Jean Gaston Mantel (1914-1995) - La guedra
Oil on canvas. Painted in 1972.
25.6 x 31.9 inches, 65 x 81 cm. Estimate: MAD 30,000-50,000.
Sold Artcurial, Marrakech, 30 Dec 2023 for MAD 85,280 + B.P.
The title refers to a Moroccan dance form. Artcurial holds two sales each year in Morocco of Orientalist and Saharan-African art. I tend to show estimates and results in the currency of the host country. Using a website such as xe.com/currencyconverter/ will give you a quick comparison. In this instance, 1000 Moroccan Dirham is roughly 90 Euros.

[5:52 AM, 2/2/2023] Isabella: Shabatu: Day 11
TODAY IS YUMÁ PAWANAIA (CONTRACT DAY) The days of PAWANAIA represent processes of spiritual purification, which aim at cleansing the Kabbalist, both physically and spiritually. If it is not Ashuat, do a purification fast.
TODAY, ACCORDING TO THE KABBALIST ASTROLOGY, IT IS TIME TO SEPARATE To separate consists of the ability to distinguish, select, choose. The art of separating what is wisdom from what is stupidity. We are in the crescent moon of GUEDRA, today is the day fit for ruptures and breaks. It's time to walk away from anything that doesn't reinforce your purpose in this existence. Today we must separate ourselves from all that is artificial in our lives.
JOY Joy is the greatest antidote to depression. Laugh often. Seek it, despite whatever problems you may have today.
JUDGMENT Judgment is a relative thing. We don't judge a child for doing something wrong that he doesn't know how to do. We judge who we think should do things differently. We judge others (and ourselves) based on the relativity of what seems fair to us. What is really fair? Today, when the tendency to judge is great, take the measuring tape and measure by looking inward, not outward. [5:52 AM, 2/2/2023] Isabella: RELATIONSHIPS Unfortunately, most relationships are based on self-interest – “What will I get in return?” (not simply “giving” or “doing” - we are always thinking about what we will get in return). Doing something totally without ulterior motives is very difficult for us. If we don't get back exactly what we give, we'll at least want some kind of recognition. This too is conditional – and the benefit is temporary and insignificant. We need to fight for things that last. The only thing we should want in return is our own Light, our own fulfillment. That is, if you find yourself in a relationship, simply give and don't worry about what you’ll get in return. When we give from the heart, energy returns. It doesn't matter if the reward comes from that person or from another. We need to focus on the real exchange: the exchange with Infinite Light. If we want to be a receiver for the Light, we need to act like the Light. One way to do this is to give unconditionally. Usually, we want to give conditionally, but we want people to give us unconditionally. The universe doesn't work that way. If you act conditionally, you'll end up with people who act conditionally. If we're always looking for what we're going to get in return, we'll build a place for chaos. If you want to build a place for the Light to shine, give without self-interest – forget what you might get in return. We need to find the strength to share without expecting anything in return. It is obvious that we cannot continually give to someone who does nothing to receive, because that would be Bread of Shame. But on a day to day basis, open your heart and give to others without expecting anything in return. If you receive something in return, great. We all have ulterior motives and we train hard to hide them. But by doing that, we create a mask and people can't see who we really are. Some have built a shell, others have built a thin layer, but it's difficult to connect with each other through these barriers. We have to share the deepest and truest essence of ourselves. This week, try to do just that: be real – about your desires, your opinions, your junk and your gifts. It is not an easy task, but it is a fundamental one.
