Wintering The Garden
As the days are getting colder and colder, and it is frequently freezing at night, Wintering The Garden becomes essential, if you want to see it beautifully abloom come Spring. Now is the ideal time to feed and enrich your soil, too; next year's harvest will reward your efforts!

Shout out to all my fellow gardeners who have a sloped yard, no heavy machinery, a limited budget, a job that takes up all your time, pets that can’t be trusted, children too curious for their own good, health issues that prevent you from getting out as much as you’d like, soil that seems to have been hit by a nuclear bomb, or any other common gardening problem. Remember, it’s the job of influencers to be constantly creating new garden projects, don’t let it make you feel insecure. If you grow one plant—or if you even try to grow one plant and fail—you’re still gardening. 🌸🌹🌺🌷🌻🌼

Late night wishful thinking but like
I think planting funky things around retention ponds should be more normalized!!
Like okay I get it retention ponds are meant to hold the runoff water from parking lots and drive throughs and the like so they aren’t exactly the cleanest water around. But like!!! Maybe this is different in other areas, but the only plants I ever see grow around retention ponds are cattails!! Which, like, are fine and great and dandy lets go cattails, but like
Where’s the whimsy?? Where are the flowers?? If I’ve got to see retention ponds whenever I go to a store or drive down the highway or pick up food for my mom, at least bring in some flowers!!
And it’ll benefit so much! A wider variety of plants can make it a more welcoming home to wildlife! Maybe the plants will filter some of the runoff stuff and the water can then be nicer for even more wildlife! Maybe the flowers can be a nice food source for butterflies and bees on their journeys and day trips!! And humans like seeing things be pretty!
Maybe its easier said than done! Maybe most places already do this and its just my city or state that doesn’t really I’d be willing to believe that! But lets get some color in these goddamn retention ponds!!
Swamp milkweed! Aquatic milkweed! Pickerelweed! Water lilies! Irises! Cardinalflower! Fuck it, put some goddamn duckweed in there!! Get some color in those things or so help me!!

Growing Tip: Marmande Tomatoes
Tumblr media
After sucessfully growing Cherry Tomatoes this past couple of years, I've become more ambitious this year and decided to grow bigger tomatoes! Not any bigger tomatoes either, but Marmande Tomatoes, these big, tasty, juicy Beefsteak heritage tomatoes, proudly displayed on many a Provençal market stall!
I sowed my Marmande tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) seedlings, a generous sprinkle over a mixture of good potting soil and a handful of compost in a flat-ish but wide enough pot on the 18th April. I covered the seeds with a light sprinkle of the same mixture, watered, dusted with grated coal to prevent damping off and took the pot upstairs, to the Nursery, just under the window with plenty of light, warmth and regular waterings.
A few days later, they were already sprouting. Quickly, the seedlings started growing proper leaves after their dicot cotyledon. As they grew, I thinned them, pinching off the weaker seedlings so the others had more room to expand.
On the 7th May, I potted two or three seedlings in small pots, filled with garden soil, potting soil and a handful of compost. Watered well and took them back up to the Nursery.
I continued tending to them, much like I did the Garden Cherry Tomatoes, until they started growing proper leaves, and sturdier stalks and reached about 12 centimetres/4.75 inches. I potted these in large pots in the garden filled with a mixture of garden soil, potting soil and a handful of compost a month later.
Tumblr media
In late July, the seedlings had grown nicely and started blooming. I used sturdy branches I had cut from the apple and pear trees in the Wintrer to stake them, as they would be heftier once the tomatoes started growing.
Tumblr media
And once the flowers were pollinated, it did not take long before tiny tomatoes indeed started growing!
Tumblr media
And then, they just kept growing!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And began ripening!
Tumblr media
Until I harvested my first Marmande Tomato on! And it was as fragrant and juicy and tasty as a gardener humbly wishes! Simply delicious.
I harvested three more today, and a couple are still ripening on the vine. They might have gotten a bit bigger, but there was plenty of rain by the end of the Summer! And now I know I shall sow them a little earlier next year.
For now, I am thoroughly enjoying these beautiful heritage gems!

lucanis' last question when interrogating zara's corpse -- whether illario also asked her to kill caterina -- is so telling. because if illario had done that, I actually do think lucanis would have killed him. (his standards are predictably wild and hilarious in a dark sort of way. listen I can forgive you for killing me that's fine understandable even but there's a limit to everything illario.) which is why he saves that question for last: it's the one thing he really does not want to know the answer to. because if the answer is yes, it's going to need action from him that would be so psychologically catastrophic that nothing the ossuary could do to him would compare, that would have been the end of him too, I feel, even with rook and the team there to try to catch him or pick up the pieces. I love how if you pay attention you can trace out the underlying hurt/logic already here, before it gets spelled out in inner demons. the logic lucanis' brain operates on is very sad and very consistent the whole way throughout the game.
#no wonder his brain has decided it best to stay frozen instead if it thinks moving might mean moving towards well. that.#lucanis dellamorte#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#I feel that when looking at this dude as he is at the time the game is set it is crucial to keep in mind#that he is actively going through at *least* three separate full on mental health crises at all times fjskah#he literally stays awake at night wondering if his brother killed their grandmother/maternal figure.#and if that means he's going to have to be the person to kill what little is left of house dellamorte and everything he's ever loved himsel#he doesn't want to but he's had a whole life of the idea that what he wants isn't particularly relevant to what is going to happen to him#quite aside from the torture year and demon/erosion of self dimensions of the situation#and also unprocessed childhood trauma doing a merry little jig over on the side as he tries to ignore it#'am I going to have to kill my brother (an act that would destroy what little might be left of my own soul)' 24/7 in those neurons#are we surprised he is a bit weird about intimacy. a teensy bit preoccupied at times. it would be so much weirder if he wasn't#the true testament to the depth and intensity of the connection between him and rook is that that intimacy manages to grow#AT ALL but also#with such safe unbudgeable roots in the middle of the on-fire hurricane-zone garden that is lucanis' mind for most of the game#and rook's matching blood magic-enhanced haze of grief and denial of reality/compartmentalization on the other side lol#the mutual 'you met me at a strange time in my life' and 'that's okay' of it all. unspeakable.
