What color is your shirt? The one I’m currently wearing has some white, red, and black on it.

What length is your hair? Too long than how I want it to be; I just haven’t had the time to have it trimmed + Covid’s bad again so I can’t even go out of the house anymore. Anyway it’s already down to my boobs but I really want to have it cut all the way up to my neck again.

Comedy: Not a big comedy buff but I do have a soft spot for White Chicks, hahaha. The jokes have so far never failed to make me laugh.

War: Gone With the Wind.

Horror: I’ll have to go with The Shining or the original Carrie for this. I can’t even tell you the last time I was able to watch The Shining all the way through; I always get disturbed enough to turn it off at a certain point. That alone makes it great for me.

Romance: If we’re talking full-on romance and not romcom, probably The Vow. That and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Rom-Com: The Proposal, Love Actually, Roman Holiday, Funny Face, and Two for the Road.

Animated: Toy Story.

Drama: Revolutionary Road, without a doubt. Room and The Reader are great as well.

Foreign: I mean...all English-language movies are foreign to me lmao so I guess I’ll go with my all-time favorite? Two for the Road.

Suspense: Eh, not really a fan. I guess I’ll go with Gone Girl.

Musical: Even more so not a fan, but I do love My Fair Lady. I remember being super excited to view La La Land thinking it would just have some songs squished in between scenes, so I was disappointed when the first scene was literally a song number.

Documentary: Jiro Dreams of Sushi was life-changing. I’m glad one of my home ec teachers introduced us to the full docu in one of our classes.

Sports: Not a fan.

Religious: The Exorcist, if we can stretch what ‘religious’ means hahahaha

Family: Let’s just go with Toy Story again.

Holiday: It’s A Wonderful Life, and Love Actually again!

Black and White: Not really a genre lol, but Roman Holiday.

How do you like your pizza? Very simple. The less toppings the better, 

Do you put parmesean cheese on pasta? If there’s some available, yeah.

What is your ideal salad? With chunks of tuna sashimi and spicy mayo.

Which is your favorite kind of macaroni & cheese? Isn’t macaroni and cheese just...that? Hahaha I’m not aware of any other kinds of it; I don’t get to have mac and cheese a lot.

Which juice is your favorite? I find some of the more exotic ones actually taste nice and don’t taste too overpowering, like guyabano.

What do you dip your french fries in? Mayonnaise, or any kind of sauce that has mayo mixed in it.

Which is your favorite kind of pie? I usually gravitate towards savory ones; doesn’t matter what kind.

Milk chocolate, dark chocolate or white chocolate? Milk > white > dark.

How do you take your coffee? Creamy and milky.

Crab legs, shrimp, or lobster tail? Crab or lobster. Not the biggest fan of shrimp and I’d honestly pass on it if I could, but if it were the only seafood being served I wouldn’t mind getting one or two. But generally, the flavor doesn’t do much for me and I hate that they’re usually too small hahaha.

Steak medium rare or well done? Ultra rare.

If you said well done you can see yourself out. Lmao damn, I love steak but I’m not a gatekeeper...

Do you grow any of your own food? No, never really tried doing so.

If you do, which is your favorite to eat?

Name 4 foreign dishes you want to try. Can’t really name exact names of dishes off the top of my head, but some cuisines I have yet to try and would love to are African (in general), Brazilian, Sri Lankan, and Swedish.

Do you like guacamole? It’s fine. Not super common here, and I wouldn’t seek it out even if I were despeately hungry.

What is your go to snack? Corndogs or spicy tuna salad.

Do you prefer mustard or cheese on a soft pretzel? Cheese. Hate mustard.

Do you like oysters? Looooooooove them, but they’re kinda expensive so I don’t get to have them a lot. I usually settle for mussels.

How do you eat them? I’m down for any kind of oyster dish.

Favorite alcoholic beverage, if you're of age? Long Island Iced Tea or some kind of fruity, sweet cocktail.

Anime NYC 2021, Day One

So first of all, in regards to what everyone’s talking about, I can’t speak for the line problem. I arrived at 10am via the press entrance with no issues, but I talked with other press folks who arrived later who were in line forever. So I’ll let them go into details. My own start of the con was relatively sedate. At 10am the place was almost deserted. I found out why later. Plus my first panel wasn’t till 3:15. So I leisurely sat, read manga, read books, ate lunch, and visited a show floor that was absent a lot of the usual suspects. Viz is entirely absent this year. Kodansha has a panel and an Attack on Titan art exhibit, but no booth. The manga contingent consisted of Yen press, J-Novel Club, and Denpa Books.

Speaking of Denpa, they had my fist panel. First of all, the biggest news: Ed Chavez was audible through the entire panel. Anyone who has seen Ed’s prior panels knows what a big deal this is. As for the panel itself, a lot of it was titles that Denpa has already discussed, either in previous con announcements or in tweets. The combination of COVID-19 delays and printing issues owing to the sudden explosion of manga popularity means that getting books to the printers takes forever. A few of the slides Ed had gave Summer 2021 release dates, which isn’t true. That said, he has had a lot of new titles go to the printers recently, so 2022 looks far more promising on the Denpa front.

A big surprise to me, and showing that my own tastes do not necessarily match that of the average manga buyer, was hearing what Denpa’s big sellers were. For all that folks mocked Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji’s delays of Vols. 1-3, now that they’re out they’re selling very well. Also selling well is Pleasure and Corruption, the high school bondage and discipline manga. The Girl with the Sanpaku Eyes also has its 3rd volume out soon, and is also selling well. There were also two special editions of Shūzō Oshimi titles at Denpa’s exhibitor table – they have a very good working relationship with the author.

“Old” new announcements included Baby Bear’s Bakery, an adorable-looking series about, well, a baby bear running a bakery. March 2022 for that. The Man Who Created Gundam, a nonfiction-ish manga with real people in it, is trapped in clearance hell at Sunrise. Hopefully soon. Guyabano Holiday should now be Fall 2022, and we also saw updates on yuri vampire series Vampeerz and comedic action series Under Ninja. We then got “new” announcements, though we knew most of these from tweets the last few months. They Were 11, which will have an oversize trim, posters, and color pages, and will also feature the “extra” chapters never published in English before. They’re looking at Winter 2022. Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack: Beltorchika’s Children has Char abandoning Gundams for the life of a Broadway stage actor. Possibly.

March Comes in Like a Lion got a big reaction from the audience, though Ed is worried about the title. The author has had failures here before, and the shogi essays make it hard to find a translator. Renjoh Desperado is a comedy action manga about a woman searching for love and her fanservice to the manga reader that will hopefully help that search go well. And we heard about two new artbooks. Black Tights WIDE has 48 different illustrators give their interpretation of thighs and stockings. And The Art of Jun – TabeGirl is about girls eating. And looking good while doing it.

Ed then talked about Denpa’s books on the KUMA boy’s love label. They have not released much on that label yet, but that will change next year, they plan to do a lot more. You Are My Happiness is out soon (it was at Denpa’s table) and is by the author of Melting Lover, also from KUMA. Boys of the Dead is (groan) “Zom-BL”. The Song of Yoru & Asa is a band BL series that’s edgy but also has great character development. Sick is a series about a college student who likes to bully… erm, tease the boy he likes. And Canis – Dear Hatter is a sequel to the Canis title KUMA did earlier.

Lastly, they had a license from the FAKKU imprint that definitely surprised me, as I recall when it was coming out ages ago. Nana & Kaoru ran in Hakusensha’s Young Animal, and typified the magazine in many ways. A series about a virgin with an S&M fetish and the twisted relationship he has with the girl who discovers this, it’s a great example of a title that is almost explicitly porn without actually being porn. It’s 18 volumes long, and will be released in 3-volume omnibuses. Eds Q&A included a more extensive discussion of the supply chain issues going on right now, what made them decide to license a title like Kaiji, how how they look at licenses in general – per Ed, do not expect an isekai from them ever.

After this I bummed around and got more tea till it was time for my next panel, Inside the Manga Industry. This featured five experts in the field: Mark De Vera, sales & marketing with Yen Press (and formerly Viz Media); Jani Olove, translator and editor with Kodansha; Julian Robinson, designer with Viz Media; Nikolas Draper-Ivey, artist on DC Comics’ Static and heavily manga-influenced; and independent artist Koyuki Panda, also heavily anime and manga influenced. They introduced themselves and then noted most of the panel would be a Q&A; audience asks questions, they give advice. Things got off to a bang up start with the first question, which was “what advice would you give your younger self”?

More than one person said “don’t go to art school”, which ended up occupying a lot of the panel as it turns out that several folks in the room are art school students. It was generally agreed that if you need to learn the fundamentals of the craft, it’s a good place to be, but in general a lot of the art schools tend to frown on heading in a manga/anime direction and they also don’t focus nearly as much on the business end of things as they should. This led to the other running theme of the panel, which was learning about business and knowing how contracts worked. Everyone recommended supplementing art school with business classes. Everyone also agreed another good piece of advice is “don’t give up”.

Marketing your work was discussed, and it was mentioned that even established companies can have difficulty using marketing as a tool. Trust in your own likes, and (admittedly) it helps to like things that are not just Shonen Jump – even if Koyuki Panda admitted that she was a huge fan of “the big three” back in the day. It’s mentioned that things are very different now than they were 10 years ago – there’s a lot more breadth to what’s coming out in manga publishing. In fact, when a trans woman asked if there were specific titles available, the panel was able to easily recommend Boys Run the Riot, an excellent choice. Hopefully the boom market will also mean more opportunity for manga-influenced artists in the future – publishers like Oni, Image and Viz were mentioned as being open to this sort of thing, and a non-Japanese title, Radiant, was namechecked.

The panel ended with the wonderful news that they would meet up at Koyuki Panda’s booth in Artist’s Alley and answer the questions from the people they didn’t have time to get to, which was great to hear, and the panel was interesting and inspiring all round. This ended my Friday, as I grabbed dinner and returned to the hotel. Tomorrow will be much busier, and hopefully will have less line.

Do you post to say happy birthday on other people’s walls? I do this with people I’m not close with but whose birthday I’d still like to acknowledge. I send personal messages to family and friends.

Have there ever been floods where you live? My country is prone to floods in general, but my parents took this into consideration when they were figuring out where we should settle so our current house doesn’t get to experience floods a lot, if at all. We only got flooded once, back in 2009.

Do you listen to K-Pop? Yesss. I experimented with a few groups in the past and watched their music videos and variety show appearances like Twice, SHINee, VIXX, EXO, Blackpink, and GOT7, etc...but I ended up getting attached to BTS the most.

When was the last time you saw a rainbow? I have no idea.

How many students are/were at the high school you attended? It ranged from 160-200 students per batch, so somewhere around 650-800. Not a big school; many other private schools had 800 students per level alone.

Are you hot, cold or somewhere in the middle right now? I’m in the middle and I’m happy about it. Summer season is finally over – and I thank my work for making me barely realize that it’s passed through – and we’ve moved on to the rainy season so I’ve felt the weather change as well.

Would you rather be alone or in the company of other people? Right now I wish I had company so I’m really glad Angela and Hans will be coming over tonight. Andi will have their birthday in a few weeks too and I already received an invite, so yay.

What’s your favorite television commercial? I don’t really have one.

Do you wish on shooting stars? If I saw one I would, but I haven’t.

Have you ever tried writing a song? I probably tried when I was younger, but quickly realized I couldn’t.

What is your favorite type of juice? More tropical ones like guava or guyabano.

Whose birthday did you last celebrate? My cousin’s, though we didn’t get to gather as a family because it took place on a weekday and it had been a very busy week in general.

When you were a kid, did you have a treehouse? No. We didn’t have a tree big enough to have one built, but then again I’m pretty sure treehouses are more of a Western thing anyway.

What was the best school year in your opinion? I had a lot of fun in junior year. That’s when it started to feel like the high school experience I’d usually only see in movies, like going to the mall on weekends with friends and getting invited to soirees and getting into my first relationship. It was a pleasant experience overall.

Do you know (of) anyone who has committed suicide? Yes.

When was the last time you flew on a plane? March 2019, if I’m not mistaken.

Do you eat meat every day? Probably not literally everyday but it’s a part of my daily diet in general.

Who taught you how to ride a bike? They both attempted to teach me but it’s not like I ever learned hahaha lol I still can’t ride a bike.

Are you a fan of Lana Del Rey? No, I never understood the hype at all. < Yeah, me too. I’ve tried listening but I guess her sound just isn’t for me.

How do you cook your rice? Steam, boil, other? Steam.

Do you like your country’s president or prime minister? No, I never liked any of the recent ones.

Do you wear skirts? Nope, not part of my personal style. I feel so exposed with skirts :/

What color is your house? Beige.

How many first cousins do you have? 11. I had 12 but one passed away, but I still count her.

Have you ever seen a pop star in concert? I saw five of them when I saw One Direction six years ago.

Margarine or butter? Hehehehehehe. Butter.

Do you listen to Christmas music during the holiday season? Yeah, I’m usually the one in the family who starts putting it on so everyone can start getting in a festive mood.

Where would you like to vacation to? Northern Europe.

What time do you set your alarm to? I don’t; I’m usually able to wake up naturally. If I feel like I might sleep in, I would set my alarm to either 6:30 or 7:30 AM.

What’s the longest period of time you’ve gone without sleep? Probably a little over 24 hours.

What time does the sun set at the time of year where you live? 5 or 6 PM, depending on the time of year.

Have you ever been skiing? Well I’ve never seen snow, so no.

Can you imitate any accents really well? Just certain Korean words and phrases. I can also generally mimic the American accent I’d usually hear from people.

Do you save the birthday/Christmas cards you receive? I don’t really get those, so no. I keep letters and tiny notes I receive from friends, though.

When was the last time you moved house? 13 years ago.

What color is your can of deodorant? White and mint green.

Have you ever had a secret admirer? If I did I never knew about it.

What did you last feel nervous about? I had to work yesterday and my director and manager left me be cos they had errands to run, so it was up to me to make sure my deliverables went smoothly.

What is the middle name of the last person you texted? I have no clue.

How far do you live from the ocean? Pretty far.

Are you a fan of Eminem? Not really, but I don’t dislike him. He just would never really be my first choice if I wanted to listen to music.

What time do you usually go to bed? Anywhere between midnight to 4 AM.
