larp character costume test in advance of saturday
welcome to 1950s washington DC! my assigned character, ira soulsby, is the most junior special investigations air force officer assigned to the mysterious ufo-tracking project signal. he is about to be embroiled in paranormal events and, quite possibly, inexplicable phenomena.
don't worry about what happened to the last guy who had his job.

A SICKNESS
Clearly, filmmaker Guy Soulsby is a talented filmmaker. With only two actors and one location, Soulsby creates professional quality and beautiful images that build suspense and anxiety as the story moves along. This short feels like you’re watching the opening scene of a feature and that’s why it succeeds. A proof-of-concept that sells you on the premise and filmmaker behind the lens, so what most studio execs are in search of.

GOD’S KINGDOM | Short Film
Jack and Ella travel alone, taking the path less trodden. Dishevelled and dirty they keep away from people, towns and cities, off the grid. They are hiding and on the run, but from what and why?

Gods Kingdom - Credit Sequence from PUSH VFX on Vimeo.
It was an incredible privilege for us to work with director Guy Soulsby in this end credits scene for his feature GODS KINGDOM. Our main job was to work on top of the concept of Rich Hallsworth, and bring it to life through mood and atmosphere according to the directors vision. For this job we used Houdini, because it was the best tool to deploy the layout, work on lighting and shading with very quick iterations, also to perform some simulation work, all in one package. Rendering was done with Redshift, because of it's incredible speed and easy shader building, as most of the shaders used are procedural. And finally the compositing work was done in Nuke, and most of the mood was built using it. All the embers and smoke were added making use of Nuke's powerful 3D tools and environment, so we could place the smoke and embers cards in 3D space, allowing us to iterate faster to the directors input.

JUNKYARD DEMENTO’S 2016 TOP 10 SHORTS
A little late with my Top 10 list but here it is! Looking back at all of the films I posted and wrote about in 2016, here are the best of the best!
These films stood out for their amazing stories, cinematography, visual effects and just for being able to create a top notch film in a tight, short format. As bad as the theatrical offerings are or the crap you find on streaming services, the short film platform is keeping genre going - whether it’s horror or science fiction - strong and overflowing with creativity.
Below are the Top 10 picks. My picks came from the films featured on the site and that either were released online or debuted in 2016. A big thanks to the filmmakers and their crews for creating memorable stories and visually stunning worlds. Looking forward to see what 2017 has in store for us!
ENJOY!
Picks are in private

The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara
Did not finish:
Woven (Salome Mulugeta and Nagwa Ibrahim, 2016)
Isn’t It Romantic (Todd Strauss-Schulson, 2019)
Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Doug Liman, 2005)
Did not like and/or don’t even remember that well:
One (Luke Bradford, 2019)
Frigid (Joe Kicak, 2016)
Easy A (Will Gluck, 2010)
Good films:
Dirty John: The Dirty Truth (Sara Mast, 2019)
God's Kingdom (Guy Soulsby, 2018)
Donoma (Evan Spencer Brace, 2018)
The Sermon (Dean Puckett, 2018)
Layer Cake (Matthew Vaughn, 2004): Should definitely watch more British gangster films, although this one was a bit too formulaic, also too intricate for my very small brain
The Rachel Divide (Laura Brownson, 2018)
The Place Beyond the Pines (Derek Cianfrance, 2012): I’ve been curious about this ever since it came out because Blue Valentine remains one of my favourite films to this day, but I was a little disappointed, although I absolutely loved what the film did with Ryan Gosling’s character
Burden (Timothy Marrinan and Richard Dewey, 2016)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Steven Spielberg, 1977): This confirms everything I already knew about Spielberg: he makes flawless films that are boring as fuck
Great shorts:
Blackwood (Andrew Montague, 2019): Except for the (regrettable) last few frames, this short is a fantastic example of what horrors can be achieved by sticking to a simple show-not-tell formula. Also a short film that really, fully explores its medium...
Girl of the Sky (Ariel Martin, 2017): ... as does this one. And it’s beautiful and funny
Monitor (Matt Black and Ryan Polly, 2018): Solid horror
Animal (Fabrice Le Nézet and Jules Janaud, 2017): Science fiction I wish there were more of
Super interesting documentaries:
Three Identical Strangers (Tim Wardle, 2018)
Generation Wealth (Lauren Greenfield, 2018): Maaan I still think about some of the people in this documentary... like that woman whose daughter killed herself, or that retired porn performer who caught salmonella from a scene
Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (Kurt Kuenne, 2008): Please just go into this knowing nothing about what happens in it
Capturing the Friedmans (Andrew Karecki, 2003): Finally saw this... not gonna lie, I was a bit disappointed in the end, but only because it’s been on my watchlist for like ten years
The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (Errol Morris, 2003): So, I watched this because it’s Errol Morris. I feel like this documentary was trying to say “McNamara was actually a very competent man at his job, and if you want to go to war you’re going to need men like him (so, you know, don’t),” which I really didn’t need any convincing about, but it’s Errol Morris, so, splendid soundtrack, campy visuals, masterful editing
Favourites of the month:
Holiday (Isabella Eklöf, 2018): I went into this knowing nothing about it. It’s a bit like the Danish, woman-led Sexy Beast, which is a compliment indeed -- although starker, less humourous
Perfect Blue (パーフェクトブル, Pāfekuto Burū, Satoshi Kon, 1997): Also finally saw this one. It reminded me more of Shane Carruth than it did of David Lynch -- another compliment in my book -- and I liked it much more than I did Paprika
What Will People Say (Hva vil folk si, Iram Haq, 2017): Definitely this month’s film that fucked me up. The story of a Norwegian girl of Pakistani descent who gets sent “back” to Pakistan by her parents after they find her with a boy in her bedroom
Kissing Candice (Aoife McArdle, 2017): I described this as The Party’s Just Beginning meets Mandy meets Snowtown, and I know I should stop talking in references, but really I don’t know how else to put my feelings into words so there you go. Also it’s a small Irish film that might not be very original, maybe, but I didn’t care because it had this magical realism that I love
Also I did get Amazon Prime this month, and as a result I’ve been binge-watching the whole six seasons of Community, which means I didn’t get a lot of film-watching done, but let’s be honest, Community is pretty amazing. I’ll probably finish it in April, so.
