By taking biopsies from long COVID patients before and after exercising, scientists in the Netherlands constructed a startling picture of widespread abnormalities in muscle tissue that may explain this severe reaction to physical activity.
Among the most striking findings were clear signs that the cellular power plants, the mitochondria, are compromised and the tissue starved for energy.
"We saw this immediately and it's very profound," says Braeden Charlton, one of the study's authors at Vrije University in Amsterdam.
The tissue samples from long COVID patients also revealed severe muscle damage, a disturbed immune response, and a buildup of microclots.
"This is a very real disease," says Charlton. "We see this at basically every parameter that we measure."

From NPR News:
As Time writes, "His accomplishment: inventing a soap that could one day treat and even prevent multiple forms of skin cancer. It may take years before such a product comes to market, but this summer Heman, who's 15, is already spending part of every weekday working in a lab at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, hoping to bring his dream to fruition."

Egypt has been certified as malaria free, with the World Health Organization (WHO) calling the achievement “truly historic” and the culmination of nearly a century of work to stamp out the disease. “Malaria is as old as Egyptian civilisation itself, but the disease that plagued pharaohs now belongs to its history and not its future,” WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement on Sunday. “This certification of Egypt as malaria-free is truly historic, and a testament to the commitment of the people and government of Egypt to rid themselves of this ancient scourge.”

From the article:
Any common face mask provides significant protection against the virus that causes COVID-19, but N95 masks are most effective at slashing the amount emitted by infected people, according to a University of Maryland-led study released Wednesday. So-called “duckbill” N95 masks scored highest in the study, which measured the exhaled breath of participants who were tested both masked and unmasked to measure comparative outputs of SARS-CoV-2. The inexpensive masks, which have two head straps and a horizontal seam, captured 98% of exhaled virus, according to the study published in eBioMedicine. The researchers also found that—in what might come as a surprise to many—cloth masks outperformed the specific brand of KN95 mask that was tested. Surgical masks brought up the rear in performance out of the four types, but even they blocked 70% of the virus, the tests showed. (To reflect the general public's use of masks, study volunteers were not fit-tested for their masks or trained how to properly wear them.) “The research shows that any mask is much better than no mask, and an N95 is significantly better than the other options. That’s the No. 1 message,” says the study’s senior author, Donald Milton, a professor of environmental health and a global expert on how viruses spread through the air.

FIJMU NEWS 12-19-23 by B.B. Farmüller
Baby formula maker Glerber has come under fire today for their new "Extreme Caffeine Baby Formula" which features 275mg of caffeine per metal "bottle." This is over 274mg more than the FDA recommended level of caffeine for babies.
According to Glerber Spokesperson Herb Glerber III, "Today's babies aren't your grandmother's baby. These babies are extreme to the max and need a more energetic milk or formula than any typical mother's titmeats can naturally provide." When asked for details on health warnings and FDA approval, Mr. Glerber pulled a gun and shot at us before jumping into a Lamborghini and driving away at 98mph through a busy school zone.
So far no medical harm has come to any infants known to have consumed the formula, as none have been found at this time. Most have simply exploded, run away, or transcended space and time with their new ability to transform the formula into the water of life and take their places as the new kwisatz haderach of the day-care center.

A simple blood test can detect Alzheimer’s up to 15 years before symptoms emerge, with experts claiming it could “revolutionise” early diagnosis of the disease.
Swedish trials found the test to be as accurate at detecting the signs of Alzheimer’s as painful lumbar punctures, and better than a range of other tests currently being worked on.
Experts say it could pave the way for a national screening programme for the over-50s, and that current treatments could work better with the cases picked up earlier.
The test works by measuring levels of a protein called p-tau217 in the blood that indicate biological changes taking place in the brain during Alzheimer’s disease.
It could identify patients as likely, intermediate or unlikely to have Alzheimer’s disease and potentially rule out the need for further, more invasive investigations.

OK. Go on Medicaid, and the US will stick your next of kin with your healthcare bills.
The umbrella that melts in the rain may also render your families homeless! After they direct you to get rid of all your money so you qualify!
I'm not thrilled with the idea that Canada could split me from my spouse if we need different levels of care when we get old and need it. I'm really not thrilled with the precarity of our housing situation here. But I am NOT going back to the States unless we win the goddamn lottery, and we don't PLAY the goddamn lottery.
I do not like how unsafe all our options are, and we're doing WELL. We still have SAVINGS.
This is so bad for so many people already and it's not getting better.
