An artist arrives full circle in his new ‘old hometown’ of Sebastopol
100 artists were selected to be part of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts summer exhibit of “Black White and Shades of Gray” which began on June 19. Among those selected is local artist Sig Rundstrom.
Tumblr media
Composing art with a very limited palate is a challenge. Yet for Rundstrom, known as ‘Sig’ to friends and collegues this challenge is welcome. He embraces a challenge like this due to the fact that he is accustomed to working with landscapes in abstracts and with textures like ‘sgraffito’ or ‘scratched’ technique.
“This is only the second time I had submitted artwork to Sebastopol Center for the Arts,” he said. Being accepted by the SCA is a delight because as Sig explained. “My wife Charlene and I moved to Sebastopol in 1973 after I got a degree and Secondary teaching certificate from San Jose State University. I interviewed for a teaching job in Forestville. While I did not get the teaching position, we had fallen in love with Wine Country.
“Working in black & white requires a subtler transition between light and dark areas,” says Steve Pill, editor of Artists & Illustrators magazine. The ability to adjust tone and develop subtlety with a greater sense of control, these he points out are some of the skills an artist can gain from working strictly in black and white. Believe it or not notes Pill, “Subtle differences that can easily be lost when working in full color.”
Sig enjoys working on landscapes especially with scale and depth. Having this work accepted amid so many submissions seems like coming around full circle. Sebastopol is where he began his life in Wine Country so being exhibited in Sebastopol is very special to him.
“After 20 years, we moved from Sebastopol to the town of Sonoma in 1997, Sig said. I was working in Walnut Creek back then and the move was to cut my commute. We have been in Sonoma ever since.”
This admission into the exhibit at SCA comes at a very special time. “I was also just recently accepted into the Arts Guild of Sonoma,” said Sig. He attributes all of this to the tremendous out pouring of work he has done since the onset of COVID-19, thanks in part to ‘Mr. Mojo’ as he calls it. “Mr. Mojo is that burst of creative energy and drive that puts you into ‘the zone’ I don’t know how else to describe it,” said Sig. “The past two years have been amazing.”
Speaking about the work entitled “Owl Cove, Bundshchu Gundlach Winery” Sig said. “It was submitted by chance when I received an email about a black and white exhibit at Sebastopol Center for the Arts. I had just gone to Bundschu Gundlach Winery and was all excited about doing a painting of the beautiful setting.”
Nestled in Sonoma going towards Napa along Denmark Street Bundschu Gundlach is California's oldest continuously family-owned winery, and is the third oldest winery after Buena Vista Winery. It is still owned and operated by the founder's heirs and today led by the sixth generation, Jeff Bundschu.
The 12 x 16 ‘Sgraffito’ piece on panel is on display and for sale at the gallery.
Tumblr media
Having painted so many things during COVID, to be able to exhibit something so remiscent of Wine Country like a view of vineyards is certainly a high point in his career as an artist.
‘Black White and Shades of Gray’ exhibit is on display at Sebastopol Center of the Arts until July 25. Located at 282 South High Street in Sebastopol, the gallery is open to the public Thursday through Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM. For more information visit the SCA web site.

Birmingham, AL -- Waxahatchee (aka Katie Crutchfield) will be releasing her new album Saint Cloud on March 27 via Merge Records. The first single from the album is titled “Fire,” which gives us a glimpse into the self-reflective nature of the upcoming record. On the song, Crutchfield wrote the song for herself - serving as a reminder that mistakes will be made but there’s a strength in forgiving ourselves and learning to love ourselves despite those mistakes. From the gentle keyboard start of the track to the song’s slow and steady build, “Fire” replicates the kindness that we need to show ourselves. While this isn’t an overly intense song, there is a soft empowering nature to it that makes you want to listen to it whenever you’re feeling down on yourself.

Gundlach Bundschu 2012 Mountain Cuvee Red, Sonoma
https://j.mp/3aLZHnb Gundlach Bundschu 2012 Mountain Cuvee Red, Sonoma https://j.mp/3aLZHnb Gundlach Bundschu Mountain Cuvee Red 2012 You got to respect an American winery that was founded in the 1850s and still going strong. It’s now run by Jeff Bundschu, the 6th generation of winemakers. That makes it the oldest family-run winery in the US. To survive Prohibition, they raised cattle instead of harvesting grapes. Gundlach Bundschu Label, Circa 1889 I am glad to see this wine in the PLCB wine & spirits stores. This is a Bordeaux blend of sorts, mostly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with some Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. However, there is also a significant amount of Zinfandel and Syrah (about 6% of the blend), which pushes you past the classical profile into something new. This is a hard wine to pigeonhole. On the one hand, this bottle has a level of sophistication. It has a burnt cedar note on the nose, and it pushes some Rhone-like notes as well, including some garrigue. In the finish, there are all sorts of lush chocolate notes in the background. However, it’s also has a round plushy element that is all sorts of trashy. This is probably going to be my dinner party wine for this holiday season. It’s got the stuffing to keep me interested and the gobs and gobs of fruit to keep my guests amused.

Going places: Wine and art, the perfect pairing in Sonoma, Calif. – Entertainment
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by Karen Rubin with Dave E. Leiberman, Laini Miranda, Eric Leiberman & Sarah Falter Journey Options Syndicate, goingplacesfarandnear.com
Wine and artwork are an ideal pairing, we found touring Sonoma, California, well-known for its vineyards and wine-tasting experiences.
Give it some thought: wine-making is absolutely the synthesis of nature, science and artwork, the vineyards are themselves these bucolic pastoral settings that encourage artwork. Certainly, there’s a relaxing aesthetic to the neat, symmetrical rows, the pleasing colours, the sense of renewal.
Artwork is nearly as ubiquitous as wine in Sonoma, artwork galleries just like the Paul Mahder Gallery in Healdsburg, have their very own wine-tasting; vineyards have artwork, just like the Donum Property winery with a considerable sculpture backyard, in addition to particular artwork, music and cultural occasions, like Gundlach Bundschu Vineyard which organizes pop-up outside artwork reveals (live shows and weddings additionally when COVID restrictions are lifted), and Imagery which has its personal artwork gallery of commissioned works for its labels.
Sonoma wineries – together with eating places, artwork galleries, outlets, and the entire customer ecosystem – have made lodging to proceed to welcome friends to wine tastings whereas sustaining well being protocols. Visits are by advance reservations to restrict capability, served outdoors; artwork galleries and outlets are nicely ventilated and at this writing require masks inside and social distancing.
Sonoma County has a outstanding vary of terroir and microclimates – from the Pacific shoreline, the redwood forests, fertile valleys and mountains – that has produced one of the numerous winegrape-growing areas on this planet, and in addition one of the picturesque.
We skilled wineries and vineyards nearly day by day – visiting a number of for tastings, to make certain, but in addition because the scenic backdrop to biking. They aren’t solely so exquisitely scenic – bucolic, pastoral landscapes with shade and sample of the rows rippling with the rolling hills – however provide fascinating, even dramatic histories. And simply as their wines are distinct, so is the tasting expertise and ambiance.
On one in every of my bike excursions, I stumbled on Buena Vista Vineyard, which has an entertaining approach of presenting historical past and its personal again story with a declare to being California’s oldest business vineyard, in truth, the birthplace of the state’s trendy wine business: The founding father of Buena Vista Vineyard, Depend Agoston Haraszthy, got here from Hungary initially in pursuit of gold however in 1857, determined as a substitute to construct a stone vineyard on the property. He launched cuttings from Europe’s greatest vineyards to California and principally proved that California may produce wine. You’ll be able to join the “Be the Depend Expertise,” wine mixing because the Depend may need achieved it, or style a flight whereas touring the Wine Device Museum. Buena Vista Vineyard, 18000 Outdated Vineyard Street, Sonoma, CA 95476, 800-926-1266, [email protected], www.buenavistawinery.com
Imagery Property Vineyard boasts “we’ve been exploring the intersection of artwork and wine for over 30 years.” They’re extraordinarily pleased with inviting notable modern artists to design their wine labels and even have an artwork gallery of the unique work. We completely loved our 45-minute alfresco tasting of 5 small manufacturing wines at Imagery, a vineyard that prides itself on “crafting uncommon wines from unusual varietals and character-rich vineyards.” Imagery Property Vineyard was solid from a thirst for experimentation.” They highlight fascinating, non-traditional varietals like Lagrein and Tempranillo, “creating expressive wines that broaden the palate.” Reservations are required for outside seated tastings, Thursday-Monday, and outside picnic tables; you may order a Charcuterie field. Imagery was planning to reopen its picnic experiences in Might (name to get newest on what is out there). Imagery, 14335 Hwy 12, Glen Ellen, CA 95442, 877-550-4278, 707-935-3000.
Benziger Household Vineyard, the sister vineyard to Imagery, for greater than 25 years, has farmed the ranch on Sonoma Mountain utilizing Licensed Biodynamics, an natural and sustainable farming methodology. The ranch offers habitat for quite a few species of crops, animals and bugs, with gardens and an insectary that play an necessary half of their Biodynamic farming strategies. Benziger is at present providing a 1.5-hour Personal Tribute Property Tour & Tasting (restricted to personal group of as much as 6 friends). The vineyard plans to open reservations for indoor tastings this month and to launch its picnic experiences.
Benziger has but to re-start its two-hour “Biodynamic Tram Tour, one of the distinctive vineyard experiences in Sonoma Valley. “The true purpose of the tour program was to create an expertise for friends that went past the tasting room. We wished to immerse them within the pure setting of the land and assist them perceive the complexity of the Sonoma Mountain property and the way it made our wines distinctive. This stays our primary purpose… As our winemaking course of developed into Biodynamics with the discharge of our Property grown Biodynamic wine, Tribute, in 2001, our tour developed as nicely to what it seems like right this moment. With the introduction of our caves, the tour was fine-tuned to present a full academic overview of the grape rising course of, vineyard manufacturing amenities together with barreling and cellaring to wine tasting. Guests had been now in a position to observe the total technique of a working vineyard from the winery to the bottle. As one in every of only a handful of Biodynamic vineyards in North America… ‘Farming for Flavors,’ our Licensed Sustainability program, continues to be one of the complete sustainability packages within the nation.”
Benziger Household Vineyard, 1883 London Ranch Street, Glen Ellen, CA 95442, 707-935-3000; open Thursday-Monday by appointment solely.
Gundlach Bundschu makes a declare to being the oldest family-owned vineyard in California: for six generations and greater than 160 years, since 1858, the Bundschu household has farmed the Rhinefarm property winery on the crossroads of the Sonoma Valley, Carneros and Napa Valley (www.gunbun.com/historical past/). Gundlach Bundschu provides a pleasant, bucolic setting. The vineyard has been providing pop up artwork reveals and when restrictions are lifted will return to presenting live shows and weddings. We loved music with a DJ throughout our wine tasting. Gundlach provides excursions aboard a six-wheeled Pinzgauer – an Austrian-made navy automobile – to get WAY off the overwhelmed path on a Sonoma winery tour. Sip 5 property chosen wines at stops alongside the best way, cease for an impromptu picnic within the vines, find out about trendy grape farming strategies and take in the views of the vinneyard on this off-road journey. A minimal group measurement of 6, most group of 10 individuals is required to ebook. $85 per particular person + 18% gratuity.
Another choice: a strolling tour via the vineyards, guided by a wine educator to find out about their Inexperienced Enterprise Practices, Fish Pleasant Farming and different sustainable winery practices. Pattern 5 property wines sourced from the 320-acre property. (No kids underneath 12 years outdated or pets on the tour.) This personal group expertise requires a minimal group measurement of 6 friends, most of 10, accessible day by day. $65/particular person + 18% gratuity.
Open day by day 11am-4:30 pm; should ebook reservation prematurely; teams restricted to 6; canine truly welcome. Gundlach Bundschu Vineyard, 2000 Denmark Road, Sonoma, CA 95476707.938.5277, [email protected] www.gunbun.com
Donum Property: Wine merges with artwork at Donum Property, famend for its open-air sculpture assortment that includes over 40 works by world-renowned artists. The Uncover ($95) and Discover ($150) experiences are by appointment solely and embrace excursions of open-air artwork sculpture assortment. Donum Property, 24500 Ramal Street, Sonoma, 707-732-2200, thedonumestate.com.
We didn’t have the chance to do a wine tasting at Hanzell, which instructions one of the beautiful views of the hillsides and mountains, however occurred to be there at sundown. We plan to return. Hanzell Vineyards was based by Ambassador James D. Zellerbach in 1953 with a imaginative and prescient to create wines that might compete on the world stage. Named for his spouse Hana, Hanzell sits on the southern toe of the Mayacamas mountain vary overlooking the south-western finish of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay. After in depth time spent in Burgundy, Zellerbach returned impressed and educated by the area’s wines and grapes—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. He planted these two varieties at a time when there have been lower than a couple of hundred acres of every planted in North America.
Since 1975, Hanzell has been solely owned by the de Brye household, who is devoted to the preservation of custom with a progressive and holistic strategy to make sure the sustainability for generations to return. The Hanzell Tasting expertise takes place overlooking its historic “Ambassador’s 1953” winery block on one in every of its new outside platforms. In the course of the 60-minute go to ($45/pp), you get to style three present launch wines whereas studying concerning the Hanzell story, our progressive built-in farming practices and winemaking philosophies. Tastings by appointment solely; restricted to 6 individuals.
Hanzell, 18596 Lomita Avenue, Sonoma, CA 95476, go to www.cellarpass.com to make your reservation or name 707-996-3860.
Folks have the concept wine tasting is dear however most of the wineries in Sonoma County provide both free wine tasting or waive the tasting charge with a wine buy. Insider’s tip: it’s usually higher worth (cheaper) to hitch the wine membership and luxuriate in a free wine tasting, which offers further privileges together with discounted costs; they sometimes ship the bottles you select.
Additionally, Sonoma County Tourism sells one- and three-day tasting cross (on cellular) that you would be able to redeem on the wineries you select to go to. For extra details about what’s open, preparations to go to and lodging, and buying the tasting cross go to Sonoma County Tourism, www.sonomacounty.com/locations/wine-regions.
Artwork Experiences Abound
On the opposite facet of the equation, artwork galleries pair with wine. Certainly, it was artwork, not wine, that introduced us to Sonoma.
Our journey was timed for a particular occasion: the opening of Laini’s artwork exhibit, “Between Partitions” on the Paul Mahder Gallery, a big, nicely ventilated gallery house and, as an added deal with, with an open-air wine-tasting room with the wine bottles embellished with Paul’s work (paulmahdergallery.com; laininemett.com).
That is what introduced us to Healdsburg, a splendidly vibrant, culturally wealthy city with some 25 artwork galleries and a food-and-wine haven with 30 wine-tasting rooms and marvelous eating places that embrace Sonoma County’s farm-to-table motion. We liked our lunch at Bargas, and our dinner on the H2Hotel restaurant, with beautiful outside seating areas. The well being precautions all through Healdsburg had been spectacular (there’s even sanitizer positioned at crosswalks).
It’s a particular expertise to fulfill the artist at a gallery opening who provides private insights into the work and artistic course of, however visiting an artist in his studio provides one other dimension – seeing works-in-progress on their easels, a complete profession on show and having the chance to debate the nuances and background of the works in such a private setting. We had that have with Kevin Kearney, who epitomizes the wedding of artwork and wine (he used to personal a winery).
Kearney is a grasp of beautiful, mind-blowing positive real looking element paying homage to the Dutch masters, however with a unusual sense of surrealism and trendy sensibility, usually enjoying on historic myths and pictures. He tells us that it took 100 hours simply to color the carpet in one in every of his works.
“In Kevin Kearney’s work, there are on a regular basis chairs from which the viewer sees the world realistically. And there are magical thrones from which the viewer imagines haunting creatures on patterned carpets floating via cerulean skies above cerulean seas. His purple partitions and surreal ceruleans look tranquil sufficient, however beware, any minute, a tsunami may erupt,” writes Barry Nemett, within the catalog for Kearney’s 2019 exhibit, “Purple Partitions, Surreal Ceruleans, and a Tsunami,” on the Ice Home Gallery, Petaluma. (https://hyperallergic.com/514445/paintings-kevin-kearney-red-walls-surreal-ceruleans-and-a-tsunami/)
Listening to the tales behind the symbols and the imagery from the artist straight transports you into the canvas and the artist’s thoughts.
You’ll be able to request to go to the studio/gallery of artist Kevin Kearney who has his personal winery and wine assortment (www.kevinkearney.org, www.kevinkearney.org/contact) Throughout our Sonoma go to, we rented bikes to experience on a stunning leisure path that related to back-country roads flanked by vineyards, using into neighboring Napa county. When biking, it’s enjoyable to occur upon – uncover, if you’ll – historic websites just like the Depot Park Museum and Basic Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo’s Dwelling, which you encounter alongside the path (Wine Nation Cyclery, 262 W Napa St, Sonoma, CA 95476, 707-996-6800; Sonoma Valley Bike Excursions & Leases, 254 Broadway, Sonoma, CA 95476, 707-996-2453)
We savored wine-tastings at a number of vineyards and visited artwork galleries and outlets; went mountain climbing on the Kortum Path alongside the Pacific Coast (what an incredible distinction to our mountain climbing vacation in Loss of life Valley Nationwide Park!), dined outdoor at eating places (liked Salt & Stone, Kenwood, www.saltstonekenwood.com, 707-833-6326), performed tennis on group courts, went to the farmer’s market – each place, from the mountain climbing trails to the vineyards, to the eating places, galleries and outlets – all adopted stringent well being protocols.
Sonoma County Tourism might help plan your getaway (request a Sonoma County guests information and map) and supply updates on what is out there at its See What’s Open web site.
