Wood Engraving Wednesday
One of our absolute favorite British wood engravers is Gwenda Morgan (1908-1991). So this week we return to a few of her engravings in The Wood-Engravings of Gwenda Morgan, printed and published at John and Rosalind Randle’s Whittington Press in Gloucestershire, England in 1985 in an edition of 335 copies, signed by Gwenda Morgan. This book, with Morgan’s original wood engravings was printed directly from the blocks, was is set in 12-point Bell and printed on Zerkall mould-made papers.
One of the reasons we admire Morgan’s work so much is well-expressed by former Golden Cockerel Press proprietor Christopher Sandford, who once said, as John Randle points out in his introduction
. . . that her engravings reminded him of romantic scenes in needlework, embroidery and tapestry. There is a sense of order and formality in her work that does indeed bring such scenes to mind, and the apparent simplicity of her composition and technique disguises a sure eye and a firm hand with the engraving tool.
Randle continues with his own assessment:
The two wood-engravers whose work Gwenda Morgan most admires are Eric Ravilious and Douglas Percy Bliss, and like them she engraves with conviction and clarity. Her blocks are beautifully cleanly and deeply cut, the antithesis of the very fine line technique beloved of some engravers which can make the printer’s job such a difficult one. . . . This selection of Gwenda Morgan’s work is made up of her favourite blocks, and accounts for perhaps a quarter of her total output.
This book is another generous donation from our friend, Jerry Buff.
