When I worked at DEC in the 80s we had these HP 7580 pen plotters, absolute monsters that could do color plots on D-sized drafting paper, which is an enormous 22x34 inch work area. Slow but super cool to watch in action, and the results had that vector display accuracy you couldn't get on regular printers of the time.

(To be honest though what I saw it getting used for most was plotting gate array layouts for chips we were designing, so people could hang them in their office.)

Lovecraftian Influence in ORV

On a sleepy bus ride, a few months ago, I was peacefully listening to the s2 this BBC podcast called The Lovecraft Investigations(the name of s2 is "The Whisperer in Darkness").

It is a mystery thriller/horror fiction podcast created, written and directed by Julian Simpson, based on the modernization of several works of H. P. Lovecraft & presented as a podcast-within-a-podcast in which the two hosts of the Mystery Machine, a true crime podcast investigating cases related to the occult and conspiracy theories.

I was listening to ep6 at that time & some minutes in, the podcast describes a "series of things" that strongly remind me of ORV, all traces of sleepiness gone. (following text snippets have been taken from the Pleasant Green wiki, with some additions by me):

Eleanor explains that Nyarlathotep is supposedly the avatar of Azathoth, an entity that is dreaming the universe into existence. But Azathoth is unaware of this? Nyarlathotep goal is to trick humanity into opening a portal to Azathoth's Dreamlands and let Azathoth enter our reality, an act that would send the human race into collective insanity...

The episode definitely goes into more detail but I'm too lazy to do a transcription now. However, I think this short summary from the ep does race a few flags- entity who dreams the universe into existence? avatar of the entity? HEY THIS IS SIMILAR TO MAD & SECRETIVE PLOTTER.

I tried to find if anyone else on the internet(a common fan of Lovecraft & ORV) had noticed this & I found one, very detailed post on Reddit. This confirmed my suspicion & also fueled my curiosity more- I had to see for myself how deep the links went.

Last Daily Blog September 19, 2023

Well, it was worth a try, but this didn't turn out like I hoped. For one, I couldn't keep up with a Daily blog or Weekly. My priority has always been on getting my writing done first, and since I've gone to a scheduled posting of once a week for my WIP, I haven't found the time. And since the goal of this was for more fandom interaction, I kind of failed there, too, so I lost the inclination.

I'm also going to stop posting my weekly WIP fic updates. My last post last Tuesday, and Reblog the next day got one Like. There could be a variety of reasons, but this is consistent. If I post a rec for someone else's fic or reblog something, I'll get a fair amount of Likes and Reblogs. If it is my own work....... So, since I have less than 200 followers, it's not a productive way to promote my own work. In other words, my fandom ego gets embarrassed. I do understand that I tend to write niche or on-the-edge Drarry fics. From politics to trans-female!Draco with Harry during the 2-year transition, and this one where we have bi-sexual!Harry (Draco's is in Azkaban for 30 years, and Harry has to marry to uphold the family bloodline). I get it. LOL

So, one last time: Chapter 15 of The Azkaban Letters is up. Next week Harry enters the Portrait Room to meet all of his ancestors.

Okay, enough about my personal issues. BTW I will continue reccing fics and watchout, @hd-fan-fair is coming up in October!

What I've Been Reading:

I'm thoroughly enjoying @oflights The Star Splitter. This is a Drarry Chapter fic that is updated regularly.

Summary:

On a routine time travel assignment to the past, Draco stumbles upon 7-year-old Harry Potter and witnesses his neglect and mistreatment by the Dursleys. In the moment, there is only one solution, even if it goes against all his training as a Time Agent: he has to bring Harry back to the future with him. In which Draco burns his life down for the sake of his former school rival.

@oflights is such an amazing plotter. Currently, there are seven chapters posted (34.5K), and Draco is in so much trouble that I haven't a clue how it can get resolved. It's truly delicious reading about Draco taking care of 7-year-old Harry but knowing he shouldn't be.

@squintclover is a new author for me. She's got a very sweet 2 chapter fic going on where the first chapter has been posted. Twirling Cords (like in the muggle movies). I liked it so much that I perused her other fics posted and found this amazing gem. For anyone who loves Matilda and Ms Honey, Harry Potter; Miss Drew's Class; Y4 (2K) is a must read.

How could I not do this section without mentioning thee amazing @sitp-recs. Reccer Extraordinaire! I'm guessing every one of my followers is a follower of Liv. Her pinned post is so nice and simple, but OMG there is so much under all of those links.

I was in complete awe this past Spring/Summer when she did the Rapid Fire Rec series. I mean come on, how did she do that? Someone gives her a prompt, and she turns around and gives 3 stories dealing with that prompt.

Liv doesn't do Fic Finds; she doesn't tolerate hate or neg comments. What she does is spread Drarry (fic and art) love in every way you can imagine. Tons of love and respect for @sitp-recs for all she does to keep Drarry and some of those rare pairs alive in hp fandom.

One last resource. I've had this on my list to post, but I couldn't track down the author. For those who write about Harry's childhood abuse, this is for you. If you know who compiled this list, please let me know, and I'll give the credit! It's well deserved.

Accuser devils are small creatures that conjoin a plump human baby with a fly's body. A long, sharp tongue extends from their mouth, which it can use to pierce enemies, though they are poor fighters and are rarely used for such purposes. Instead, they are used as spies and messengers, recording and passing along information important to its master. They will exploit poorly worded orders however, overstepping bounds to try and manipulate the weak willed into all manner of trivial evil. Poor plotters with no higher goal to their schemes, these independent actions very often lead to the creature's discovery and destruction, an inconvenience for the devil that commanded them. Rarely does such an inconvenience go unanswered in some capacity.

Belier devils are masterful manipulators and unparalleled at possession. In their natural form they appear as a 16 foot long slug, with a leech's mouth at one end and three humanoid heads on the other. It speaks with any combination of these heads, which all sound pleasant in their own unique ways, and is exceptionally skilled at drawing targets into its web, alternatively praising, insulting, threatening, and begging as works for its cause. Sometimes it will even pretend each head has a different personality and play them off each other. They will possess their way through useful pawns, promising great rewards or threatening horrific punishment to get close to its true targets, usually high positioned individuals as whom it can spread its influence over large areas. Those stepping stones along the way to its position of power are usually removed once it passes on, disposed of so they can never mention its possession of them.

Natural 20: Instead of taking double damage, the target is instead weakened (hard save ends, 16+). Flight. Invisibility: While not engaged, the accuser devil can turn invisible as an at will standard action. It becomes invisible when it attacks. The accuser devil takes 1d6 damage each time it uses invisibility while it’s staggered. Free-Form Ability - Record: The accuser devil constantly records all that it sees, and can pass that information on to another. For ever round it maintains contact with a willing creature, it can show that creature 1 hour of events it has seen (without sound or other senses). It can never replay those specific events again. Belier Devil (Bdellavritra)  Large 9th level spoiler [devil]  Initiative: +10 Lashing Tongues +14 vs. AC (3 attacks) - 30 damage. Natural 16+: The target also loses a recovery. R: Blasphemous Demand +14 vs. MD (one nearby enemy) - 65 psychic damage. Natural Even Hit: The target also makes a basic attack against a target of the belier devil’s choice within reach, or takes an additional 6d6 psychic damage (belier devil’s choice). Natural Odd Hit: The target is stuck and takes a -4 penalty to all defenses until the end of the belier devil’s next turn. Natural 17+: 1/battle, instead of the normal effects of this attack, the belier devil can choose to disappear from the battle and possess the target’s body (hard save ends, 16+). While it’s possessed, the target is stunned and the belier devil can’t be targeted by attacks or other effects, and isn’t affected by any ongoing effects. On each of the belier devil’s turns, it can force the confused target to move and make a basic attack against a target of its choice. When the target saves or is reduced to 0 hit points, the belier devil reappears next to the target. Devil’s Due (Whispers in Your Ear): When you choose to add the escalation die to an attack against the belier devil, you take a -4 penalty to MD until the end of your next turn. Free-Form Ability - Possess: The belier devil can possess a willing creature indefinitely. Willing in this case is any NPC the belier was able to manipulate or threaten into letting it hop onto their soul. Recognizing the creature is possessed is a hard, epic-tier challenge (DC 30). I'm finally home from Hell work, so here's the rundown on how I'm gonna handle Spammy for the event!

I'm gonna consider this post a tentative-maybe-plotting-ad, I'm not sure if I'll cap it or not. I know I still havent gotten around to hitting ppl up on the main perma plotter but I'm gonna be better about that this time around because the event sounds pretty rad. Usually I wing it, but I'm game to plan stuff out too.

More ideas + some info under the cut!

Spamton has absolutely no fucking clue what's going on or who the girl on the screen was, but she had him at "rewards." He loves those!!

Also; Be warned that if he sees a treasure chest he's gonna wanna open it.

BIOMES

Fantasy ~ While he's not much of a tank (his defense stat in game is literally zero) he can hold his own in a fight if he gets some distance and he can heal allies, but only once. I'm not sure how this place would go down...

Space ~ He's got great vision in the dark and he's a real pro at hiding from danger but, again, he can't take many hits and his main damage dealing attack would more than likely break a window by mistake. At the very least, he might be useful for creating distractions with his minitons. Also, he can fit in vents!

Sea ~ This one sounds super fun!!!!!! He'd be a classic merman with a toy/robotic fish lower half and the attention span of a gnat. Look how fast he can swim!! I don't think the minitons can swim, though.

Jungle ~ He's fast and reactive enough to avoid a lot of traps, but I can't see him and his stubby legs navigating very well at all in a jungle. To say he'd need some help would be an understatement, whether he gets that through somebody else making a path or them outright carrying him when things get rough. But! He can set off some traps from a distance...

Speaking of,

ABILITIES They're already listed in full on his app, but here's how I see them potentially playing out in the event;

Money Vacuum ~ Not very useful here at all, unfortunately. Most monsters dont have pockets to pull money out of...

Word Bullets ~ His go-to attack for dealing sure damage, but not wise to use indoors since the words have to go somewhere.

Minitons ~ I actually see this as being the most useful, or the second most useful, of his abilities here. The little minitons run around aimlessly for the most part, but can be directed to cause a distraction or set off traps and can deal little amounts of damage on their own.

[Press F1 For] HELP ~ The healing I was talking about! The little angel miniton he summons can heal a party member for 50% of their hp! He can only do this once per day.

Head Expansion ~ Why would you want him to do this??

I think that about does it? Spamton's already been through his main plot in game and has zero access to his NEO form, so tough luck for him, but also he's more likely to help other people out than he used to be.

I'll hit up the couple people that already showed interest in a little bit!
