How amazing is this? It looks like a greenhouse. 

What amazing vision. And, as much as I’d love a pink Smeg fridge, I wouldn’t think of putting that particular color in this kitchen.

The bath is upstairs. 

Next to the bathroom is a small sleeping nook. What a fantastic loft.

Palm Springs Film Festival: Steven Spielberg's 'The Post' to Screen on Opening Night

Steven Spielberg’s The Publish, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, will display screen Jan. four because the opening-night movie on the 29th Palm Springs Worldwide Movie Competition. San Sebastian Unveils First Competition Titles, Will Screen Pablo Escobar Film With Javier Bardem

The first two episodes of ‘La Peste’ (‘The Plague’) will screen, marking the first time the festival’s official selection will include a TV series.

The San Sebastian Film Festival on Friday unveiled the first competition titles for its 65th edition.

The festival, which runs Sept. 22-Sept. 30, will in its competition program premiere Life and Nothing More, the second film by Antonio Mendez Esparza, Handia, the latest film from Jon Garano and Aitor Arregi, as well as El Autor, by Manuel Martin Cuenca. The competition winner is honored with the Golden Shell award.

Loving Pablo, by Fernando Leon de Aranoa and starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, will be the closing-night film of the Pearls section and screen out-of-competition. The film tells “the true story of the notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar, who killed thousands, made billions and struck up an unlikely love affair with his polar opposite, a glamorous television host named Virginia Vallejo.”

The the out-of-competition screenings unveiled Friday are Marrowbone, the directorial debut of screenwriter Sergio Sanchez, and the first two episodes of Spanish TV series La Peste (The Plague), directed by Alberto Rodriguez. This marks the first time the San Sebastian festival’s official selection will include a TV series.

Special screenings announced include Morir (Dying), the second film by Fernando Franco, and La Cordillera (The Summit) from Santiago Mitre.

There is a huge difference between a home movie and a documentary. Lots of people film their families – however it is rare that anyone outside of that family would really care to see that film.

That knowledge is certainly not lost on Julita Salmerón, the subject of this film. Early on and often here she advises her son – Spanish actor Gustavo Salmerón, who has created this film from hundreds of hours of footage shot over about a decade – that no one who doesn’t know her will be interested in seeing a film about her.

Thankfully, Gustavo recognized that his mother was wrong. Julita is a true character; smart, funny, eccentric, more than a little strange, an avid hoarder, but also a vibrant life force and a natural film presence. When she is on the screen, you can’t look at anyone else.

The slightly oddball title is a listing of Julita’s fondest wishes as a little girl. She wanted to have lots of kids, a pet monkey, and to live in a castle. Of course, everyone has big dreams as a kid, but Julita (her given first name was Julia, but she changed it as a young woman because she wanted to stand out) actually achieved all of her goals.

All of them are present and accounted for in this film: Julita’s large extended family, the cluttered castle that she and her husband worked so hard to buy from a relatively modest background, and even the monkey – though the monkey, who presumably died years ago, is relegated to a few short appearances in old photos, or archival home footage.

The spine of the story – literally – is the somewhat odd look through the thousands of boxes in Julita’s castle to find a couple of pieces of vertebrae from the skeleton of her long-dead grandmother. The relative was murdered during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s and the corpse was left on the shore to rot as a warning.

For some reason that even she can’t quite explain, Julita decided to keep the bones as a memorial to her murdered ancestor, but somewhere along the line the body parts got swallowed up by all of the clutter in the home. Julita’s children, particularly Gustavo, become a little bit obsessive about finding the bones and giving them a proper burial.

This – and a financial setback that forces Julita and her husband to sell the castle – leads to the entire family plunging into all the mess of boxes and drawers to look and prune through decades worth of old things. The family tries to get rid of lots of things, each of which Julita generally fights or frets over.

However, there is a lot more to this than just an extended Spanish episode of Hoarders.

No, Lots of Kids, A Monkey and a Castle is more intrigued in exploring the family dynamic, and particularly the life and intriguing worldview of this offbeat woman. We see her life played out in pictures and home movies, hear her passions and trivialities shared with equal conviction. Then as she ages and becomes infirm, it causes her to look inside and try to share her philosophy of life, even though she knows it is as unique as she is.

It makes a personal connection. Julita reminded me a lot of my similarly larger-than-life late grandmother, and I have no doubt that most people have someone similarly dramatic who has been important in their lives.

Julita was an imperfect woman, but she tried her best. In the end, her son Gustavo disproved her own presumption. Even though we don’t personally know her, this film about her life is endlessly fascinating.

Empate técnico entre “La Librería” y “El autor” en la 23ª edición de los Premios Forqué

Ambos films se llevaron el premio a mejor película en la gala que se celebró ayer por la noche en el Palacio de Congresos de Zaragoza

  El Palacio de Congresos de Zaragoza acogió anoche la edición número 23 de los Premios José María Forqué de cine. Una edición que ha contado con una gran presencia femenina, pues han sido 6 las nominadas a mejor actriz, frente a los 5 hombre nominados en la misma categoría.

La gala contó con las actuaciones de Sergio Dalma, Pastora Soler, Edu Soto y los ex-concursantes de la última edición de Operación Triunfo, en una noche dirigida por Boris Izaguirre y Elena Sánchez.

En cuanto a los premios, el mejor largometraje documental se lo llevó Muchos Hijos, un mono y un castillo, de Gustavo Salmerón, mientras que el de mejor corto fue para Madre, de Rodrigo Sorogoyen.

En las categorías interpretativas, Javier Gutiérrez recogió el premio como mejor actor por El Autor y en la categoría femenina, el galardón fue para Nathalie Poza  por No sé decir adiós.

Una mujer fantástica consiguió el Forqué a mejor película latinoamericana y Lo que de verdad importa se llevó el reconocimiento al cine y la educación en valores.

Un hecho destacado de la última edición de estos premios ha estado el empate técnico en la categoría de Mejor Largometraje. La Librería, dirigida por Isabel Coixet, y El Autor, de Manuel Martín comparten galardón al obtener el mismo número de votos. El empate técnico es la primera vez que sucede en la historia de los Premios Forqué, y desde luego fue la gran sorpresa de la noche.

Finalmente, la gala también tuvo momento de homenaje para Carlos Saura, que ha recogido la Medalla de Oro de EGEDA por toda su trayectoria.
