Reading With the Old Breed thoughts Part 7:

Gunny! So I legit thought upon watching the show that they had kinda exaggerated this guy- upon reading Sledge's book, they apparently did not. The portrayal was apparently quite accurate- only Sledge never mentions Haney visibly breaking down on Pelelui, but the dude is pretty intense. Sledge talks about him being very concerned with cleaning his balls, cleaning his rifle a bit compulsively, and practicing bayoneting over and over again on the troop ship- yet quote, "not a man born of woman, but that God had issued him to the Marine Corps". amazing description honestly, and apparently Haney was super helpful to all in battle- completely chews out a young officer for practicing poor gun safety on a range and throws gravel at him, which fair. Sledge thought he served in WW1 and whiile Haney did enlist in 1918, he just missed it.

STILL our dear man, Elmo M. Haney did get a silver star on Cape Gloucester which is pretty neat. After Pelelui, Sledge is super interested in talking to Haney- who he thought had been in WW1 and in a sentiment I can probably relate to, saw it as an opportunity to get a really interesting comparison on how bad this campaign was compared to the horror of the trenches. And Haney's just like, this was really sucked. I'm done. Going back stateside. And Sledge is like, damn. Haney says it's bad, that was REALLY BAD. Course he didn't know Haney wasn't in ww1 combat, but still it's interesting.

Also according to Sledge, Haney was ripped. He was like in his forties at the time which is really impressive since all the guys in their early twenties are like, dude, this place is very, very hard on your body- and Haney over here being old enough to be their dad. Yeah dude, go take your stateside position, that's completely fair.
