opposite sides of her. Eula has never been the best at public speaking and, her blunt responses are causing antis to go on huge smear campaigns on social media. Jean who previously wanted to renew her contract is thinking about starting her own company. Lisa who previously wanted to renew her contract now wants to leave and, join a modelling agency. Eula still wants to renew her contract but, she doesn’t want to be solo yet. She is trying her hardest to get the group back together but, her harsh personality is only making the problem worse she feels. Will they stay together or, will they split? And if they stay together, will it be the same Dandelion fans fell in love with or, are some bridges burned forever?

From a wealthy Inazuman family Kamisato Ayaka (known as Ayaka) shocked the entire nation when she decided to stop pursuing traditional dance(which she had earned many honors and, was famous for since she was a small child) and, instead go overseas to become an idol. Due to her connections it wasn’t long after becoming a trainee that she was put on the same survival show that formed 7evelUp!. However, her good luck ran out when after filming she got into an accident in her company’s car on the way to her company’s trainee dorms. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured but, she sustained an injury to her ankle that made her unable to perform for the rest of the show and, therefore was disqualified. She was a fan favorite and, everyone was heartbroken that she couldn’t compete. Due to her popularity, her company decided that if she could prove she was able to work after being healed they would let her have a solo debut. She far surpassed their expectations being even better than she was before, resulting in her debuting the same time 7evelUp! did. She doesn’t have any negative feelings towards those girls but, she views them as her rivals. She is quickly gaining popularity for her insane talent in singing, dancing, acting, modelling and, song-writing. She is known to the media as “The Idol Princess” for her family’s wealth, her talent and, her graceful demeanor. Don’t put her into a box though, she can pull off any concept with ease. The question is though, will her company allow her the freedom to express herself to the fullest?

     The Director of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor conducts her affairs with utmost solemnity.

     Of course, you wouldn’t know it by the looks of her as she bounds around Liyue Harbor in the dead of night. The Director is a person known best for her eccentricities and rather unorthodox methodology when it comes to addressing potential business clientele, yet none have ever been able to successfully dispute her effectiveness in regards to her responsibilities to the dearly departed.

     The solemnity present in the Director’s affairs stretches far past what most have ever seen in person; the seasoned undertakers staffed under Hu Tao will tell anyone that much of her odd behavior is abandoned at the threshold of her personal office, in which various preparations are organized and meticulously planned by the Director themself. After all, their service to the dead did not start and end at the reading of their funeral rites.

     Hu Tao sits uncharacteristically quiet behind the large oak desk, weathered by the slow passage of time and burdened by a plethora of paper stacks which nearly dwarfed the young woman who sat between them.

     The sound of a pen diligently scratching against the surface of a page stops short as the Director hears Kaeya’s comment from across the room, drawing her eyes away from the notations she had been making about what materials would be necessary for this particular ceremony. They had been invited in, of course, in an attempt to seem hospitable as she finished the last of her work for the day before engaging in discussion with him, as a representative of Mondstadt. Loyal as she was to her home and the funeral parlor, Hu Tao would never turn down a good opportunity for a business partnership with those who sought out her services, neighboring nations enthusiastically included. Archons know she would be quite mad to even consider dismissing such a chance, rare as they were.

     No matter the nation, those who pass on should be honored with the appropriate ceremonies and customs they wish to be honored with, and the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor would deliver on such a promise.

     The small pyro entity which followed along with Hu Tao apparates beside her unoccupied left hand, prompting her to shift and press her fingertips softly into the top of its form with a breathy chuckle. Her eyes focus in on Kaeya across the room, already comfortably sat on the old couch with a book he’d seemingly plucked from a nearby shelf. Handwritten notes belonging to a previous Director of the parlor.

          ‘ There are more ways than even you could imagine, I believe, ‘ They respond, shifting her index and ring fingers intermittently atop the pyro specter’s form. A small, withered-sounding groan escapes from the entity’s mouth and persists for a number of seconds before Hu Tao relents and pulls away from it with a pleasant giggle. ‘ You and I are in quite different sorts of business, connected as they may be. As a Knight of Favonious, I’d be willing to guess your ideas of opening a carcass fall into a more ... literal sense? ‘

     She doesn’t wait for an answer before rising from her plush office chair, abandoning her pen and planning in favor of making her way across the office floor, straying over to the book case Kaeya had paid a visit to moments before. Rising up on tip-toe, Hu Tao retrieves a similar looking volume from the shelf; a terribly weathered face for a cover, the spine creaking loudly in protest as it falls open in Hu Tao’s careful palms. Without looking up from the text, they continue. ‘ I’d venture to say you and I are elbow deep in carcasses as we speak. Ones belonging to past Directors of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor, to be exact. ‘

     After a moment of skimming through the notations scrawled across the yellowed pages, she snaps the book closed in her hand, attention shifting back towards the Knight. ‘ If you really think about it, the thoughts one immortalizes with paper and ink become a carcass of their own kind after death. Human remains all their own. Another way for someone to linger in this life long after they’ve made the journey to the other side. And the abandoned carrion of a carcass will inevitably fall prey to vultures who find themselves lucky enough to find a meal. ‘

     Hu Tao crosses the room again until she’s come face to face with Kaeya, an unfaltering grin on her face as she reaches forward and takes the book from Kaeya’s hand, snapping it shut in similar fashion. The sharp sound echoes through the room as Hu Tao allows her pause to persist. Their brow quirks upwards, challenging. ‘ Something tells me the part of you that isn’t strictly a Knight already knew all about that, though. ‘

So just how are people rated? Individuals on Sesame Credit are measured by a score ranging between 350 and 950 points. Alibaba does not divulge the "complex algorithm" it uses to calculate the number but they do reveal the five factors taken into account. The first is credit history. For example, does the citizen pay their electricity or phone bill on time? Next is fulfilment capacity, which it defines in its guidelines as "a user's ability to fulfil his/her contract obligations". The third factor is personal characteristics, verifying personal information such as someone's mobile phone number and address. But the fourth category, behaviour and preference, is where it gets interesting.

Under this system, something as innocuous as a person's shopping habits become a measure of character. Alibaba admits it judges people by the types of products they buy. "Someone who plays video games for ten hours a day, for example, would be considered an idle person," says Li Yingyun, Sesame's Technology Director. "Someone who frequently buys diapers would be considered as probably a parent, who on balance is more likely to have a sense of responsibility." So the system not only investigates behaviour - it shapes it. It "nudges" citizens away from purchases and behaviours the government does not like.

Friends matter, too. The fifth category is interpersonal relationships. What does their choice of online friends and their interactions say about the person being assessed? Sharing what Sesame Credit refers to as "positive energy" online, nice messages about the government or how well the country's economy is doing, will make your score go up.

Higher scores have already become a status symbol, with almost 100,000 people bragging about their scores on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter) within months of launch. A citizen's score can even affect their odds of getting a date, or a marriage partner, because the higher their Sesame rating, the more prominent their dating profile is on Baihe.

Sesame Credit already offers tips to help individuals improve their ranking, including warning about the downsides of friending someone who has a low score. This might lead to the rise of score advisers, who will share tips on how to gain points, or reputation consultants willing to offer expert advice on how to strategically improve a ranking or get off the trust-breaking blacklist.

Indeed, Sesame Credit is basically a big data gamified version of the Communist Party's surveillance methods; the disquieting dang'an. The regime kept a dossier on every individual that tracked political and personal transgressions. A citizen's dang'an followed them for life, from schools to jobs. People started reporting on friends and even family members, raising suspicion and lowering social trust in China. The same thing will happen with digital dossiers. People will have an incentive to say to their friends and family, "Don't post that. I don't want you to hurt your score but I also don't want you to hurt mine."

Currently, Sesame Credit does not directly penalise people for being "untrustworthy" - it's more effective to lock people in with treats for good behaviour. But Hu Tao, Sesame Credit's chief manager, warns people that the system is designed so that "untrustworthy people can't rent a car, can't borrow money or even can't find a job". She has even disclosed that Sesame Credit has approached China's Education Bureau about sharing a list of its students who cheated on national examinations, in order to make them pay into the future for their dishonesty.

Penalties are set to change dramatically when the government system becomes mandatory in 2020. Indeed, on September 25, 2016, the State Council General Office updated its policy entitled "Warning and Punishment Mechanisms for Persons Subject to Enforcement for Trust-Breaking". The overriding principle is simple: "If trust is broken in one place, restrictions are imposed everywhere," the policy document states.

For instance, people with low ratings will have slower internet speeds; restricted access to restaurants, nightclubs or golf courses; and the removal of the right to travel freely abroad with, I quote, "restrictive control on consumption within holiday areas or travel businesses". Scores will influence a person's rental applications, their ability to get insurance or a loan and even social-security benefits. Citizens with low scores will not be hired by certain employers and will be forbidden from obtaining some jobs, including in the civil service, journalism and legal fields, where of course you must be deemed trustworthy. Low-rating citizens will also be restricted when it comes to enrolling themselves or their children in high-paying private schools. I am not fabricating this list of punishments. It's the reality Chinese citizens will face. As the government document states, the social credit system will "allow the trustworthy to roam everywhere under heaven while making it hard for the discredited to take a single step".

Trump’s tactics further deepen the distrust, analyst says

Xi lacks wiggle room as hardliners around him feel emboldened

After a weekend of confusing signals, Trump’s credibility has become a key obstacle for China to reach a lasting deal with the U.S., according to Chinese officials familiar with the talks who asked not to be identified. Only a few negotiators in Beijing see a deal as actually possible ahead of the 2020 U.S. election, they said, in part because it’s dangerous for any official to advise President Xi Jinping to sign a deal that Trump may eventually break.

In off-the-cuff remarks to reporters at the Group of Seven summit in France on Monday, Trump claimed that Chinese officials called “our top trade people” and said “let’s get back to the table.” In subsequent appearances he portrayed the outreach as evidence China was desperate to make a deal: “They’ve been hurt very badly, but they understand this is the right thing to do.”

It all made for splashy headlines and momentarily boosted stocks, but nobody in Beijing officialdom appeared to know what he was talking about. Even worse, his efforts to depict China as caving in negotiations actually confirmed some of their worst fears about Trump: that he can’t be trusted to cut a deal.

“Trump’s flip flop has further enlarged the distrust,” said Tao Dong, vice chairman for Greater China at Credit Suisse Private Banking in Hong Kong. “This makes a quick resolution nearly impossible.”

Two Chinese officials likened the country’s approach to the U.S. during the Korean War, saying it consisted of fighting while talking, and using fights to speed up talks. China has prepared contingency plans in case of a no-deal scenario, three officials said, including putting U.S. companies on its unreliable entity list and stimulating the economy.

China’s foreign ministry on Tuesday again said it was unaware of the phone calls mentioned by Trump, reiterating a statement immediately after his remarks. One of the first to call out Trump was Hu Xijin, chief editor at the Communist Party-backed Global Times newspaper, who said Monday that the U.S. president was exaggerating the significance of low-level talks and China’s position hadn’t changed.

While officials in Beijing are still willing to engage in trade talks, they are concurrently girding for a decoupling from the world’s biggest economy -- an effort made all the more acute when Trump “ordered” U.S. companies via Twitter to look for alternatives to China. After trade talks broke down in May, Xi renewed calls for China to pursue “self-reliance” in key technologies and even called on citizens to join a “new Long March.”

“A gradual decoupling is happening de facto because companies have to make alternative plans when there’s so much uncertainty,“ said Tim Stratford, chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China and a former assistant U.S. trade representative.

The conflict has inflicted pain on China, exacerbating the slowest economic expansion in almost three decades as authorities also seek to keep a lid on debt and financial stability risks. Still, officials have room to loosen policy further: The central bank last week unveiled a major reform designed to help lower borrowing costs, and the government is considering allowing provinces to issue more bonds for infrastructure investment.

Politically, Xi doesn’t have much wiggle room to indulge Trump. Hardliners have become more emboldened each time Trump has shattered a temporary truce and hit China harder, from raising tariffs to blacklisting leading tech company Huawei Technologies Co.

While China has been open to a deal that includes greater purchases of U.S. agriculture goods, it’s politically unfeasible for Xi to sign off on an agreement that leaves the punitive tariffs in place. He also can’t agree to privatize parts of the economy that are crucial to the Communist Party’s grip on power, such as certain state-owned enterprises.

Party Legitimacy

“For China, it is about legitimacy of the Party’s rule -- economic performance and nationalism, especially about the rise of the Chinese people on the world stage,” said Suisheng Zhao, executive director of the Center for China-U.S. Cooperation at the University of Denver’s Graduate School of International Studies. “Both are at stake, and China can’t afford to lose. China is not likely to make any substantial concessions currently.”

For now, the two sides are technically supposed to meet next month to resume trade talks. From China’s perspective, progress primarily depends on Trump’s political calculations heading into the 2020 election -- and even then they will want iron-clad reassurances he makes good on his word.

Trump may be realizing that his China-bashing will be “disastrous” for the U.S. economy and American companies, according to Charles Liu, a former economic negotiator with the Chinese delegation at the United Nations and founder of Hao Capital.

“The only thing that conceivably has changed is that Trump is under a lot of pressure to make a deal -- not the Chinese, Trump,” Liu said. “The Chinese position will be that if you want to talk, the door is always open, but this bullying is not going to be helpful for the discussion.”
