in honor of a recent rise in roleplays set in the uk, coinciding with the recent global success of the new british netflix show sex education, i was inspired to create this guide to roleplaying british characters. as a british kid myself i love seeing these characters in rps, but have often had friends in the rpc tell me that they struggle to write them due to the differences in popular culture, dialect, slang, media etc.
of course, accuracy isn’t TOO important when it comes to this, since british people generally aren’t a marginalized or oppressed group. however i do think this is a guide a lot of people will find valuable. in a poll with 43 respondents, the highest percentage of roleplayers were from north america (72.1%) compared to only 9.3% coming from the united kingdom (all info correct at time of posting). with the assumption that people mostly write characters that are from the country they’re most familiar with, there aren’t a lot of british characters in tumblr rp. if this guide can provide non-UK-based rpers with the info they’re seeking to pen a british muse, then my job here is done!
DISCLAIMER: if you were looking for a guide written like an essay or report, this ain’t it! this is mostly a collection of external resources you may find useful when writing your characters, as opposed to written instructions.
PLEASE, LIKE OR REBLOG THIS IF YOU FOUND IT USEFUL IN ANY WAY!
GEOGRAPHY — where will your character be from?
as a british person who isn’t exactly the most well-traveled, there are definitely inaccuracies in my knowledge of other countries’ geography. i wouldn’t be surprised if some people struggle with the same issue, but regarding the united kingdom. if your character is from the UK, it’s important to know that their characterization should differ depending on which part they’re from.

why is the republic of ireland not a part of the united kingdom?
NOTE: this guide will not include info on how to write characters from the republic of ireland, as that identity is one of its own and is not classified as part of the uk!
SOCIAL CLASS — what kind of socio-economic background will your character have?
class is an important issue in the UK, in some ways more-so than the US. the first bullet point of this section is an interesting article which explains why this is, but to summarize: the american dream – though flawed, is a reality to an extent. there is no such concept in the UK, making the class situation and socio-economic divide a little different.

the seven social classes of 21st century britain — where do you fit in?
POLITICS — what kind of stance will your character take?
just like in any country, politics is extremely important in the UK. just like in america, the country is extremely divided between left and right. if political views is something your character views as important, or you think that their politics defines their characterization in any way, this section should be helpful!

brexit, explained
to summarize the two main parties: labour = left-wing = good. conservative = right-wing = bad.
ETHNIC DIVERSITY — what kind of ethnic background will your character have?
similarly to the US, the UK (though dominated by caucasian people aka white british) encompasses many different cultures. according to the UK gov “87% of people in the uk are white, and 13% belong to a black, asian, mixed or [from] other ethnic group[s], according to the combined 2011 censuses.” while non-white ethnicities are a definite minority, it’s so important not to erase their existence.

IDENTITY — what kind of cultural identity will your character have?
ask a scotsman for a handful of reasons he’s different from an englishman, and he’ll talk for hours. within england alone, ask a londoner how they’re different from a mancunian and they’ll talk for even longer. different parts of the uk have different identities, and it’s important. something we want to avoid is the “posh”, well-spoken, crumpet-eating stereotype or, on the other end of the spectrum, the modern-day oliver twist. expand your horizons!

LANGUAGE, DIALECT, ACCENT, SLANG — how will your character speak?
here’s where the fun parts start! there are so many different variations of accents, regional dialects, area-specific slang and colloquialisms throughout the uk. sometimes i see british characters being written with little to no use of any of these, nothing at all differentiating them from american characters and it’s such a waste in my opinion. even if you don’t like writing with a an accent (some people don’t!) the dialect and slang words along can make your character so much more authentic.

SURROUNDINGS — what’s it like where your character grew up, or where they live now?
whether your character comes from one of these places OR lives there now (or both!) it might be interesting to incorporate some of their surroundings into their characterization. this section isn’t classified by country/region, because if i were to start going into that much detail here, this guide would go on forever!

POP CULTURE / MEDIA — what does your character like? what are they consuming?
us brits are very proud of our own british-made media. our television, our music, our cinema, etc. if you’re somebody who is interested in including the things a character likes in their characterization, it would be unrealistic not to give a british character some favourites from the place they’re from.

Earth Premiere "The Mandrake's Hymn" & Interview / Guitar.com
Tumblr media
youtube
via guitar.com
Earth’s trajectory is not so much of an orbit as it is a deviation. For the past three decades, the only constant for the band headed by Dylan Carlson has been change – which is ironic for a group whose music relies heavily upon repetition.
Earth started out with ground-shaking seismic drone metal on 1993’s Earth 2, then took a left turn in 2005 into the arid West with the Morricone-inspired Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method. Almost a decade later, they ventured into meditative rock with Primitive And Deadly.
Now, the band have purged themselves of any embellishments, stripping instrumentation down to Carlson on guitar and bass and Adrienne Davies on drums and percussion. The upcoming record, Full Upon Her Burning Lips, is a lesson in austerity, and spotlights the duo’s sonic symbiosis.
Ahead of the release, we speak with Carlson about the record, his fascination with Telecaster pickups and his favourite collaborations thus far.
Tumblr media
Dylan Carlson (left) and Adrienne Davies of Earth
The new album sees Earth stripped down to the core duo of you and Adrienne Davies. Can you shed more light on this decision?
Well, I’ve been playing with Adrienne for almost 20 years now, and on previous albums, I’ve been fortunate enough to play with a lot of amazing players, but I really wanted this album to focus on the two main members at this point. Just because we really haven’t done that since, probably, Hex; Or Printing In The Infernal Method.
I also felt like live drums have always been a big part of what Earth does, but that has never come across as fully on record. You know, because when you’re recording a bunch of different instruments, you need to leave room for stuff, and I always felt like the drums didn’t show the full potential that Adrienne’s capable of.
And then also, I’ve always sort of been the guy that holds everything down with my guitar and let a lot of other instruments carry the melodic work – whether it’s cello or keys or stuff like that. So I sort of wanted it to just be the two of us showing off the best of our abilities.
The previous records, they’ve all been very lush sounding and I wanted this one to be very present and dry, and upfront. Using the 70s style, you know, where I was running two amps for the basics and hard panning guitars left and right – the kind of stuff that you just don’t really hear any more on record.
Can you tell us a little more about the title Full Upon Her Burning Lips?
I’m always trying to find titles that I feel are numinous and open to multiple interpretations. Many of them, I don’t necessarily see and people tell me about them later. Like someone recently asked if [the title] was about the moon because of the “full upon” bit – which I hadn’t thought of.
I feel like music is a sensual and sensuous experience, so I wanted a title that could evoke that. Originally, the cover idea I had for Primitive And Deadly was going to be much sexier than it turned out. I was sort of on a Scorpions jag at the time [laughs]. I think a lot of music now is missing that element. There’s so much music that’s hyper-male. To me, Metallica is a perfect example – nothing in their music or lyrics reflect the idea that there’s a feminine principle to the universe. So, I guess that’s where it came from.
youtube
You mentioned in a statement that you like the “limiting of materials to force oneself to employ even more creatively”. How did that reflect in terms of guitar tone for this album?
For this one I basically used a limited number of effects. I used my live rig, which was like a compressor, an overdrive, a Uni-Vibe and a delay. I mean I used one other overdrive for some cleaner textures and an auto wah on one track, but I pretty much tried to limit it to just the pedals that I use live.
I tried to get the most out of them. For example, I’ve used the Uni-Vibe for a long time, but I’ve always just used the vibrato setting. I never thought the chorus was very useful, and then on this album, I figured out a bunch of really cool sounds with that setting. So that was fun to use in a different way than I normally do.

A lot of artists tend to compose instrumental music around tension and release. Is that an approach that you take as well?
I guess so, but I don’t know if it’s a conscious one. I feel like all songs should have some kind of arc – I call it a “narrative arc”. Although [with instrumental music] it’s very loose, as there’s obviously not any lyrics telling you what the story is. I sort of – in this very abstract sense – feel like songs and albums should still have a narrative arc. And I hope we convey that in the way that I put stuff together.
Again, it’s a sort of an abstract notion of a narrative, but you know, a song should start somewhere and then go somewhere, in some sort of rudimentary sense. I think that’s why, with instrumental music, the song titles become important. It’s the only way of conveying some kind of narrative with language.
I feel like music is a language in and of itself, and [communicates] in a different way. Music is simultaneously more immediate and more abstract in its meaning. With instrumental music, the audience is also participating in the creation of the meaning or the narrative or the imagery.
It’s not like songs with lyrics where it’s like “Oh my baby left me” or whatever. With instrumental music, it’s more challenging.
This album has a lot of minimalism and repetition. How do you make repetitions sound like progression to the listener?
With repetitive music especially, be it like the riff or the melody or whatever, it should be something that you want to hear again. So I think crafting really memorable riffs is key. They should be something that you want to hear again, and the riffs themselves should have some kind of arc to them as well – so that you’re getting mini arcs that build up to a bigger arc.
That’s one thing I’m constantly trying to do. When I come up with a riff it’s like “Oh, is this something like worth repeating?” There’s that thing that great riffs have where they make you want to hear them again. Whether they’re catchy or whatever, I feel like they should be strong enough – and interesting enough – that they bear repetition.

Folklore is a major theme of this album, as it is with much of your work. What draws you to it?
To me, with the music I make, I want it to be timeless and feel like it’s always been there. Folklore has stories and knowledge that have been around forever, transcending cultures. I also feel like, especially with rock music – for lack of a better term – and American music, are all originally from folk sources. You know, blues, jazz, country, rock ’n’ roll – the music is not “high culture”. It’s not like classical music in that it wasn’t created by rich people for other rich people.
It’s popular music from the people, embedded in the salt of the earth, and it’s the same with folklore. It’s interesting and it’s numinous. It’s got a quality of timelessness, like something that’s always been there and that goes along with what I try to do hopefully musically.
Has your gear changed much over the years?
Yeah, I would say so. When I first came back to guitar playing, I hadn’t had a guitar for at least four years. So when I came back to guitar in 2001 or 2002, I was really into gear and was always buying petals. I guess you could call it GAS. But along the way, I realised that it didn’t really matter what I played, it was going to be me like regardless. And so I got a lot less gear-obsessed.
I like gear obviously – I mean, I love guitar – and I’ve found things that allow me to translate what’s in my head better, but I don’t feel like they’re necessary. I’m going to sound like me regardless of what I’m given. I think a lot of people are always looking for that “magic box” or this amp or that amp. At the end of the day, it’s you, you know?
The gear I do get now, I get it because I like how it sounds – which is the most important thing – and then whether it’s functional and helps me with touring. Number one is the sound and number two is functionality and whether it makes my life easier. Those are sort of two of my guiding principles.
Right now I play my live rig which I’m very happy with because I discovered these Trace Elliot Elfs, 200-watt heads that weigh like a pound – I’ve got two of those. And then one has a 1×12 Dietz cab, which I love. The Jesus Lizard guys use them, and Buzz [Osborne] has one. I didn’t know about them before, I was just in Austin and I needed a cab. Yeah, it weighs a shit-tonne, but that’s the only downside to it. It’s got wheels, but it’s a little monster. Then for the other one, I have a 1×12 Mesa cab that’s semi-open.
And then I recorded the album with and did my solo tour with a Burman – it’s a British amp from the early 70s. They were a company out of Newcastle and they basically built these 100-watt power amps called the “Slaves” which ran for either KT66s or EL34s – mine’s got EL34s – and then they did various preamp modules. So they were kind of ahead of the curve, in a certain way.
Tumblr media

You’ve obviously played a lot of guitars over the years. Do you have any favourites?
Yeah, my favourite guitar is the one my wife Holly bought. It has an alder Strat body, and then we had our friend, this artist Jason Borders, carve and stain it. It has no finish. It’s got a Fender neck, the classic player one, with a 12-inch radius pau ferro fretboard, and then I’ve got a brass tremolo. I love brass, I’ve had brass on pretty much all of my guitars that I can. This guitar’s also got a brass bridge and a brass nut.
And then I’ve been running a DiMarzio Fast Track Tele bridge pickup, DiMarzio Cruiser in the middle position, and a DiMarzio Air Classic in the neck. I’m a big DiMarzio fanboy, as you can tell [laughs].
Oh, and this guitar has a little thing called the StratoBlaster which was made by Alembic. It’s a little boost switch – I have mine set for about plus 7- or 8dB, but you can go all the way to 14dB. That’s nice if you want a little bit of oomph.
I have a Tele, it was one of the Roadworn ones which I guess came out in the mid-2000s. That’s got a DiMarzio Tone Zone Tele bridge and a Seymour Duncan Little ‘59 in the neck.
In Europe, I have two guitars that live in a warehouse. I have an Epiphone SG. That one’s got a DiMarzio Tone Zone Tele bridge pickup and a Super Distortion in the neck. I was in a big Jerry Garcia phase then so I got a OBEL (or On-Board Effects Loop) on it, although I very rarely used it [laughs]. And the other’s an Epiphone Explorer that has a DiMarzio Super Distortion Tele bridge pickup. I basically put Tele Bridge pickups in all my guitars.
Some of my guitars have names. Like my favourite one – the Strat or Hollycaster – I call “The Fox”. Tele is “The Cat” and the SG is “The Goddess” because it has a big sticker of Tara Guanyin on it.
Tumblr media

Do you achieve noise through the amps?
I use a lot of gain. Well, maybe not a lot of gain but I push the amps with the compressor and overdrive. With the 200-watt headroom, you’re not going to make it break up, so the tone is really a combination of pickups, overdrive and my hands. It’s not the amp. Same with the Burman – it’s a 100-watt – so the headroom’s massive.
If I’m playing a smaller tube amp, like when I had a 50-watt Plexi for a while, I didn’t use overdrive. I just hit the front end hard with the compressor. That was still like, loud as fuck. Over the years, I’ve come to understand headroom and the fact that no one really needs anything more than 50 watts. Even that is overkill, really, for most venues. Back in Earth 2 days, when I didn’t know any better, and I was young and could lug a shit-tonne of gear, it was like, “Oh yeah, let’s have, all this ridiculous amount of equipment!”. Back then most soundmen didn’t even bother mic-ing us, you know? Now I understand to let the PA do the heavy lifting.
I understand we all grew up on the cool pictures of [Jimi] Hendrix in front of a wall of Marshalls. But there were no PAs and they were playing outdoors half the time. Of course, you need like 25 Marshalls or whatever! It was a different time, with a 100-watt head now you’re never going to get to that sweet spot at a volume that’s not going to kill people.
Let’s talk about collaborations for just a second. What would you say has been your best experience so far?
Well, I love working with Kevin [Martin, aka The Bug]. It’s a whole different world than the one I am used to inhabiting. So it’s very fun for me in that way because I just get to be the guitar player and be creative.
I also love Emma [Ruth Rundle]. I think she’s an amazing musician and a wonderful human being, so that was enjoyable. And with Maddy Prior, that was super because obviously I was really into English folk. Yeah, so getting to meet an OG [laughs] and she was a lovely, lovely woman and really easy to work with. She had written a song and asked me to play guitar on it and I got to just come in and do it.
They’re all incredibly talented and really lovely people, so they’ve all been a real pleasure to work with.
What was recording Concrete Desert like? Would you do something like that again?
Yeah, I’ve been talking to Kevin about it! [Concrete Desert] was our very first collaboration, and he basically sent me the tracks and I played guitar and sent them back. So we actually hadn’t even met in person at that point. I actually just ran into him in on the street in Krakow because we were both playing the same festival.
Then Ninja Tune wanted us to play this anniversary party in LA together, and he had this material and was like, “Hey, why don’t we do this again?” and we were actually in the studio together for a couple days. I mean, he’d already generated much of the material but then after I put my guitar on, he went back and changed it a bunch. He told me he got new ideas from the guitar parts and kinda tweaked it.
But yeah, hopefully the next time we work together we can do it with both of us in the studio, building stuff from the ground up. I don’t know when that’ll happen, but we definitely want to do something together again.
Are there any other guitarists you feel are pushing the instrument to the bleeding edge?
I think Oren Ambarchi is pretty amazing. There’s probably some guys I’m not aware of, but I know Oren and think he’s a pretty good dude. I’m a rock dude and like the fact that he still manages to inject rock into [his music] in some weird way, like with that album he did with the Ace Frehley cover, for example. I think he’s got a lot of swagger to it that others don’t have.

Balance of football power shifts in the East Midlands
Today, for the first time in the 21st century, Nottingham Forest will host neighbours Leicester City in a Premier League fixture on virtually equal terms.
It is a scenario which, less than a year ago, appeared beyond the wildest fantasies of even the most fervent of trees.
While the Foxes were revelling in their second European tour in as many seasons, Forest languished in the middle reaches of the Championship, as they had done so often throughout the previous two decades.
But last February's FA Cup clash between the sides proved to be a catalyst for a remarkable transformation.
As Cup holders, fielding a host of experienced internationals, City expected to progress with some comfort against spirited but limited opposition.
Such complacency, though, was ruthlessly dispelled as the hosts, amid frenzied scenes not witnessed in West Bridgford in many years, swept to a 4-1 victory in front of the BBC cameras.
This success gave Steve Cooper's side confidence and belief which would serve them for the rest of the season and beyond.
With the ever-nostalgic fanbase convinced that a return to past glories was imminent, Forest embarked on a run that not only saw them reach the promotion playoffs, but also - albeit with some highly benevolent refereeing decisions - prevail in them.
The club's owner, controversial Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis, embarked on a lavish summer spending spree, buying more than TWENTY players at a cost of over £150m in order to ensure his side made a positive impact in Forest's first Premier season since 1999.
Hopes within the fanbase that the trees would take the league by storm proved to be ill-founded, as Forest endured a series of hidings on visits to Manchester City, Arsenal and Leicester.
On their home turf, though, they have been a different proposition, with victories over West Ham and Liverpool helping to lift them out of the relegation zone.
In addition, Cooper has guided them to the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Meanwhile, the Foxes' tribulations have continued since last season's surrender of their much-coveted trophy.
Brendan Rodgers' side - once feared by the strongest teams in the land - went through the whole of 2022 without a single victory against a side in the league's top half.
A brief resurgence before the World Cup was halted by a heavy home defeat by Newcastle, since which further losses have left several fellow strugglers looming large in the rear view mirror.
Defeat today will plunge City into a relegation dogfight for which the club, in its present state of turmoil, does not appear - mentally, physically or financially - capable of withstanding.
And such an outcome would provide further evidence that the status of regional powerhouse - held with such distinction by City during the past decade - is now moving back northwards along the A46.

The Mr S Jones season review:
2018 – 2019 Manchester United Season Review
At the height of his career Bob Monkhouse famously said 'People laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian – well they're not laughing now'
Jose Mourinho caused similar amusement when he said that guiding Manchester United to the runners up spot in 2017/18 was one of the best achievements of his career – maybe the much criticised ex United manager knew more than he was given credit for.
And of course Roy Keane once observed 'Fail to prepare – prepare to fail' which pretty much sums up United's campaign
The close season May to August 2018
United moved fairly quickly to sign Dalot (promising right back) for 19m and the Shakter Donetsk midfielder Fred – who, according to reports, was linked to Man City -for 52m.Add a refreshed Sanchez and prospects seemed reasonable
United went on tour to the US with a scratch squad due to a number of players being involved in the World Cup in Russia. Other clubs faced similar issues but it became clear that Mourinho was in tetchy mood. He clearly felt United needed reinforcements. As the transfer deadine loomed Mourinho's mood darkened – he wanted at least 2 more players (central defence was a prority) but none were forthcoming as the window slammed shut in early August.
The World Cup ended on Sunday 15 July – the Premier league started less than 4 weeks later on August 10.Some players were involved to the end of the World Cup and were contractually entitled to a break (annual leave as most of us know it).
So as United kicked off the new season they had some players having had no pre season and having come back just a few days before the 1st game and a manager who declared that he did not think his team could challenge for the title. In retrospect other clubs – Man City and Liverpool – handled this disruption much better than United. What did Keane say?
Early season woes August 2018 to December 2018
After a lacklustre but winning start at home to Leicester, United twice conceded 3 goals in losing sucessive games to Brighton and Spurs. Victories over Burnley and Watford steadied the ship but another 3 goals conceded in losing to West Ham and an early League Cup exit to Derby had Mourinho under pressure and the the word 'sack' dominated the back pages. At home to Newcastle the reds were 2 down in less than 10 minutes but fought back to win.A couple of wins calmed the waters but a derby defeat at City – another 3 goals conceded – soon had the vultures circling.
It seemed the manager had fallen out with Pogba. Mourinho had earlier announced – somewhat unnecessarily? - that he had 'sacked' the frenchman from being vice captain. Pogba was absent in the next few matches which culminated in a defeat at Anfield with another 3 goals conceded in United's 17th league game of an already fractious season
In his first 2 seasons at Old Trafford Mourinho's United conceded just 29 and 28 goals respectively – Liverpool's final goal was already the 29th conceded in 2018/2019 and united had recorded just 2 clean sheets. They had won just 7 matches and were 11 points behind 4th placed Arsenal.
Mourinho had the demeanour of a man unhappy in his job and so may well have been relieved when he was sacked a week before Christmas
The rise - United are transformed by an interim manager December 2018 to March 2019
To the surprise of many United appointed former striker and scorer of the treble winning goal Ole Gunnar Solksjaer as caretaker manager. His previous managerial stint in England ended in relegation and early dismissal. However his impact was sensational. He had a bright, breezy and sunny personality and, aided by the returning Mike Phelan as his assistant, United played in the same way. In his first 12 league games United won 10 and drew 2 scoring 29 goals. It was a throwback to the ferguson era and coupled with FA Cup away victories at Chelsea and Arsenal the fans roared 'United are back' alongside the anthem 'Ole's at the wheel' courtesy of the Stone Roses' 'Waterfall'
The zenith of this period was an amazing 3 – 1 victory in the Champions league at PSG which overturned a 2 – 0 home defeat and sent United into the quarter final.
Little did we know that the PSG win was the last time in the season that United played anything like quality football – it was if the fizz went out of the team, that the energy had gone and performances reverted to those of early season. They reminded one of the legend Icarus who flew too close to the sun and plummeted to earth
The fall – United performances tail off – no clean sheets – individual errors – goals dry up
A few days after the PSG game United lost 2 – 0 at Arsenal which included an uncharacteristic error by De gea. In midfield Fred and Pereira had shown promise in the midst of an injury crisis. The next game was at Wolves in the FA Cup. Injured players seemed to be rushed back with indecent haste. United had been playing counter attacking football in their winning run but Wolves allowed United possession and counter attacked themselves. United again lost 2 – 0 and the seeds of doubt had been sown
During the international break Solksjaer was appointed permanent manager – if this was supposed to revitalise the team for the run in it failed lamentably
Unconvincing home wins over Watford and West Ham sandwiched another defeat by Wolves. That the Champions league run ended at the hands of Barcelona was no disgrace but by now United season had again gone off the rails – or should it be off the road. There were changes galore, loss of form and even goalie De gea was culpable letting in soft goals v Barcelona, Chelsea and Man City.
The nadir was an embarrassing 4 – 0 thrashing at Everton where it appeared that little or no effort was being made by the whole team. The failure to beat Huddersfield in the penultimate game of the season and the embarrassing home loss to Cardiff in the final game merely highlighted United's problems.
VERDICT- 6th place and hello Europa League in 2019/20
Overall a very disappointing season for United fans who in the end were desperate for the season to close and be consigned to the history books.
While champions Man City and runners up Liverpool celebrated records of achievement United were creating several unwanted records of their own – highest number of goals conceded (54) since 1979, just 2 home clean sheets (worst since 1963),just 7 clean sheets overall and none in last 13 games.United finished 32 points behind City and 32 ahead of relegated Cardiff – make of that what you will
Most United players did not distinguish themselves – McTominay showed promise and Shaw was made player of the year despite incurring 11 yellow cards. The rest either showed no progress or even regressed
Solskjaer has a mountainous job – there are weaknesses all over the field and the club has still to appoint a director of football in charge of overall strategy. Optimists will say that a club of United's size and stature will not allow itself to be in the doldrums for very long. Pessimists of your correspondents vintage will point out much the same thing was said at the end of the Busby era and there was a 26 year wait for another league title. It is 6 years years since United's last title and it could well be that the wait might extend to that endured by fans in the 70's and 80's
bye

With the news breaking that the Premier League is planning to launch its own hall of fame, attention will immediately go to who deserves a spot in there.
There’s been so many great players over the years and fans of every club will feel some of their former heroes deserve to be included. It’s tough to break it down, but here’s a look at ten who most deserve to make it in…
Thierry Henry – Arsenal
Iconic
Consistently brilliant, classy and fantastic to watch, there’s no doubt that Henry will be one of the first names in here. His stats were ridiculous over his eight seasons where he managed 174 goals in 254 games, but there was so much more to his game. He always seemed to come up with wonder goals, but there was nothing more pleasing to watch than his trademark falling away as he side footed the ball past a keeper when through on goal.
MORE: Five Arsenal legends who deserve to make the Premier League Hall of Fame
Alan Shearer – Newcastle United/Blackburn Rovers
There will always be that “what if” with Shearer and that potential move to Old Trafford, but it’s always easy to forget he was part of the Blackburn team that won the league. 260 Premier League goals is just ridiculous, and to achieve most of that with his home town team will always be special. It’s a shame that he didn’t manage to win anything with Newcastle, but he still had a legendary career.
Eric Cantona – Leeds United/Man United
Box office on and off the pitch. From scoring incredible goals to kung-fu kicking unpleasant characters off it, he was always worth watching. There will always be the feeling that he retired too soon, he only had five seasons at Old Trafford but that was still enough to see him go down in history. United won the league four times in his spell there so you can see how important he was to the team, and there are so many great goals to remember too.
One of his most iconic moments
Steven Gerrard – Liverpool
He will always have his critics for not winning the Premier League and possibly trying to be the hero to the cost of the team, but no one should be questioning his ability. He was able to do everything in the midfield and he showed many different parts of his game – from being a deadly goalscorer playing behind Fernando Torres to dropping deeper at the end of his career, he really could do everything. It’s ironic that Liverpool have gone on to be one of the best teams in the country after he left, but his ability and mark at the club will always be remembered.
Sergio Aguero – Man City
The Argentine somehow seems to be underrated at City, but his impact and contribution is incredible. 180 goals in 260 games is astonishing but he’s also produced at the biggest moments. He’s had his problems with injuries but even when he could only manage 23 games in 2013/14 he still managed 17 goals, so his ability to bounce back deserves recognition. He will already go down as a Man city legend, but if he can fire them to Champions League glory this season in the face of the European Ban then he could go down as the greatest ever.
That moment against QPR
Frank Lampard – Chelsea and Man City
This will mainly be for his contributions to Chelsea, where he became a vital part of their most successful teams. He made the move from West Ham before Roman Abramovich and his millions turned up, but he was able to show he belonged in a team full of superstars. A loose ball at the edge of the box was as good as a penalty when he was around and 147 goals for a midfielder is just incredible. He also won every competition worth having domestically and in Europe too.
Paul Scholes – Man United
It would be easy to just fill this list with United players, but Scholes was just outstanding for so long and managed to steer clear of any huge scandals during his career too. Part of his charm was he just didn’t look like a superstar footballer, but his vision and touch allowed him to get over any physical deficiencies, while he also produced some incredible thumping efforts from distance too. His legend only grew when he was brought out of retirement to help United win the league in 2013, while he was also admired by some of the biggest names in football too.
Possibly a moment he would like to forget
MORE: Man Utd fans on Red Devils legends who should make PL Hall of Fame
Patrick Vieira – Arsenal and Man City
While Arsene Wenger and Thierry Henry will take most of the plaudits for Arsenal’s success, you can’t forget the classy yet powerful man who drove everything from the midfield. A truly solid all round player who led by example, he also had the trademark ability to just glide forward and slot the ball into the net at big moments. He will also be remembered for his legendary battles with Roy Keane  (more on him in a minute) which were iconic. His presence at Man City also helped to guide them to FA Cup glory.
Roy Keane – Man United
Terrifying, leadership, courage and sheer determination will usually be attributed to Roy Keane’s success, but it’s easy to forget he was a cracking player too. A seven time league winner and iconic figure in the United midfield, he caused plenty of controversy and may have rubbed many teammates up the wrong way, but his desire to win was never in doubt. There’s also the added bonus that his scuffles in the tunnel with Vieira were more exciting than the game sometimes and his work as a pundit is also enjoyable, so he’s fully earned his place on the list.

John Terry – Chelsea
He may not be the most likeable player on the list, but you can’t deny how good he was or what he achieved with Chelsea. He made almost 500 league appearances for Chelsea in his time which included five league titles. He’s best known for his outstanding defensive ability and being the rock at the heart of many great Chelsea teams, but he also came up with some big goals at times. Off the pitch he won’t be winning any human of the year awards, but what a player.
Honourable mentions:
There are so many players who enjoyed long careers and will go down in history with their clubs for many different reasons, but the Hall of Fame should be for the best of the best.
Despite that, you could always make a case for Jay-Jay Okocha and his imagination and skills, Morten Gamst Perdersen and his left foot, Richard Dunne and his own-goal record and Paolo di Canio and his kindness to the match officials.
There are also great players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Ashley Cole, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, Tony Adams, Sol Campbell, Didier Drogba, Jamie Carragher, Ledley King, David Seaman, Yaya Toure and so many more who could deserve a place, so it will be interesting to see who goes in first.

New-Construction with Modern Farmhouse Interiors
Built by Altura Homes with interiors by Lauren Smyth and staging by Andi Marshall (recently featured here), this new-construction home with modern farmhouse interiors was featured at the builder’s Spring Parade and it still holds strong as one of their favorite homes.
The designer really wanted the interiors to feel fresh, bright, and warm with hints of industrial/modern decor. She mixed cabinet styles and finishes with industrial elements like the concrete fireplace surround and the custom hood vent in the kitchen. She tied it all together with a color palette of warm oak, black, white and shades of gray. Neutral finishes and palettes are always convenient when designing a new home because they will allow for time to do its thing and not date the look of any space drastically.
Take notes on the sources shared by the designer and have a great time, my friends!

The land of make believe
Tumblr media
Marcus Halls Props has worked on all the major West End musicals from Hamilton and Tina to Bat Out of Hell and Kinky Boots. Chris Marcus and Jonathan Hall, who set up the company in 2006, show us behind the scenes at their new premises in Ladywell
Words Nikki Spencer; Photo by Paul Stafford
At the back of Supreme Animal Foods pet supplies in Ladywell lies a secret magical world of make believe, where cakes look delicious yet can’t be eaten, flowers bloom but have no smell and there’s an array of musical instruments that won’t play a single note.
Huge shelves are stacked to the rafters with chairs and coffee tables of every design and size, piles of empty suitcases, tea sets from all eras and a plentiful supply of trays.
“Nearly every show seems to need a butler’s tray so those get used again and again”, says Chris Marcus as he and Jonathan Hall embark on a guided tour of their veritable Aladdin’s Cave.
In the workshop area a team of props makers are busy making weird and wonderful creations for stages not just in the West End but for touring shows around the globe.
“We have an incredibly talented team who have previously worked at places such as Madame Tussaud’s and the Royal Opera House”, explains Chris as he picks up a cup of tea and turns it upside down with a smile.
“We create a lot of fake food and drink and tea is one of our specialities. A while ago we did all the cakes for the Calendar Girls Musical so we had trestle tables full of cakes. You knew they weren’t real but it did still make you hungry.”
By the large warehouse doors there are two huge piles of props all packaged up and ready to be shipped to Germany and the US for tours of Bat Out of Hell. “It’s an action-packed show and it’s been quite a challenge,” says Jonathan.
“There’s one scene where a large white table cloth is pulled away to reveal a car underneath. That was a headache to say the least. We had to find a way to disguise a four-metre car convincingly as a banquet table and then work out  how to remove the cloth in an instant. In the end we suspended the cloth with electro magnets which could be released at the press of a button.”
And that wasn’t the only conundrum.
“There’s lots of furniture and quite a bit of it is in perspective. We had to have bedspreads specially made at some very funny angles, it almost sent the bedding company over the edge.”
At one workbench a retro mixing desk is being built for Motown the Musical, while most of the team are busy working on rather macabre assortment of props for A Very, Very, Very Dark Matter a new play at The Bridge Theatre about Hans Christian Anderson which is set in the attic of a Copenhagen townhouse.
The attic is stuffed full of puppets and Chris and Jonathan and the team have been making 120 of them from hummingbirds to skeletons to horses, alongside other rather unusual items including a large bible filled with dolls heads.
“Luckily we found someone in Spitalfields who was selling off a load of old dolls heads so we now have a plentiful supply is we ever need them for anything else”, says Chris.
So how did they get into this business?
Jonathan grew up in Derbyshire, left school at 16 and worked as a touring puppeteer and puppet maker before training in Stage Management at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, while Chris, who was involved in amateur dramatics when he was growing up in Devon, studied Technical Theatre at Rose Bruford College in Sidcup.
“We met when we were both working as stage managers on the Lion King and became friends” explains Chris. “We went on holiday to New York and late one evening we got chatting about what we wanted to do in the future and we came up with the idea of setting up our own props company.”
Their services were immediately in demand and last year it became clear that they had outgrown their premises in Camberwell.
Both Jonathan and Chris live in Ladywell, and they came across their new building online, although it looked nothing like it does now.
“It used to be used by Acre Lifts and was the perfect size but when we saw it, it was just a large empty space and it was only after we moved in that we discovered there was only one plug socket in the corner, and a tap with a small dribble of water coming out,” recalls Chris.
“In January some friends came over from Spain for a week to help us sort it all out and they ended up staying until April!”
They got a mezzanine company to install an upper floor where they have their office. On the wall there’s a huge whiteboard with all their current projects mapped out. They never know what they will be asked to do next.
“We get requests for all sorts of random things. We had to make a body of Eva Peron for Evita and a whole lot of bodies wrapped in plastic for a show at the Donmar Warehouse”, recalls Chris.
“You just learn to just go along with it and do your best. They will want a table that is light enough that one person can lift on their finger but that 10 people can tap dance on,” Jonathan says wryly.
“Some set designers simply present us with a rough drawing while others give us beautiful intricately made 1:25 models of everything. We still have all the ones from Tina stored in a Quality Street tin.”
As well as making things in the workshop, they regularly trawl big antiques markets such as Ardingly, Newark, Lincoln and Kempton and closer to home, Greenwich Auctions, hunting for things that can be used as they are or adapted.
“We needed thousands of old books a while back and Greenwich was good for that”, says Chris adding that eBay is also a “ very valuable resource”.
Every show works differently but once everything has been made and sourced they then attend technical rehearsals at the theatre.
“Something that someone sat and wrote at a computer may not actually work on stage so things change all the time”, explains Jonathan.
“Strictly Ballroom Act 2 bears no resemblance to the original and Tina is the same. Bat Out of Hell on stage is poles apart from what it was at the beginning,” he says.
And with shows going all around the world that means they are often travelling.
“It’s been a crazy busy year, as on top of moving I have been and all over the place from Tokyo for Mary Poppins and Toronto and  Germany for Bat out of Hell to Newcastle for Benidorm Live!
“Jonathan has been mainly on our shows in London but has been in some glamorous locations like Northampton for Kinky Boots and Leeds for Calendar Girls,” says Chris.
Every day there’s a constant steam of vans arriving with deliveries and collections. “We know our postman very well and all the delivery company drivers too,” says Jonathan.
With so much coming and going the large warehouse doors are often open so people can see in as they walk to and from the pet shop car park at the rear of the building.
“Ricky, who has run the pet shop for over 25 years, is lovely to have as a neighbour but there have been a few odd moments for his customers since we moved in”, says Jonathan.
“We recently had to make a load of cut-up animal carcasses, and butchered pig’s heads out of polystyrene for a play in the West End. You could see people doing a double take as they walked past!”

Travelling To Normandy
Tumblr media
Travelling to Normandy will depend on a number of factors but, firstly take some time to familiarise yourself with the geography of this region. It covers an area of around 30,000 square kilometers or 11,500 square miles. To drive from Mont Saint Michel in the south west of the region to Le Tréport in the north east would take around three and three quarter hours. That's around 340 kilometers (211 miles) but the majority of it is dual carriageway or autoroutes. However, there isn't an extensive network of motorways and fast roads in Normandy but there are plenty of small country roads that will make other journeys longer.
So, that's the geography covered, now let’s look at some of things you might consider when travelling to Normandy. These might include; your preferred method of travel, your budget, any time constraints you might have, your departure point and where you want to visit. If you're wondering whether you can see Normandy in a day or two, then the answer is 'no'. You will see some of Normandy but not really experience it. Remember too that France, and Normandy in particular, is not 24/7. You may find places you want to visit close for a two hour lunch break. If you only have a limited amount of time, then plan your itinerary bearing the travel times and opening hours in mind. The article also covers some travel options while you're in Normandy.
Travelling to Normandy Options

DRIVING
Driving in your own car or a hire car gives you an enormous amount of flexibility. Unless you are staying in a major city, your accommodation may be fairly rural and a car gives you the option to explore and get around at your own pace. This website  gives very practical information about driving in France including speed limits, information about speed camera detection devices in your car, breathalysers and the strange priority to the right rule (priorité à droite). The rules changed on 1st July 2018 regarding speed limits so do make sure you are aware of current legislation ad requirements.
If you need to hire a car, Europcar and other car hire providers offer a rental service
For directions, please visit visit www.viamichelin.com
EUROTUNNEL
If you'd prefer the train to take some of the strain, then you could consider the Eurotunnel. The Eurotunnel links Folkestone to Calais with a journey time of just 35 minutes. You drive onto the train at Folkestone, remain in your car and drive off when you arrive on the French side. This video takes you through the check-in, boarding and disembarcation processes.

FERRY
There are a variety of different options sailing from UK ports across the English Channel. The shortest journey is around 3 hours but you need to allow time to check in at your arrival port for passport controls and embarcation. Some ferries allow you to book reclining seats or cabins. There are various seating areas with bar, cafe and restaurant options. Duty-free shops and newsagents-style shops are on board and you can connect to Wi-Fi on some routes. On longer routes, family entertainment is also part of the package. Take a look at the video below for an insight of what to expect when travelling by ferry.

Travelling by ferry
TAXIS
Although cities and large towns in Normandy have taxis services at railway stations and airports, they are less frequent in rural Normandy. Many towns of a reasonable size and with a train station do not have a rank of taxis waiting outside as you'd find, for example, in the UK. In these cases, taxis would need to be booked in advance and hired privately.
TOUR GUIDES
There are a huge number of private individuals offering a tour guide service and some also provide a driving service. You can do your own search depending on what you're looking for or click here for some guidelines. https://normandyguides.com

Nevis a Caribbean Paradise. Read more about this hideaway..
Tumblr media
I recently visited this wonderful Caribbean Island, having visited many of the larger Islands during my 25 years in Travel and found this a breath of fresh air. If you need any information or recommendations, please let me know. I loved this island and called it my "Caribbean Hideaway"
We travelled over on the local ferry from the terminal at St Kitts, and it took about 45 minutes to get over. You can get back on the fast jet boat if you have less time.
Charlestown is a very interesting place to visit. Lots of shops, and plenty of Georgian-style buildings still remain. There's a charming lack of modernisation of Charlestown, and local efforts are underway to preserve the original buildings.
During my time in Nevis I got to visit the following hotels staying at the Four Seasons, a Luxury 5 Star Hotel with wonderful facilities, sea views and different room types.
One thing I did notice during touring Nevis which was quite amazing was the difference between the beaches on the North and Western parts of the islands. I found them much superior, less crowded and often empty compared to the beaches of South and Eastern parts, and of course clean and free to be used by everyone!
Travel around the Island is quite easy with quiet roads and very little in the way of traffic jams or road rage.
Nisbet Beach on the north coast is well maintained and surrounded by palm trees. It’s largely frequented by guests at Nisbet Beach Resort Hotel but everyone is welcome. Its gentle ocean breezes make it a popular place to spend a relaxing day. On the day I visited a group of cruise customers who had just arrived. Located in 30 lush acres, this is the Caribbean’s only historic plantation inn located on a beach. Its magnificent lawns lead down to the soft sands and the sea. The setting is beautiful and elegant.
There are 38 luxurious lemon-coloured cottages, each surrounded by almost a quarter acre of land to ensure peace and privacy. Dining is highly prized with no less than three Caribbean restaurants serving gourmet food with a local flavour and a global influence. Thursday nights feature popular beachside barbecues and a local steel band.
Personal pampering is also on the menu and a visit to the Palms Spa is a perfect complement to your stay at this relaxed hotel. Facilities include three restaurants, two bars, freshwater pool, tennis court, snorkelling, boutique, croquet and complimentary laundry.
Newcastle beaches were stunning, clean and my favourite ones. On the northern side of the island, this beach gets its name from the nearby village of Newcastle. It’s mostly covered with soft, yellow sand and is a nice spot to relax. It’s also a great place to visit on a Saturday and enjoy the atmosphere as the fishermen sell their fresh catches that day. Be sure to sample the local BBQ... wonderful!
Herberts Beach isn't far from the Nisbet Plantation Beach Club. Herbert’s Beach is renowned for its many reefs teeming with spectacular marine life. Naturally this makes it a magnet for snorkellers. The beach is close to where the Atlantic Ocean begins on the windward side of the island.
Nevis is a very elegant and romantic venue for a wedding. You can choose from picturesque churches, historic plantations, soft, sandy beaches or beautiful tropical gardens. All will make your special day a memorable occasion. I will give you all the help you need in arranging a perfect Wedding or Honeymoon and will guide you through the simple formalities.
Just some of the things to do whilst visiting Nevis include touring the Heritage Trail, turtle monitoring and swimming. Golf facilities on Nevis are world class with the main course being the Robert Trent Jones II 18-hole, par 71 course at the Four Seasons Resort.
The waters around Nevis are teeming with game fish like tuna, barracuda, sailfish, blue marlin, wahoo and mahi mahi. You can see a lot cycling in Nevis. Remember the island is only 36 square miles in size and there is a 20 mile main road that runs round it.
All in all a wonderful "Caribbean Hideaway"! I can thoroughly recommend both the historical and cultural interest of the island along with the superb North and West coast beaches and hotels.

Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
Premier League transfers: Your guide to the window so far
There have been plenty of Premier League transfers you might have missed this summer during the World Cup. So who have each team signed and sold – and who do they need to bring in?
Remember, the transfer deadline for top-flight English clubs is Thursday, 9 August this season for the first time.
All transfers correct as of 18 July 2018
Manchester City
Riyad Mahrez is Manchester City’s record signing
Position last season: champions
Transfers in: Riyad Mahrez (Leicester) £60m
Transfers out: Angus Gunn (Southampton) £13.5m, Pablo Maffeo (Stuttgart) undisclosed, Angelino (PSV) undisclosed, Ashley Smith-Brown (Plymouth) undisclosed, Isaac Buckley-Ricketts (Peterborough) undisclosed, Matt Smith (Twente) loan, Edward Francis (Almere City) loan, Manu Garcia Alonso (Toulouse) loan, Paolo Fernandes (NAC Breda) loan, Yaya Toure (released)
BBC Radio Manchester’s Andy Buckley: “City were pipped by Chelsea for Jorginho from Napoli but still have lots of midfield options. Pep Guardiola will be heartened that captain Vincent Kompany came through the World Cup unscathed and the City boss has the buying power to bring in defensive cover and an extra front-line striker if required.
“Manchester City aim to become the first club in a decade to make a successful defence of the Premier League title. It will be a much harder task this time round, though the signing of Riyad Mahrez signals their intentions.”
Manchester United
Position last season: second
Transfers in: Fred (Shakhtar Donetsk) £47m, Diogo Dalot (Porto) £19m, Lee Grant (Stoke) £1.5m
Transfers out: Daley Blind (Ajax) £14m, Sam Johnstone (West Brom) £6.5m, Joe Riley (Bradford) undisclosed, Michael Carrick (retired), Dean Henderson (Sheff Utd) loan
BBC Radio Manchester’s Bill Rice: “The arrival of Brazilian midfielder Fred gives United added steel and grit in midfield, and should allow Paul Pogba to flourish further upfield on his return from a successful World Cup, while teenage full-back Diogo Dalot’s arrival led to Daley Blind’s departure after just four Premier League starts last season.
“A commanding central defender and another hardworking wide player are the areas manager Jose Mourinho will look to strengthen, with Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld and Chelsea’s Willian among the names in the frame.
“Don’t rule out a statement signing too, United – having opted not to pursue re-signing Cristiano Ronaldo nine years after he left the club for Spain – would surely be near the front of the queue if Gareth Bale also decides to leave Real Madrid this summer.”
Tottenham
Position last season: third
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Keanan Bennetts (Borussia Monchengladbach) undisclosed, Anton Walkes (Portsmouth) undisclosed
BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “As usual Tottenham are taking their time in the transfer market. Spurs got their biggest deals done before the World Cup by securing striker Harry Kane and manager Mauricio Pochettino to new contracts.
“There might be some re-shaping of the squad to be done if they decide to sell Belgium internationals Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld. Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko, Danny Rose and Vincent Janssen may also be departing.
“Depending on departures they require wide attacking options and cover for Harry Kane.”
Liverpool
Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri seals victory over Serbia
Position last season: fourth
Transfers in: Fabinho (Monaco) £39m, Naby Keita (RB Leipzig) £52.75m, Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City) £13m
Transfers out: Emre Can (Juventus) free, Jon Flanagan (Rangers) free, Yan Dhanda (Swansea) free, Ovie Ejaria (Rangers) loan, Adam Bogdan (Hibernian) loan, Harry Wilson (Derby) loan
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “The position everyone is talking about is the goalkeeper, as Liverpool close in on a £66.8m move for Roma’s Alisson.
“Midfield has been been strengthened with Fabinho and Naby Keita, and now Xherdan Shaqiri too but many see Liverpool’s striking options needing a boost, if only in terms of experience – but anyone coming to the club will know they’ll have a job and half to play regularly ahead of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.”
Chelsea
Position last season: fifth
Transfers in: Jorginho (Napoli) £50m
Transfers out: Jonathan Panzo (Monaco) undisclosed, Mitchell Beeney (Sligo) free, Wallace Oliveira (released), Trevoh Chalobah (Ipswich) loan, Nathan Baxter (Yeovil) loan, Reece James (Wigan) loan, Dujon Sterling (Coventry) loan, Lewis Baker (Leeds) loan, Jake Clarke-Salter (Vitesse) loan, Danilo Pantic (Partizan) loan, Eduardo (Vitesse) loan, Kenedy (Newcastle) loan, Jhoao Rodriguez (Tenerife) loan, Jamal Blackman (Leeds) loan, Todd Kane (Hull) loan, Mason Mount (Derby) loan
BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri says the transfer market doesn’t really interest him and other people at the club will decide who comes in and goes out, although Jorginho has followed him from Napoli.
“However he may have to contend with some potential departures. The futures of Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois are far from certain.
“He did allow himself to suggest that he would like to see a bit more quality in midfield but that he could adapt players he currently has to do this.”
Arsenal
Position last season: sixth
Transfers in: Lucas Torreira (Sampdoria) £26m, Bernd Leno (Bayer Leverkusen) £19m, Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund) £16m, Matteo Guendouzi (Lorient) undisclosed, Stephan Lichtsteiner (Juventus) free
Transfers out: Per Mertesacker (retired), Jack Wilshere (West Ham) free, Santi Cazorla (Villarreal) free, Hugo Keto (Brighton) free, Tafari Moore (Plymouth) free, Chiori Johnson (Bolton) free, Yassin Fortune (Sion) free, Aaron Eyoma (Derby) free, Marc Bola (Blackpool) free, Vlad Dragomir, Ryan Huddart, Alex Crean (all released), Takuma Asano (Hannover) loan
BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “For the first time in over two decades Arsenal head into a new season without Arsene Wenger at the helm which makes predictions a little difficult. The last campaign for the Frenchman proved very disappointing and his successor takes over with the club at its lowest league ebb on the pitch in years.
“Unai Emery’s first objective will be to make the Gunners challenge for a top-four finish. The players who have left the squad are no major surprise while the business already done has started to fill a few of the cracks which have appeared in the last couple of years. Two experienced defenders will help and a new goalkeeper in Leno may signal a real challenge to Petr Cech in the battle for the gloves.
“Lucas Torreira looked impressive as a defensive midfielder for Uruguay in the World Cup and looks to be an astute acquisition. The front pair of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have the potential to provide goals but the Gunners could still do with some potency out wide. And at the back another dominant central defender and left sided player would be on fans’ shopping lists. But perhaps after a stale end to the Wenger era this new direction will have an immediate impact.”
Burnley
Position last season: seventh
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Scott Arfield (Rangers) free, Tom Anderson (Doncaster) free, Josh Ginnelly (Walsall) free, Chris Long, Dean Marney (both released)
BBC Radio Lancashire’s Scott Read: “They look a central defender light, having not strengthened since the sale of Michael Keane 12 months ago. Kevin Long was an able deputy for Ben Mee and James Tarkowski, but injury to either would leave them stretched at the back. A little extra pace and mobility, out wide and/or up front could also be a priority.
“The longer Burnley remain in the Europa League, the tougher they’ll find the Premier League, at least that’s how the theory goes. However, the Championship title, two consecutive years in the top flight and then securing European football has told me that theories, where Sean Dyche is concerned, often go out of the window.”
Everton
Wayne Rooney on Everton, England and the MLS
Position last season: eighth
Transfers in: None
Transfers out: Ramiro Funes Mori (Villarreal) undisclosed, Wayne Rooney (DC United) undisclosed, Joel Robles (Real Betis) free, Jose Baxter (Oldham) free, David Henen (released), Luke Garbutt (Oxford) loan, Henry Onyekuru (Galatasaray) loan
BBC Radio Merseyside’s Ian Kennedy: “I think Marco Silva and new director of football Marcel Brands will be aware of the lack of depth in the striking department. Cenk Tosun has proved to be a good signing, but he’ll need support up top. Dominic Calvert-Lewin did well last season and we know Oumar Niasse can be a handful – but can Everton find an experienced top-class striker or two?
“Everton have holding midfielders – but may look for more creative midfielders. A fit again Gylfi Sigurdsson will be a bonus and it’ll be interesting to see if Ademola Lookman is given more opportunities after coming back from his loan spell in Germany. The Blues squad is big, and may well require trimming down before any new signings come in. Last season proved tough for the likes of Davy Klaassen and Nikola Vlasic – but will the new manager give them an opportunity to impress?”
Leicester
Position last season: ninth
Transfers in: James Maddison (Norwich) £20m, Ricardo Pereira (Porto) £17.7m, Jonny Evans (West Brom) £3.5m
Transfers out: Riyad Mahrez (Man City) £60m, Connor Wood (Bradford) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Huddersfield) free, Robert Huth (released), Elliott Moore (OH Leuven) loan
BBC Radio Leicester’s Ian Stringer: “The Foxes will only really know what they need when they’re sure the likes of Kasper Schmeichel, Harry Maguire, Wilfred NDidi and Jamie Vardy won’t be poached. Claude Puel may want another left back to assist youngster Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs.
“The central midfield is packed and there’s options on the wings but yet another ‘number 10’ or creative player wouldn’t surprise me.
“Jack Grealish was mentioned before Spurs showed interest but I’d expect the Foxes to spread their transfer tentacles far and wide. An overseas star wouldn’t be strange; let’s hope they’re more successful than Ahmed Musa and Islam Slimani.”
Newcastle
Position last season: 10th
Transfers in: Martin Dubravka (Sparta Prague) undisclosed, Ki Sung-yueng (Swansea) free, Kenedy (Chelsea) loan
Transfers out: Mikel Merino (Real Sociedad) undisclosed, Massadio Haidara (Lens) free, Stuart Findlay (Kilmarnock) free
BBC Radio Newcastle’s Matthew Raisbeck: “Rafael Benitez is again frustrated by Newcastle’s approach to transfers. He was hoping for more than the £45m that was spent last summer – but has again only been given a modest budget.
“The Spaniard knows he needs to sell players – and reduce the wage bill – in order to bring in more new faces; striker Aleksandar Mitrovic – wanted by Fulham – is his most saleable asset.
“Benitez needs at least one striker. West Brom’s Salomon Rondon is the Magpies’ top target after they missed out on Alassane Plea. The United boss also wants to re-sign winger Andros Townsend from Crystal Palace, and could finance that deal by allowing Matt Ritchie to join Stoke.
“Three players have arrived so far. But given that Kenedy and Martin Dubravka have returned after being on loan, and Ki Sung-yeung is a like-for-like replacement for Mikel Merino, Newcastle are effectively no stronger than they were last season.”
Crystal Palace
Position last season: 11th
Transfers in: Vicente Guaita (Getafe) free
Transfers out: Yohan Cabaye (Al Nasr) free, Damien Delaney (Cork) free, Diego Cavalieri, Lee Chung-yong (both released)
BBC Radio London’s Nick Godwin: “Things have been very quiet on the transfer front so far this summer which has alarmed some Palace supporters.
“Roy Hodgson produced a miracle last season given how lop-sided the squad was and the number of injuries suffered through the campaign.
“A new goalkeeper has finally been brought in [Guaita] but new recruits are required in midfield and up front.
“However most efforts are being targeted at keeping hold of Palace’s current stars – particularly Wilfried Zaha.”
Bournemouth
Position last season: 12th
Transfers in: David Brooks (Sheffield United) undisclosed
Transfers out: Benik Afobe (Wolves) £10m, Lewis Grabban (Nottingham Forest) £6m, Max Gradel (Toulouse) undisclosed, Adam Federici (Stoke) undisclosed, Rhoys Wiggins (retired), Ryan Allsop (Wycombe) free, Ollie Harfield (Dag & Red) free, Sam Matthews (Bristol Rovers) free, Joe Quigley (Maidstone) free, Baily Cargill, Patrick O’Flaherty (both released), Mikael Ndjoli (Kilmarnock) loan
BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “It’s been a quiet summer so far, but the Cherries are chasing Uruguayan international left-back Diego Laxalt, and Colombian midfielder Jefferson Lerma.
“If Eddie Howe can persuade Lerma and Laxalt to come to the Vitality stadium, then two of their key needs will have been addressed. Centre-back and/or right-back could also be positions that give Eddie Howe more strength in depth and formation options.”
West Ham
Felipe Anderson is West Ham’s club record signing
Position last season: 13th
Transfers in: Felipe Anderson (Lazio) £36m, Issa Diop (Toulouse) £22m, Lukasz Fabianski (Swansea) £7m, Andriy Yarmolenko (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Fabian Balbuena (Corinthians) undisclosed, Jack Wilshere (Arsenal) free, Ryan Fredericks (Fulham) free
Transfers out: Ben Wells (QPR) undisclosed, Reece Burke (Hull) undisclosed, James Collins, Patrice Evra (both released)
BBC Radio London’s Phil Parry: “Having appointed a new manager in the shape of Manuel Pellegrini the Hammers have done their transfer business early. And after calls from fans for the club to splash some of the Premier League cash the board have gone out and invested heavily this summer to strengthen areas identified by many observers as those needing to be addressed.
“Diop looks as a fine prospect in the heart of defence while Ryan Fredericks will match the energy and up and down style of Arthur Masuaku on the opposite full-back flank. With the arrival of Anderson and Yarmolenko the Irons’ front four looks very strong and Jack Wilshere has the qualities to unlock defences [providing those injury doubts don’t haunt him].
“I suppose there could still be a couple of exits if the squad seems a little too large and there’s a suggestion that Marko Arnautovic could attract attention from elsewhere. But based on what has been done so far the supporters will be expecting a top-10 finish, a push for possible European qualification and a cup run.”
Watford
Position last season: 14th
Transfers in: Gerard Deulofeu (Barcelona) £11.5m, Adam Masina (Bologna) £3.5m, Marc Navarro (Espanyol) £1.8m, Ben Wilmot (Stevenage) undisclosed, Ken Sema (Ostersund) undisclosed, Ben Foster (West Brom) undisclosed
Transfers out: Costel Pantilimon (Nottingham Forest) undisclosed, Mauro Zarate (Boca Juniors) undisclosed, Brandon Mason (Coventry) free
BBC Three Counties Radio’s Geoff Doyle: “It looks as though Watford have again been canny in the transfer market, not spending too much (about £25m so far) but bringing in players to strengthen last season’s problem areas to bolster a squad which is already pretty strong but which was badly hampered by injuries last campaign.
“Ben Foster is an excellent goalkeeper choice, two full-backs were required and were brought in early, Gerard Deulofeu will continue to get better and the others could also make their mark.
“A striker is the one area that probably still needs strengthening. Troy Deeney’s influence has lessened over the three Premier League years although injury hasn’t helped and Andre Gray didn’t quite hit the mark last season so proven back-up is probably needed if those two don’t fire.”
Brighton
Position last season: 15th
Transfers in: Bernardo (RB Leipzig) £9m, Florin Andone (Deportivo) undisclosed, Jason Steele (Sunderland) undisclosed, David Button (Fulham) undisclosed, Yves Bissouma (Lille) undisclosed, Leon Balogun (Mainz) free, Joseph Tomlinson (Yeovil) free, Hugo Keto (Arsenal) free
Transfers out: Jamie Murphy (Rangers) undisclosed, Connor Goldson (Rangers) undisclosed, Bailey Vose (Colchester) undisclosed, Henrik Bjordal (Zulte Waregem) undisclosed, Uwe Huenemeier (Paderborn) free, Steve Sidwell, Liam Rosenior, Niki Maenpaa (all released), Robert Sanchez (Forest Green Rovers) loan, Ben Hall (Notts County) loan, Christian Walton (Wigan) loan, Steven Alzate (Swindon) loan, Ales Mateju (Brescia) loan
BBC Sussex’s Johnny Cantor: “The Seagulls moved quickly to secure long-term targets early in the window and opted for players with versatility like Leon Balogun and Bernardo who can play in a number of positions.
“Initially the main focus was on the defence and two new keepers but the spotlight has moved further up the pitch.
“The arrival of central midfielder Yves Bissouma may allow for different option of a 4-3-3 next season, a possible Plan B to improve on last year’s away from home [11 points] but a creative number 10 or another wide player may complete the squad alongside the cut-price capture of Florin Andone earlier in the summer.”
Huddersfield
Position last season: 16th
Transfers in: Terence Kongolo (Monaco) £17m, Ramadan Sobhi (Stoke) £5.7m, Juninho Bacuna (Groningen) undisclosed, Jonas Lossl (Mainz) undisclosed, Erik Durm (Borussia Dortmund) undisclosed, Ben Hamer (Leicester) free
Transfers out: Dean Whitehead (retired), Dylan Cogill (Clyde) free, Jack Boyle (Clyde) free, Jack Payne (Bradford) loan, Robert Green, Denilson Carvalho, Luca Colville, Cameron Taylor (all released)
BBC Radio Leeds’ Paul Ogden: “So far, a classic modern-day Huddersfield Town transfer window, with a nod towards the financial reward for having stayed in the Premier League at the first attempt.
“A new club transfer record has been set by the permanent acquisition of Terence Kongolo from Monaco, accompanied by a handful of other, more obscure, and typically bold bargain-hunter’s captures.
“Egypt’s Ramadan Sobhi for example, salvaged from the rubble of Stoke’s relegation collapse, wouldn’t have interested many other Premier League clubs. Head coach David Wagner however, will have seen something he liked in Sobhi as an opponent last season and believe he can get much more from the player than others have.
“Equally original is the arrival of ex-Germany international Erik Durm to add some much-needed nous to Huddersfield’s left side. His low risk, short contract from Borussia Dortmund is a classic win-win.”
Southampton
Position last season: 17th
Transfers in: Mohamed Elyounoussi (Basel) £16m, Angus Gunn (Man City) £13.5m, Stuart Armstrong (Celtic) £7m, Jannik Vestergaard (Borussia Monchengladbach) undisclosed
Transfers out: Dusan Tadic (Ajax) £10m, Olufela Olomola (Scunthorpe) free, Florin Gardos (Universitatea Craiova) free, Armani Little (Oxford) free, Will Wood (Accrington) free, Jeremy Pied, Ollie Cook, Richard Bakary, Stuart Taylor (all released), Guido Carrillo (Leganes) loan, Ryan Seager (Telstar) loan
BBC Radio Solent’s Adam Blackmore: “I expect further movement after a good summer so far for Saints. They could add a forward/winger but I suspect they will be keen to move Sofiane Boufal out on loan first. Goalkeeper Fraser Forster also looks set for a loan move away following the investment in Angus Gunn.
“Some supporters are calling for another striker, after struggling for goals in the last two seasons.”
Wolves
Shades of Banks – Portugal keeper’s brilliant save
Position last season: champions (Championship)
Transfers in: Benik Afobe (Bournemouth) £10m, Willy Boly (Porto) £10m, Rui Patricio (Sporting Lisbon) fee not yet decided, Leo Bonatini (Al-Hilal) undisclosed, Ruben Vinagre (Monaco) undisclosed, Raul Jimenez (Benfica) loan, Diogo Jota (Atletico Madrid) undisclosed
Transfers out: Ben Marshall (Norwich) undisclosed, Duckens Nazon (STVV) undisclosed, Prince Oniangue (Caen) undisclosed, Jon Flatt (Scunthorpe) free, Hakeem Odoffin (Northampton) free, Jordan Allan, Dan Armstrong, Anthony Breslin, Nicu Carnat, Ross Finnie, Conor Levingston, Tomas Nogueira, Adam Osbourne, Ryan Rainey, Jose Xavier (all released), Benik Afobe (Stoke) loan, Christian Herc (Dunajska Streda) loan, Aaron Collins (Colchester) loan, Sherwin Seedorf (Bradford) loan, Roderick Miranda (Olympiakos) loan
BBC WM 95.6’s Mike Taylor: “Wolves supporters expecting a wild summer of spending from their wealthy owners following promotion have so far been left, if not disappointed, then maybe a little unfulfilled. It’s hard to believe that will stay the case for long. Much of the money so far laid out this summer has been to consolidate last year’s squad by turning loans into permanent deals, most notably for the hugely popular Willy Boly and Diogo Jota, and they didn’t come cheaply.
“The signing of the Portuguese goalkeeper Rui Patricio may have been a little opportunistic, Wolves plucking him out of Sporting Lisbon’s summer of chaos, to the clear annoyance of his former employers, who are determined to extract some sort of payment at least. There are suggestions that Sporting want £50m for the keeper! While his quality and value is beyond doubt, it could be argued that other areas of the squad more urgently require reinforcement.
“Raul Jimenez on loan is so far the forward new to the club, and although he’s enjoyed success with Benfica, they have used him sparingly in view of their total outlay for him. If he proves to be a success or is joined by another striker, Benik Afobe’s immediate departure to Stoke after signing a full deal will look less unusual. An additional central defender would seem to be a likely priority too, and it would be no surprise to see Wolves use the loan-with-a-view-to-permanent method extensively again in whatever remaining business they have in mind.”
Cardiff
Position last season: second (Championship)
Transfers in: Josh Murphy (Norwich) £11m, Bobby Reid (Bristol City) £10m, Greg Cunningham (Preston) £4m, Alex Smithies (QPR) £3.5m,
Transfers out: None
BBC Wales’ Dafydd Pritchard: “Owner Vincent Tan said Cardiff City would learn from their previous stint in the Premier League – which ended after a single tumultuous season in 2014 – and their spending this summer suggests they have done just that.
“Winger Josh Murphy, forward Bobby Reid, goalkeeper Alex Smithies and left-back Greg Cunningham have joined for less than £30m between them, adding quality to the squad which won promotion from the Championship in efficient fashion last season.
“Manager Neil Warnock has done his business early and with the exception of a few loan signings – Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic is in the frame to return – he seems unlikely to make many more additions.”
Fulham
Position last season: third, play-off winners (Championship)
Transfers in: Jean Michael Seri (Nice) undisclosed, Maxime le Marchand (Nice) undisclosed.
Transfers out: David Button (Brighton) undisclosed, Ryan Fredericks (West Ham) free, Stephen Humphrys (Scunthorpe) loan, Elijah Adebayo (Swindon) loan
BBC Radio London’s Andy Rowley: “Fulham fans are already hoping they have got the Ivorian Xavi as Jean Michael Seri has topped the Ligue 1 rankings for passes played and completed for the past two seasons. He should certainly fit in with the way they play their football under Slavisa Jokanovic, who will also be keen to bring Aleksandar Mitrovic and Matt Targett to Craven Cottage on permanent deals after the Southampton and Newcastle players impressed on loan in the second half of last season’s promotion campaign.
“Fulham have also been busy tying key players to long-term deals with captain Tom Cairney and influential USA defender Tim Ream extending their contracts. This is good news after losing full-back Ryan Fredericks, who ran down his contract and moved to West Ham on a free transfer.
“They need to strengthen in central defence, at left-back and up front.”

10 Of The Best-Rated Beach And Seaside Destinations In The UK
It’s coming up to that time in the UK calendar when it seems safe to start thinking about three things: the possibility of lasting sunshine, more time off, and hitting the seaside for one of your best beach holidays yet.
GREAT UK HOLIDAYS ON THE BEACH!
While we’re not always a sun-baked nation, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to holiday spots on our beautiful coastlines. There are some fantastic beaches to choose from, whether craggy with jutting rock formations, piled with smooth pebbles or bordered with golden sands, just waiting for the sandcastle builders to arrive.
We’ve analysed the review scores across our UK inventory of beachside holiday lettings and whittled the locations down to a reviewers’ top ten. They’re not necessarily the most obvious destinations, so not only can you find some of the UK’s top-rated holiday rentals here, but you might even discover a new favourite holiday spot. Each pick is blessed with wonderful coastal views, welcoming communities and various attractions and activities to make your holiday on the beach a blinder.
When you’re planning a beach break, booking a private rental makes so much sense. Your cash generally goes further, giving you more space, more amenities and the privacy to unwind properly. You can eat out one night, cook up a feast at home the next, and enjoy the independence of coming and going according to no one’s schedule but your own. And as the glowing reviews suggest, someone has already worked hard to make your rental a home – full of useful practical touches, as well as welcoming personal ones.
So, here you have it: some of the best beach holidays in the UK for rental accommodation, according to our reviewers*. Buckets and spades at the ready?
