i was rewatching hospital scene, our beloved, and realized that for someone who lost everything, vegas actually won the most in the end. his father is dead, he is free from doing the job he hated, he has pete and macau, and a happy hospital ending. he can build a new life, read books, learn to cook and spend time with his family, and heal from the abuse.

meanwhile we have unhappy kim and chay, porsche who became everything he hated in some ways (he did found his mom and kinn at least), and as far from his beach bar dream as possible, kinn who is still just a chessboard piece (got porsche though) and not that happy about his job either if episode 6 tells us anything. so in the end "the villain" got the best outcome? kinnporsche is insane?

nonnie you are SO RIGHT. the way that vegas hits rock bottom and still sorta wins in the end?? very not normal about it 😭 i also really love the nuance of the ending overall. kinnporsche slaying as Mafia Boyfriends™, but ultimately trapped by korn (always emo about the beach bar.. just terrible), kimchay being miserable with their unresolved issues, despite being the couple that arguably has the least baggage (? i mean it's still a lot though) .... meanwhile beloved hospital family, dysfunctional as it is, gets to end on a pretty positive note! vegas is alive, for one, and as you pointed out, he has pete and macau and is free from his horrible father! so yeah, lots of unexpectedly good stuff going on there <333

now, obviously our dear family's situation isn't perfect - vegas still has to cope with his life being turned upside down, and while they're supposedly "out" of the mafia, it's hard to know what korn has planned for these three in the future. and sure, all of them have LOADS of trauma to work through, what with the torture and the abusive fathers, etc. but what i really love about the happy moments throughout the series is how they exist in spite of all the darkness. against all odds, these people have survived and gotten to spend, at the very least, a peaceful moment with each other. the "antagonist" of the story (if kinn is to be read as the "protagonist", that is) gets the chance to start anew with the people he loves most. and wow, isn't that just something?

one more thing, since i'm incapable of shutting up about this: i will never be over just how completely the show sold me on vegaspete. all the pieces just came together, and by the time we got to the finale, it was insane how cathartic and satisfying that hospital scene really was. so much has been said about this already, but i still can't believe the extent to which i fell in love with these freaks... and by that i mean occasionally disregarding the main couple (the literal name of the show????) in the second half of their arc and wanting to skip back to the deeply toxic, painful, walking-daddy-issues-in-a-trenchcoat pairing. (not like kp doesn't have any problems.. but c'mon lol.) anyway, i guess what i'm trying to say is that, while i never anticipated this, i'm really quite happy to be here 😅😅

Between Us episode 11

So good! Honestly with this show I’ve only been truly meh on 1.5 episodes 😂 the open house episode and the one directly following it.

Anyway, love the communication from Win and Team. I normally HATE the “let’s grab a guitar and sing a song” troupe (like that’s a big part of why I skipped or took out my earbuds during most KimChay scenes in KP) but what I found endearing about it here was 1) Win didn’t play lol he strummed once and just sang - which makes sense cause Win can’t play guitar. 2) they BOTH were still actively crying and their voices broke while they tried to sing. Is the singing troupe stupid? Yes. Was it more in character with these two and with how it was done? Also yes!

I love how Team’s insecurities were mostly around misreading Win and not giving Win enough back - it feels super on point and Prem did a great job.

Broccoli plushy Valentine’s Day gift was perfection and so perfectly them!

THANK THE DAMNED GODS Tul did the right thing and called Win about Waan. I was expecting the typical drama bull of Tul rushing off to the house…thankfully he was a smart cookie

Manaow and Pruek are adorable and I’m glad we got something

I’ve read what’s available of Hemp Rope and am…not concerned per say, but have trepidation in the show’s ability to “resolve” Team’s story in only one episode. Though I think we are getting a special (?) though that would likely be time just to LDR or towards the end of it.

Okay….I can’t stand B and Prince….it’s absolutely pointless to the story AND why give us this side couple when they could have focused more on Manaow and Pruek? Even Tul and Waan for that matter - they at least are naturally connected to the story because of Win…I just, whoever decided to give the least plot connected side pairing THE MOST screen time does not understand storytelling…I’m just grateful I can skip it and since it has absolutely nothing to do with ANY OTHER plot point I miss nothing

As much as I love the series and the ship I still can't accept what happened and that it's just brushed off after Kinn apologizes for "crossing a line" by which he just means losing professionalism by sleeping with one of his subordinates (which is already very questionable in and of itself)

Unpopular opinion time: I actually kinda liked the KPTS ending for KimChay.  I genuinely found it to be a very hopeful open ending. (we’re gonna straight up ignore the ‘stage play’ ‘side story’ from the world tour, okay, bc wtf was that no)

Hear me out.  I know we’re all sad that Kim broke Chay’s heart.  That baby was so pure and seeing him sobbing was devastating.  But…… I actually think this heartbreak was crucial to making this relationship healthier in the long run.  (and not just bc it unearthed all the lies)

Both KinnPorsche and VegasPete get flack for being ‘unhealthy’ relationships.  But here’s a thing I don’t see people talking about enough: KimChay also was not a healthy relationship.  Putting aside the fact that Kim was lying to Chay the whole time – say they met and Kim was genuinely just a burgeoning singer who agreed to be his tutor etc. solely bc Chay was a huge fan it still would not have been healthy. The power imbalance was so skewed in Kim’s favor there was really no way to right it through the course of the show.  The way their relationship progressed, there was never a natural time/way to level the playing field.

I genuinely think that Chay finding out Kim lied and is a deeply imperfect human (and Kim basically doubling down on that by not admitting his feelings in the end) can do nothing but benefit them in the long run.  Assuming they’re able to recover from that deceit at all, but for the sake of argument I’m assuming eventually Kim will wear him down.  Bc now Chay can return to this relationship without having Kim up on the pedestal he’d placed him on.

No relationship is ever going to be equal when one of them had a SHRINE to the other before they even met.  Like, if this was real life it’d be a big ole red flagged YIKES.  If Chay were my little brother I’d be extremely concerned that Kim was only interested bc he got uncomplicated and complete adoration from Chay in exchange for (let’s be honest with ourselves) the bare minimum.  And I don’t think Kim wanted that, I think by the end he really did see Chay beyond ‘an adoring fan’ (because Chay is an absolute open book incapable of dissembling)... but I think most of his hesitation in returning Chay’s feelings came from his knowledge that Chay did not and could not see him because of everything Kim was hiding.  And you know how it goes when you start thinking it’s too late to reveal the truth.

But once Kim breaks Chay’s heart, the truth is revealed, and he begins to put in the work to win Chay back so he can prove that he wasn’t just using Chay (either for the ego boost or solely  for information), the scales start tipping in Chay’s direction.  Suddenly he has power in this relationship for the first time.  Bc ultimately, the shattering of Chay’s illusions is crucial to them rebuilding a healthier relationship.  Chay *has* to lose those rose colored glasses in order to see Kim clearly in all his imperfect, emotionally constipated, violent, and murderous glory, so he can decide if he really wants that man.  

I think Chay was *infatuated* with Kim, definitely, and that’s a kind of love.  But it’s not a sustainable love.  He loved an *idea* of Kim that he shaped around his adoration of WIK.  And now he has the chance to genuinely love KIM, the complicated and layered and imperfect man; if he wants to.  From here, any relationship they build will be on more equal footing.  Both of them seeing the truth in one another and loving each other for their complete selves.

And *that* is what I love about the BoC ending for KimChay.  I know it’s an ‘open’ ending, but I think as far as open endings go it’s very hopeful.  Kim sending Chay a video of him playing HIS song saying “look, we’re equals” and Chay not closing the door on communication?  So much hope there for a happy reconciliation in their future.

I opted out of a full review of KinnPorsche because everyone else was doing so much and talking about it. You can read what I did think on MDL.

My short summation is as follows (be warned, I was not a fan of this show). I’m not tagging my posts for KP because the fandom is so rabid and I don’t feel like arguing about it. 

KinnPorsche Thoughts 

VegasPete were in one drama; KimChay were in another; KinnPorsche were in each of those randomly but then sometimes in their own extremely slapstick cheese-fest alt-reality + Tankhun. There were clearly 2 directors with 2 distinct and conflicting points of view, who apparently never had a single conversation with each other. The whole thing felt discombobulated both from script to direction to post production. 

Was this show good? Nope.

Was it absorbing? Sure. 

Was it well acted? Absolutely. 

Were the sex scenes great? Yes. 

Were the fight scenes awesome? Actually yeah (special props to Jeff for the hand-to-hand stuff). 

Did I enjoy the kinky bits? Certainly. 

But all that said: the VegasPete universe of KP was the only universe I really enjoyed and would like to revisit, and I only got that 1/5 of the time. Mathematics is working against this one, for me personally. 

So I guess I, at least, am still waiting for the perfect mafia BL. I think it might be up to Japan at this juncture. 

As a result of fan fervor meets my own hearty indifference, I don’t really know how to judge this show but I have to go with my heart, and KP didn’t win it.

Chemistry of the 3 Pairs 

Much as I love Jeff I thought KimChay’s chemistry was non-existent and the producers made a big mistake losing Gameplay. He would have done a much better job with the role for all he’d too old. Sorry not sorry. I say that not because I object to busting up pairs (I’m actually in favor of this) but because I think Jeff’s understandable paranoia about Barcode’s age leaked into their performance. There is a reason why actors are usually cast closer in age for comfort reasons, also to avoid minors (Although I do talk about the hung effect when it works, it works really well.)  

My thoughts on VegasPete’s winning chemistry here. 

I thought KinnPosche also had decent (if very cheeky) chemistry. It got a bit too sappy for me in the second half, much like the evolution of TharnType’s chemistry from season 1 to season 2. 

Also, like MewGulf, I got good friends + power differential + game to fuck with us from MileApo. But I am fine with that. I like it when the actor pairs fuck with dumb IRL shipping culture and idiot fandom. Partly I think we’re right back in early MaxTul territory: when we have a rich kid playing the game, he comes to the table with enough wealth and status and publicity training to torpedo straight-boy ego fears. But are MileApo as smart as MaxTul about brand? I don’t know. 

Will they be MaxTul level kings of fuckatude going forward? They could be, but like I said, I get more MewGulf vibes from them, so I think they will fold as a pair after the fan crazy does. Here’s hoping they go down classy.

BRUH! I don't really associate with my ovaries these days, but they were really tryna associate with me when Kim fuckin took out all those guys by himself so stylishly!? And if Chay had seen that he'd've been so impressed so I thought it was actually pretty cool of Kim to just leave so he still has to make an effort to communicate with Chay and win him over honestly. Not So Cool leaving poor Chay all alone to find those bodies while Kim fucked off to sexily drape himself over some stairs to smoke. So what you think of KimChay now? I still like them.

Okay so first of all hiiii brotherrrr hiiii! Lol I love you the way you phrased this is SENDING ME. I definitely associated tf outta Somethin watching him fight like that, and also props to fuckin Jeff for that choreo??? Like idk how much action he's done but he fuckin nailed that and he looked fine af doin it.

But anyways! Back to business! Kimchay business! First off I totally get why he left without talking to Porchay. To me it seems like his whole reason for breaking up with Porchay had less to do with the mafia and more as viewing himself as the threat. It was kind of hard to understand before we watched him go all John Wick but Kim is not only a dangerous person but he enjoys violence, the whole cool musician persona is a coping mechanism to get away from his belief he's a bad person. And while he had been working towards eventually reaching out again, you can see why he would balk at literally splattering the floor with the evidence of everything he hid from Porchay and that being the first time they talk. So I get the walking away, even if I would have killed to see that confrontation between them with dead bodies literally everywhere 😂 and I have a feeling the sudden massacre appearance might make poor baby chay a little jumpy for a while

As for how I feel about them overall, I will admit to be somewhat unsatisfied with how the series ended them. Not so much because it's open ended, but because for me the big question was "Can Kim actually face himself enough to have an honest conversation with Porchay and put them on the path to fixing things?" And while the video was sweet and romantic enough to break both mine and Porchay's hearts, it didn’t answer that question. So I am definitely still obsessed with them and not too disappointed, but here's hoping we actually get a s2 because Kim still has soooo far to go

KinnPorsche - Finale

Wow, that final episode was amazing! I love how they tied most loose ends up if S2 doesn't end up happening - it ended in a satisfying way but left just a few breadcrumbs setting up a second season if it’s greenlit.

Here are my final thoughts:

Kinn and Porsche 💜 got a happy ending, which I hoped they would. After all, they are the main couple. MileApo are godtier! I will never be able to put into words just how grateful I am to them for putting their heart and soul into these characters and in this couple. I love that Kinn and Porsche are now Mafia King husbands where the rift between the Main and Minor families is starting to close. This is also how it ended in the novel. I think Porsche will be a good influence on the Minor family and will bring some humanity in. It also sets up potential angst between KP in S2. But if they could overcome everything thrown at them this season, they can overcome anything.

This couple is everything and has cemented themselves as my #2 OTP ship after WangXian.

VegasPete 🩸💜🥀 Wow, is all I can say. Despite VP not starting until later in the show, this couple was everything I hoped it would be (aka still dark but Pete being in on the darkness). Bible is phenomenal - in the hands of any other actor, Vegas wouldn't be as loved as he is, even after everything he’s done. Also knew he wasn't dead (though I got scared for a second there). Vegas didn't die in the novel and BOC changed the car crash to a gunshot (probably ran out of budget by then) and it made it more emotional with Pete crying over his body. I’m happy Vegas-Pete-Macau have each other.

KimChay 🌸 Bittersweet ending which I’m happy with. Chay is still so young and they both need to find themselves separately before coming together as one. This ship ended on a hopeful note.

Other thoughts:

All the emotional feels when Vegas called Porsche and warned him what his father was going to do. Essentially telling him, ‘Kinn is in danger, now is the time to act but also, sadly our short-term alliance must come to an end. I do like you, but I have to stand by my father’s side’.

Porsche/Porchay’s mother still being alive. Huge shock for everyone including novel readers. There is something mysterious about her - we don’t know the whole story. What was Gun about to reveal? Is she the true heir and Korn is keeping her locked up? Is she the one who killed her husband? Is she just as cunning and as willing to use her children for her own game as her brothers are? Is she faking her amnesia to keep her sons safe from something? Her expression in the last shot is up for interpretation: 1 - amnesiac woman cut off from the world who is damaged beyond repair - scared of her sons but with a hint of recognition; 2 - cunning and manipulative with a plan of her own; 3 - not their mother at all, or 4 - a woman being controlled by her brother and now has two children she needs to protect? They could take this is in either direction, I wonder which one they will choose.

Tankhun: 👑👑👑👑👑👑

I don’t trust Korn at all. The man clearly loves his children but he’s been poisoned by greed and power. He now controls all the pieces on the chessboard and looks invincible rn but for how long? Personally, really want Porsche’s mom to bring her brother down with the help of her eldest son and his husband - we need some badass Mafia Queens!

Vegas finally getting Kinn where he wants him, and knowing killing Porsche while he watches would break him the most. Like I said, Vegas clearly likes Porsche but he’s willing to do what he needs to, to win in his father’s eyes. All is fair in love and war.

Kinn/Porsche/Co. caring that Vegas is recovering. There doesn't seem to be bad blood between them a month later. They’ve all used one another in some form and they know they’re all fu*ked up in one way or another. But in the world of Mafia, they’re all each other has. I kinda like big fu*ked up families who want to kill each other one minute but deep down loves each other in that morally grey kind of way. 

Erika and Chan: Loyal to the end.

Those action sequences and KP GunTango? *Double chef’s kiss*

We all agree that Kinn and Porsche are married right?

In Conclusion:

What the hell do I do with my life now? But seriously, thank you to the actors, and to the crew and to BOC. They promised an adult, LGBTQ+ Mafia love story filled with morally grey characters, action, passion, lies and deceit, found family, comedy and above all a story of falling in love and what it means to be human. And boy did they deliver!
