HEADCANON. father’s love.
It’s no mystery that Mitch loves his father with a gravity he can feel but not seem to shake off. The heaviness of knowing his dad doesn’t feel the same about him is something that’s wrecked him for the longest time ; it’s been years of physical beatings at any time he sees him again, being called stupid, being reminded he’s not good enough, and seeing the blank cards at his birthday every year -- it’s gotten to the point where his father disowned him, taking him completely off his will, and won’t communicate with him to give him any sort of financial support for if he wanted to go to college.
Any time his father comes on campus for calls about Mitch’s behavior, it’s known by the bruises that suddenly appear on his face or the fact he limps for a while, even though he won’t admit it. A common theme for every time he’s in trouble, which can be something horrifying to him yet he’ll still take the blame for something if it means so much to a friend (ie a friend scared to get in trouble or someone who has a similar situation to him) and he’ll pretend he’s not bothered by the implications of this, though the furrowed brows and lowered head would give away how he feels when the staff tells him that they’ll be calling his dad. There are very few who actually attempt to connect the dots, and he pretends it doesn’t exist, even when asked.
No matter how bruised the chest, sore the stomach, fractured the bones, or bloody the lip.
It’s a part of himself that he knows is hypocritical of him, but the desperation from him to get his dad to approve of him has led him down a road where he’s craving to be seen as something worthwhile -- by basically anyone. After he’s disowned, it becomes apparent and strikes him hardest that his dad finally threw him away.
Whenever someone criticizes him, he takes it close to heart.

Mitch’s survivor verse has him taking on a lot of jobs, ngl:
Hunting
Reclaiming the School
Repairing the greenhouse (those freaking holes in it aren’t gonna fix themselves)
Cemetery rebuilding
Taking care of that building that burned down and putting useful rubble into storage
Beefing up the defenses around the perimeter of the school as it’s being reclaimed
Weapon carving
Looking into fixing up the bell tower (not the bell ; fuck the bell)
Scouting
Safe Zone Reclaiming

HEADACNON. the stabbing / hospital stay.
As someone who struggled with an abusive relationship turned attempted murder, the entire experience would leave him messed up. Not only would he spend days in the hospital to recover (their concern being over his mental health as a troubled youth at a tender age of sixteen, and the fact he suddenly had his mood descend from neutral to despondent), but his arm had nearly been the death of him. The cut had nicked an artery and, had he not been taken to the hospital as quickly as they had, he’d of died on campus.
Food would go untouched for the first two days after the surgery, gaze would stare at his feet, mouth turned downward... The only time he really gave cognitive answers when someone from the school came in, but, even those, held some negativity to them. With tears with Marlon’s visit, to faux happiness (pretending he wasn’t even remotely upset) when the others came in, the adverse reactions were alarming.
Once he started opening up, though, he’d really only talk to those who actually visited him regularly. Anyone who wasn’t a visitor to him on a consistent basis would receive curt responses to any questions ; those who actually came in would likely receive information to their questions, though his voice would shut down at times if he felt stress buildup too severely.

Mitchell “Mitch” Lee Young.                                                  ERICSON’S FILE:
Age(s): 8-13 Birthday: July 30th Comment(s)/Concern(s):
“Excessive usage of vulgar language, a high interest in anything destructive (highest interest being with explosives or fire), and a tendency for outbursts. While his temper is only incited by other students, it’s still concerning and something to take notice of (recommended: medication and constant psychological evaluation).”
“While he’s seen staring at the board upfront, whenever he is asked a question by the teacher, there is a higher chance he’ll refuse to answer or outright admit he wasn’t paying attention. Either he is unmotivated or there is something else (if this persists, proper forms may be required to understand what may be the issue).”
“Though he has issues bonding with other students at his age and his proclivity for aggressive outbursts is high, he excels in patience among younger kids inside the school. A bond between him and a younger boy, [redacted], grew quickly from the time they were first seen together to now; he even proclaims him his ‘best friend.’”
“A constant patient inside the nurse’s office with abrasions, lacerations, and bruises from his physical altercations with other students. Sometimes these actions are done by aggression, but these instances are growing less frequent in explanation as he tells Ms. Martin that it’s due to ‘rough housing.’”
“Refuses to commentate on his father when inquired about. There is no doubt they had a positive relationship prior to this date since there were no comments from Logan Young, neighbors, or teachers that would show concern. Mitchell has a tendency to not speak when he doesn’t want to get in severe trouble or has no comments that can counter a subject; it must be that he did something wrong to his father and fears he’ll be unable to participate in camps at the school if he talks about it.”
“A series of items were broken on the floor and a damaged instrument from the music room. The only ones in the room were Mitchell and two other boys [redacted] and [redacted]. He said it was his fault and that the other two boys had told him not to do it. It’s unclear if he took the blame for them or if he was telling the truth since it seems he’s known for having conflicting stories from his life about the children from his previous school.”

HEADCANON. if mitch had a kid.
Honestly, he’d probably be that one dad who gets on his kid’s nerves. The one kind of dad that checks in, makes sure they’re not in trouble, grounds them when they do something he’d of done as a kid (and then probably forgets he did since the grounding was good enough), and just overall wants to be the opposite of what HIS own dad was to him.
Of course, most parents like that get kids who will IMMEDIATELY talk bad about them once they reach a certain age where it’s “uncool.” Mitch will probably have that luck where he’s seen as “lame” or “always in their business” when he’s just trying to keep that connection strong ; however, his kid’s friends would probably think he’s pretty awesome lfdkjsafkldsaf like how many dads would be like, “YOU MICROWAVED A BRICK?! How’d that go?”
Be grateful, kid.

HEADCANON. one-sided feelings.
Truth be told, Mitch definitely had stronger feelings for Marlon than he did for anyone else. It’s an embarrassing fact for him to come to terms with, but they were there, constantly nagging at him over how close he and Marlon had become over the years. No matter how he sliced or diced  it, the bomb-loving teen definitely was crushing on the mullet-sporting, peach-fuzz faced, anger-internalizing leader.
His death stung for a multitude of reasons.

Road Trip TFS AU (wholesome stuff):
The kids at the school have an RV that requires a battery that they get from Clem’s car (lucky them that she totaled her car)! They were fixing it up to use in case of something going wrong, and, lo and behold, Clem and AJ coming into their community caused a whole bunch of walkers to break in and completely wreck up the place.
They find a temporary base for a night or two while they search for gas to fuel the RV. They end up getting DRUNK one night and just partying for a night (or as much of a party as you can have) -- sans AJ who only gets a sip and then is told he gets no more (he spends his time with Tenn who doesn’t join in) -- who participates varies on who wants to actually party around.
They share stories around the campfire about each of their files and end up bonding with games and who they are and where they came from.
Clem bonds closer to everyone by taking watch duty each night with someone new.
Brody and Clem end up talking about where they should end their RV trip for their brand new base. They don’t reach a conclusion but they do think that they should end up at the beach at one point.
They find a hospital and decide to try to explore it for anything that could be useful for down the road (ie medical tools and bandages).
They find a carnival that didn’t get to open and end up spending some time there, pretending they were actually doing things on rides and playing the games.
When it starts to snow, they end up sledding a couple of times just for the sake of it. AJ learns the word toboggan (both hat and sled). Mitch spends some extra time with the three youngest to let them have more fun while the others go inside and warm up for a while.
Mitch and the others take turns reading bedtime stories to the little kids / making up bedtime stories for them.
Older kids relive their favorite animated movies from when they were younger by singing lyrics and trying to remember the plots from those movies.

Take a chill day with Mitch on those rainy/stormy and dreary weather conditions. His favorite position is to curl up, arm around his s/o, and staring out the window, eyelids eventually collapsing to let him fall into comfortable slumber.

Concept: Lilly lives after the Delta leaves the kids alone at the school and Mitch finds out she likely ran off to Seattle based on a piece of paper he finds on school grounds that talks about the WLVs in a letter she wrote to another member of the Delta. Which means that her trying to forcibly recruit the boarding school for a war against another group would still apply (ie WLVs vs. Seraphites) and he’d have reason to want to storm the coastal city.
Mitch, being wary of her returning with more recruits, would head off after her to Seattle to kill her off before she and a squadron returned again.
Beware of the bomb-crafting, knife-wielding soldier that Mitch is because he won’t play around if he ever finds someone as a threat, and he’s known for some pretty messy tactics like throwing bottles to draw infected toward his targets.

HEADCANON. mitch’s video games.
I talk about his interest in video games a lot, but I never really elaborated on his interests. While he’s prone to violet and chaotic models of software and DETESTS rage-based games meant to drive him to a volatile reaction, he’s also got some games he absolutely cannot stand (or he’ll play but with regrets): choice-based games.
Decisions in those games sometimes leaves him stumped on what to do. If he had to play through his own game of twdg, he’d be more prone to following what Clementine wanted (until it came to Larry in the meat locker) since he’s got a soft spot for children (and he’d be nice to Duck because again it’s just a kid who’s really excited).
While in Season 2, he’d be more prone to follow Luke over Kenny or Jane since one shows signs of changing (as warned by Sarita) and the other shows signs of just leaving them when they need her most. Yes, he’d help and spare Sarah until the game fucks him over because, again, she’s just a dang kid. Once Luke dies, though, he’d probably be more likely to go with Kenny. Antagonizing a man who is clearly on edge isn’t going to solve anything and that’s what kept happening. While Arvo didn’t necessarily deserve some of what happened to him, this man came back and stabbed them in the back, so Mitch’s pity for him is subzero.
He hates choice-based games, but he also loves them because they test him to make his own choices. He’ll only stop playing them if his choice is heavily judged by someone else while doing it, because it just ruins any sort of atmosphere he has for the game itself.

You won’t get him to admit to it but his childhood was ripe with bullying. Outside of his home, he had to face countless people who resented him: neighbors and their kids mostly. The kids started off as pretending to like him, which would lead to them forcibly locking him into a shed and leaving him there for hours on end. The shed in the forest was filled to the brim with dust, dirt, rusted tools, and...insects. Most of them let him be, but...there were some that would slither around him and cause the worst reactions to manifest.
After multiple times of this happening, it went from faux friendship (haha, we were just kidding around last time) to him finally fighting back against them.
They hated him. He had to defend himself.
Of course, it’d eventually lead to his dad giving him the chemistry set to attempt to quell the fights he was getting in with the neighbors (you know, instead of asking why it was happening or talking to the parents/kids to knock it down like he should have).

In modern, he’s less likely to sing in front of people without some event happening that lights a fire underneath his feet. In the apocalypse (only in his survivor verses), he grows more used to it after he nearly dies and it slowly becomes something he feels like he can accomplish ; of course he’ll clam up if he’s made fun of and likely stops doing it in front of people for a long while.
He’s mostly used to singing in front of the kids, but I want him to branch out and become stronger with his soft love of music.

I’m fond for this but I like the idea that Mitch wrote his own song. Of course since others CAN do it, I can as well with it being Remember Me. He began to incorporate the melody later on in his survivor au while he worked on the defenses of the school in those hours he’d spend carving sharpened sticks for the pit ; his little area over there consists of a canteen, his acoustic guitar, his journal, his knives, and bundles of wood used to make his danger zone.

——————   AFTERMATH OF DISOWNING !
When he’s given notice that his father no longer sees him as a son on his eighteenth birthday, Mitch’s life spirals out of control his senior year. Self-destructive behaviors run rampant for him that nobody really seems to notice at first. Partying, breaking laws, alcohol, speeding, sleeping for longer and longer periods of time (sometimes 24 hours on the weekend), randomly committing to an action without thinking through it, skipping class more often, etc... He becomes a beacon of depression that he outshines with stronger emotional outbursts that can switch on a dime.
He sees he has no future for himself (no college since he’d seriously need financial aid and that’s hard enough, no place to stay, nowhere to go, no job good enough to keep him on his feet) and stops caring about it ; his actions are a cry for help but he’s too proud to actually admit it.
