An international team of scientists say efforts to protect the ozone layer have been a “huge global success,” with damaging atmospheric gases declining more quickly than expected.

According to the new study, the total amount of chlorine — which depletes the ozone — in all hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) peaked in 2021, five years earlier than the most recent predictions.

“This has been a huge global success. We’re seeing that things are going in the right direction,” said Dr. Luke Western, lead author of the study and a Marie Curie Research Fellow at University of Bristol’s School of Chemistry, as The Guardian reported.

The reduction in HCFCs is largely due to the 1987 Montreal Protocol, which introduced controls on the usage and production of ozone-depleting substances. HCFCs were once common in the manufacturing of hundreds of products, from refrigerators and packaging to aerosol sprays and foams.

Lowering the amount of HCFCs — which are also greenhouse gases — should help lessen global heating, a press release from University of Bristol said.

Developed to replace chlorofluorocarbons — banned globally since 2010 — production and usage of HCFCs is still in the process of being phased out.

“The results are very encouraging. They underscore the great importance of establishing and sticking to international protocols,” Western said in the press release. “Without the Montreal Protocol, this success would not have been possible, so it’s a resounding endorsement of multilateral commitments to combat stratospheric ozone depletion, with additional benefits in tackling human-induced climate change.”

HCFC emissions fell less than one percent between 2021 and 2023, but are still moving in the right direction.

“Their production is currently being phased out globally, with a completion date slated for 2040. In turn these HCFCs are being replaced by non-ozone depleting hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and other compounds. By enforcing strict controls and promoting the adoption of ozone-friendly alternatives, the protocol has successfully curbed the release and levels of HCFCs into the atmosphere,” Western said.

The Brazilian Navy sank in the late afternoon of Friday (3) the deactivated aircraft carrier São Paulo, which had been sailing for months in the sea after being banned from entering Brazil and abroad.

"The procedure was conducted with the necessary technical and safety competence by the Brazilian Navy, in order to avoid logistical, operational, environmental and economic losses to the Brazilian State," says the naval force, by means of a note (at the end of the news).

This Friday, the Federal Regional Court of the 5th Region (TRF-5) released the Navy to sink the aircraft carrier, rejecting a request from the Federal Public Prosecutor's Office (MPF), which saw serious environmental risk in the decision.

Three holes in the hull of the vessel caused the ship to fill with water, which made the sinking inevitable, according to an inspection carried out by the Brazilian Navy.

According to the document, if nothing was done, the aircraft carrier would sink uncontrollably until mid-February.

Risk of environmental damage

The Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) evaluated that the sinking of the ship can cause the following environmental damage:

The release of polluting materials contained in the structure can cause disturbance in filtering capacity and difficulty of growth in aquatic organisms;

The physical impact on the ocean floor can cause the death of species and the deterioration of ecosystems;

Emission of gases (CFCs and HCFCs) used in the insulation of rooms contribute, from the corrosion of the walls, to the degradation of the ozone layer;

The carcass can attract invasive species harmful to native biodiversity;

Microplastics and heavy metals present in vessel paints can become protagonists of undesirable bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms.

Because of this, Ibama asked the Navy for information to study alternatives to reduce environmental damage. The environmental agency also wanted to map the bottom area of the ocean where the ship would be sunk.

According to the MPF, the scrap of the vessel has 9.6 tons of asbestos, a substance that has toxic and carcinogenic potential. The hull also has 644 tons of paint and other hazardous materials.

The document also says that the area “was selected based on studies conducted by the Navy Hydrography Center and the Almirante Paulo Moreira Sea Studies Institute”.

"The analyses considered aspects related to navigation safety and the environment, with special attention to the mitigation of impacts on public health, fishing activities and ecosystems," says the Navy's text.

According to the Navy, this place was chosen for five reasons:

Location within the area of the Exclusive Economic Zone of Brazil;

Location outside Environmental Protection Areas;

Interference-free area with documented submarine cables;

Area without interference from water works projects (e.g. wind farms);

Area with depths greater than 3,000 meters.

Cao su non kháng âm, kháng nhiệt

Cao su non cách âm là một trong những vật liệu cách âm được sử dụng khá rộng rãi hiện nay. Nhờ giá thành rẻ, dễ thi công nên cao su non cách âm được khá nhiều người lựa chọn. Cao su non cách âm là sản phẩm cách âm không chứa các chất nguy hại sức khỏe như HCFC, CFC, ODP, được đánh giá cao về mức độ an toàn với sức khỏe người sử dụng và môi trường. Để tạo ra cao su non, phải trải qua một phản ứng hóa học giữa hợp chất có chứa Hydro với isocyanate. Cao su non cách âm là một trong những vật liệu cách âm được sử dụng khá rộng rãi hiện nay bởi giá thành rẻ, dễ thi công, dễ dàng vận chuyển.

Cao su non được sản xuất thông qua quy trình hiện đại với nguyên liệu đạt tiêu chuẩn chất lượng cao. Phân loại cao su non cách âm

Cao su non cách âm bao gồm 2 loại chính, với kích thước và tính năng khác nhau giúp khách hàng có thể dễ dàng tìm ra sản phẩm phù hợp nhất với công trình của mình.

Dạng cuộn: Là sản phẩm có kích thước dài, thông thường các cuộn dài từ 50 – 100 md, không bị đứt đoạn nên khả năng tiêu âm, chống ồn, chống rung rất tốt. Thường được sử dụng ở các công trình lớn như sàn phòng thu, vách, trần nhà hát, hội trường… Có nhiều độ dày tùy theo nhu cầu, mục đích sử dụng của khách mà lựa chọn cao su non dạng cuộn có độ dày phù hợp từ 2mm, 3mm – 4mm hoặc 5mm. Màu sắc của sản phẩm cũng khá đa dạng, gồm các màu như trắng, đen, xanh, hồng… Dạng tấm: Là sản phẩm có kích thước 1,3 x 2.4mm vẫn đảm bảo các tính năng ưu việc như cách âm, tiêu âm, chống ồn, chống thấm nước, chống thoát nhiệt… Thích hợp với các khách hàng có nhu cầu sử dụng tấm cách âm ở công trình nhỏ. Các độ dày phổ biến của sản phẩm này bao gồm cao su non 3mm, 5mm, 8mm, 10mm, 15mm và 20mm.

Ưu điểm của cao su non cách âm

Do cấu trúc phân tử của cao su non cách âm có đặc điểm là số lượng lớn các sợi nhỏ đan chéo lẫn nhau tạo ra các ô nhỏ li ti, do vậy tạo nên nhiều ưu điểm so với các sản phẩm cách âm, chống rung khác như: - Khả năng cách âm, chống rung tốt - Cao su non chống cháy, chống tĩnh điện - Có khả năng tiêu âm, giảm chấn cực tốt - Tính đàn hồi cao - Thân thiện với môi trường - Khả năng chống thấm nước, ăn mòn tốt - Tính bảo ôn cao - Dễ dàng thi công và lắp đặt.

Hướng dẫn thi công cao su non cách âm, cách nhiệt

Bước 1. Vệ sinh bề mặt sàn sau đó sử dụng con lăn thoa đều chất kết dính lên bề mặt sàn Bước 2. Sử dụng tấm cao su non đã được cắt sẵn phù hợp với diện tích sàn trải từ từ đều tay lên phần diện tích đã được trải chất kết dính sao cho bề mặt lớp cao su láng mịn trải đều lên sàn. Bước 3. Thoa đều chất kết dính lên bề mặt lớp cao su non vừa trải và đặt tấm sàn gỗ lên trên bề mặt đó đồng thời sử dụng các miếng đệm cao su đặt vào phần tiếp giáp giữa bức tường và phần cạnh của tấm gỗ. Bước 4. Rút các miếng đệm đã được đặt sau đó dùng ống phun chất kết dính đặc biệt hoàn thiện mối nối giữa các tấm gỗ với nhau và giữa cạnh tấm gỗ với chân vách tường.

Ứng dụng của cao su non cách âm

Sử dụng tốt cho các công trình đặc biệt cần xử lý âm thanh như rạp chiếu phim, nhà hát, quán bar, phòng thu âm hoặc dùng tại các vị trí như trần nhà, vách tường, sàn nhà…

Sử dụng kết hợp với các vật liệu khác như bông khoáng hoặc bông thủy tinh cho các công trình cần đến hiệu quả cách âm ở mức độ vừa đến cao.

Sử dụng để làm vách tiêu âm hoặc lớp chống ẩm cho phòng họp, hội trường, nhà hàng, phòng học tập,…

Sử dụng làm gioăng chống rung và giảm chấn trong nhiều lĩnh vực như xây dựng, sản xuất ô tô, bao bì, điện tử…
