Do you ever just try to read something, and even though it’s a fun premise, the style of it manages to hit a ton of your writing pet peeves and you just can’t do it?
That was my experience tonight with “A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon” by Sarah Hawley.
#about books#a witch’s guide to fake dating a demon#sarah hawley#bookblr#in a nutshell#it’s a fun premise#ruined by#break neck pacing#swearing just for the sake of seeming ‘modern’ in the first chapter#a huge problem of#tell don’t show#for example#by the end of the first chapter I can’t picture the mc’s house/greenhouse with any degree of clarity#and when mc is nervously rambling to said demon#her dialog tag so helpfully/s says she “babbles when she gets nervous#like um we could see that’s exactly what was happening without that!#and the most egregious part?#this supposed feared and now disgraced demon#DOESN’T EVEN HAVE AN ACTUAL DEMON FORM#HE SHOWS UP AS A GENARIC ‘HOT BOI’ W/HORNS AND THATS IT#now granted#he might show that form later but I’m not about to slog through 20-something chapters of him and a dollar store fusion of#maribel madrigal#and#isabela madrigal#speed run a relationship to find out#book review#this has been a rant#writing pet peeves
