Tirupur comprises 9000 t-shirt manufacturing units. This is a small city spread over 27 Sq Km. The revenue that this city generated in 2019-20 was $6 billion, which is too much for such a small city. Talking about the employment these t-shirt manufacturing units generate are 9,00,000 direct employment and 4,00,000 indirect employment. 
Tirupur the Leading T-shirt Export City in India 
India’s 80% of the total export of knitwear items is done by a small city called Tirupur. Tirupur is responsible for 4% of India’s total exports. Out of Tamil Nadu's total exports, Tirupur's contribution is 13.5%. Tirupur exported $4.8 billion worth of knitwear items in the year 2020-21. These are some big stats of a small city. 
The story of Tirupur export started when a European merchant named Verona came to Tirupur with a Mumbai-based exporter. Verona was very surprised with the quality of the t-shirt manufactured, and later, he became the brand ambassador of Tirupur in Europe. In 1981 first deal was signed with a European brand for exporting t-shirts. In today’s time, Tirupur is the go-to destination for some big brands like Zara, H&M, Tommy Hilfiger, Vanhusen, Gap, and many more brands.

The High Court of Madras Verdict 
The high Court of Madras gave a verdict to shut down all the units that are imitating harmful gas. This verdict led to shutting down 179 units in Tirupur. In a place like Tirupur, it is very hard to find workers; there is a high shortage, which has led to low production in this city. 
High Wages 
In Tirupur, the average salary of a worker is around Rupees 15,000, which is very high compared to overall India’s average, which is around 7,000. This has led to an increase in the production cost of the products. One of the reasons behind this high salary demand is low worker availability. 
High Tariff 
For the import of fibers there is a duty that we have to pay. This import duty increases the price of the final product, which is a problem for us in a competitive market. Suppose there is no import duty on fibers. In that case, Tirupur, the t-shirt manufacturing hub of India, will prosper, and it could lead to a higher rate of growth of the textile industry in India. 
High Transportation  As raw material for t-shirt manufacturing is cotton bales. These cotton bales are purchased from Gujarat. The transportation of cotton takes place through roadways, which increases the cost. Suppose the government launches some initiatives and transports this cotton through waterways. In that case, the cost of transportation can be reduced drastically, and Cotton t-shirt manufacturers could compete in the international market.
