Our radius project is finally complete and here are our final pieces displayed together.

And here are my own final pieces:

This piece is a collection of imagery inspired by the passage of time and the role of women, particularly in agriculture.

I was inspired by my grandmothers China plates when it came to the Prussian blue colour and the style of painting for the buildings.

I have displayed imagery related to my theme, the actual buildings themselves as a centre point. The woman with the headscarf a garment often worn by women shopping at or selling produce at the milk market back in the day. The head and foot of a chicken along with a butcher knife, a symbol of women’s main source of independent women being with the poultry and a reference to how at open market the chickens were beheaded, a chick word often used to describe women is beheaded but flowers bloom from its neck as a sign of hope, change and progression through time.

The dog in a pram is inspired by a local woman who put her dog in a pram around the milk market, I simply thought that this was a quirky image and harkened back to the maternal role of women in a humorous sense.

Final thoughts:

It was great to see everyone’s work and to hear everyone talk about their pieces, I love how everyone can interpret different pieces in different ways and it was a cool opportunity to see our art and others art through new lenses, hearing others thoughts also gave me some great insights and ideas for future projects.

Basketball’s Canvas

Pick-up basketball games are being played at playgrounds and courts all around the world. So much so, that for many, not only has it become a daily routine, but also a way of life. Rather than being a simple pastime, there are those who consider the court as a means to prove themselves and their skills. Others find joy in the sport and use these spaces as epicenters for a larger community. Through this interaction, many courts have become spaces for creativity, design and street-art.

Although it is common to find these fruitful atmospheres in big cities across Europe, basketball hasn‘t had this influence on the cities and people in Switzerland.

With our project the existing target building would be transformed into a place that births and fosters a new community in the area of Friesenberg and inspires people to be part of the new canvas for the sport.

The existing concrete architecture serves as a spatial and structural spine with the different playing grounds, the roof structure and viewing spaces extending to all sides. While the interiors provide spaces for changing rooms, facilities and act as the main movement area for visitors, players and sprayers, the outside levels form different informal streetball courts which are adapted to their immediate surroundings. To enable the happening of official games, a standardized court on the center level shapes the new arena where viewers are able to witness game time from the concrete beam, underneath it and the new stand stretching out from one of the towers.

Concentrating on the hoop as the focal point in these images, the context changes as its juxtaposed in the different streetball courts, where people from various age groups, ethnicities and backgrounds intermingle and contribute to the open, casual and playful atmosphere. Yet, the two main themes of colors and reusing-recycling-readapting remains present, which becomes clear when looking at the backboard and the court surface.

This reuse of existing materials creates challenges and opportunities. After a thorough analysis of all the objects on site different interventions further shape the arena and its bricolage and complex character. While the wood planks which create the current facade of the structure are reserviced and reused for supports for the roof structure, the newly accessible viewing level and the seating area of the new stand, the existing steel beams are relocated to form the truss roof and supports for the hoops. To ensure games on the frequent rainy days in Zurich, the current system of moving corrugated metal sheets is rethought to create a retractable roof. Comparatively, very few new materials are added – like glass for roof windows and cement for foundations.

For the court surfaces a new material cycle was introduced. Through the processing of used shoes, in detail their rubber soles, new playing surfaces are created. The soles become granules, the granules are compressed into rubber plates and these construct the top layer of the courts. Through this procedure the colorful sprinkled floors create a transition from the natural predominant colors to the vibrant design.

This color scheme based on the analysis of the present colors in the background generates different scenes and atmospheres from each point of view and simultaneously the first layer of the legal street-art space. Shades of orange, blue, pink and red form a vivid backdrop for games. The colors allow the place to reveal an aesthetic and cultural movement that is taking place, even when the courts are not in use.

In conclusion the design should paint a new portrait of the neighborhood, while reflecting basketball's universal appeal and its ability to create a space far more interesting than just to play ball.

Basketball’s Canvas

Blues to the south-west, greens in the direction of north-east, greyish colors towards the north-west and beige to brown tones to the south-east. This is how we experienced the colors behind each side of the structure of the Albisgütli’s shooting range.

Every side of the canvas is painted in the adapted complementary color of its background. Different views from each point of perspective are enabled, which contributes to the places’ playfulness. The grounds of the courts shall resume this color concept, in a more restrained manner. To manufacture it, used shoes of people living in Zurich will be collected at the ERZ and turned into granules.

Shoes are not the only thing being repurposed, which becomes clear in the energy diagram. Existing materials on site are removed and reused differently, while still keeping some techniques and functions they’ve had before. Comparatively, very few new materials are added – like glass for roof windows and cement for foundations.

The idea of enabling informal as well as formal games, as well as the vision that the place is even attractive when there is no ongoing game by making it a place of art, is still crucial. The different functions are recognizable in their spatial organization as well as in their surfaces.

Living in Switzerland entails most diverse weather conditions. For us it is important, that this fact should not prevent people from playing basketball. In consequence, a retractable roof structure above the main court is introduced. Corrugated metal sheets attached to steel frames and connected with steel sliding rails can be opened and closed with a pulley system – redrawing the current method of pulling up targets at the shooting range.

Basketball’s Canvas

The team reaches the new sports facility and enters through one of the side entrances. They make their way through the old concrete architecture into the underground where they get changed and ready for their upcoming game. Through the skylight they experience the game which they live for. Meanwhile spectators arrive via tram and while they proceed towards the old target structure, they see the vibrant colors with the Uetliberg in the background. Arriving at the basketball arena they feel the energy of the nearing game with players practicing on the multitude of streetball courts. They pass the underground court and move up through the tower into the concrete beam, players following closely behind. With the start of the game all the players progress to the main court, spectators take their position from the different levels to watch the kickoff and street-artists leave their ongoing artwork behind to see the teams in action. Different possibilities from where to watch the game allow the spectators to move around and get to experience the entertainment from different perspectives.

While clouds are building up and a quick rainfall is expected the organizers slide the corrugated metal roof into a closed position and thus allow the game to continue in the dry. Simultaneously the viewers find cover under the concrete beam. While the play is reaching its final quarter and the showers have ended, the metal sheets are retracted again and the last minutes of the game are experienced under the open sky and viewers wathing from all the different levels. Following the ending of the game the two teams go back to their changing rooms, some spectators wander back towards the city while others stay and play some more ball and watch the artists continuing their work.

With the day coming to an end and all the players, visitors and artists having left the space, another day of excitement has concluded and a new layer of street art on basketball’s canvas is waiting to be seen.

Basketball’s Canvas

When designing our basketball arena, we follow one overarching design principle: reuse, relocation and recycling. Materials found on site are repurposed, whereas occurring building techniques are taken into account.The main beams will be left almost untouched, having the function of a spine – courts extend from it and visitors as well as players use it as a movement space. It also serves as the supporting structure for the retractable roof. Its construction is inspired by the current mechanism, where corrugated metal sheets need to be movable in order to move out targets.  

The removal of concrete roofs enables a completely different spatial experience of playing basketball – underground, partially covered and open-air. Also, the concrete can be recycled and reused as gravel for the base layer for the court surface. In its ecological process we found resemblance in how old and unsold shoes, as well as manufacturing scrap are turned into granules and are reused for courts – this will become the court’s top layer. 

One particular shoe – Nike’s Space Hippie – remembered us of our own project in two aspects. On one hand it is recycled to 90% and as Nike mentions: “it drives a new vision for how things are made, used and, ultimately, reused. Nike said the shoe is a first step towards employing the process of the circular economy, which aims to eliminate waste and pollution from manufacturing. We believe the future for product will be circular.“ (https://news.nike.com/news/space-hippie)  The shoe’s sole is made out of recycled waste rubber that has been ground down into granules and can be turned again into a court surface at the Albisgütli Schiessanlage in a few years from now.  On the other hand, the shoe’s sole is colorful and leads us to our color concept. 

The extracted colors serve as the first layer of the Basketball’s canvas. Graffiti’s on site have shown an analogy to streetball courts found in the U.S., which is why we want to keep this characteristic of art and create a place where basketball, color and people.
