Hii!! Just wanted to let you know I very much appreciate your posts about bengali culture and mythology :)
Btw, what other bengali books do you read? I'm big fan of Sukumar Ray (the whole Ray family honestly>>), i also love feluda among other things. I'd love to discuss bengali literature with you <3
First of all thank you so muchh :D
I have always been a fan of literature and mythology so I try to dig up as much as I can hehe
I have read some Chhoto Golpo by Rabindranath Thakur, he's my absolute favourite, my Gurudev. I have the Golpo Guchho, though I haven't complete read all of them till now, I plan to do very soon. Poems I've read a lot I guess I forgot, I know the story of Chokher Bali through movies and stuff, mom won't buy me that now cause I am too young for that she says. I LOVE LOVE LOVE rabindrasangeet trust me.
I have the Raj Kahini by Abanindranath Thakur in my to read list actually, I will read that once I complete the novel series I am reading currently. Cannot forget Khirer Putul, it was actually what my school did in my class 6th fest that was too memorable for me...
Other than that and Abol Tabol – I LITERALLY HAD ALL THE POEMS MEMORIZED AS A TODDLER – till now my bengali literature reach is not very much actually sadly... Though I do keep all my old school books and they have some great poems and stories in them.
But to ACTUALLY read, sadly I would have to get more books, which I plan to do very soon..
I have read the Chander Pahar by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (the movie was bad but I did enjoy it as a child) and Aranyak I've only read a bit, it was in my school textbook I loved that and will read the entire thing oneday. but Pather Panchali I've read a bit, in a book called Aam Aatir Bhepu, – it was it also in my school syllabus – though I'd love to read someday, I have watched the movies OFCOURSE.
I have read some of Upendra Kishore Ray Choudhary too, like Banor Rajputro or Tuntunir Golpo. I read his Cheleder Ramayan too (that was the first ever Ramayan I ever read). Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen, I've only watched the movies.
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON PANDOB GOYENDA. MY GOD I LOVE THAT SO MUCH. Bilu was my first ever crush ngl lol.. I still love him.
But sadly I haven't read any of them, including Feluda and Byomkesh Bakshi. My knowledge in them only goes till the movies and shows. I watched those ssoftoons animation Pandob Goyenda and Gopal Bhar – ANOTHER THING I ABSOLUTELY ADORE – I still have those DVDS but I broke my laptop (don't ask me but it was funny T_T) so I have to wait now till I can watch them again.
And other than that, I am an ABSOLUTE SUCKER for Thakumar Jhuli, like I love them so much. I can talk about them for hours.
I would love it, if you have some good suggestions for what I should read.
And I would love it even more to be able to talk to someone about Bengali literature and stuff.. even mythology because I am a sucker for that too lol..

I was spellbound the first time I saw Shonar Kella at the age of 7. I remember my father had bought an array of DVDs featuring 6 of the best Ray's movies for children. Today on his 99th birthday, I would definitely like to pen down some words..
Its a very common thing in a bengali household like mine ... to grow up seeing Satyajit Ray's films and listening to Tagore's songs from an early childhood. Nothing new in that.. But still, when I come to think about it, both of them did have a huge impact on my life!
The former, Mr.Ray , no matter what he did ( his scripts, the books he have written, his illustrations, his paintings, his songs, his directions, the extraordinary films, even the dance of a band of ghosts in Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen).. every single work by him were actually pure gold.. truly a genius... all of his work had one thing in common... It was the lingering feeling you had when the book or the film finished... like an inner turmoil inside you.. always instigating to think more about what just happened.. like revisiting the concept once again but not in the big screen, but in your mind, all the images infront of your eyes flashing one by one... trying to reconnect.. to reflect!!! That was the beauty... the feeling...
Would like to mention a particular favourite film of mine, Mahanagar, where beautiful illustrations have been made of a woman thoroughly trying to enjoy both her work life and her family life to the best inspite of the hard cruelties life throws at her! Every single time.. I have been touched! And what powerful expressions by the actress herself.. one of Ray's best films I feel!

Feast Like Satyajit Ray, The King Of Bengali Cinema: A film director, a fiction writer, an illustrator, a graphic designer, a publisher, a calligrapher and a film critic are just a few things to mention about the genius #satyajitray . Anup Ghoshal, the popular singer in an interview about the auteur once had revealed Ray’s love for #luchi #arhardal and #begunbhaja .He also mentioned about his preference of #mutton over #chicken . He says that Satyajit Ray loved to eat #muri mixed with #ghee and #sugar . Quite conscious about his daily eating habits, his regular food in the studio was usually #chickensandwich and #curd . Remember the song Bhooter Raja Dilo Bor from Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen? It never fails to evoke memories of all the delectable #delicacies one would love to gorge on. But have you ever stopped to wonder what Manik Da’s pet dishes were? If you can’t take the suspense anymore, we’re happy to report that Manik Da loved all the stuff Bengalis dream of all the time. The thali comes with Loochi, Begun Bhaja, #pulao Rajnandini, #mocharghonto Dal Raibahadur and Bhaja Moslar #aloodum . Of course, there’s more - #chingrimalaicurry , IIish Bhaapa Bhetki #kalia and #kosha Mangsho. With Kancha Aam-Er #chutney and Bhaja #papad on the side, and #misti Doi and #sandesh to round off this culinary pilgrimage, you’re sure to remember the legend even more fondly for years to come. . . #bengalifood #foodblogging #kolkatafood #kolkatafoodbloggers #kolkatafoodie #calcuttacacophony #thekolkatabuzz #bangali https://www.instagram.com/p/B2OI4SeFJlw/?igshid=88vzsf0kfw05

Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen fULL MOVIE 'ENGLISH SUBTITLES'
Three takeaways from the film:
1) The ruler is never responsible.
2) The ruler is always misled.
3) The status quo can only be changed by magical methods, not by means of a rational course of action.
WHERE THE BUCK NEVER STOPS

Gupi Gayen Bagha Bayen (1969) dir Satyajit Ray (x)
The story follows the lives of Gupi and Bagha, which change drastically when they meet the King of all Ghosts. This song sequence especially was a commentary on the British colonisation of the Bengal regions (now Bangladesh and India), where the farmers fought relentlessly to seek independence and drove out the invading colonials.

Actually if I am going to bless the Hirak Rajar Deshe tag with content, might as well do it properly because this is brilliant media and I. think about it a lot. The political themes are just so real and so relevant now more than ever? And it just proves fascists all work the same way.
When they brainwash the workers, convince them that "hiraker raja bhogoban"? They're feeding them propaganda. The fascist king preys on the vulnerable masses to gain their support. You know, like in real life. The tragic thing is that at least the people in the movie have to be forcibly brainwashed. So many people irl get brainwashed without protesting or even realising.
Also the movie perfectly sums up why fascists are terrified of education. "Era joto beshi pore, toto besi jane, toto kom mane". Educated people who know their rights can speak out against injustice and they can't have that. So they literally shut down schools. I think I talked about the parallels to order of the phoenix before. But that doesn't stop the students because they are the future and they are hope and education can't be stopped by force and so the students fight back. That's so real, the examples are everywhere, CAA protests to BLM.
And how they hide poor people when outsiders arrive to creat a perfect image. Literal propaganda. The time the state government renovated everything around the stadium to show off for the foreigners during the under 17 football World Cup in 2017 comes to mind, as an example of the government caring more about its image than the people. (There are better and more recent examples, this is just a super literal one.)
(And of course the damn statue. Narendra Modi stadium anyone?)
Honestly this is just what I retain from memory, it has so much absolutely delicious political subtext and it's really amazing but probably not surprising that it still holds up so well. This movie is the real heere and I love
