World Aquatic Animal Day
Because (most) humans do not actually live underwater, it is easy to forget the vast array and variety of aquatic animals that populate the oceans, seas, lakes, and other bodies of water on our planet!
Aquatic animals may be vertebrates or invertebrates. They may breathe air or extract oxygen through gills or the skin. And they may live in either freshwater or saltwater. But no matter what their differences are, one thing is for sure–aquatic animals deserve to be noticed and appreciated!
World Aquatic Animal Day is centered around humans taking the time to learn about and acknowledge the importance of all of these creatures who make their homes in the water.
History of World Aquatic Animal Day
Created in 2020, World Aquatic Animal Day was created by folks over at Animal Law Clinic at the Lewis & Clark Law School (Portland, Oregon, USA) who wanted to bring attention to the importance of aquatic animals to our societies and ecosystems. Widely used around the world, aquatic animals are often at risk due to the interactions humans have directly with the animals, or indirectly through the corruption of their habitats.
In addition to ‘fish’, the category of aquatic animals includes a variety of other creatures, such as mollusks, crustaceans, aquatic birds, starfish, corals, aquatic insects, amphibians, marine mammals, reptiles, and more.
The idea for World Aquatic Animal Day is to raise global awareness so that humans all over the world would band together to create policies, laws, education, and outreach that will help to protect these valuable animals. The hope is to elevate the status of these creatures so that people are more likely to take an active role in learning about and acting on behalf of them. Different ideas for protecting these animals continue to be featured, from plastic pollution to climate change issues.
Many organizations throughout the world participated in the first World Aquatic Animal Day in 2020, including Canada, Chile, Australia, South Africa, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Croatia, Norway, Russia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and more.
The hope is that many more will join in for future days in the coming years. The more people who get involved, the better!
How to Celebrate World Aquatic Animal Day
Celebrating the animals under the sea is the idea of World Aquatic Animal Day, and there are tons of ways to do it!
Watch a Documentary about Sea Life
Getting educated about aquatic animals doesn’t have to be boring. Learning from film crews that have been deep-sea diving can be a thrilling way to see, enjoy and appreciate the myriad of animals that live in the water.
Try out these documentaries:
The Blue Planet (2001). First airing on the BBC, this riveting series of shows gives a glimpse into life in the ocean. It was filmed in more than 200 different locations over a five year time period. And Sir David Attenborough’s voice over simply makes the ocean seem that much more compelling.
Turtle: The Incredible Journey (2009). This film uniquely follows the life of one sea turtle beating the odds, from when she was hatched to facing the natural and unnatural threats that occur in the life of such a creature.
Mission Blue (2014). Featuring the life and work of Dr. Sylvia Earl, a marine biologist and oceanographer, this documentary shows her life as it is dedicated to the study of the ocean, having spent thousands of hours of time in its depths.
Life in the Blue (2016). Showcasing the extraordinary variety and range of life that exists in the expanses of the ocean, this documentary specifically targets what takes place just under the surface in a small band of 10 meter deep water. Whether looking for shelter or hunting and foraging for food, aquatic animals participate in a host of activities in this rather small space.
Host an Under the Sea Party
Get family and friends involved in raising awareness of the needs of aquatic animals by inviting them over for a party that dives deep into the theme. Make the place festive with sea-worthy decorations and play tunes from a water-themed playlist (see below).
Serve snacks and desserts that stick with the theme of honoring aquatic animals, including cupcakes adorned with gummy fish, goldfish cheese or graham crackers, cookies baked starfish shapes or a veggie tray organized in the shape of a rainbow fish.
Fruit treats are fabulous for sea-themed parties! Oranges can be easily fashioned to create the look of an octopus by partially peeling eight strips and then leaving them sticking out from the bottom. (Draw on eyes with a non-toxic marker.) Apples can be creatively sliced to appear as crabs, while banana halves can be adorned with an eye and the stem cut to look like dolphins. And a watermelon can be creatively carved to channel the look of a sea turtle!
Raise Awareness for Aquatic Animal Day
Get others involved in the issues facing these creatures by holding events at work, school, clubs or other places where the community gathers. Make posters, host lecturers, or create a family-friendly charity event where the money is raised to donated to underwater wildlife funds. Don’t forget to use your voice to let government representatives know about the need to protect these creatures by writing letters to ask them for better rules, regulations, and laws.
Put Together an Aquatic Animals Playlist
Getting into the groove of music is a great way to bring sea creatures to the forefront of the mind–whether alone or at a party! Gather some eclectic songs together in a playlist on Spotify or another music hosting venue and jam in honor of the aquatic animals.
Try some favorite songs such as these, or come up with other creative ideas:
Too Many Fish in the Sea (1983) by The Marvelettes
Under the Sea (1989) Soundtrack from The Little Mermaid
Dead Sea (2012) by The Lumineers
Sea of Love (1959) by Phil Phillips
Across the Sea (1996) by Weezer
Only the Ocean (2010) by Jack Johnson
Deep Ocean Vast Sea (1989) by Peter Murphy
Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay (1968) by Otis Redding

Real Party: Be More Mermaid
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
Print and fill in our free Mermaid party invitation. Roll this up and tie with string and slip inside a vintage glass bottle. Decorate the neck of the bottle with twine and seashells.
SEA STREAMERS
Welcome guests with the Be More Mermaid garland and fill the room with paper streamers made from crepe paper in different pastel colours.
UNDER THE SEA
To create an ethereal look at the buffet and/or cake table decorate with the Mermaid Glitter globe and twinkling fairy lights.
BUBBLE BALLOONS
Fill the room with lots and lots of “bubbles”, by blowing up many balloons in all different sizes in pastel colours – even just all in one colour would be amazing! This is a great idea, as young kids LOVE balloons! Alternatively, hang paper lanterns from the ceiling with streamers hanging down to mimic giant jellyfish!
SEA SHELLS ON THE SEA SHORE
Decorate the centre of the table with glass vases and bottles in a variety of sizes filled either with:
Small white stones, water and water plants purchased from the garden centre
Water coloured with blue and green food colouring
Coloured Gel balls bought from florists and just add water
Sea Sand (available from hardwares) (or I have used washing powder before) sprinkled with real shells on top or paper cut outs of shells and starfish
And most importantly add the Mermaid cake toppers
THE MERMAID TABLE
Set up a place setting for each of the little ones: with Be More Mermaid themed paper plates, cups and napkins. Add paper straws and wooden cutlery for environmentally friendly disposable parytware.
SEA FOOD
Fill little bucket pails of food:
PEARLS Green Grapes
SEA CUCUMBERS Slice Cucumber
FISH AND CHIPS Fish Crackers and salt and vinegar wave chips and “sea foam” maize puffs
STARFISH AND JELLYFISH SANDWICHES Peanut butter and jam sandwiches, Cheese and tomato, Ham and Cheese, Cucumber and Kiri Cheese – all cut in the shape of stars and/or other cookie cutter sea creature shapes
AQUAHOLIC
Fill a dispenser with water and or juice, use food colouring to make it even bluer. For individual water bottles gift each guest a water bottle with our free printable water bottle labels.
BUBBLY & BITES BAR
If adults are invited too create a special area for them by serving some champagne and seafood canapés or sushi.
DIY CUPCAKES
For cupcakes, decorate the top of vanilla cakes and blue icing with crushed Marie/Tennis biscuits – and add Belgian shell-shaped chocolates on top or the We Heart Mermaids Cake Toppers.
GUMMY SKEWERS
These sweets are easy to make as one simply threads gummy sweets onto wooden skewers. These are great for the buffet or slip over a cellophane bag and tie with twine and you have very cute and sweet favours.
SHELL SLIPPERS
Customise slippers to look more sea themed, by simply trimming the rim with shells. One can also add glitter or sequins for extra bling. This also works great as a party activity for older kids and a take home pressie in one.
QUEEN OF THE SEA
Make a crown from paper and decorate with shells and other sea themed bits and pieces. For older kids you could make it a mini competition and have each mermaid model their crown and award small prizes for the best; most colourful, most creative etc.
SAND PIT SEARCH
Fill a giant plastic clam (available from most toy stores) with play sand (also available from toy stores or hardwares). Inside hide chocolate gold coins and/or mini sea plastic toys for an under water treasure hunt.
MERMAID MAGIC
Dress up your little one, in a white sleeveless t-shirt (decorate with pretty fabric bows and sequins on the neckline) and then have her wear an oversized tulle skirt in soft pastel colours) or go all out and spoil the birthday girl with a mermaid costume!
A BUCKET PAIL OF GOODIES
Decorate with sea themed stickers and glitter the Be More Mermaid party bags and fill with:
Mini Bubble Wands
Gold chocolate coins
Mini treasure chests with mermaid themed jewellery
Plastic pearl necklaces
Add our free printable favour tags to customise your little gift bags.

TokyoTreat
$25 – $35 per month
Free worldwide shipping from Tokyo
TokyoTreat is a monthly Japanese snack subscription box shipped straight from Tokyo. They recently revamped their subscription service, and they now offer two sizes. There’s the Classic for $22.50-$25 and the Premium for $31.50-$35. (The cheaper prices are for prepaid plans.) TokyoTreat curates a box of fun, seasonal snacks with the aim to share their love of Japanese treats.
The Classic Box includes 12 full sized items: 4 popular Japanese snacks, 4 sharable packs, 2 dagashi, 1 DIY kit, and 1 kinosei (health-benefit) snack. The Premium box includes 17 full sized items: 5 popular snacks, 1 party pack, 4 sharable packs, 3 dagashi, 1 Anime snack, 1 DIY kit, 1 kinosei snack, and 1 Japanese drink. It’s rare to get seasonal Japanese drinks outside of Japan, so that’s always one of my favorite items.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
They include a paper booklet and there is also a digital zine on their website. The booklet includes all the information on the snacks and how to do the DIY kit. They also include fan photos, cultural info, contests, giveaways, and mini Japanese lessons. The theme for July 2018 is “Camping Getaway.” The booklet says they picked this theme because camping and hiking are popular summer activities here in Japan. I haven’t tried camping here yet, but I do enjoy a good hike!
They’ve also included that they have a new website, JapanHaul.com, where you can buy individual snacks.
I’m reviewing the Premium box, and items marked with an asterisk* are only in the Premium.

Uji Matcha Jelly*
This month’s drink is a jelly drink made with matcha from Uji prefecture. You shake the can a few times to break up the jelly, and there’s also a vanilla sauce that gets mixed in throughout. I haven’t tried this yet, but it’s a refreshing choice for the summer!
Cookie and Cream & Strawberry Cheesecake Kit Kats*
These Kit Kats come in two flavors, Cookie and Cream and Strawberry Cheesecake. The packaging recommends eating them chilled, so I popped these in the freezer. They’re both very sweet. The Strawberry Cheesecake has a little hint of the tangy cheesecake flavor, which balances the sweetness nicely.
Pineapple & Coconut Marshmallows*
These marshmallows come in two shapes. The fish are pineapple flavored while the starfish are coconut flavored. Sometimes these flavors can come off a little lotion-y, but I was pleasantly surprised with how subtle and real the flavors were!
Butter Toast & Sesame Biscuits Party Pack*
This month’s party pack contains two types of biscuits, butter toast and sesame. They’re both a little sweet, and almost remind me of rusks. I like how simple and clean the tastes are, and I think the sesame in particular would be good for s’mores.
Koikeya Tempura Matcha Salt Chips*
These potato chips combine two traditional Japanese flavors—matcha and tempura! This sounded so odd when I read the packaging, but the flavors are subtle. The hint of bitter matcha cuts through the richness of the fried potato. I’m not sure if I detect the tempura flavor, but then again I’m not sure exactly what tempura batter by itself tastes like.
Chocolate Mint Twigs
These little chocolates have a light mint flavor and a little bit of crunch. I put mine in the freezer to intensify the cool mint taste. I like a little more of a mint punch in my mint chocolate treats, but these are still very yummy.
Okara Cheesecake Cookies
Cheesecake cookies are this month’s kinosei (health benefit) snack. They’re made with fiber, vitamins, calcium, iron, and okara. I think they’re referring to the okara that comes from making tofu? I haven’t tried this yet, but I love cheesecake, so I’m excited they included it.
Rich BBQ Potato Sticks
I often am disappointed by Japanese BBQ flavoring, but this snack was amazing! Japanese BBQ flavored chips are often on the sweeter side, which is fine, but I love the tangy American BBQ flavor. These potato sticks remind me a lot of American BBQ chips, with a strong smoky, tangy flavor.
Poteko Potato Rings Share Pack
The share pack for July contains four mini-packs of little salted potato rings. The flavor is similar to plain Pringles, but with a bit more salt. The unique shape is fun, and I know I always reach for salty snacks when it’s warm out.
Pretty Cure Chocolate Wafer
The anime snack is a chocolate wafer that comes with little nail stickers. I haven’t heard of Pretty Cure, and I don’t really do my nails, but the packaging is cute! The wafer itself is pretty standard—not bad, not great.
Cheese Umaibo
It’s not a Japanese snack box without an Umaibo, right? This ever-popular puffed corn snack is cheese flavored. The strong cheese taste pairs well with the airiness of the puffed corn.
Grape Soda Gummy
One of the dagashi, this is a little grape soda gummy. It has a firm texture with a strong grape taste, and a little bit of soda fizz.
Konpeito Candy
A traditional candy, konpeito is made from sugar and often dyed in bright colors. There are five possible color schemes, all inspired by flowers. I got pinks and oranges inspired by cosmos flowers. It’s a very sweet, simple, and crunchy snack! It’s reminiscent of the rock candy I had as a kid.

Water Candy DIY
The last item is a DIY. This DIY has been in a lot of Japanese snack boxes, and it’s not my favorite. You mix lemon, strawberry, and soda gels together to make a mystery flavor.  If you like liquid candies, then this is for you.
My favorites from this month were the Butter Toast & Sesame Biscuits Party Pack, Koikeya Tempura Matcha Salt Chips, Chocolate Mint Twigs, and Rich BQQ Potato Sticks. They included a good mix of sweet and savory, and I really appreciate how many limited edition items there are every month. Japanese snack companies are always turning out new or seasonal flavors, which is one of my favorite things about Japanese treats!
Make sure to check out their social media for contests, coupons, and sneak peaks of upcoming boxes.
If you want to get your own Classic or Premium box, you can do so here. Prices range from $25 – $35 per month and boxes are shipped from Tokyo through Japan Post. Shipping is free worldwide!
PR sample. All opinions are my own, and no compensation was received for this review. Affiliate links are used.

Real Party: Mermaid Party
LET’S BE MERMAIDS
Julie from In Good Company shows us how to throw an under-the-sea themed birthday party, complete with beautiful mermaids and ocean decorations!
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
Print and fill in our free Mermaid party invitation. Roll this up and tie with string and slip inside a vintage glass bottle. Fill the bottle with sea sand, some mini shells and close with a cork stopper. Decorate the neck of the bottle with twine and decorate seashells or paper starfish, which can act as a nametag too.
SEA STREAMERS
Welcome guests with the free printable CELEBRATE bunting and fill the room with paper sea posters and streamers made from coloured paper in different blues and greens.
UNDER THE SEA
To create an ethereal look, possibly at the buffet and/or cake table – hang a white mosquito net, decorated with a mermaid themed garland and twinkling fairy lights.
BUBBLE BALLOONS
Fill the room with lots and lots of “bubbles”, by blowing up many balloons in all different sizes in white, blues and greens – even just all in one colour would be amazing! This is a great idea, as young kids LOVE balloons! Alternatively, hang white, blue and/or green Chinese paper lanterns from the ceiling with streamers hanging down to mimic giant jellyfish!
BONUS: Check out Party Pieces range of giant confetti balloons and Mermaid Mylar shaped ones too.
SEA SHELLS ON THE SEA SHORE
Decorate the centre of the table with glass vases in a variety of sizes filled either with:
Small white stones, water and water plants purchased from the garden centre
Water coloured with blue and green food colouring
Coloured Gel balls bought from florists and just add water
Sea Sand (available from hardwares) (or I have used washing powder before) sprinkled with real shells on top or paper cut outs of shells and starfish.
Glitter Mermaid Paper Honeycomb Centrepieces
  THE MERMAID TABLE
Create a low table for kids and cover with a Party Pieces mermaid themed tablecloth or a plain white tablecloth. Set up a place setting for each of the little ones: with Lets Be Mermaids themed paper plates, cups and napkins. Add paper straws (Party Pieces have blue and pink ones featuring glitter embellishments in the shape of mermaids and shells) and wooden cutlery for environmentally friendly disposable parytware.
SEA FOOD
Fill little bucket pails of food:
PEARLS Green Grapes
SEA CUCMBERS Slice Cucumber
FISH AND CHIPS Fish Crackers and salt and vinegar crisps
STAR SANDWICHES Peanut butter and jam sandwiches, Cheese and tomato, Ham and Cheese, Cucumber and Kiri Cheese – all cut in the shape of stars and/or other cookie cutter sea creature shapes (see Let’s Be Mermaid Cookie Cutter set).
MERMAID WATER
Fill a dispenser with water and or juice, use food colouring to make it even bluer. For individual water bottles gift each guest a Water Bottle With Freezer Stick Mermaid or customise shop bottles with our free printable water bottle labels.
BUBBLY & BITES BAR
If adults are invited too, create a special area for them by serving some champagne and seafood canapés or sushi.
DIY CUPCAKES
For cupcakes, decorate the top of vanilla cakes and blue icing with crushed Marie/Tennis biscuits – and add Belgian shell-shaped chocolates on top or the Lets Be Mermaids Cupcake Kit toppers/We Heart Mermaids Cake Toppers.
WATER WANDS
Customise Party Pieces Sparkly Star Wands to look more sea themed, by simply trimming the stars into starfish shapes; add glitter or sequins for extra bling.
Fill a giant plastic clam (available from most toy stores) with white play sand (also available from toy stores or hardwares). Inside hide chocolate gold coins and/or mini sea plastic toys for an under water treasure hunt; made even more special with one of the Party Pieces Glitter coin purses for each guest.
MERMAID MAGIC
Dress up your little one, in a white sleeveless t-shirt (decorate with pretty fabric bows and sequins on the neckline) and then have her wear an oversized tulle skirt in soft pastel colours) or go all out and spoil the birthday girl with a Party Pieces mermaid costume!
CLASSIC FUN
If your party is an all-day affair, keep all the little mermaids occupied with the Party Pieces ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ style mermaid party game. Kids will love sticking the cute pink seahorses on the mermaid while they wear the included glitzy blue blindfold. Another idea is to purchase Party Piece’s glitzy mermaid piñata – it is both a fun decoration and exciting game for the kids to enjoy! Fill with treats and hang up in your party venue. The lovely mermaid features a shimmering iridescent mermaid tail and beautiful long hair. When it’s time for the fun and games, kids can take turns hitting the piñata until it breaks open and all the prizes and goodies fall out for children to enjoy!
