"Sometimes the first thing that we're introduced becomes a best friend for life.
One of my closest friends as a small child just so happened to be a cartoon sponge who taught me about the joys of friendship, laughter, and having an open and caring heart." (Me.)
How many of you are able to remember the first thing that you're introduced to when it comes to the cartoon world? For me, other than Disney the first memory that I have of cartoons in my childhood was a sponge who lived in a pineapple under the sea. This certain sponge has left his impact on pop culture and has since never failed to let me down.
The first memory that I have of Spongebob involves watching the episodes with my dad. Now my dad has been known to be massively picky about the media that he consumes. It has to do something special otherwise he's not interested. At first, probably like most parents in the early 200s he thought that the idea of a cartoon sponge that lived in a pineapple under the sea sounded completely idiotic. But thanks to creatively funny writing, unforgettable voices, and stories that have become many a running joke Spongebob Squarepants has been something that children and their parents could watch together.
Now that I'm older and the show has been going on for probably way too long I still look back on those early episodes and both of the movies (I haven't seen the more recent one) with extreme fondness in my heart. The world that Stephen Hillenburg created so that children could learn about the ocean and one day protect it became such a cult phenomena that if you walk up to any child to this day and ask them what their favorite show is 9/10 they'll tell you that it's Spongebob. It doesn't matter the gender of the child because that's the amazing thing. Spongebob is almost completely gender neutral. It's not geared towards guys and it's not geared towards girls. Everyone can watch it and come out of it with the same experience. As a kid whenever I was sick or had a lonely day at school once I moved Spongebob was always there for me. He was the comfort that I needed.
Did anybody have Spongebob birthdays growing up? Because boy did I have one. My ninth birthday, the first one that we had at our massive house. It was the first time that I was able to throw a party in my own backyard because I finally had one. My parents went all out for this birthday because they knew how much the exuberant yellow sponge meant to me. We got a bouncy castle with most of the main cast on it, a cotton candy machine, my grandma baked my cake because this was back when she still lived with us, and I had friends that came to my party. Of course, there was a ton of sugar involved. But this became easily my favorite birthday that I ever had. Everywhere I looked Spongebob was there. On a birthday balloons, on my birthday card, outside on my bouncy castle, on streamers that went around our dinning room table, on my grandma's cake where she had bought figurines of all the characters. For a kid that loved this series more than anything else at that time, it was an absolute dream come true.
My dad still to this day calls me Spongebob as a running joke. It might be the loud and slightly obnoxious laugh, it might be something else but I've always related to Spongebob's optimism. I loved his view of the world and that is what continues to keep me coming back. It's what keeps me referencing the older episodes with my dad just going up to him and telling him to "bring it AROOOUND town" and he'll absolutely know what I'm talking about. So much of my childhood was spent in front of the television and watching Spongebob and his pals and I still have a deep unabashed affection for him.
