Allow Me to Release My Frustration
For the first time in 2023, I am back again at this page where I only use this when I'm feeling something extreme that I cannot contain, whether it be a happy or a sad feeling.
This time around, it's not something happy or sad but more of frustrated. My mother-in-law recently blew up because we were hoping to take a loan for our growing business. She was furious because we've been spending so much for the house that we've been renovating for the past month.
To your knowledge, we are renovating the very old and non-functional toilet and bathroom and the cheaply made dirty kitchen. In it's literal sense, it is very dirty. Imagine housing rats and roaches in an open kitchen. It's where we cook and prepare our food. If we get to leave food in this place, we have to expect mess and mouse bites thereby wasting food and yes, the dirty place of preparing food.
The house that we currently live in also serves as a transient home for tourists who are looking for a cheap place to stay. And when we have guests in the house, it is a pain in the ass when preparing food because it's as if we have to compete with the guests on who to prepare the food first. And that we have to live with using an old and ugly toilet while guests who pay are using nice toilets with water heater.
Imagine me so pissed off thinking about this. That because of money, we are sacrificing our own convenience and own comfort just for a few bucks.
I may not have lived as a rich person but my parents raised us in always prioritizing development of a home where you are comfortable and happy.
My mother is a civil engineer and she has made our home orderly, functional and comfortable. Until her death bed, she has nonstop made renovations in the house. Every renovation made is never cheap. She always aims for good quality. That is why we spend money the way we were raised.
It is way better to make a beautiful home than to show to the world through social media a beautiful lifestyle while compromising the place you go home to everyday. We wanted to build a home where we can comfortably invite friends and family over without always having to explain to people that we are still "saving" for funds to renovate the house. Or to always send them to the nice toilet upstairs to avoid them judging our ugly toilet near the dining area.
I would just like to honestly say that I am so frustrated of someone's advise for us to STOP the house renovation. As if we asked money from them for the renovation. We have worked hard for everything we have achieved.
Not to brag but my husband has finished his master's degree (with a little help from them from the 1st semester of the 1st year), opened our growing business, and made a lot of renovations in this house. With my mom's work benefits and money from bonuses at work and salaries.
We did not come asking people for money. I took loans for additional capital, funds and other expenses we make. I came from a family that prioritizes quality especially with homes. And I will not allow myself to live in a place permanently that is not even at par with the home I've been used to.
Mangangarap na nga lang, hindi ko pa taasan samantalang kaya naman? Ang hirap sa mga tao akala eh nasa kanila na lahat ng wisdom sa mundo. Allow others to learn in their own ways.
Or gusto niyo low quality yung ipagawa tapos araw-araw akong masstress kasi hindi pulido yung trabaho.

New Fiction 2024 - September
"The Cold Embrace" by Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1860)
To ghost, to suffer, to feel her hands.
"The Love Letter" by Jack Finney (1959)
We should be so lucky to have even a single letter to our name.
"Doggy-Dog World" by Hilary Leichter (2020)
We are what we want what we are what we want.
My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite (2018)
Not the horror story I expected, but rather a darkly comedic look at Nigerian society, and really society at large and the expectations and privileges we are afforded. The narrator had a particular approach to life that will click with anyone who can't let that mote of dust rest in peace.
Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata & trans. Ginny Tapley Takemori (2016)
We should all be so lucky as to find our own convenience store.
Dinotopia: A Land Apart from Time by James Gurney (1992)
Dinosaurs and humans create a wondrous socialist utopia, accompanied by gorgeous art. Also some pleistocene mammals for good measure.
Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu (1872)
The Austrian countryside is a gothic teenage wasteland.
Dead Space by Kali Wallace (2021)
You solve A.I. crimes, what do you get? A prosthetic shoulder and deeper in debt.
Allegiance in Exile by David R. George III (2013)
Allegiance in Exile is a bit scattered in the plot but they have a really cool and subtle reveal near the end. It's also interesting to hang out with Kirk as the five-year mission comes to a close. Who are you, who am I, when the thing is done and the future awaits?
The Baby-sitter by R.L. Stine (1989)
Things move along predictably and then WHOA he really ratchets up the horror at the end, particularly for a book targeted at young teens. As the advertisement at the end of the book states, nobody scares 'em like R.L. Stine.
Be Afraid — Be Very Afraid! by R.L. Stine (1999)
Aw R.L., you had me going! It's a strange format at first, then it starts to get intriguing, but then the page count limit rears its head and the story wraps up way too blithely.
The Curse of the Creeping Coffin by R.L. Stine (1996)
Doesn't hit the same wacky highs as the previous entry, but the myriad ghost adventures won me over in the end.
"Under the Floorboards" by Emily Carroll (2012)
It's all fun and games until you and you can't work it out.
"Nightfall" by Bill DuBay & Bernie Wrightson (1977)
Who else would it be at this time of night?
"Monster War" by Joy Chin, Christopher Golden, Tom Sniegoski, Vitor Ishimura, Scott Kester, Trroy Peteri (2005)
Lots of cooks in this kitchen, ingredients in this stew. The monster mash is more interesting than the IP side of the dish.
"The wind carries your last cry away" by avi (2024)
And at long last only the hills will know.
A Guest in the House by Emily Carroll (2023)
It doesn't matter if you see what you think you saw. It's there, waiting for you.
Frankenstein: Junji Ito Story Collection by Junji Ito (2018)
Read it for Frankenstein, stay for the strange tales of Oshikiri and his poorly secured house.
Frankenstein 2000 dev. Peter Fothergill (1985)
Only vaguely related to Frankenstein but such a creative collection of levels that it doesn't matter, they're still great.
Castle Frankenstein dev. Epic Software (1984)
Oh, sweet forgiving parser and high contrast colors. With those basics out of the way, this is a text adventure game that can actually be enjoyed.
The Crow dir. Rupert Sanders (2024)
The look of a crow but the heart of a checklist.
1992 dir. Ariel Vromen (2024)
Couldn't decide between the backdrop or the foreground.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dir. Tim Burton (2024)
Just hang in there for the finale.
The Front Room dir. Max Eggers & Sam Eggers (2024)
You're here for Kathryn Hunter.
Häxan dir. Benjamin Christensen (1922)
Now that's something. It presaged true crime television with live reenactments.
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning dir. Danny Steinmann (1985)
I guess you have to try and get away.
The Critic dir. Anand Tucker (2024)
Delightfully devilish, Sir Ian.
Paranormal Activity dir. Oren Peli (2007)
Whoa that's a slow simmer with a spicy kick.
Speak No Evil dir. James Watkins (2024)
I suppose, but the ending is lacking and we all know it.
The Killer's Game dir. J. J. Perry (2024)
I wish I could be there but I fell overboard early on.
Vampyr dir. Carl Theodor Dreyer (1932)
Not quite the classic vampirism I crave.
November dir. Rainer Sarnet (2017)
Listen, gardening tool servants possessed by demons.
Crimson Peak dir. Guillermo del Toro (2015)
Looks pretty!
Whiplash dir. Damien Chazelle (2014)
JK Simmons is too good at being the worst.
The Substance dir. Coralie Fargeat (2024)
I too made noises of discomfort for the duration.
Never Let Go dir. Alexandre Aja (2024)
On the edge of something, but never at the heart of it.
The Others dir. Alejandro Amenábar (2001)
A slow and perhaps predictable build to the sublime.
The Purge dir. James DeMonaco (2013)
We're not supposed to want more.
Wolfs dir. Jon Watts (2024)
The classic fun of assassination friends.
Bagman dir. Colm McCarthy (2024)
Just creepy enough to getcha.
Azrael dir. E.L. Katz (2024)
Needs a survival horror video game stat.
The Wild Robot dir. Chris Sanders (2024)
Gorgeous scenery and heartfelt robot moments my beloved.
Megalopolis dir. Francis Ford Coppola (2024)
Should I go and take a classics class again?
Rosemary's Baby dir. Roman Polanski (1968)
I waited for the twist and its arrival was so subtle that it made me stop and think about where I was.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers dir. Philip Kaufman (1978)
We lost something when we stopped employing the hushed and overlapping dialogue of the 70s. This remake is chock full of that and running scenes with with very audible footsteps. But it's also creepy as heck and surprisingly fleshy.

Timeline of the Shinsengumi’s downfall - 1867
In November-December, events in Kyoto continued to develop in the most impetuous and extremely disadvantageous way for Shinsengumi. On November 10, “an unknown person appeared at Shinsengumi's headquarters, strikingly reminiscent of the former commander of the third unit, Saito Hajime, but certainly not him (because how can a person _return_ to an organization from which one cannot leave?). The unknown person introduced himself as Yamaguchi Jiro, expressed a desire to join Shinsengumi - and was immediately appointed ... the commander of the third unit - since this position had been vacant for four months already . (c) Entrecote The post was a little more vacant - since March, when Saito left Shinsengumi among 15 supporters of Ito Kashitaro, to become in his squad "among strangers". And now the returned "unknown" Yamaguchi Jiro announced that Ito was going to kill Kondo and Hijikata in order to seize power in the detachment and use Shinsengumi to serve the emperor. Or, in case of failure, burn down Shinsengumi 's barracks and kill everyone. The execution of this grandiose plan was scheduled for the 20th of November. Hijikata immediately reported everything to the Aizu clan and made a rational proposal - to attack Ito's headquarters in Goryoeji himself at night, with guns and rifles. Kondo rejected this method, and decided to go the other way. Ironically, on the same day, Ito asked the commander to provide him with money to spy on the Choshu clan. And the kind Kondo even agreed to give him this money, but a little later And soon another unforeseen, but quite expected circumstance arose. In the evening of November 15 Sakamoto Ryoma was killed at the Omi-ya hotel. His existence prevented many people from living in peace, so they still cannot decide exactly who ordered his murder. It is only known that the performers were members of the Mimawarigumi - direct colleagues of the Shinsengumi in the service of the shogunate. But suspicion fell on Shinsengumi , especially since there was evidence at the crime scene - a forgotten geta and a scabbard, which Ito's people later identified as belonging to Harada Sanosuke. But Harada could not be there that evening, because he was with Kondo, for which there was confirmation. Interestingly, two days before this murder, Ito came to Ryoma to warn him of the danger, not suspecting that he himself had very little time left to live ... 18 November, Kondo invited Ito to the house of his mistress Miyuki for the transfer of the promised funds. He accepted the invitation, and he appeared alone and without protection. Kondo didn't have any money (come back tomorrow, Ito-sensei!), But Hijikata, a snack and a lot of sake were there (again, there is no reason not to drink). Having given their guest a drink, the hospitable commanders let him go on all four sides - that is, straight to the ambush near Aburanokoji, where Oishi Kuwajiro, Miyagawa Nobukichi and two or three others, possibly Saito, were waiting for him. Ito inflicted a mortal wound by "Hitokiri Kuwajiro", hitting him in the throat with a spear (although in some places it is written that after that Ito still managed to do seppuku). The body was dragged to the intersection and began to wait for people from Ito's detachment to come for it. They did not keep themselves waiting long and appeared in the morning in the amount of 7 people. The ambush outnumbered them by almost five times. Three of Ito's men (including Todo Heisuke) were killed, and four (including Kano Washio and Ito's brother Suzuki Mikisaburo) escaped.
On November 19,
the Aizu clan donated 20 ryos for the funeral of Ito and three of his supporters.
And on the same day, Shinsengumi was officially charged with the murder of Sakamoto Ryoma.
On November 22,
Nagai Naoyuki summoned Kondo for questioning about his involvement in Ryoma's murder. Naturally, Kondo argued that the Shinsengumi had nothing to do with this, after which they were left alone for a while.
On December 2,
Hijikata bought protective gloves (or bracers) for kenjutsu. Apparently, for public money, because the record of this acquisition is in the Shinsengumi book of income and expenses for the end of 1867-beginning of 1868, which by some miracle survived.
7 december,
An incident took place at the Tenman-ya hotel, where 7 people from Shinsengumi were guarding Miura Kyutaro from the Kii clan, one of the suspects in organizing the murder of Ryoma. Miura feared revenge from Ryoma's followers, even though he was innocent. And it was not in vain that he was afraid. On the evening of December 7, extremely unfriendly citizens rushed to the second floor of Tenman-ya, where Miura and his guards sat drinking, did not touch anyone.
This story is described
by Hillsborough, by Entrecote (On Traffic Rules and Dramatic Effects) and even from the words of Saito Hajime (
from here): We didn't know when the enemy would appear, so we sat and drank in armor. But it became too hot for me, and the armor prevented me from moving, so I tried to slowly remove it. I tried to take off the glove, but I couldn't. She sat too tightly. Finally, I gave up this business and again took the cup - and at that moment the enemy broke into the room. They thought they were acting cleverly - there are a lot of them, there is not enough light, the room is small. And while I was cutting there, I felt that I was hit a couple of times, but there was no pain, and I continued to fight. Then I heard someone shouting: “There is something on it. I can't cut it. Stab him! " "Realized, nerd," I think. "Well, wait ..." The battle ended literally in a few seconds - there were three or four survivors by the time that samurai shouted. Because of this armor, I was not really hooked. Useful thing. I hear that you are no longer fighting with the old techniques of well-planned battle. Right. In a real dump it is impossible to plan - I will take this this way, and the other that way. All that you really can do is act according to the situation, and when you find that the enemy is on the ground, and not you, rejoice that you were lucky, and not him. If you can move quickly with the sword, you are already good. The outcome of the landfill is decided by speed. In this case, in Tenman-ya, I did not know how and where I would lay the next enemy. I didn't even notice how many there were.
There were 16 opponents against seven Shinsengumi men: Saito Hajime, Oishi Kuwajiro, Miyagawa Nobukichi, Nakamura Kojiro, Nakajo Tsunehachiro, Umedo Katsunosin, Funazo Kamataro (?).
Miura managed to escape, two from Shinsengumi were killed (Miyagawa and Funazo), three were injured, including Saito.
December 8 - In the book of income and expenses, it appears that on this day the Shinsengumi borrowed 4,000 ryos from 10 wealthy merchants (400 ryo from 10 people). There is even a written confirmation that this fact took place:
IOU 1. I hereby confirm that I borrow 400 ryos at 4% monthly. Until the end of May next year, I undertake to return this amount together with interest. 12th month of 3rd year of Keio
Hijikata Toshizo (signed and stamped)
I hereby confirm commitments under this loan.
Kondo Isami (signed and stamped)
This receipt is addressed to a certain Osaka merchant named the Siege of Sakubei. It looks like 9 others were written in the same image and likeness. The 4th year of the hare is according to the 120-year cycle of the Chinese calendar. Added for clarity, because all sorts of official "Keio" were apparently somehow unusual)) And after 3 days (December 11) Shinsengumi returned back more than half of the debt - 3000 ryos. For what purpose they generally took this money and where did the remaining 1000 ryos go, history is silent. 9th December, an official decree was issued on the restoration of the monarchy. There have been significant changes in government. At the same time, the question arose about the abolition of Shinsengumi - they were again charged with the murder of Ryoma, the incident at Abura-no-koji, and so on and so forth. But for a start, we decided to limit ourselves to only changing the name. From now on, it was decided to call Shinsengumi "Xingyu: gekitai" - "new partisan detachment" or "new sabotage group")) On December 12, Shinsengumi abandoned this new stupid name. On the same day, the shogun departed from Kyoto for Osaka. On December 13, the Kii clan granted Kondo Isami 42 ryo as condolences for the death of his cousin, Miyagawa Nobukichi, who died in Tenman-ya. On December 14, Shinsengumi accompanied Nagai Naoyuki somewhere. December 16, The Shinsengumi were sent to Fushimi, where they were housed in the building of the city magistrate. They were ordered to patrol the city, and on the same day they strangled (!) Some Satsuma spy. On December 18, exactly one month after the death of their sensei, Ito's unbeaten supporters set out to kill Kondo. To this end, three people came to the house of his mistress in the morning: Abe Juro, Utsumi Jiro and Savara (?) Taro. But Kondo was not there - he went to the council of war at Nijo Castle, where he was summoned by Nagai Naoyuki. But Okita was sick. He was attacked. What happened there, I do not know, but none of the participants in this incident was injured. In the evening, the same Abe and his other company ambushed on the road to Fushimi and shot Kondo in the right shoulder as he was returning from Kyoto. Kondo was on horseback, so he quickly rushed away from there, and two of his escorts were killed. On December 20, Kondo received 20 ryos from the Aizu clan as a sign of sympathy, and together with Okita went to Osaka for treatment. And Hijikata, during this difficult period, assumed command of the detachment, which at that time had 157 people.

Summary | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Winter in Japan was much colder than in Pindorama. Everything was covered in white, and snow fell every other day. Asa was enchanted. The coldest she'd felt was when she escorted Queen Yeba to the Andes for a secret meeting among allies.
Now, Asa lived in a traditional Japanese home currently covered in snow. Her very own little winter wonderland. The house was quite large, having many rooms and accommodations. Her favorite part was the forest that surrounded it. Though the hot springs in her backyard were a strong second.
Asa had been delighted when she learned of the house's possession of one. In Pindorama, there was something similar: Houses at the foot of the Great Peak Mountain often had small lakes in their backyards. The waters were cold, but they were known for being refreshing to those that traveled through the dense humid Amazon jungle.
Perhaps it could be her absolute favorite place right now.
Asa sat in the hot springs, as naked as the day she was born. Crystal-like snowflakes fell from the heavens as she leaned back with her mouth open to catch them. She giggled at the contrast of temperatures in her mouth.
"Madam," The housekeeper, Mrs. Ito, walked out of the house. Her beautiful smile flashed as she bowed.
"Mrs. Ito, please," Asa blushed, "Call me Asa, I insist!" She submerged, leaving her nose and up above the surface.
"Right, Asa," She older woman smiled, "The headmaster and some teachers have arrived for dinner," Mrs. Ito clapped excitedly.
"Splendid!" Asa rose from the hot water and beamed, "Please, tell them to come to enjoy the hot springs!" She asked, already moving around and making sure everything looked presentable.
"Right away, Asa! I'll provide them with the robes and slippers," Mrs. Ito bowed again and disappeared into the house.
"This will be a fine opportunity to assess how pro-commission these coworkers of mine are," Asa mumbled to herself as she retied her hair in place.
The guests arrived: a small animal-like man, a tall dark-haired man, an elderly woman, and two blonde men. Beaming, Asa greeted them and invited them in. They shed their towels or robes and entered the spacey private onsen.
The guests introduced themselves, bowing their heads slightly.
Keigo had been warry of the invitation sent by the newcomer. She had her own house near the campus, and it was apparently luxurious. He didn't want to meet the ice queen Aizawa had described, much less some spoiled royal brat.
But even he had to admit the house was gorgeous. The residential complex was styled after the Edo Period, akin to high-ranked samurai living quarters. And at the very back, there was a private onsen where "Asa" was waiting for them.
To say Keigo was surprised at the foreigner's invite was an understatement. But he was beyond blown away by the beauty of the onsen in her backyard. The hot spring was surrounded by boulders of all shapes and sizes. Smaller stones formed a pathway to the spring, and it was decorated with all sorts of plants on either side. In the far left corner of the spring was a beautiful fountain cascading down into the steaming waters.
Asa waved them over. Keigo felt himself blush as he almost stumbled when he saw her: She was breathtaking. Her dark hair was in a tight bun, leaving her features visible. Her copper skin contrasted ethereally with her icy blue eyes. Sadly, her wings weren't out, and Keigo felt himself kind of wishing they were.
"Welcome!" Asa's accent as she spoke Japanese was only slightly noticeable. She smiled elegantly, inviting them in.
"Hello, miss Asa," Nezu greeted in English. He offered his hand, or paw, for her to shake. She took it gracefully. Keigo noticed her movements were reminiscent of a ballerina. But to him, it just meant she was probably deadlier than she looked.
"I am Nezu, headmaster of UA High. These are my coworkers Shota Aizawa, Hizashi Yamada, Chiyo Shuzenji, and Keigo," Nezu pointed to each one of them. Asa nodded in understanding.
"It is customary here to address new acquaintances by their family name, correct?" She asked in Japanese, tilting her head.
"Quite right, miss Asa," Nezu nodded, almost dropping the towel on his head, "But you can call me Nezu." He was grateful she understood and spoke Japanese. Using his limited English would have made communicating hard.
"If it is alright with you, sir," Asa offered a polite smile, "I'd rather call you Headmaster or sir," her tone was respectful, and her smile never wavered.
"Of course!" Nezu laughed lightly, "Whatever makes you comfortable." Asa nodded, then turned to Keigo and the others.
"Thank you for welcoming me into your school. I hope we can work well together and prepare great champions." Asa bowed her head at the end of her mini-speech.
"You are adorable, miss Asa!" Recovery Girl got closer to the woman and squeezed her cheeks. "You'll make a fine addition to our team." She patted Asa on the shoulder.
"Thank you very much!" Asa grinned widely, giggling quietly. Her smiles and words seemed genuine enough, but Keigo felt flustered for some reason. It was like something about Asa that he couldn't quite grasp, yet it made him uncomfortable.
"Mr. Aizawa, Mr. Yamada, Mr. Keigo, thank you for coming. I understand it must be strange to have a foreign coworker joining under these circumstances. I'll try my best to help in any way I can." She bowed once again.
Keigo was irked. She was too polite. Too smiley. Too nice. There had to be something wrong with her. Something she was hiding. And Keigo was going to find out what it was.
"I assure you my mission is to work with you and for you," Asa declared, interrupting Keigo's thoughts. He looked up to see her staring straight at him.
"Uh, right. Good." He nodded stiffly. Maybe his scowling wasn't as subtle as he thought it was.
The conversation continued to flow amongst them, but Keigo tried his best to stay out of it. After a few more minutes, Mrs. Ito called them for dinner.
The dining room was beautiful. The dark wooden walls and tiles contrasted gracefully with the lighter-colored furniture. The food was laid out on a table in the center of the room. Soon, everyone had taken a seat on flowery-patterned cushions on the floor.
Dinner flew by with more chit-chatting and laughs. Asa was a natural diplomat: Everything she said and did was deliberate, showing her guests how much she valued their company. Even Aizawa seemed to be more at ease than usual, and Hizashi laughed delightedly at Asa's stories. Nezu and Recovery Girl were reminiscing, telling her about childhood memories attached to the dishes she had prepared.
After they all finished eating, Asa took them to walk around the garden. It was kept safe from the harsh winter by a glass covering and its own heating system.
"Some of these species come from Pindorama. I had some sent over since they're used in some of our religious rituals and for healing." Asa walked ahead of them, explaining what each plant was and how it's used.
"Ah, I'm sorry! This is probably boring," She laughed lightly, her eyes turning to half-moons. Keigo felt himself blush.
"Not at all," He blurted out. This was the first time he'd actually spoken. The others turned to look at him in astonishment. Keigo cleared his throat.
"Oh, thank you," Her smile seemed softer this time.
Shortly after the walk in the garden, Asa sensed it was probably time to see her guests off. Recovery Girl was getting too cold, and Aizawa's state was worsening.
"What if I helped with that a bit?" Asa offered, seeing Aizawa's pained expression.
Hesitantly, Aizawa nodded. Asa carefully removed the long coat she had worn over her clothes for the short trek. Carefully, she helped Aizawa onto a bench between two tall trees. She knelt beside him on the ground and gingerly placed her hand over his recovering leg.
"I'm not sure if you'll feel any side effects," She frowned, "So, please tell me if it's too much," She took a deep breath.
Soon, a strange aura began encircling them. Keigo watched in amazement as her wings ripped through her clothes. It tore through the layers she wore, exposing her back to the cold air.
Asa's lips moved, but no sound came out. Yet, all of them felt a strange feeling of comfort. The air suddenly became warmer. Aizawa's leg seemed to be glowing, causing the man's eyes to widen.
The young woman stood up, removing her hand from his leg. She stood up and sighed.
"I hope that helps a little," Asa offered Aizawa a hand. He took it and stood up, his leg feeling more stable than before.
"It does," Aizawa smiled to everyone's surprise, "Thank you, Asa!"
"It was my pleasure, Mr. Aizawa," She bowed slightly.
They left after that, bidding her cheerful goodbyes and promising to see her at work soon.
Keigo couldn't sleep that night. He'd never been so impressed by someone's quirk. His first reaction had always been to analyze and determine if they presented a threat to him or not. Yet, now, every time he closed his eyes to try and sleep, he'd picture her wings, those gorgeous, majestic, white wings. Hell, he still felt the aftershocks of her quirk. It didn't just heal Aizawa's pain; it felt like it was healing his own soul and-
Wait a minute.
Her quirk was a healing quirk. It healed wounds, cuts, bruises, pain. Not feelings or emotions. Or did it?
Keigo stood up from his bed, running to his desk to go over the files he'd received on Asa. They contained classified information about her quirk's history, which the queen herself had. How he got them wasn't relevant. Keigo was sure they never mentioned any other form of healing in the description. But maybe, just maybe, he'd missed it in the report.
Asa of Pindorama's Quirk Description
Type: Healing.
Pros and cons: Can heal open and scarred wounds, bones, muscles, veins, etc. The subject's wings are exposed every time the quirk is activated, which can cause unwanted attention.
How: Classified.
Keigo read through every little detail. He skimmed every page and every folder, taking notes of the information he read. But, he found nothing about the strange feeling of comfort and warmness she'd made the others feel.
Could it be a side effect? If so, why wasn't it included in the files?
What was Asa of Pindorama hiding behind those icy blue eyes?
One thing was certain: She wasn't just a simple healer.
In the onsen, Keigo noticed that her body was littered with scars. Some were too big to have been accidents or minor injuries. It was almost like her skin held war stories from how marked it was. Could it be she was tortured? Or maybe she was a soldier or spy of some sort. That seemed to match his theory more.
If Asa was really the enemy, then she'd have to be an excellent spy to have infiltrated the system. She even got a recommendation letter from the queen herself! What more proof was there that she wasn't a mere healer?
The ex-pro hero wrote down all of his observations. He wrote about the scars, the callouses on her hands, the polished manners that were almost too perfect, and every other information he thought was relevant. He wrote on an old notebook he had lying around his new room.
Follow the events of March, Keigo sold his old house and bought a smaller apartment. After he was hired by Nezu, he sold that apartment and settled for an even smaller one near UA High. But he still had most of his belongings; they were just piling up in random corners around his apartment.
Maybe he needed to focus on cleaning his place.
Yeah. Keigo was going to clean up and donate as many things as he could. Then, and only then, would he start focusing on his new "mission": Expose Asa of Pindorama as an enemy spy.
Asa sighed in relief once they were out of sight. Healing Aizawa's leg took a toll on her. She had meant to lessen the pain only, but she ended up using too much power and fully healed it. Hopefully, he wouldn't notice it soon. Asa wasn't sure how she would explain not being able to control her quirk.
She helped Mrs. Ito clear the dining room and wash the dishes. After that, she went straight back to the onsen. Asa let her body practically melt into the hot water, feeling her tensed muscles relax. Asa had heard of the healing properties of onsens. She'd openly admit to having felt ten times better after spending time immersed in the hot springs. Yet, she couldn't help but replaying the evening.
Hours later, Asa was still submerged in the hot waters of the onsen. Something was off about Headmaster Nezu and Keigo. And she would get to the bottom of it.
The way Keigo seemed overly suspicious and cautious bothered Asa. Sure, she knew they wouldn't all warm up instantly to her. Keigo, however, seemed wearier than the rest. Asa couldn't have one of them suspecting her true intentions already. No, she'd have to deal with him personally.
From what she could gather on intel and data, Keigo was formerly known as the Winged Hero, Hawks. Whatever happened all those months ago made him retire. Of course, he wasn't the only one, but he was the youngest of the newly retired heroes.
Yet, what made him stand out to Asa was his affiliations. Keigo had been brought up by the HPSC. He was taken in by them when his father was caught by Endeavor. Keigo's mother was in no state to take care of him, so the organization took it upon themselves to raise Keigo Takami.
Asa believed his connection to the agency could be dangerous to the mission. She'd have Keigo watched, just in case.
Nezu was a whole different story. He was intelligent, clearly a capable teacher and headmaster. But Asa's instincts screamed the minute he entered her home. If she hadn't controlled herself, his head would've rolled right then and there.
Asa lifted her wet hands to her temples, massaging them lightly. She groaned in annoyance.
This was becoming unnecessarily complicated.

Remnant of the Past
As Naga City flourished along with progress, we only have few historical edifices left. The sad part is that, most of them seemed to have been wiped out already. We only have our monuments and churches left as out remnant of the past. There are still few ancestral houses preserved but those blended in the background as well.
Last year, I heard that the City Government of Naga and the Nueva Caceres Heritage Movement, Inc. (NCHMI) recognized another one of the few remaining historical edifices in the city located within the vicinity of the Ramon Abella Diaz (RAD) Building along the Panganiban Drive corner Blumentritt Street near the bridge going downtown Centro.
This arch is said to be the only remnant of the historic mansion of Don Mariano Abella who was a member of the Propaganda Movement and Provincial Governor during the early years of the American Regime. Moreover, the residential building was also said to be built in the late 19th century and became an important hub of prominent guests especially in the early years of American rule when Abella assumed post as a Provincial Governor.
Furthermore, the residential building was also occupied by the Japanese as their outpost to protect the bridge against the composite guerilla forces on the other side of the river and eventually evacuated after fighting for three days which caused a lot of damaged.
Currently, this is the state of the edifice. The arch was able to withstand the ravages of time and became a witnessed the historical journey of Naga towards modernization and progress. I am glad that the descendants of the Abella family took the initiative to be able to restore and preserved this site. I hope the City Government of Naga will continue to acknowledge and preserve the remaining remnants of the past in the city.
Since today is February 29, it is leap year. This only happens every 5 years. I decided to visit this arch for some fangirling reasons as well. Don’t judge me. I am far away from Arch of the Centuries in UST pero pwede na ata ito. Madam Olivia, asan ka na? Handa na po ako maitulak pabalik sa 1892 at isulat ang kwento sa ikaapat na pagkakataon.

Houseguest Chapter Ten
FFN II AO3
Summary: Danger follows Ito to Tony's doorstep.
Chapter Ten: Uninvited Guests
The distraction couldn't have come at a better time. He hadn't been prepared for a discussion about Afghanistan, Obadiah, or the lives lost because the man that had betrayed his trust. It had made him who he was, but there were still nights he still woke to the sounds of men and women shouting, screaming, and then it all went deathly quiet. He always jolted awake after what felt like an eternity alone in the darkness there, the memories difficult to shake off.
Tony's movements were slow but mostly steady. He could practically feel Rogers behind him, ready to catch him if his footing slipped. It didn't, though, and he hoped he looked steady as he circled around to where Jim Ito stood in his foyer. The older man removed the cap he was wearing to reveal signs that he'd been with the escort team. The man really didn't sleep. His dark gaze snapped over to Tony. "I don't want to hear it, Stark."
The younger man slammed to a stop. "You get checked for a concussion? Because you just waltzed into my house in the middle of the night."
"And I don't think for a second you don't have the information on what happened."
Tony's expression darkened. "Three dead, last I heard."
"And one of my guys is critical in the ER."
"And Mira?" Steve asked, pulling both attentions back to him, but Tony didn't miss the look in Ito's eyes. Something had happened. Something that hadn't hit the systems JARVIS had access to.
Ito pulled in a breath. "Gone."
"Dead?" Cap pressed, though if Tony had to put money on it he'd have bet that Rogers didn't believe that anymore than he did. Not with that look Ito was giving them.
"No. She escaped." He set his jaw. "She shouldn't have been able to from where that blast went off. We haven't been able to figure out how or what…"
Tony snorted. "Someone should have warned you how dangerous situations like this can get. Oh wait. I did."
"See, that's what I meant," Ito sniped back.
"Hey."
Tony's head snapped around at the firm word and he regretted the movement instantly. Steve's icy blue gaze was fixed on the police captain though. "What exactly are you asking for, Captain Ito?"
The older man ducked his head ever so slightly, that proud gaze of his finding the floor. Finally, he looked to Tony, squaring his shoulders and tilting his chin up again. "You were right."
Tony leaned in, making a show of cupping his hand to his ear. "Didn't quite catch that, Jim. Come again?"
"Tony," Cap grumbled and his tone pulled a satisfied smirk from the injured man.
Ito's gaze snapped to him and he said louder, more firmly, "You were right. We have no idea how to handle a threat like this."
And that was all he needed. "Okay. Bring me up to speed."
_____________
He had hoped that Ito was just there for information, maybe some advice on how to approach the situation and re-capture their escaped prisoner, but no. Steve couldn't be that lucky and Tony couldn't be that reasonable. It was still the earliest hours of the morning and he was still injured, but that didn't seem to matter. He barrelled ahead as fast as he was capable of going. He paced the length of the living room, nervous energy rolling off of him in waves, even as Steve watched him favour his injured foot. Every movement was stiff, slow, but he kept going, almost like he thought he would eventually outrun the crash on the other side. It would come. Steve had seen how hard it hit when Tony had come back the night before. It had been a strong reminder just how human the man inside the suit was. This whole trip had been.
Tony loosed a clipped, wincing breath. "Okay. So run it past me again? She was in the van that exploded?"
Ito looked annoyed. "Yes."
"Same one that the other cops died in?"
"And one's in critical condition, yes."
The injured Avenger stopped his pacing, leaning back and turning his dark gaze up at the ceiling as he thought. Steve could practically see him putting pieces of the fractured puzzle together, pulling them apart again, and repositioning. "And your car was -"
"In front. She was in the back of the vehicle. The driver is the one in the hospital."
Tony's eyes popped open. "But the guy in front of her died?"
"He was caught by the brunt of the blast," Ito answered hesitantly, as if seeing where it was going. Steve did too, and he didn't like it.
"So it came from that side? Same one Mira was on?"
"You're getting at something. Wanna share it?" Steve grumbled.
"Just that if the blast came from that side of the vehicle - from inside the vehicle - Mira shouldn't have survived." He turned back to Ito. "Are you sure she did?"
"I know the man that saw her. He wouldn't make that up."
Tony's lips twitched downward. "I'm not saying he did…"
Ito straightened from where he sat on the couch, his bruised features stretching thin in the dim lights that surrounded the three men. "It's why I'm here. She shouldn't have walked away. Shouldn't have been able to walk away from it, but she did."
"You think she's enhanced?" Steve asked quietly, drawing Ito's gaze.
"Enhanced?"
"Like him," Tony answered, motioning to Steve. "Something outside of nature enhancing physical limits of a human being in a permanent way.."
Ito nodded, his movement stiff. "I should have seen something coming. She was… Calm. No. Confident. I thought she was arrogant, but obviously she knew something I didn't. What could have caused this?"
Tony finally took a hard seat in a chair, leaning against his knees and despite the lack of momentum he hadn't lost any of his nervous energy. "I can't say for sure, but there was a lot of alien tech after New York. My people didn't get ahold of all of it, I know, even if we tried. If she did, and if she's been experimenting with it…"
"Holy shit," Steve breathed and Tony looked up at him, a little startled by the curse that had escaped him. Let him be. It seemed to be warranted.
"Yeah."
"Worse case scenario?" Ito pushed, and Tony shook his head.
"There's no telling. We could be dealing with someone that has a lot of tech at her disposal or just enough to make her whatever she is. Until we -" A pulse ripped through the floor of the mansion, drawing their attention to the jolt.
"Earthquake?" Ito offered.
Steve's eyes narrowed dangerously. "That's not an earthquake."
Tony was on his feet again. "J, whatcha got?"
"There appears to have been a localized explosion near the entrance of the garage, sir. We've lost access to camera number eight."
"Anything in any of the surrounding cameras? The sensors?"
Steve watched him move towards the living room windows that overlooked the ocean, blond brows drawing together as he tried to figure out why. Then the images appeared across the glass: camera feeds and a map of the house - bigger than Steve had even realised, now that he saw an aerial view of it - with a heat signature at the entrance of the garage burning far too hot for any normal human. Tony tilted his head, studying it.
Another tremor shook the floor hard enough for something in the adjacent room to slip from its shelf, the sound of shattering glass throwing Steve into fight mode. Tony's map lit up at the garage entrance and at a beam close to it.
"What does that mean?" Ito demanded.
Tony reached for the glass, his fingers guiding the map in deeper, readings expanding out from it. "I had three archetectual engineers tell me a house couldn't be built here that was stable enough to withstand the earthquakes in the area. I proved them wrong, but…" He leaned in, looking closely at something. "But it wasn't designed to withstand high impact explosions. She'll take the whole house down if I don't stop her."
"We," Steve corrected, drawing Tony's attention. "If we don't stop her."
Tony looked to him, those dark eyes questioning for just a moment, before he offered a quick nod of acceptance. Another jolt shook the floor and he started a quick limp towards the stairs leading down to his lab. "Get Ito his car and get him out of here. I'll meet you outside."
"Where are you going?"
The dark haired man quirked a smile that reminded Steve of his father more than ever. "I'm gonna get dressed up and greet our guest."
Steve swallowed his protest as watched Tony start for the stairs down to his lab and his waiting suits.
"You wanna grab some shoes, Captain?"
Blue eyes blinked hard, following Ito's gaze down to his bare feet. At least he'd had the sense to put a pair of jeans on when he'd come downstairs, but he hadn't exactly been prepared for a full-out battle. "I've got something a little more important."
_____________
There was nothing like a good, old-fashioned adrenaline spike to push back the drowsy-sick feeling that came with pain meds on an empty stomach. The threat of having a house fall out from under you was a good way to kick that into high gear.
"Sir, she has almost breached the garage door," JARVIS's voice rang out as Tony reached the bottom of the stairs.
"Fire up the Mark X then!" Tony shouted as he pushed through the glass door and into the lab. He half stumbled into the waiting suit and it close around him. Somehow, despite the looming danger just outside, he felt his nerves ease just a little inside the shell as the HUD jumped to life. "Let's go say hello."
He could feel the strain against his injuries as the suit lifted him up in the air, but the adrenaline shoved it towards the back of his mind well enough. "Open it up, J," he instructed and the large, secured door at the end of the ramp slid up. On the other side stood a part angry, part confused, and definitely enhanced Ellen Mira. The early readings that flashed across his screen were off the charts and there was something very wrong with her eyes.
Tony flew into her, the suit protecting him, but as he lifted her off the ground and away from his door he could feel the heat coming off of her. He didn't get very far before a blast ripped out from her, slamming into him, and he dropped her as he was thrown off to the side and into the brush along the side of his driveway. He hit hard, slumping down in a bush with a groan.
"You brought it here. The tech you took from me," her voice cut through his daze and he blinked hard to see Mira moving towards him with purpose.
"I mean, technically, you took it from me first." He started to push himself up to his feet, but another wave of energy pulsed out from her and drove him back.
"Take me to it and you I won't send you and your home crashing into the ocean."
Tony stared at her through his helmet, the suit taking readings off of the energy signature and calculations flashed across his screen. Okay. Her power readings were heavy duty, but he thought he had something that could contain her, at least temporarily. The problem was holding her off long enough to call Rhodey and get him to bring it to them. He needed time. "Fine."
That caught her off guard. "Just like that?"
"Well," he drawled out. "First…."
Mira stared at him, the word hanging between them for a long moment. Then another. Then another. She rolled her eyes, opening her mouth to comment when the sound of something spinning through the air, immediately followed by her own yelp as the red, white, and blue shield slammed into her back. She flew forward and over Tony and the brush behind him.
He picked himself up and looked to where Cap stood barefoot on his driveway. "We gotta work on timing that right. It just doesn't have the same punch if you have to wait."
Cap shrugged. "Looked like it had plenty of punch to me." A loud howl of anger drew both of their attention to the newly upright Mira. "So how are we planning to, uh…"
"Contain her? I got that covered. Just give me a minute."
Steve looked at him like he was going to demand more than that, but something - be it trust or understanding that he didn't have time to make those kinds of demands before their angry guest was back within punching distance - pulled him back around to the impending fight and gave Tony the moment he needed to switch over to internal comms. "J, get me Rhodey."
There was a long moment, a couple of rings, and finally an irritable answer. "No, I haven't got anything new for you yet. Aren't you supposed to be resting?"
"Where are you?" A map flashed on his screen. "Nevermind. Got you. I need you to turn around and go to the old labs at the edge of Malibu."
"The ones your dad opened in the 40's?"
"Yeah. I store some stuff there. I need you to bring me something. JARVIS' sending you the details."
"What are you -?"
Rhodey's question was cut off by Tony's shout of surprise as he was suddenly dragged back into the fight, Mira's eyes a strange and eerie colour. She reached towards him, fingers glowing, and he only barely dodged out of the way. "Woh! Gotta go, Rhodey. Call Ito for an escort to speed things up."
"Forget about me?" Mira asked, her smile dangerous.
Tony risked a glance past her to see Cap picking himself up. Dazed, but shaking it off. "How could I? You're trying to destroy my house and kill my friend." She lashed out, power whipping from her fingers and he raised his arm, a small shield expanding from the armor to deflect it. He could feel the reverberation all the way through it. Fantastic. Broken ribs, broken foot, why not add a broken arm to it too? He leveled the opposite gauntlet and the repulsor beam hit her square in the chest, sending her tumbling.
She wasn't down for long, though, and he and Steve wound in and around her to exchange blows and deflection. They took turns, moving in sync like they had in New York. They had completely different techniques and skillsets, but somehow they complimented each other. Where one weakness began, the other filled in for it. She was quick, though, and the tech she'd somehow implanted herself with was giving her an edge against even Iron Man and Captain America.
"I wanna know what's making her tick, JARVIS."
"Working on it, sir."
"Enough," Mira hissed and power burst out like a tidal wave, sending Tony skidding backward and his armor sparked dangerously from the damage the blow inflicted. Mira turned back to Cap. The first blow knocked his shield to the side and Tony saw the readings spike dangerously as she reached out and pressed her hand against his chest.
He watched it like it was in slow motion. The power surge, Steve's eyes widening, and then the jolt of energy that passed through him, tossing him back like a ragdoll that didn't get up.
Mira turned a satisfied look at Tony. "Next."

Notes: These boys really just can't catch a break.
Well, I finally finished up the writing on this, so theoretically it shouldn't be more than a week or so between updates. Two more chapters after this one, so hang on tight. It's always a wild ride with these two ;)
Next Time: Steve and Tony work together to try to contain Mira.

_________________________
¹Shichi-gatsu nanoka [七月七日].
The date was August 10, 1587, in the Gregorian calendar.
This day was also the Festival of Tanabata [七夕] (tanabata no sekku [七夕節句]: Festival of the Stars; Festival of the Weaver; and so forth), which celebrates the once-a-year meeting of the celestial deities Orihime [織姫] (the Weaver: the star Vega) and Hikoboshi [彦星] (the Cowherd: the star Altair). According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the Seventh Day of the Seventh Lunar Month. Tanabata is celebrated in all of the countries within the classical Chinese cultural sphere (including Korea, Japan, and Vietnam).
Because the idea is that the two stars meet across the Milky Way, it has been traditional (apparently since the time of Jōō) for the irori to be used on chakai given on this date, so that the host and the guests will be able to face each other across the ro.
²Saru-no-toki yori [申ノ時より].
There were twelve traditional hours in each day, though each was equivalent to two Western hours (i.e., 120 minutes) only on the equinoctes.
The Hour of the Monkey lasts roughly from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The chakai, therefore, began in the late afternoon.
³Yojō-han [四疊半].
This would have been the 4.5-mat room in Rikyū's official residence.
⁴Omuro-gosho [小室御所].
Rikyū has made a clerical error here: the title should be written Omuro-gosho [御室御所].
Omuro-gosho [御室御所] is another name for the Ninna-ji [仁和寺], the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon [真言] (True Word) Sect of Buddhism. And, when used as a personal epithet, as here, it refers to the Abbot of the Ninna-ji [仁和寺], who was an Imperial Prince (a custom that persisted until the end of the Edo period).
In this case, the sobriquet refers to Ninnaji-no-miya Shurihō shinnō [仁和寺宮守理法親王; 1558 ~ ?], a son of Prince Kunisuke (Fushimi-no-miya Kunisuke shinnō [伏見宮邦輔親王; 1513 ~ 1563], who was adopted by the Emperor Ōgimachi [正親町天皇; 1517 ~ 1593]. Prince Shurihō entered the Ninna-ji in Eiroku 8 [永禄八年] (1565), as a disciple of another Imperial Prince, Ninjo nyūdō shinnō [任助入道親王; 1525 ~ 1584].
⁵Konoe dono [近衛殿].
This was Lord Konoe Sakihisa [近衛前久; 1536 ~ 1612], a high court noble (he held the junior grade of the First Rank), who served as kanpaku [関白]*, Minister of the Left (sa-daijin [左大臣]), Chancellor (daijō-daijin [太政大臣]), and, after he left that office, he was further honored as jū-san-gū [准三宮]†.
Lord Sakihisa was close to both Oda Nobunaga and Hideyoshi -- Hideyoshi adopted Sakihisa's daughter Sakiko [前子; 1575 ~ 1630], who was given by him as a consort to the Emperor Go-Yōzei; she gave birth to the Emperor’s son, who became Emperor Go-Mizunoo.
Furthermore, in 1585, Lord Sakihisa (whose family represented one of the major branches of the ancient Fujiwara house) adopted Hideyoshi himself, which gave Hideyoshi the necessary entrée to become kanpaku in his turn. __________ *Chief civil adviser to the Emperor.
†An honorary rank meaning that Lord Sakihisa was accorded honors similar to those of the Great Empress Dowager (theoretically the Emperor's grandmother), the Emperess Dowager (in theory, the Emperor's mother), and the Empress (the Emperor's principal wife). The title translates “quazi-Three Empresses.”
⁶Ryōshitsu [良叱].
This refers to Ishibashi Ryōshitsu [石橋良叱; his dates of birth and death are not known], a machi-shū of Sakai, chajin, and one of Rikyū's sons-in-law (musume-muko [娘婿], the husband of one of Rikyū's daughters).
His name first appears in an entry dated to the Tenshō 10 in the Tsuda Sōkyū Chanoyu Nikki [津田宗及茶湯日記], when Ryōshitsu participated in a chakai together with Yamanoue Sōji and Tsuda Sōkyū.
While some scholars argue that Ryōshitsu must have been one of Rikyū's disciples, the Chajin Kei-den Zenshū [茶人係傳全集], published in Tenpō 8 [天保8年] (1837), states that he was initiated into the practice of chanoyu by Jōō (which seems more likely, since it appears that Rikyū married his daughters to men of his own generation). __________ *The title translates “the Complete Collected Transmitted Lineages of the Tea Masters.”
⁷Ryōmu [了無].
Unidentified. His name is also mentioned as being one of the guests at the previous chakai (which Rikyu hosted on the bank of the Kamo-gawa in the evening of the last day of the Sixth Month, after the conclusion of the lustration known as the Minazuki-barae [水無月祓]).
⁸Sho [初].
The shoza.
In terms of kane-wari, since this chakai began in the late afternoon, and continued until well after dark, the shoza should be yang, while the goza should be yin.
- The tokonoma contained the chabana, but suspended on the minor pillar attached to the outer wall (so that it would be illuminated by the fading light entering through the bokuseki-mado [墨跡窓] -- which would not reach the chabana if it were hung in the middle of the toko), so that the toko was chō [調];
- the room had the kama in the ro, and so was han [半];
- and the tana held the haboki (on the ten-ita), and the mizusashi and futaoki (on the ji-ita), and so was chō [調].
Chō + han + chō is han.
⁹Kago ni yūgao-no-hana [籠ニ 夕カホノ花].
The kago was probably the Katsura-kawa kago [桂川籠], so that the chabana could project away from the pillar on which it was suspended, and so catch the rays of the late afternoon sun coming in through the bokuseki-mado [墨跡窓]*.
The word yūgao [夕顔] refers to the flower of the calabash, a type of elongated bottle-gourd (Lagenaria siceraria var. hispida) -- whose simple, white flowers open in the late afternoon.
__________ *Which, in Rikyū's tearooms, was always located behind the shōkyaku's shoulder, just outside of the toko itself. The bokuseki-mado was on the west side of the room.
¹⁰Ito-me ko-gama jizai ni [絲目小釜 自在ニ].
This was another old Temmyō kama [古天妙釜], though likely repaired by Yojirō [與次郎], Rikyū's kama-shi [釜師].
It is not really such a "small kama" (it was probably made as a kiri-kake kama for use with a large kimen-buro on the o-chanoyu-dana*); but it is definitely much smaller than Jōō's large ito-me kama (which Rikyū also owned -- and used during the first three chakai documented in Book Two of the Nampō Roku).
The rather flat shape of the kama suggests that it was probably suspended low in the ro (so that the mouth was 6- or 7-bu below the level of the ro-buchi). This would have made the fire in the ro seem more distant, thus appearing “cooler” to the eyes of the guests.
The kama was suspended on a susu-dake jizai [煤竹自在] (a jizai made from a length of oil-stained bamboo, taken from the ceiling of a farmhouse kitchen), using Rikyū’s bronze kan and tsuru (above).
The word ito-me [絲目] means thread-lines. The pattern on the kama, then, can also be taken as an allusion to Orihime [織姫] (which means the Weaver-princess), one of the stars being celebrated on Tanabata. __________ *The kama was probably repaired -- with a rounded bottom -- on Rikyū's orders.
¹¹Sairō-dana [城樓棚].
This was another tana created by Tsuda Sōkyū. In this case, it was based directly on the fukuro-dana, and features the compartment for the mizusashi, the naka-dana, and (half of the) ten-ita.
I have found no photographs of this rarely seen tana. However, the Enkaku-ji does have one; and their Sairō-dana has panels on three sides of the compartment in which the mizusashi is placed (if I recall correctly, the panels have openwork, and they do not quite reach the tana above and below -- in other words, there is a roughly 1-sun wide opening above and below the panel; all three panels were the same, and, I believe, featured the design shown above, which is called a kōzama-sukashi [香挾間透])*.
According to Tanaka Senshō, this tana was created to represent the right half of the fukuro-dana. Consequently, it is supposed to be placed on the utensil mat so that it occupies its original place. When Sōkyū first made the Sairō-dana, the right side of the tana was placed on top of the right heri (just as Jōō said the fukuro-dana should be oriented†); but by the time of this chakai, since the fukuro-dana was now being centered on the utensil mat (at Hideyoshi’s behest), so this tana, too, is placed so that the left side touches the central kane‡. ___________ *While this does not match the way things are done today (even, it seems, by the Nampō-ryū), Kanshū o-shō-sama once told me that, if it is difficult to dip the water from the mizusashi if it is in the middle of the ji-ita (on account of the shape or size of the mizusashi), then the mizusashi should be lifted forward (so that the front edge of the foot is near the front of the shelf -- the way the mizusashi is moved forward when using the Jōō-dana [紹鷗棚]) -- as below.
Furthermore (and not only if the mizusashi is moved forward), he added that if it is difficult to lean the lid of the mizusashi against its left side, then the lid should be leaned against the left side of the tana, as shown above.
†This was done so that the mizusashi would occupy the same spot that it would if it were resting on the shin-daisu -- which was the only way chanoyu had been performed before then. (The fukuro-dana represented the first departure from the tea of the daisu, and so Jōō was still constrained by its teachings.)
‡Nowadays this teaching, too, seems to have been forgotten. Even in the Enkaku-ji, the tana is centered in the middle of the mat when used with the ro.
¹²Ue habōki [上 羽帚].
The habōki -- made from feathers between 9-sun and 1-shaku long -- was placed on the ten-ita of the Sairō-dana. It is not possible to speculate on the kind of feathers that would have been used.
The naka-dana was left empty during the shoza.
¹³Shita mizusashi tarai ・ hikkiri [下 水指 タライ ・ 引切].
This mizusashi was mentioned before in Book Two of the Nampō Roku, in the description of the chakai that Rikyū hosted on the 17th day of the Eleventh Month. In that entry, the mizusashi is referred to as a hando [ハント] (meaning a handō [飯胴], a sort of bronze container in which rice was served in a temple).
According to Book Six of the Nampō Roku, Rikyū owned two such containers, which he used as mizusashi, in succession. The first was 1-shaku 5-bu by 7-sun 5-bu, and had large round kan on the left and right sides. But he gave (or sold) this mizusashi to the daimyō Arima Noriyori [有馬則頼; 1533 ~ 1602]. Rikyū subsequently acquired a second container (which he calls a tarai [タライ = 盥], which means a basin such as used when washing the hands). This second container was round, and 8-sun in diameter. It also lacked handles. The color of this second container (according to the passage in Book Six of the Nampō Roku) was even more splendid than [the first].
The first-mentioned piece was too large to be placed on the Sairō-dana. Thus it must have been the second mizusashi that Rikyū used on this occasion. (The actual piece has not been identified; the photo, above, is of a similar kind of sawari mizusashi.)
Hikkiri [引切] refers to the futaoki -- one of Rikyū's take-wa [竹輪].
¹⁴Su [ス].
The section introduced by the word su [ス]* usually refers to utensils brought out from the katte at the beginning of the sumi-temae.
However, here it is curiously followed by the menu of the abbreviated kaiseki. __________ *Which is shorthand for the kanji mata [又], meaning “and again.”
¹⁵Suimono [吸物].
Suimono [吸物] means a clear soup, usually with small pieces of food included*.
Because Tanabata was a national holiday, the shōkyaku and ji-kyaku (if not the others†) would have had their fill of rich food over the course of the day at the Imperial court. __________ *Unlike nimono [煮物], here it is the soup that forms the bulk of the dish, with the solid food (sometimes just a couple of leaves, or mushrooms) added as a sort of garnish.
†The other two guests (who seem to have been among Rikyū's intimates) may have been charged with taking on the role of attendants, arranged by Rikyū to assist the two noblemen who occupied the first two places among the guests.
¹⁶Sake ni kaeshi [酒二返].
Two rounds of sake were served. The host usually joined his guests in drinking.
¹⁷Senbei ・ iri-kaya ・ shiitake [センヘイ ・ イリカヤ ・ 椎茸].
These were the kashi.
Senbei [煎餅] are rice crackers. Since they were a common gift given by the guests to the host, perhaps one of the noblemen had brought a box of fine senbei to Rikyū -- who decided to share them with everyone.
Iri-kaya [煎り榧] are the roasted nuts of the Japanese allspice tree (which is also known as the Japanese nutmeg yew, Torreya nucifera).
And the shiitake [椎茸] were most likely also roasted, on skewers, over a charcoal fire, dusted lightly with crushed salt as they were cooking.
¹⁸Go [後].
The goza.
With respect to the kane-wari:
- the toko had a tanzaku-bako [短冊箱] displayed on the floor, with a tankei [短檠] (a wooden stand supporting an oil-lamp) off to one side (the side closest to the toko-bashira)*, making it chō [調];
- the room had the kama in the ro, making it also han [半];
- and the tana had the tray of incense utensils on the ten-ita, the hishaku on the naka-dana, and the mizusashi and futaoki on the ji-ita, making it han [半].
Chō + han + han is chō, which is appropriate for the goza of a gathering that extends into the night. __________ *Though Rikyū did not mention it in the kaiki, a tankei would have been necessary, since he notes that the guests did not return to the tearoom until after it was completely dark.
During the goza, the tankei is placed in the tokonoma, to give light to the room in general. Additional lighting would have been provided by candles, which would be brought out from the katte at the beginning of the temae.
¹⁹Yoru ni iri [夜ニ入].
The guests returned to the room for chanoyu after it became dark. Perhaps they had been sitting in the koshi-kake, watching the sky grow dark and the stars come into focus*, chatting quietly, and perhaps reciting impromptu, seasonal poems. __________ *Tanabata celebrates the once-a-year meeting of the stars Vega (Orihime [織姫], the Weaver) and Altair (Hikoboshi [彦星], the Cowherd). It is said that they can meet only if the sky is clear.
⁰Toko hanaire tori-irete [床 花入取入テ].
The chabana was removed from the toko during the (prolonged) nakadachi -- since the flowers would not be easy to see after the room became dark (since the source of light would be below and on the left, making the flowers either nearly invisible, or obscured by grotesque shadows).
²¹Tanzaku-bako [短尺箱].
Rikyū has made another clerical error. The word should be tanzaku-bako [短冊箱] -- a box in which a collection of long poetry cards* were kept.
__________ *The cards could be blank (perhaps with paintings hand-sketched on them), or they might have seasonally-appropriate poems written on them. Rikyū's collection, on this occasion, probably included both kinds -- since, after reading the poems and sniffing the incense, the guests might be moved to write their own verses on the blank cards.
²²Ue, bon ni ﹆kōro, usu-gumo kōgō guri-guri, kasane-kyōji [上、盆ニ ﹆香爐、薄雲 香合 クリ〰、重香箸].
This entry, in the Enkaku-ji manuscript, is very confusing -- since Jitsuzan seems to have redistributed the different elements in a way that really does not make any sense.
A tray (Rikyū does not specify what kind, but it was probably 1-shaku across or a little larger) was placed on the ten-ita of the tana, on which were arranged the incense utensils:
◦ Rikyū's ido-kōro [井戸香爐]*;
◦ Rikyū's guri-guri kōgō [ぐりぐり香合], containing the kyara known as Usu-gumo [薄雲] (placed in a small envelope made of gold-foil-backed donsu), and several gin-yō [銀葉]†;
◦ and, apparently, with the pair of ebony kyōji [香箸] either stacked on top of the kōgō, or perhaps stacked one on top of the other (though this would look odd).
“Usu-gumo” [薄雲] was the name of Rikyū's personal variety of treasured kyara [伽羅] incense wood‡. __________ *While Rikyū also seems to have owned (or at least had access to) the famous celadon Chidori kōro [千鳥香爐] that had been one of Jōō's particular treasures, celadon does not look good under artificial illumination. Thus Rikyū's ido-koro (which is a deep beige color) would have looked much better at night.
The kōro is marked with a red spot in the Enkaku-ji manuscript, indicating that it was an object of special consideration (though whether for Rikyū, when organizing the arrangement, or for the delectation of the guests, is not clear).
†Gin-yō [銀葉] are pieces of mica approximately 1-sun square, usually with an applied silver edge. The kyara is placed on the gin-yō to burn. This keeps the ash clean and uncontaminated (the resins in the kyara melt as it is heated), and allows the host to discard the used incense easily (by throwing it away together with the gin-yō to which it is fused).
‡That is, he owned the entire branch or log. Teamen of the period preferred to own the entire piece, if they could afford it, rather than buying a fragment.
In the manuscript consulted by Tanaka Senshō (which was the copy that Tachibana Jitsuzan made with the Shū-un-an documents in front of him), the word Usu-gumo [薄雲] is clearly associated with the word kōgō, not the kōro, and the entry reads as I have described it above. In the Enkaku-ji version, however, “Usu-gumo” appears to be the name of the kōro (though no such piece has ever been identified); and the kōgō, meanwhile, seems to be a jū-kōgō [重香合], which is a set of two or three little boxes that sit one atop the other, in which the kyara incense, new gin-yō, and the discarded gin-yō (with a burned-out piece of kyara fused to each) are kept (the lowest box is lined with metal to prevent the hot gin-yō from damaging the lacquer). While such boxes were known even in the early days, there is no indication that Rikyū ever owned one. Neither has a guri-guri jū-kōgō ever been found.
Precisely why Jitsuzan changed the associations when making the copy that he intended to present to the Enkaku-ji is not known. Probably the easiest explanation is that he copied the original in a hurry, and did not trust his eyes when he came to making the copy -- letting his imagination change things to suit his seventeenth century prejudices.
²³Naka hishaku [中 ヒシヤク].
The hishaku was placed on the naka-dana.
²⁴Shita mizusashi moto no ・ futaoki moto no [下 水指 元ノ ・ 蓋置 元ノ].
And the mizusashi and futaoki remained as they were, on the ji-ita of the tana.
⁵Chaire ryūgo [茶入 リウコ].
Rikyū has used this chaire several times before in the series of chakai documented in Book Two of the Nampō Roku -- usually on festive occasions -- but scholars are divided regarding the precise piece in question.
Most seem to lean toward a drum-shaped chaire (originally a gift container for medicinal liqueur), in which case the word would be ryūgo [立鼓].
Shibayama Fugen (and those scholars who follow his lead), however, prefers a container that was originally used as a ceremonial wine-cup (this would be especially appropriate, since it, too, was used on festive occasions), called a ryūgo [立觚], and example of which is shown below.
²⁶Chawan Ko-mamori [茶碗 木守].
This was a red chawan made by Chōjirō [長次郎]. Over the course of his life (as documented in his surviving kaiki), Rikyū used this chawan more often than any of the others. So, if any of the bowls can be considered to approach Rikyū’s ideal, this one must come closest.
The original chawan was destroyed during the great earthquake in the early part of the 20th century. What is shown is an Edo period copy, made when the original was still extant.
In addition to the above things, Rikyū would have used an ori-tame [折撓] of his own making as the chashaku. And, most probably, a mentsū [面桶], as the koboshi.
²⁷Cha sugite kō ari [茶過テ香アリ].
After Rikyū finished serving tea, the party turned to the appreciation of kyara [伽羅] incense. In addition to the kind prepared by Rikyū (which he had named “Usu-gumo” [薄雲]), noblemen usually carried a little of their own favorite kyara on their person, which they often shared with the others on occasions such as this.
The guests (and host) would have passed the night sniffing incense and composing poems, to honor the meeting of the stars; and the party probably did not break up until the first light separated the lovers in the heavens for another year.

The Brow Beat Live Tour 2018 “Ragnarök” Urepia Report
[TRANSLATION] Witness the birth of the ‘Rockstar of the Next Generation’! The Brow Beat Live Tour Report
Release Date: 16 March 2018
Co-translated with @rz-jocelyn.

Popular Actor Sato Ryuji’s band project ventured on their first tour! Reporting on the situation.
Sato Ryuji, the highly sought after actor who has acted in stages to dramas, such as Musical ‘Touken Ranbu’ and Drama ‘Ochanomizu Rock’, started a band project called ‘The Brow Beat’ as the rock vocalist “Ryuji”.
The final performance of his first tour, ‘The Brow Beat Live Tour 2018 “Ragnarök”’ was held on 4 February at Tokyo’s EX THEATER ROPPONGI.
With PENICILLIN'S HAKUEI taking the approach of a total produce, the album “Ragnarok” was released in January; With this album in hand, the tour of the same name visited 4 cities around the country, and the tickets for all the performances were sold out on the very day [that ticket sales opened]. Waiting for the curtains to rise, the full house venue was filled with a sense of euphoria.
According to the appointed time, the lights darkened, and hands clapped in accompaniment as the screen showed the opening footage that was symbolic of the worldview of The Brow Beat. When the words “Are you ready” came into view, the venue was rocked with loud cheers.
The first [arrow that was] shot was “IRIS”, the first track on the album ‘Ragnarok’. With one breath, fans were drawn into the world of The Brow Beat by the pop-rock tune that was overflowing with a rushing sensation. The presence of [the person] smiling in front of the microphone stand as he sang a resounding long note with earnest…… This writer was extraordinarily surprised by Ryuji, who was so breathtaking that you would not think that this was his first tour. As if to say, “This live, it’s a “Ragnarok” on the existing music world!”, you could certainly feel that this was the birth of a new rockstar.
“Let’s have a blast!” (Ryuji)
At the explosion of sound and the burst of CO2 rising up [from the audience], with Ryuji’s scream as the signal, we moved to the up-tempo “Nippon”. Stretching out his body and leaning forward to the very edge of floor, Ryuji flashed a grin at the fans, as if he was enticing them [to join him], and blew them a kiss.
Going wild with abandonment, moving around on the stage freely and leisurely at his own pace, he seemed as if he was embodying the lyrics of “become the flower that would dye the era in colour” in his performance, and watching him, this writer was dumbstruck, thinking, “This is unbelievable, an incredibly mind-blowing rock vocalist has been born...!”
“Congratulations on the tour’s final performance! How you would like to enjoy yourself is completely up to you; for the people who would like to go wild, please go wild, and for the people who would like to completely focus and watch, please focus and watch; whichever way you would like to do it, in your own way, let's enjoy ourselves! Let's party and have blast!” (Ryuji)
From the Japanese-style romanticist rock number “Jisenoku” to the emotional “Scarlet Syndrome”...... following the up-tempo song with a song that was coloured in a different shade and had a drop [in tempo], the whole venue was enveloped by a passionate fervour that seemingly rose up [from the audience] all the way to the press area on the second-floor of the hall. Not to be outdone by the pumping fists in the air and the roaring shouts, Ryuji sang beautifully as he headbanged! The striking appearance of the audience and the artist that fed off each other’s energy was extraordinarily impressive.
The delicate sensitivity of the rock ballad “unlost” showed off the depth of Ryuji’s true strength as a vocalist. Without even [stopping for] an emcee, there was a 180 degree change in his worldview from the [songs that were like a] passionate, upbeat fierce attack just now, and he sang it at the top of his voice, and the whole venue was drawn into [his worldview]. It is often said that “songs are the heart [of the artist]”, and in his singing voice which expresses his “heart”, his backbone as an actor is beautifully alive.
In the emcee, with a cosy atmosphere [like] of a band with a long history, the supporting members, Narukaze (Guitar), CHIROLYN (Bass) and Kado Shuntarou (Drums), together with Ryuji, spoke of their thoughts about this tour.
“Ah, I don’t want it to end. Even though there weren’t many days, they were very fulfilling.” (Narukaze)
“I’ll do my best so that we can drink good beer at the afterparty! (laughs)” (CHIROLYN)
“Wow~~! There are so many people! I’ll do my best!!” (Kado Shuntarou)
Facing the members, Ryuji responded to them with a smile. From that expression that was full of respect for the members of this tour, it could be seen just how fulfilling this [experience] was [for him].
In expressing this feeling, he declared, “If this band gets to stand on a bigger stage, I’ll dye my hair pink!”, and with that, he performed the famous song “Pink Spider” by hide with Spread Beaver, which CHIROLYN is associated with. It was heartwarming to see that more than anyone else in the venue, it was Ryuji himself who enjoyed having the valuable opportunity to perform “Pink Spider” with CHIROLYN’s chorus and bass. For him [Ryuji] who has loved rock from his teens, it felt like hide, who valued and honoured young talent, was watching over him [Ryuji] from above, his smile and his singing voice.
The surprising setlist that was unique to the live still continued. HAKUEI made an appearance on stage as the guest vocalist, and he dropped [the song] “Kyousei Ecstasy” from the project that he supervises, “Litchi ☆ Hikari Club”. With the overwhelming aura of a rockstar and the flexible, new talent appearing together [on stage], the venue was drawn into a dirty and sexy world.
In the middle of it, there was a performance where HAKUEI took a hold of Ryuji's chin and made it look like he was about to kiss him, and amidst the powerfully intense theatrical staging, I could tell that the entire hall sucked in a breath.
“Tokyo, how’re you guys doing!? I can’t hear you!? That’s not loud enough at all!!”
Interposed between the member call time, the fans’ roaring screaming resounded, and the live at last headed towards the climax. Fitting [their voices] together, HAKUEI and Ryuji used all their energy and clashed together in the hard rock tune of “Black & Black” driving it into the skyrocketing whirlpool of passionate fervour in the hall.
Following this, in the Brow Beat’s hard metal number “Paranoid Star”, to respond to Ryuji, who was kneeling on the raised platform and shouting with all his might, fans were headbanging, and the audience was already thrown into chaos. I have already said this before but, with the especially vivid sense of unity and passionate fervour, you would not think that this was their first tour.
The last part of the actual performance was decorated with the song that had a positive message, “Browbeat”. With the shining and sparkling silver confetti, and the sound of Ryuji’s voice as he sang about the future [filling the hall], everyone in the venue reached catharsis. Ryuji turned the microphone towards the fans and asked the audience to join in for a call [and response]. With his smile, a smile that is different from the times that he shines brightly as an actor, he boldly takes on the challenge of bringing forth a range of expressions that are larger than life, and I get the impression that this is a representation of who he is, the person that is “Sato Ryuji”, who is becoming increasingly more alluring.
For the encore part, there was a unique experiment as they presented 3 covers arranged acoustically to entertain the audience.
“Everyone, do you believe in things like fate?” (Ryuji)
Chatting pleasantly with Narukaze, from such a shyly done song introduction, it seemed as if Ryuji's voice was tracing the world spun by the lyrics in the song that was sung, which was Kubukuro’s “Akai Ito”, capturing, in one fell swoop, the universal feeling of love that anyone would have. It was so impressive that the girls near this writer were wiping away tears in their eyes.
In Iruka’s “Nagori Yuki”, with a short break from one note to the next, he enthralled [the audience] with his singing that overflowed with emotions, [leading on to] the last [song], hide with Spread Beaver's “ROCKET DIVE”. With the sound of the fans’ clapping and percussion, and the acoustic guitar vividly colouring Ryuji’s voice, the venue was wrapped in a sense of euphoria.
Furthermore, on this day, to answer the excited cheering, there was also a double encore part! HAKUEI came on to the stage holding a bottle of champagne as a surprise for Ryuji, who had his birthday on the first day of this tour, and commented, “Today is the birthday of rockstar Ryuji!” The fans, who had been entranced by the acoustic part, had a burst in their rise in tension, as they surged into “Nippon” and “Black & Black”.
Up until the final note, striking to the end with everything that he had, his expression as he finished the last of the performance, the figure of Ryuji falling to his knees in that place, he was, without a doubt, a rockstar.
Saying “Let’s meet again!” and leaving behind an impish grin, even after Ryuji had left the stage, the venue was still full of excited commotion, clapping and elation. The charm of Sato Ryuji is no longer limited to the theatre or in front of the camera. It was like this that we witnessed a “Ragnarok” on the rock scene in 2018.

Today (3 May 2018) is the day of The Brow Beat’s special performance ‘Extra“Ragnarök”~Welcome to after party at Yaon’ at Hibiya Open-Air Concert Hall, which celebrates the success of their first sold out tour! ♡

Favorite scent: The sea, florals, Etsuji’s cologne. Favorite person: Etsuji Goto.
Randoms –
Ten facts about your muse:
⚫ Misaki was a geisha of high esteem in Hingashi for her talent in music and dancing, for her natural grace, her beauty, and her lightheartedness. She was highly requested by the guests of the ochaya, known to always bring a quick wit and a listening ear to the room with her.
⚫Before she was a geisha, Misaki was the bastard child of a Hingan lord and one of his wife’s handmaids. For five years, she was permitted to live in the castle, though once the lord’s wife had a son and child of their own, Misaki was brought to a faraway geisha house - personally delivered by the lord himself. Despite having fond memories of her father, Misaki resents him for abandoning her and not putting his foot down when his wife insisted they banish her.
⚫The family legend surrounding the Ito family is one that brought Misaki unwanted attention from the Garlean forces. It’s believed in Misaki’s village that the Ito family began long ago with the spawn of a dragon turned hyur and a hyur woman, and that any child of Ito lineage born beneath a blood moon would inherit the blood of the dragon. Misaki was born beneath just such a moon, and when she first cried, every cherry blossom in the vicinity burst into bloom. This lead the village to believe she was a daughter of the dragon, and the Garleans to believe her family harnessed some sort of ancient Allagan technology, or worse, that they were the spawn of a primal.
⚫ Though untrained, Misaki has a natural ability to control the elements.
⚫ She has two younger brothers that she’s aware of, but has never met, beyond holding her baby brother the day he was born. To this day, she hasn’t heard from her parents since she was abandoned at the geisha house.
⚫Misaki was kept for a period of several months by a high-ranking Garlean official as a pleasure slave. During this time, she was also tortured and experimented upon to explore the possibility of her possessing ancient Allagan technology.
⚫ It was a Garlean primus pilus and a Garlean doctor who rescued Misaki. The pilus was an infrequent guest of the ochaya, and one that Misaki found to be of slightly softer heart than his comrades. She was able to get a message to him telling him of her situation through the Garlean doctor, who was able to trickle it down to Etsuji’s gang. This group effort allowed Lucius, along with the doctor, to bring her and several other former geisha to Eorzea - though only the Garleans, Etsuji, and Misaki survived a crash landing into Thanalan.
⚫ A close friend of Misaki’s - someone she considered a brother - was a samurai to a lord who frequented the ochaya. He taught her self defense through martial arts, something she took to quickly.
⚫In recent months, and during her time kept captive by the high-ranking Garlean official, Misaki has been working to liberate Doma from the Garleans. She specializes in gaining vital information and passing it on to other rebels, often going undercover and using her charm to garner such information.
⚫ Misaki was, for the most part, happy in her geisha position. She has a natural warmth and kindness, and despite becoming slightly hardened by the circumstances she was put in and her nation was put in, she remains a gentle woman. Staunch and stubborn, she has refused to let traumatic experiences steal her sweetness from her.
Five Things -
Things they like:
Animals - especially ones of the soft and fuzzy variety.
Music and dancing.
Quiet places, like the sea late at night or deep in a forest.
Flower arranging.
Helping other people.
Things they dislike:
Garlemald and most Garleans.
Unnecessary violence.
Needles.
Dark, unfamiliar spaces.
Dirty spaces.
Good traits:
Loyal. Once her loyalty is earned, it is unwavering. Misaki is a friend for life, unless you do something to truly betray her trust or use her. She will always go out o fher way to help someone she cares for - and even people she doesn’t know well, or at all.
Kind. Misaki has not let past experiences define her present self. She has maintained the sweetness, compassion, and empathy she has always had to the best of her ability. In her, one can always find a shoulder to lean on or an ear that will listen with sympathy and gentleness.
Talented. Receiving an education in grace, music, and dancing with the geisha has its perks. Misaki is talented in entertaining, with a pretty voice, the ability to play the shamisen and koto very well, and is skilled in traditional Hingan dancing.
Intelligent. Misaki would not have survived Garlemald’s subjugation if she wasn’t bright. Being clever and able to think quickly on her toes has saved her and others numerous times, when she has not been able to charm her way out of a situation.
Protective. She is unafraid to defend those weaker or meeker than she is. Misaki will insert herself into potentially dangerous situations, even if it means she herself will get harmed, to avoid an innocent person being hurt. This natural instinct is only heightened when it comes to those she’s close to, or around children.
Bad traits:
Guarded. Sweet as she might be, Misaki is not an easy person to truly get to know. Her bare personality is hidden with one she puts on in public or around those she doesn’t know. It takes a persistent person to see her true personality. She is slow to genuinely trust people.
Hot temper. Misaki is not always slow to anger. When she’s angry, she has a sharp, hurtful tongue, and a harshness that often comes as a surprise to others. There is venom behind her bite, and she makes no effort to hide it when provoked.
Slow to forgive. Since gaining Misaki’s trust is so hard to do, it is near impossible to gain it back once it’s been broken. Feeling betrayed is something that cuts her deeply, and it is not easy to gain her forgiveness.
Manipulative. She will manipulate you with her beauty and charm if she believes that you’re a bad person with good information. This is mostly applicable to those dealing in the underworld or those who have information that could assist in harming Garlemald. She will try to manipulate bad people into trusting her and then do something to damage them, either physically or emotionally, especially if she knows they’ve harmed an innocent person.
Stubborn. It’s hard to talk Misaki out of a bad idea or into a good one once she has her mind set upon something. If she’s decided she’s going to throw herself into a lion’s den to pull someone from it, there’s virtually no convincing her to do otherwise.
Personalities they gravitate toward:
Intelligent, educated types.
Other Hingans and Domans with strong ties to home.
Entertainers.
Sweet, kind-hearted people.
Father figures.
Those who don’t get into drama often, or for the fun of it.
Personality types they avoid:
Arrogant, know-it-all, edgy jerks.
People who constantly play the victim card.
Relentless flirts.
Garleans, or anyone else with a superiority complex.
Racists, xenophobes, bigots, and anyone else who falls into that category.
Fears:
Being imprisoned by Garlemald again.
Losing touch with her roots
Being alone.
The dark.
Unwanted physical contact.
--------- RP HOOKS
Misaki is definitely a character I feel comfortable in having pre-established relationships for! She was kind of a queen bee in the geisha community. Maybe your character was a rival, or one of the wealthy patrons who frequented the tea house and enjoyed her singing, dancing, and conversation.
The Ito family and its legend was well known in certain regions. Maybe your character heard whispers of the dragon girl who made flowers bloom who disappeared all of a sudden, with not much comment offered about it by Lord Ito and his royal house.
Her significant other, Etsuji Goto, is a good boy who fell in with the wrong crowd - essentially, the yakuza. A rival gang burned Misaki’s tea house to the ground, killing several geisha and the house mother along with it before turning them in to the Garleans searching for the geisha girl herself. Was your character one of the rival gang members? A Garlean who dealt with the geisha girl? Who knows!
Other entertainers! Now in Eorzea, Misaki is enjoying herself trying to meet other entertainers, especially any from Doma or Hingashi.
Though she definitely drifts more towards good characters, for the sake of storylines and fun writes, my boyfriend and I are looking for criminally aligned characters to stir the pot a bit. Etsuji is still involved with his yakuza ‘brothers,’ and there are plenty of shady dealings to be had.
You can reach me either here on Tumblr via IM, or in-game on: Misaki Ito, Isolde Grey, Belle Haillenarte, or Qara Noykin.

A 1001-kilometer Journey: Around Western Visayas in 3 Days
Matagal ko nang pangarap mag-solo backpacking trip. Una dahil matigas ang ulo ko, pangalawa gusto ko kasi i-challenge ang sarili ko, pangatlo dahil matigas ang ulo ko. Hahaha! It was December 2016 nang maging successful akong makapagbook ng roundtrip tickets via Air Asia papuntang Kalibo.
July 8, 2017. There I was in our office, holding a peso coin and thinking why on Earth am I letting it decide for me. Hahaha! But still, I flipped it. And it said I should go for Iloilo-Antique-Aklan and forget about the others.
So I did. I went to those three provinces, and boy it was one hell of a good decision.
Day 1: Aklan to Iloilo
The flight to Aklan from Manila was fast, namalayan ko na lang nasa Kalibo International Airport na kami. I think it only took 35 minutes. We arrived at KIA around 4:20 in the afternoon, and I immediately went out of the airport to look for a tricycle to Ceres Bus Terminal. Tip: Wag na kayo sumakay sa labas mismo ng airport kasi medyo mahal kung doon kayo manggagaling. Short walk lang from KIA yong highway kung saan dumadaan most of the tricycles.
The trip was also short, 10 minutes lang I think. I paid 20 pesos and waited for the bus to Iloilo na according sa napagtanungan ko, 5PM pa dumadating. I bought snacks habang naghihintay and in fairness, 5PM sakto dumating yong bus pa-Iloilo. The fare was 253 pesos and will take 4 hours pa-terminal nila sa Jaro, Iloilo.
9PM na nga no’ng nakarating kami and malas kasi umaambon. (Oo wala akong dalang payong sa trip na to, sabi ko naman sa inyo magaling talaga ako eh hahaha). I approached a man to ask anong jeep ang sasakyan ko pa-Ong Bun Pension House (booked via Travel Loka 300 pesos for a solo room), and unfortunately wala na palang dumadaang Jaro-Liko that time dahil gabi na. Fortunately, papunta rin s’ya around the are no’ng pension house so he invited me na mag-taxi na lang kami. 20 minutes after, nasa tapat na kami ng pension house and when I was paying half of our fare, he told me na okay na ‘yon. Nagulat ako mga mamshie! Hahaha! He just added na ganoon daw sila mag-welcome ng mga turista sa Iloilo and okay lang kasi same way lang kami. Nagpasalamat na lang ako (tatanggi pa ba ako e libre na nga?) and proceeded to check in inside the pension house. Lumabas ako saglit to buy light dinner and then spent the night reviewing my itinerary. 12MN, lights off na.
Day 2: Iloilo to Antique
I started the day early to maximize my time. 7AM, nagcheck out na ako sa pension house para diretso na ako sa byahe in the evening. First stop? Breakfast at Madge Cafe (Gastos; 250 pesos). Sumakay ako ng jeep with a signboard na La Paz (7 pesos), and then bumaba sa La Paz Public Market.
Pagkatapos ko mag-tour, Ate Diday approached me and asked me kung nalibot ko na ba yong city and then she told me tips and good places to go.
Other places you can go sa area: Arroyo Fountain, Old Iloilo Provincial Capitol
9AM, I was already at Jaro Cathedral. From Museo Iloilo, ride a jeep na may placard na Jaro CPU (7 pesos). Unfortunately, sarado yung church so I just prayed sa entrance then nagpunta ako sa kabilang building to light a candle.
Other places you can go sa area: Casa Mariquit, Nelly Garden a.k.a. Lopez “white” house (kailangan ng reservation), and Sanson y Montinola Antillian House
After Jaro Cathedral, I went to Molo Church.
Other places/s you can go sa area: Camiña Balay nga Bato. It s located near Molo Plaza, along the highway. Tour rates are P150 per person may kasama na yong house tour and tsokolate tasting, P200 per person naman kapag house tour, tsokolate, at pancit molo tasting ang gusto mo.
After touring the plaza and the church, lumabas na ako. I bought meryenda and took the opportunity to ask paano pumunta ng Iloilo City Hall since maganda raw yong view sa roofdeck no’n. According to manang, kailangan ko raw sumakay ng jeep na may placard na “Baluarte” (7 pesos) and sabihin ko sa driver na ibaba ako sa City Hall. The trip took around 20 minutes.
First kong pinuntahan sa City Hall is yung gallery nila. The room is full of displays and it perfectly depicts Iloilo and its rich history. After looking around, I rode the elevator to 7th floor and looked for the entrance ng roofdeck. Soooobrang amazing! You can even see Guimaras Island from there, and the skyline was so beautiful. Plus, everything is freeee!
After enjoying the scenic view, bumaba na ako. Doon lang din ako nakaramdam ng gutom haha! Sa kanto from the city hall, may restaurant where you can eat one of the best tasting La Paz batchoys which is Ted's Old-timer La Paz Batchoy.
Other places you can go sa area: Iloilo Customs House, Calle Real, the cultural core of Downtown Iloilo, Arroyo Fountain, and Old Provincial Capitol.
After the half-day tour, sumakay na ako ng jeep papuntang Molo Terminal kung saan nandoon ang mga buses and vans pa-Garin Farm. Ang placard no’ng jeep is “Villa Arevalo”. When I reached the terminal, I boarded a van (70 pesos) and told the driver na ibaba ako sa San Joaquin. The trip was around an hour and a half and pagbaba ko sa kanto pa-Garin, sumakay ako ng habal-habal (20 pesos). After 10 minutes, nakarating na ako sa Garin. (Entrance fee: 150 pesos)
Garin Farm and Pilgrimage Resort I must say is a mix of agriculture, leisure, and pilgrimage in one place. Agriculture kasi ang daming mga hayop mamshies! As in yung entrance, maririnig mo yung mga baka, manok, ibon. Haha! The walk up to the entrance of the pigrimage was around 10-20 minutes (natagalan ako kasi natuwa ako sa mga baka hahaha). Yung leisure kasi may mga activities sila sa baba ng pilgrimage like zip line, fishing, boating and may restaurant din.
To reach the top of the pilgrimage, 456 steps yung aakyatin mo so better bring water while doing it. May option naman na mag-golf cart kayo paakyat which is 30 pesos but I decided to challenge myself and syempre para tipid din no! (Plus bragging rights na din haha). No kidding, I really had goosebumps when I reached the top, may music pa kasi sila mga mamshie so feeling ko nasa langit talaga ako hahahaha nakakaloka. Ang puti puti no’ng paligid!
6PM na ako nakabalik sa kanto beside the highway dahil nag-enjoy talaga ako ng sobra sa Garin Farm. Doon na ako naghintay ng bus pa-Culasi, Antique na dadaan sa Tibiao. (Fare: 153 pesos) I reached Antique around 9:30 in the evening and that’s when an almost nightmare started. If you want to know what happened bakit ninerbyos ang parents ko here’s the full story. But long story short, namali ako ng calculate sa oras and ended up almost a thousand kilometers away from home, with no one to turn to, no place to stay aside from an old waiting shed beside the dark, deserted highway. Thank God for angels! Huhu. I ended up sleeping sa bahay ng kapitana ng Brgy. Importante. It was a long night but I am very grateful na everything turned out fine. 💖
Day 3: Antique to Aklan
Maaga ulit ako gumising to catch the sunrise on the way to Kayak Inn Kawa Hot Bath. Manang Suzette a.k.a one of the angels who saved me helped me arranged a habal-habal the night before so 6:30 pa lang ng umaga, on the way na kami sa bundok. The trip will take you around 30 minutes.
Ako lang yong guest ng Kayak Inn that morning, usually the price (250 pesos) is good for 30 minutes lang but they allowed me to stay in one of the kawas until gusto ko. Walang halong charot, worth all the hassle yung place. Ang ganda, ang peaceful, ang sarap nong experience. It will really help you wash away yong mga baon mong sama ng loob from wherever you are. Hahaha! Sulit lahat ng pinagdaanan ko to reach the place so in the end, wala akong kahit kaunting regret.
Tip: No signal sa area so send messages na agad before umakyat. The use of cottage for day-time use plus restroom is free.
After enjoying the place, I immediately went down na rin to catch a bus pa-Kalibo. The trip will take you around 3 hours (155 pesos). You’ll enjoy the scenic view while on your way so prepare your phone pa rin! :)
After reaching Aklan, I looked a tricycle na magdadala sa’kin sa Bakhawan Eco-park. (300 yong tricycle fee which includes the driver as your personal tour guide, taga-picture and the ride pabalik sa Kalibo International Airport)
The eco-park is being tagged as the most successful mangrove reforestation project in the country. More than one kilometer na lakaran ito mga mamshie at may magandang view sa dulo so go push! May cafeteria rin serving local delicacies so yon nalang ang gawin mong inspiration sa paglalakad. Haha!
That’s how I ended my 1001-kilometer journey. It didn’t turn out exactly the way I expected it would be, but I guess that’s what makes the whole trip a memorable one. ✨
PS.
May you, the one reading this right now, also find the courage to pursue something you’ve been wanting to do even if most of the people are saying you can’t. May it be a solo backpacking trip like what I did, or trying out something new, or finally deciding about something you’ve been running away from for a long, long, time already. Think hard, think about it over and over, and if in the end you still feel all the overwhelming need to do it, I hope you find yourself strong enough to say “Yes, I will!”

For those coming from Bontoc, Banaue and Ilocos Sur: (credit to sir juarez for this route)
Via Bontoc
From Bontoc catch a jeepney to Sagada. Jeepneys leave Bontoc every hour from 6AM to 1PM, travel time is approximately one hour and fare is around P50.
Via Banaue
Banaue route is a good choice if you plan to drop by to the famous Rice Terraces of Banawe.

The bus will stop near the Bontoc Municipal Hall. From there, ride a jeepney to Sagada for P50. You may opt to ride on the jeepney roof to enjoy the view and the sea of clouds of Bontoc and Bayyo.
Via Ilocos Sur
If you are coming from Ilocos Region, the best route is via Tagudin-Cervantes-Sabangan Road that connects Ilocos Sur and Cordillera. Taking this route involves three transfers from the town of Tagudin in Ilocos Sur. Local shuttle vans depart on regular intervals from as early as 6AM to as late as 5PM from Bitalag Junction to the town of Cervantes, fare is P150.00 and travel time is approximately two (2) hours on a scenic ride that passes through Besang Pass National Park.
At Cervantes, transfer to a Bontoc bound van stationed at the plaza or at Sitio Bulaga after Aluling Bridge. Vans to Bontoc leave as early as 6AM, with the last trip at around 2PM. There are local buses and jeepneys too from Cervantes Market to Bontoc. Ask the driver or conductor to drop you off at Sagada junction, fare is approximately P100 pesos, travel time is around an hour and a half.
From Sagada junction, you may catch a jeepney or bus bound to Sagada, it is only around 15 minutes ride.

WHEN TO GO
For us the best time to go and explore Sagada is in the month of November to February. The weather is cool and dry. Late month of December brings with it the added bonus of the annual bonfire festival (Dec. 28). If you don’t mind a packed town, then this would be a fun time to go. Similarly, the town fiesta is held during the first week of February so that may be another festive time to visit.
March and April gets warm and dusty so skip those months if you want to experience Sagada’s cool mountain climate. The rains begin to fall more regularly from May to July, with typhoon season coming in August until October. Landslides are more frequent at that time so avoid those months at all costs. On top of that, it would be dangerous to enter Sumaguing Cave during rainy season since water levels can rise very quickly during a storm.
BUDGET AND EXPENSES:
Sagada is cheap. If you’re taveling with one other person and hiring guides to all the major sights, then you’ll be fine with a budget of around PHP 1,500-2,000 per day. This takes into account your hotel, guide fees, 3 daily meals, and some light shopping. Adjust accordingly based on how much you want to eat, drink, and shop.
Please be advised that Sagada is a cash only town. As far as I know, establishments still do not accept credit cards nor are there any money changers around.
But in our case, we only spent
Php 3,000.00 (for foods and pasalubong) Foods in Sagada ranges from Php 150.00 and above we only stayed for 3D2N.
Fare: Php 750.00 / person ONE WAY (750*2 = 1,500)
Environmental Fee: Php 35.00
Accomodation: 500 *2 nights = Php 1,000.00
TOTAL: Php 5,535.00
WHAT TO DO IN SAGADA:
1. Visit Sagada Pottery
The Sagada pottery not only sell finish products, they also demonstrate pottery making while explaining the whole process. Each of the earthen pieces is moulded with a lot of love and care, bringing out the perfect flawless shape. They are then beautifully painted and decorated, giving an antique look.
Entrance to the Pottery
Madam tessie is making some vase
2. Visit Ganduyan Museum
Ganduyan was the original and historical name of Sagada. It was changed as conquerors lived here in the Philippines centuries ago. They retained the original name Ganduyan to keep it alive. Per area, historical items were discussed to us, from the accessories, clothing, housewares – utensils, pots, cookwares – to different bags, linens and fabrics used by the poor, the rich, the dead and etc. paintings , drawings, sculptures , etc. For an hour, you’ll really learn a whole lot about the province’s culture, the way of living, beliefs, ideald and values that actually keep them going up until today.
3. See the Sunrise and the Sea of Clouds at Kiltepan Viewpoint.
This is a terrific way to star your day in SAGADA!. The highest point in the area, it’s known for its breathtaking views of the sun rising from behind the Cordillera Mountains over an ocean of clouds. Made famous (or infamous) by that “That thing call TADHANA” movie, the spot has been flooded with tourists during our time, but as long as you know how to find a spot you’re good to go with your “picture taking”. This is around 4kms from town proper, vans and jeepneys can be arranged at the tourism office or with your tour guide.

4. Spelunking in Sumaguing Cave
Popular for its stunning rock formations and potential for danger, this cave is an absolute must-do for any first-time visitor to Sagada.
Though a lot of fun, be warned that Sumaguing Cave is SOOOO dangerous so it must not be attempted without a guide. It’s pitch black and many of the rocks are very slippery. Losing your balance and hurting yourself is a real possibility. Apart from keeping your balance and watching your step, it isn’t the most physically demanding but it does have its challenges (ie rapelling up and down a 10-ft rope).
Entrance of the Cave
and the dangerous adventure begins!
Water Terraces
5. See Kapay-aw (Batad) Rice Terraces
It is home to the spectacular tiered, amphitheatre – shaped terraces.
6. Trek to Pongas Falls
The extremely cold water on the natural pool created by the cascading waters of the majestic Pongas falls invites trekkers for a relaxing dip after an hour of trekking to the Big Falls. The water is so cold, that you will surely die of hypothermia if you stay there for long, but for the sake of fun, adventure and experience, it is a must to try dipping. 🙂
7. Walk to Lake Danum
With its grassy and tree-shaded ground, it is perfect place for camping or picnic, and serves as jump-off point to a Mt. Ampacao trek.
The Lake is small, it is actually more of a pond, but the locals refer to it as a lake, the water is low during summer and turns brown to orange, but on wet season, it turns green to murky. When the lake overflows during heavy rains, the water flows down to Balas-iyan River.
Some also say that Lake Danum offers the best view of sunset in Sagada, this you must see 🙂
Danum is the kankana-ey (Sagada’s local dialect) term for water.
8. Visit St. Mary the Virgin Episcopal Church
9. Trek to Echo Valley and See the Hanging Coffins Up Close
Another famous landmark of Sagada are the hanging coffins, an old traditional way of burying the dead. These coffins are found on cliffs and hard to reach areas. Not all Sagadians have the privilege to be buried this way when they die, they have very strict criteria and requirements known only to the locals.
Tourists can see the hanging coffins up close by trekking down from the Echo Valley. You need a guide if you have no idea where it is.
the Hanging Coffins
WHERE AND WHAT TO EAT:
YOGHURT HOUSE
We tried their Roasted Pork with Brown Sauce, Vegetable salad and rice.
This is one of my favorite place to dine in Sagada. You’ll surely keep coming back for their foods and the boho feel of the whole place.
Price wise, theirs are not that cheap but it is still all worth it because of the super delicious meals and the serving is quite overwhelming. We did not try all their offerings though but of course you can never leave SAGADA without having a taste of their famed yoghurt.
2. Misty Lodge!
This has got to be one of the homiest lodges in Sagada, but it’s a few blocks away from the Town Proper.
Here, we tried their Bacon Hawaiian Piazza and Boneless Bangus.
(they use fresh pineapples and bangus :)) )
3. Strawberry Cafe
When in Sagada, one of the popular restaurants is this cafe. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I should say that i had one of the best meals here. Try one of their breakfast offerings or their lunch / dinner meal. I also love their fast service.
4. Gaia Cafe and Crafts
Who wants the “That Thing Called Tadhana” feels ?? eh?
The ambiance won us over, what with the clear view of the mountains and the rice terraces. Their food was fresh, healthy, GAD! super delicious and ORGANIC.
and oh hey! THIS IS A VEGETARIAN FRIENDLY CAFE! 🙂
5. SAGADA BREW!
It has been said once and we’ll say it again: Sagada is a town made for walking. Most of the Time, first time tourists find it tiring to go up and down the hilly food street in this sleep town. Sagada Brew can change that!.
Located at almost the end of Sagada Road, Sagada Brew is not just a cafe. It is also a restaurant where you can have an appetizing breakfast or lunch and a dessert place where you can get home-made baked goodies at a reasonable price. (their brownies is a must try! Trust me)
Although the restaurant is quite small and the interior is simple, the combination of the pale yellow walls, the wooden tables and chairs and their glossy finish brings their food and the Sagada charm to light.
6. Bana’s Cafe
Like everything ins Sagada, Bana’s cafe is simple and rustic. Its indoor space has a seating capacity of around 20 people packed. The terrace which overlooks the gorge, roofs and the neighboors pigs has 4 tables for around 15 people. Bag of coffee beans are stored in the terraces. Bana’s is an 18-day Roaster Facility 🙂
Longganisa with fruits and bacon + Civet Coffee
7. Sagada Lemon Pie House! (MOST RECOMMENDED)
Other than nature tripping, enjoy the food tripping in Sagada. One of the must-eat delicacy in this town is Lemon Pie.
Sagada Lemon Pie House is one of the most popular food establishments in Sagada. It offers the best lemon pie in the country (Philippines). You can definitely taste the pure lemon flavor on their pies. It has no Artificial flavor and food coloring. The softness of the crust and the texture of the filling are really good.
The Whole Pie cost Php 200.00 while per slice is Php 35.00
The Cafe is almost covered with wood. Even the chairs and tables are made of wood. It also features artistic paintings and articrafts which are originally made in town. Aside from the famous pie, they also serves fresh brewed coffees, egg, pastries, and even complete meals like longganisa, chessy omelet with garlic rice, and red spicy chicken served with slice of lemon and veggies.
ALSO, try their egg pies and apple pies whenever available. BLUEBERRY pies are also available during early Summer.
Sagada is more than the list above, there are so much to do and experience in this small town. But for first timers, I believe that the list is enough to appreciate and love Sagada.

Art F City: L.A. Art Diary: Week Two, Part Two
A Parker Ito transfer painting in the office of Chateau Shatto, One of my favorite images I’ve seen of L.A.
Michael Anthony Farley (lifelong non-driver) is in Los Angeles, checking out the art scene and learning to love the city. Read parts one and two of his L.A. diary.
Saturday 7/1
“At this stage” Installation view.
I am hungover and terrified that I agreed to go to yoga.
Thankfully, Megan Gordon, artist and L.A. tour guide extraordinaire, is also hungover. We decide to skip yoga. “Sigh of relief” is the breathing exercise I learn today. She picks me up and we head to Downtown’s Chateau Shatto. The drive takes about 45 minutes longer than it should, because there is an anime convention happening a few blocks away from the gallery. Megan explains that L.A. drivers aren’t used to this many pedestrians (let alone ones in giant wigs and spandex outfits) so people “just kind of sit at intersections waiting to see what other people do”.
We arrive at the gallery, and the current show At this stage seems to reflect many of the same uncertainties as True Lies, the show I had seen the night before. With a hangover, however, the show here is mildly panic-inducing rather than commiserative. There’s a small mountain of American flag scraps in the middle of the gallery. The piece, Gardar Eide Einarsson’s “Flagwaste (Stars and Stripes)”, is made up of waste materials collected from flag factories. Around it, monitors display works by Jordan Wolfson and Elaine Sturtevant, among others. One Wolfson piece, “Con Leche,” follows a gaggle of animated Diet Coke bottles as they cheerfully traverse post-industrial suburbia. All the while, a narrator flatly discusses things like the bioaccumulation of toxins in our bodies. It’s upsetting on a level my hungover self isn’t prepared for.
We embrace the healing power of greasy/spicy eggplant in a Chinatown eatery where Rush Hour 2 was filmed, apparently. We’re ready to see more art.
I’m told Chinatown is fading as an arts neighborhood, but there are still plenty of galleries—many occupying niche specialties. The Los Angeles Contemporary Archive is an artist-run library with the near-impossible goal of indexing the city’s vast art scene. It’s unfortunately closed when we attempt to pop in, as is the Institute for Art and Olfaction, where artist Saskia-Wilson Brown teaches workshops about the potential of scent. The Good Luck Gallery, which specializes in “outsider artists” is open, however. They have a show up of self-taught Anna Zemánková’s mixed-media illustrations of imaginary plants. The late artist, who began making work in her retirement, left behind a relatively small portfolio of drawings incorporating embroidery and pieces of fabric. We’re told a substantial number of her surviving works are on display here. We decide to skip Velveteria: The Museum of Velvet Paintings because we don’t feel like paying the admission while we’re already short on time.
Christine Stormberg, “Virgin and Child”
The highlight of Chinatown is undeniably Christine Stormberg’s solo show Tina Warrior Princess Gallery at Leiminspace. The show features lumpy figurative cement sculptures and oil paintings depicting everything from grotesque Madonna-like icons to a huge painting titled “Lesbian Twins”. All the work is high-femme but exaggerated and slightly ridiculous—a diptych features feet bulging out of stripper heels and the shorts one of the sculptures is wearing sit about an inch off her butt, exposing her crack. Everything in here is great.
Christine Stormberg, “Standing in Line for the Club”.
Paul McCarthy at Hauser & Wirth, installation view.
It’s a bit of a disappointment, then, to arrive at Paul McCarthy’s solo show at Hauser & Wirth. Here, he’s going for a similar grotesqueness, but in massive wooden sculptures that resemble toys warped in both scale and perspective. They’re monumental but disconcertingly illegible—the luxurious wooden carvings don’t lend themselves to the same graphic sensibility as Stromberg’s vulnerable sculptures. They just look expensive and large—unapproachable in a way that negates their sensuous potential.
Hauser & Wirth
Then again, everything about Hauser & Wirth’s Arts District location feels expensive and large. It’s a massive warehouse complex around a central courtyard, complete with “a ridiculously expensive brunch spot” at the center of the compound. The works in the other galleries aren’t all that impressive either. Monika Sosnowska’s massive sculptures—in which architectural details are crumpled into inutile abstractions—are memorable only due to their size. The curatorial ethos here seems to be “shock and awe” with scale, rather than providing any opportunities for intimate access to actual content. After roughly twenty minutes walking around the cavernous spaces, I decide my time is better spent at a dinner party.
Sunday 7/2
I notice a peculiar tendency in Los Angeles: people frequently make oddly specific plans without going into any details explaining precisely what they are. I am told to meet at a friend-of-a-friend’s apartment because we’re being picked up to attend *something* that another friend-of-a-friend curated. I am told it involves the beach, and to dress accordingly.
Myself and a group comprised mostly of male models and artists assemble in Hollywood and are picked up by a party bus. No one seems to know exactly where we’re going, but champagne is flowing so there are few complaints. About an hour later, we’re herded into a VIP area (I can’t tell if it’s a house or restaurant) and handed whisky. I still have no idea what this curatorial endeavor we’re here to see is.
Hours later, we’re in an Uber to Malibu (despite my best protestations to the fact that Malibu is really far away) and I find myself at a house party, stranded over an hour away. I fall asleep in a guest room, and the last thing I see is a Jeff Koons Da Vinci purse for Louis Vuitton.
Monday 7/3
I’m performing at Exposure Drag, an eclectic queer night at a Highland Park punk bar. From the start of my time in L.A., Highland Park has been an uncommonly hotly discussed topic—the neighborhood is rapidly gentrifying, as yoga studios and chain stores push out taquerias and laundromats. Many Angelinos speak about spaces in the neighborhood as “a white people thing” or “a Mexican thing”. This night, however, is jam-packed and pleasantly diverse—with perhaps a slight majority of Latinx queers. There are performance art weirdos alongside more traditional drag queens, and the crowd is a nice mix of gay, straight, male, female, and everything in between.
#happy4thofjuly everyone from #unclesam singing #yankeedoodle . . . #dragking @spaceekadett making his #debut at #exposuredrag #theoffbeat #highlandpark #dragnight #dragshow
A post shared by Exposure Drag (@exposuredrag) on Jul 4, 2017 at 8:25pm PDT
The night is Independence Day themed. Two queens, Izzy A. She and Maebe A. Girl, put on a veritable soap-opera of a performance in which they alternately lip synch to prerecorded dialogue of housewives bickering about Fourth of July barbecues, and music. It’s so good. The drag king Spacee Kadett emerges as the world’s most terrifying Uncle Sam. For the first time since I’ve arrived in L.A., I feel at home.

Houseguest Chapter Nine
FFN II AO3
Summary: Tony trusts Cap with a story he doesn't often share and they receive bad news in regards to the stolen alien tech.
Chapter Nine: Consequences of Warnings Ignored
Sneider hadn't lied. The old man had warned him that his ribs were going to feel worse before they felt better. Sometime around three in the morning the painkillers had worn off just enough for the pain to slice through the trippy dreams he had been having and wake him up coughing and sputtering. He rolled to his side, curling in on himself as he did his best to will his body under control. His best wasn't cutting it. He was going to hurl, but he had no idea how to get himself up and out of bed, much less to the bathroom.
"I gotcha, Tones," a familiar voice said, and he squinted to see a trash can being held ready for him. He dove for it, emptying what little he had in his stomach until there was less than nothing left. He sank down, draped against the edge of the bed and focused on breathing for a long moment.
He could hear Rhodey shuffling, taking the trash can to the bathroom and running water in it. Tony couldn't muster the energy to move, just listen, and he heard his friend's footsteps returning. "Just like old times, huh?" he rasped, the joke sounding weak even to him.
"Yeah, I don't remember old times including as many broken bones," Rhodey huffed, moving back into his line of sight. It looked like he'd pilfered a pair of sweatpants and an MIT hoodie that Tony thought he actually remembered stealing from Rhodey years before. Well, he supposed that was fair.
"Cracked ribs, not broken," he corrected as his gaze slid past his friend to a chair not too far from the bed.
"Oh yeah? How's that foot?"
A blanket was slung over the back of the chair that wasn't usually there. "Rude. Did you sleep in a chair? I have guest rooms you know."
"Yeah, six of them. When do you ever have that many people stay over?"
"I like to have options."
Rhodey snorted. "I can't hear you from the guest bedroom."
"You worried about me, Rhodes?" Tony teased, but the other man's expression was more serious.
"Always these days, Tones. How're you feeling?"
Tony gave a dramatic groan. "Like a building exploded with me inside of it about thirty-six hours ago."
"That good, huh?"
"Oh yeah. That and I took pain meds on an empty stomach."
"Could be why you woke up like you did."
"Leaning in that direction, yeah."
Rhodey reached forward, the back of his hand pressed against Tony's forehead like he was checking for a fever and looked satisfied with the results. "You should -"
"I apologize for the interruption," JARVIS' voice cut in, "but I've just received a report that the transfer vehicle and police escort that was taking Ms Mira to a new holding facility was attacked."
"Just now?" Tony demanded. "It's the middle of the night."
"Probably avoiding morning traffic," Rhodey mused.
"How bad, J?"
"The reports are still coming in, but there appears to have been an explosion. Three confirmed fatalities currently, but medical is on its way."
Tony felt his chest tighten, his anxiety levels on the rise and he tried to think through them. He needed more information. More data. He couldn't do anything unless he had all the facts. "Explosion? Where?" He shifted, steeling himself.
Rhodey turned a half panicked look on him. "No no no. You stay down."
He had barely started the struggle to sit when two hands pushed gently against his shoulders, forcing him back against the pillows. "I have to help -"
"You're not in any condition to go help anyone right now."
Brown eyes met a darker set. "I tried to warn him."
Rhodey's determination shifted into an expression Tony couldn't quite place. It wasn't pity. He knew better than that, but where Tony felt the sudden onslaught of guilt at not being able to make Ito see reason and that failure costing likely good cops their lives, Rhodey seemed to join him somewhere on that spectrum of pain. "I know you did, buddy," he answered softly. "Listen, try to get some more sleep. You know I have enough contacts to run something down. As soon as I've got something I'll let you know. Okay?"
He still felt the overwhelming need to act, to make sure that this didn't happen again, but Tony found himself nodding and accepting Rhodey's admittedly reasonable proposal.
"Right. I'm gonna go wake Rogers up and -"
"Why?"
Rhodey snorted. "Because if someone isn't here you're gonna faceplant into the floor when you try to get up the second I'm out the door. C'mon, man. I know you." He reached forward, his touch brief on the side of Tony's face. "Get some rest. I'll call it in as soon as I've got it."
"Promise?"
"Promise." He turned towards the door and paused. "I know you won't believe me, but this wasn't your fault, Tones."
And then he was gone, leaving Tony to loose a trembling, pained breath as he squeezed his eyes shut, his imagination filling in the gaps of JARVIS' limited report.
___________
Colonel Rhodes was convinced that if someone wasn't watching Tony that he would try to slip out of the house as soon as Rhodes was gone. It seemed like a stretch until Steve poked his head into the presumably sleeping man's room to find it empty. A quick search through the bedroom and a call into the adjacent bathroom suite confirmed it.
Panic threatened his sleep deprived mind. Five minutes. He'd been responsible for Stark for five minutes and he'd lost him. Fantastic.
Just as quick as the panic had threatened, Steve pushed it aside. It wasn't useful anyway. Never had been. No, he needed to think this through. It hadn't been long since Rhodes had left, and as slow as he'd been moving a few hours before when they had all turned in for the night, he couldn't have gotten dressed and out the door yet. Maybe the garage? Or….
He stopped. "Jarvis?"
"Yes, Captain?"
"Where's Tony? Is he still in the house?"
"Mr Stark is in the kitchen," the AI answered briskly and Steve was off.
Down the stairs and into the kitchen, there was no immediate sign of the missing Stark. The coffee pot was on and brewing, but the lights were dimmed.
"Rhodey tell you what happened?"
Steve startled just a little at the unexpected voice from the room just beyond the kitchen. He followed it to find Tony curled into a chair, that old robe wrapped around him, and a tablet in hand. He flicked at it and the video feed he was looking at projected out so that Steve could see the mangled mess of vehicles left behind from the explosion.
"Two local cops are dead, one US Marshal," Tony said, his voice raw sounding and there was none of his usual enthusiasm.
"How?"
"Still waiting on more intel, but it happened when they were transferring our woman. If I were to take a guess, I'd bet she found a way to smuggle a piece of the alien tech with her and set it off."
Steve looked him over as subtly as he could. He looked exhausted and in no small amount of pain still. "Maybe you should get some sleep while we wait? It could be a while."
"I can't sleep."
"Just -"
"No."
The snap took Steve off guard and he stiffened. Tony must have seen the reaction because he loosed a long breath. "Sorry. I'm just…. I need to figure this out. There could be more out there. Until we figure out who these people are and if they got any more of it…" He squeezed his eyes and massaged the bridge of his nose. "I can't let anybody else get hurt."
You only fight for yourself. That's what Steve has told Tony when they'd first met. He'd seen footage, he'd read reports. He had thought he knew him, but all he'd seen was the image Tony projected for the world. This man - bruised, beaten, and heartbroken over the lives he couldn't save - somehow seemed so much more real than the mask of bravado that he usually wore. Steve took a careful seat across from him and pursed his lips thoughtfully.
"What?" Tony prompted tiredly.
"You said you created the Iron Man suit to make sure your tech didn't hurt anyone."
"Yeah," he managed, not sounding like he liked where this was going. Steve would have to tread carefully.
"SHIELD's files are… thin on what happened in Afghanistan, but that's where it started, right?"
Tony managed to look even more uncomfortable than before. "What are you asking, Cap?"
"What happened there? What made you choose this?"
Tony looked at him for a long moment and Steve thought the dark haired man might tell him to mind his own business. His reasons were his own, and when Tony uncurled and stood, he was pretty sure that was what he was expected to take away. He didn't move, but watched as the injured man limped slowly back towards the kitchen. "You coming or are you gonna make me shout?"
His invitations left a lot to be desired, but at least Steve was certain that's what it was. He followed, doing his best to keep his movements casual and unhurried. Tony looked uncomfortable enough with the subject as it stood.
The other man moved stiffly to the coffee pot, his voice soft and distant as he spoke. "I was there for a presentation. The Jericho Missile. The convoy escorting us back to base was hit and I was taken. Spent about three months there and built the suit to get out."
"That's about where the SHIELD files end. I just… I guess I'm asking what got you from there to being willing to get blown skyhigh."
Tony snorted. "I could ask you the same thing." He turned to lean back against the cabinets and sip at his steaming coffee. "There was a man I worked with. A… mentor. He was close with my dad. I found out he was selling my weapons to terrorists. This -" he taped the ARC reactor set into his chest - "keeps the shrapnel from my own bomb away from my heart. They were using those weapons on local families to keep them under their thumb. They ripped airmen to pieces with them to get to me. I swore I wouldn't let anyone use one of my designs like that again."
"The early missions that you ran," Steve breathed. "The ones with near to no information on them."
"They were to destroy my stolen tech."
Steve loosed a breath. That had been the missing piece. It made more sense now, and he knew he'd misjudged the other man early on. He knew it now more than ever. "I'm sorry."
That seemed to startle him out of the increasingly brooding mood he had been sinking into as he spoke. "Huh? For what?"
"The things I said before New York."
Tony ducked his head a little. "Yeah, well, you turned out to be more than just some hopped up super soldier so… live and learn, right?"
"Guess so," Steve murmured, the corner of his lips quirking up.
If Tony was going to offer anything further, he didn't get the chance. There was a loud chime that must have been the doorbell and he shot a questioning lol towards the front door. "J, what've we got?"
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm unable to get a clear visual of the individual for ID recognition."
Steve frowned. That didn't sound good.
"Show me what you dohave," Tony answered irritably.
An image popped up on the tablet he'd left on the kitchen island and Steve leaned in for a closer look. The man on the porch was slender, medium height, and very good at making sure his baseball cap shielded his face from view. Tony pushes a breath out through his nose. "I'll be damned. I think that's Ito."
Now that he said it, the figure did resemble the police captain. "What would he be doing here?"
"Won't know until we talk to him. Jarvis, let him in."

Notes: For a story that I never actually meant to write, this thing has grown like crazy....
And it's almost done. I just wrapped up the writing for chapter 10 and I think, at most, there may be 12 chapters all together. Watch it somehow turn into 20. That'd be just like my traitor brain to add on another arc to prove me wrong. :P
For those of you that celebrate, I want to wish you a very happy Chunukkah and a Merry Christmas! I hope everyone has a safe and fun holiday, and here's hoping that I can get the next chapter up by New Year! :D
Next Time: Danger follows Ito to Tony's doorstep.
