Environment and Context

Evidence of depression can be found as early as  200 B.C. in Mesopotamia. The first records of depression regarded the illness as being a spiritual condition. Ancient society believed that depression was caused by demonic possession, and so it was treated by priests. Depression is now recognized as being caused by psychological, biological and societal factors. Depression is treated by varying combinations of therapy and prescriptions. These medications target neurotransmitters or more plainly stated, chemicals in the brain. In the United States suicide is the second leading cause of death among young adults. Depression amongst college students is a huge problem because of the high-stress environment of American educational institutions. Two major organizations that advocate for people with depression are the Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) and the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). HDRF focuses on finding new technology for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression and other emotional disorders. This foundation was started in 2006 and has since funded over 100 grants in 12 different counties to research new treatments for depression based illnesses. Their approach to research subverts the mentality of competitiveness and instead focuses on collaboration with other advocates and organizations. NAMI is an organization that is focused on advocacy, education and public awareness. Founded in 1979, they now have over 500 local affiliates that work in their communities to raise awareness. The intent of this blog will be to highlight the presence of depression in classrooms nationwide, but more specifically at Portland State University. The high stress and pressure created by educational institutions can negatively impact the mental health and well-being of the attending students. “..depression in college is not uncommon. In fact, there are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses every year, according to a study by Emory University. Additionally, the 2016 UCLA Higher Education Research Institute survey showed that 12 percent of college freshmen say that they are frequently depressed. Not only does school sometimes contribute to depression, but depression can also interfere with school.” (Newport Academy).

Aufnahmetechnik

Die Rohdaten dieser HDR-Aufnahmen wurden mit einer Canon EOS 500d und einem Tamron AF SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD im Makromodus, mittels Fernbedienung vom Stativ aufgenommen. Die Belichtungsreihen bestehen aus drei (-1,3 – 0 – 1,3 LV) bzw. fünf (-2,0 – -1,0 – 0 – 1,0 – 2,0) Einzelbildern.

Nachbearbeitung

Die Nachbearbeitung erfolgte mit ACDSee Pro 10, Ulead PhotoImpact X3 und paint.net, die Fusion bzw. das Tonemapping zu HDR mit PhotoMatix 3.2.2 64bit.
