Digmon Adventure Tri review

Digmon Adventure tri, the digidestined join again for one last adventure.

To start this review, and for those who dont know, Digimon advnture tri is an official sequel to the original digimon that started in in 1999, 7 kids go on a summer camp and while there get transported to a digital world where creatures known as Digimon appear in front of them, from there we embark on an adventure as the tittle says, follwing this kids as they learn more about their environment and the world that surrounds them, the kids with names, Taichi Kamiya, Yamato Ishida, Kojiro Izumi, Sora Takenouchi, Takaishi Takeru, Kido Joe, Tachikawa Mimi, with the addition later on of Kari Kamiya, Taichis sister.

In a very black and white plot, they need to defeat the evil guy that wants to hurt them, but, is that all there is to the adventure? Not in reality,each of the creatures is given to a kid, each with their own personalities same as the kids, its up to them to learn and become friends with them, to teach and be taught, by fighting the final bad guy of the island they are in, is in that fight we see that the story may not be as kid friendly as it seemed, one of the creatures, Patamon, whom belongs to T.K in English or Takaishi Takeru in English, dies while in battle, it is worth mentioning that the creatures, very Pokemon style, can “digievolve” to new forms that give them more power, Patamon now transformed into Angemon dies in its fight, and we see a very real consequence to T.K, he sees his partner die in front of his eyes, this strains T.Ks mind as he gets comforted by his friends with the promise from Angemon that theyll meet again, keep in mind that these are kids, yet much like everyone, theya re forced to live with the consequences of a battle and that of a choice, that is what most of the series in reality has been defined, decisions.

Theres much more to be said about Digimon Adventure, but that is not for this entry, weve placed the tone for whats to come.

Digimon Adventure Tri, as said above, takes place 6 years after the final battle and events in Digimon Adventure,it all starts with the first movie Reunion, the kids now grown into their High School lives, are trying to live the lifes they have now that their partner Digimons stayed in the Digitalworld, we find one of the main characters Taichi, on his way to a school game, while going there he seems troubled by something but continues on, Yamato now has a rock band, while Kojiro Izumi has bloomed as a very smart person with his own company and technological knowledge, Joe Kido, being the eldest of the group has been on a troubled path in his College life, Mimi has been travelling abroad and not stayed with the group, but weird things are happening around town, Tai has focued too much on his sport activities and has not taken his college decisions seriously, something the other characters criticize him for, as things start to get weirder, a digimon shows up and start destroying things, Tai takes off to see what he can do but he no longer has his digimon partner nor do any of the other character, when he finds himself cornered a new digimon appears but this time, was his old partner, Agumon, with Tais help Agumon evolves and takes on fighting the enemy, as they are battling more buildings are destroyed, this affects Tai, as he realizes the fight, unlike when he was a kid, is having real meaningful consequences, people getting hurt, along wth his partner Tai manages to get the enemy to a different location less populated, where the other characters arrive with their Digimon partners.

They join the fight and when the enemy seems cornered a new shadow appears and captures the enemy taking him to a different dimension, still, Tai looks around and sees that his battle, and that of the others, has destroyed the city they live in, and starts questioning what his motives are for fighting or if he should at all, a few days later, Kojiro Izumi has developed a new way to remain in easy contact with the partner digimons, a new enemy, Alphamon, shows up, who proves to be much more pwoerful than any of the kids and their digimon, they need even more power, Tai in his internal conflicts believes that more fight will cause more damage and destruction, but Yamato Ishida stops him, and tells him, that he needs to stop running and face his fears, as in the moment Tai decides to fight bring for the power of Omegamon, after the battle ends Yamato tells Tai that he did good in fighting but hes a coward for running.

This speaks highly of the production value of the movie, same as many people, we all face the choices and our fears as life progresses, this is relfected in a beautiful way in Tais character, its fine to believe things as kids will turn out great, but, there are consequences, and they are as real for you as they are everyone around you.

The first movie Reunion, speaks more about the perils of growing up, what means to lead, what means to lose, and what it means for the characters to fight, after all, isnt that life itself.

Now we are in the second film, Determination, which places its focus on 2 other characters, Kido Joe and Mimi Tachikawa, Joe has been abscent from the fighting and Mimi has tried to adjust being back in Japan, after a small trip to a hot spring, new strange happen, Mimi is forced to fight with her partner Palmon, in doing so, their fight causes a Helicopter to be damaged, this causes a fight with Kojiro Izumi, meantime Joe has tried his best at his college test but keeps failing, he thinks that fighting and his role as a digidestined its too much to bear on top of his College problem, Joes parnet Gomamon, starts picking on this and after a disagreement he leaves, Joe and Mimi meet by chance next to river, where they both talk about some issues they have encountered, having this way, a real heartfelt moment, both characters talk about something that happens to everyone, the barriers of life itself.

Joe has been on a personal battle to fit into an early adulthood, something that in many ways is demanded of each person in society, but this has put too much stress on him, which in return causes him to fail the more he tries, whereas Mimi has tried her best to make her ideas into reality only for her classmates to reject this and calling her selfish, this is yet another aspect of the process of growing up, having ideas and hopes doesnt always mean they come a reality, youll be faced with barriers the more you want to achieve, its up to each person to deal with them and surpass them.

Later in the movie, Joe finds Gomamon and tries to talk about why he left, Gomamon explains that hes felt Joes lack of desire to fight and tells him he doesnt want to be a burden anymore to Joe and the life he wants, Joe gets angry and tells him that he doesnt feel this fight should be his duty, that just cause of being given something doesnt mean he wants, the people that want to fight then do so, Gomamon tells him that much like Joe he doesnt want to fight either but he has to and he wont run away from it, Joe gets angry at the last comment as he was called a coward that is running away, now I ask you, if you had been given a duty, would you take it to the end or will you also see the many implications this has?

During a fight with a new enemy, Gomamon finds himself at the border of perishing, Hikari finds Joe and confronts him about what hes doing, she tells Joe a truth that I believe personally to be important for everyone, is it that important for you to have a reason to do something? Do you need reasons to fight for those who need it? Faced with this Joe confronts his fears and goes to help Gomamon, he arrives in time and with his now renewed look on things helps gomamon achieve a new level of evolution, as the other characters wtch this, Joe tells Mimi that its fine if she continues to be herself, that is fine by itself.

Mimi by hearing this cheers up and also helps her partner evolve into a new form, at the end of the fight one of the new characters digimon partner goes berserk and kills one allied digimon, this shocks everyone and the movie ends with a cliffhanger for the new one.

This second installment talks much more about the many aspects of growing up in society, responsibility of your life, what you encounter in life, and that the outlook you have of it, will shape how things turn out.

Now we are in the Third movie, Confession, the characters still a little rattled about the events of the last movie, find themselves still trying to figure things out about whats happening, they manage to find out theres a virus causing all of this, Joe and Mimi have found new strength and this changes how they interact with the others, this time however, its focus shifts to other 2 characters, Kojiro Izumi and Takaishi Takeru, each characters has a crest Symbol, that signifies their most special trait, Taichi is Courage, Yamato-Friendship, Hikari-Light, Takaishi-Hope, Joe-Honesty, Mimi-Purity, Sora-Love, Izumi-Knowledge, this shows in how they act and behave, their most special trait.

During the movie of Confession, Izumi finds himself in a bind as he cant figure out the cause of the virus or how to stop, he only knows it can reach any digital form or life, which makes him fear that their Digimon partners can be infected, Takaishi comes to visit the Digimon and Patamon asks him to take it with him, this causes all the other Digimon to also want to get out,TK agrees to this as before Patamon had a small burst of rage and bites him, he thinks this a miss with Patamon and he realizes the digimon is infected, he tells one of the new characters about this, but doesnt to others, once again, we face a new aspect of life, wether we tell the truth or not, simple concept you may think, thats something that is learnt early in life, but, much like any other facet of life, this isnt quite black and white,a truth that may have a big consequence at a personal level, or postpone it or lie about it, what will that acomplish on all sides of the coin.

Meantime, Kojiro grows even more frustrated at his lack of progress, lets take a look at this, as we progress through obstacles, theres always the moment when we reach a barrier that we cant seem to find an answer or solution for the problem, yet we always seem in a rush to fix, answer or solve problems, its always easy to get lost in the way trying to do any of that, we lose sight of the bigger picture and miss what could be an easy answer, when in life do we stop looking at many options and focus on just finding one, is it easier? Is it simpler?

owldge is working against him this time, and in doing so hes missing the chances to see the answer in front of him, its only until his Digimon partner Tentomon faces him and tells him, that lately he doesnt seem to be enjoying the search for knowldge, something he used to enjoy when he was a kid, Kojiro feels the weight of this, and tries to change his outlook hence finding a possible answer that was starring at him all along.

Meantime Takaishi is faced bi his brother Yamato about his weird behavior, once again we are presented with a chance to appreciate the value of a honest answer or lack there of, how we assume the moment of truth, Takaishi feels this and decides to not say the truth, cause he thinks thatll make the other characters get him to get rid of his partner, Meicoomon, the new digimon partner of the new character, Meiko, and the cause of the death in the previous movie, shows up again and starts attacking, Patamon tells TK that if hes to become evil, to destroy him, TK refuses this idea but is contacted about the attack and heads off, in the battle Kojiro has proposed an idea to save the date of their digimon but things dont go as expected when all digimon become infected and go berserk, this makes Kojiros partner Tentomon reach a new level of power to help the others, but its too late, the data is reset and their partners are lost.

Now with no Digimon with them, TK says he knoew of patamon but was afraid of what telling the truth about him wouldve done, we always wonder what wouldve happened had we done something different, said different, or thought different about something, it makes things worst as the thoughts of guilt and remorse, we see the characters of the movie, not consumed, but faced with the aftermath of a choice, the confession that couldve been made, the missed knowledge.

Moving a few days after, each character seems to be trying to move on with their lifes, but not Kojiro, hes still looking for ways to bring back or see their partners again, after getting rejected by the others, he seems to be giving up, but one afternoon, they all seem to coincide in going to the same place, Tai looks over the sky, and tells everyone that, if they wait, if they sit and wait for things to get solved, theyll end up becoming adults as well, this is a metaphor saying that while adults wait for answers and solutions, as young people they can choose to take action and change the situation.

TK talks to the new character Meiko, and tells her, that even if she knew her partner was the cause of the problem, its not about placing blame or finding guilty people, its about the actions they get to make, she in guilt yells that she should be blamed, lets take another look at this.

Most of our lives, or a good part of it, we will ourselves trying to look at things to blame for the things that happen, but very rarely we stop and thing that those actions may be a cause of us, and it should be us go get blamed, not someone else, if you are reading this far, you may say, but I do blame myself for my failure, and you might be right, not everyone decides to blame everything but themselves,but we are guilty of doing that in several ocassions of our live, it will always be dependent on the individual to face their choices or to blame it on someone else, or on the other hand, comes times when theres only a huge pressure of guilt, that we feel we should be blamed and punished for that accordingly, some situations are out of our control, we can only work with what is given to us, our choices, once again, will shape what that becomes.

At the end of the movie, the characters choose to go back to the digital world, where they find their reborn partners, but they have no memory of them.

I now ask, havent these movies try to talk to us, the ones who grew up and try and make sense of life as we go, this movies have not been anything but a love letter, a pat on the back and a “go on, its ok, youll find answers”.

The 4th movie will be titled Loss, has not been released yet, but so far, it seems to deal on the barrier of trying to get to know someone, the rejection that comes with it, and the obstacles that will happen.
