So I am replaying Skyward Sword and gosh darn it why do all the little birds vibe and flock to Groose? (I mean we are chasing after them with a big ol' net but shhhh.) I just want to be friends!

Groose shut up. This is where our true rivalry begins. He's one-upped us with the birbs. He may be the true bird whisperer. I love the headcanon that sky here is a birb whisperer and can be tolerated by the cuccos. He wouldn't harm them anyway. Accidents can happen. There's birds are classified as enemies in Skyward sword. There's the Hork who will regurgitate boulders onto your head.

But worst of all is the Guay. (I think that what they're called.) there the crow-like birds. They attack you when you get too close but also will poop on your head. poor link.

Maybe they are the Cucco's ancestors? I think they might be in every Zelda game? The crow enemy beef is on-site for link. Timeline wise could be the longest grudge ever. Truly this is the fate that is bound together forever by hate for the other. Ganon who?

Ranking Zelda stories because I am bored

Happy Easter and Trans Visibility Day! I'm bored and wanted to rank the stories of the 3D Zelda games. Spoilers of course. Ranked from favorite (top) to weakest (bottom). I also won't be including WInd Waker because I never beat it (not the game's fault, I bought HD during the Switch's lifecycle and got tired of the Wii U gamepad). A lot of my problems are just personal gripes and not really criticisms.

Tears of the Kingdom: Controversial placement, I know (I have been literally harassed SEVERAL times over this take, I am disappointed in humanity). It has its issues, but like, what thing DOESN'T have flaws? Everything is flawed, it came free with your entertainment. The plot beats for Tears of the Kingdom are absolutely insane. The Imprisoning War and the events leading up to it all felt connected and relevant to each other and the events in the present. Not to mention watching stuff like the Molduga memory and the Imprisoning War itself was extremely hype. Seeing the interactions between Sonia, Rauru, Zelda and Mineru got me really attached to these characters. The events in the present also feel meaningful and urgent. Your friends from the previous game are ACTUALLY in trouble in this game and not just being stalked by a giant robot that's doing nothing. The Sages also felt more connected than the Champions ever did. The camera not being locked behind a backtracking quest this time was cool too. Overall, this game's story hit the hardest, especially with the Dragon Tears quest.

Skyward Sword: Great story with a great cast. Backtracking is a bit of a pain and could have been handled better, but I love the events of the game. Groose's character development is truly excellent. Link and Zelda having a connection also assisted in making the adventure hitting harder.

Twilight Princess: As a former Twilight Princess hater, I would like to apologize to this game. I had a biased hatred against the game because I thought it was just TP fans that were toxic when in reality its just the Zelda fanbase as a whole that has a massive toxicity problem (not all Zelda fans are toxic). The whole beginning segment with Ordon Village and the Twili Realm sets up Link's quest perfectly. The story as a whole is really great until Ganondorf. Ganondorf in this game is genuinely really weak as a character, same with Zelda. They at least have the manga to help them but still...

Majora's Mask: I love the concept for this game's story and for the most part its really well done. Its just short and a lot of the interesting stuff is in the side quests. This is totally fine because it helps get me invested in the world, but most side quests are just... meh. Anju/Kafei, the grandma stories and the Romani Ranch quest lines (including the Ranch Race with the Gorman Brothers) are really great though.

Breath of the Wild: Man... This game's backstory is SO, SO, SO GOOD. Like wow is it good. I just HATE how its told. Stuff that would be cool to see is NEVER shown. Like why not show us Zelda and Link vs Calamity Ganon? Not to mention the Camera backtracking quest... I will say, at least it made the Champion's Tunic plot relevant. TotK should've made the Leathers important. Also the Divine Beast quests just don't sit right with me (outside of the Gerudo one, that one was really great). The Divine Beast fights are incredible though, they make up for the atrocious dungeon bosses.

Ocarina of Time: Too boring and unoriginal for me. Yes, TotK takes a lot from BotW's style of story, but it at least builds upon it and has unique aspects like Crisis at Hyrule Castle and Mineru's entire questline. I do like how Ganondorf mocks Link, especially in the Forest Temple, as it makes him more relevant. Ganondorf waiting until Zelda gave Link the Light Arrows just was incompetent though.

Alright, that's my ranking of each 3D Zelda story I have an opinion on. I very much expect disagreement (especially with TotK) and that's fine, just please do not attack me over this stuff. Its just opinions. I've been harassed way too much over my takes on TotK, its tiring.

Day 3- solitary confinement: lbl, spirit is held hostage and is losing his mind.

Day 4- shock: kotg, Ammon and Orman are exploring a ruin with Terrako, suddenly all technology goes out in an electrifying way, including Ammon’s prosthetic.

Day 5- debris, pinned down: lbl, Warriors gets trapped under rocks after an explosion, and he and Hyrule hope they can get out.

Day 6- alternate prompt, reluctant whumper: original loz au, Link hurts himself and doesn’t want Beck to know.

Day 7- alternate prompt, shaking: vw, Vio brings Shadow back and he’s not vibing.

Day 8- outnumbered: sae, wolfos attack and Rusl refuses to fight one, even when it’s trying to kill him.

Day 9- mistaken identity, you’re a liar: lbl, Wild and Windy meet a fake Hyrule and get abducted by the yiga.

Day 10- alternate prompt, panic: lot, Rusl is teaching the kids how to fight, but the idea of fighting monsters scares Talo.

Day 11- captivity, no one will find you: kotg, young Ammon and his brother get kidnapped by yiga during an errand.

Day 12- insomnia: original loz au, Zelda can’t sleep and Link accompanies her alongside his cat biscuit.

Day 13- infection: thof, Link has an infection but he refuses to let Groose or Farore check it out.

Day 14- water inhalation: lbl, Sky goes to rescue Twi after he disappeared underwater for six hours

Day 15- makeshift bandages: lbl and sae, Rusl accidentally throws a spear at mermaid Legend.

Day 16- flatline: kotg, continuation of day 11, Ammon and Georgie try to escape, but it doesn’t go well.

Day 17- collar, touch aversion, leave me alone: sae and vs, Vaati and Ghirahim accidentally kidnap Linebeck.

Day 18- blindfold, tortured for information: lbl, continuation of day 9, Windy gets tortured for information on Hyrule, but he’s a tough cookie.

Day 19- floral bouquet: TCOD, Maria and Link visit his parent’s grave on the anniversary of their death.

Day 20- found family: tp, RUSL ADOPTS LINK DBSJSBSKSBK

Day 21- restraints, don’t move: vw, after Vio brings back Shadow, he accidentally brings another, dangerous person back as well.

Day 22- glass shard, vehicular accident: sae, Kass finds Linebeck with a concussion and Benji impaled with glass from a boat crash.

Day 23- shadows, stalking, who’s there: lbl, Twi finds a kitty and defends it with his life.

Day 24- alternate prompt, aftermath of a failure: AOC, Revali teaches Zelda how to use a bow so she can use the bow of light.

Day 25- alternate prompt, betrayal: sae, Ingo takes over the ranch in Time and Talon’s absence.

Day 26- working till exhaustion, you look awful: lot, Link has a fever but works till the point of collapse.

Day 27- matches, scars: sae, Leon and Linebeck find themselves trapped in a cave, and Leon discovers a nasty scar that Linebeck has.

Day 28- bloody knife: lbl, Hyrule gets attacked by a puppet of the puppeteer and gets poisoned with magic draining poison.

Day 29- troubled past resurfacing: lbl and sae, Wild meets Ammon and it goes as well as you’d expect.

Day 30- bridal carry: lbl and sae, Time and Talon find Malon in Gerudo desert. Some of the boys reunite with their dads!

Day 31- emptiness, setbacks, take it easy: lbl and sae, the rest of the boys reunite with their dads, but something bad happens

I wasn't actually planning on giving them nicknames, lol. Except for Wanderer's, I don't think there's ever going to be a situation where two Zeldas will be together where I can't use a name they already have (Sheik) or another distinguisher (Queen vs Princess). But maybe I'll give them nicknames anyway for fun

But. Speaking of Wanderer. He's married to his (original) Zelda. They got married when they were like 18 to get her advisors off her back and, even with his constant absences, it hasn't been completely for the bit since they were 20. Just talk about it, you fools, you could be so happy

(He's not the only one. HW was in love with Sheik, and Zelda now too, he supposes. He doesn't like thinking about it. She doesn't either, for different reasons)

SS Zelda, who, if I did give a name to, would be either Lilac or Lavender, is the bearer of the curse (Hylia). She's overworked constantly, bc she feels that it's her duty as Hylia. Feather and Groose dragged her back to being Zelda, but now Feather is gone... oh boy. Let's hope she doesn't overwork herself even more trying to get him back! Just don't rip a hole in the space time continuum, mkay?

Colors's (working name for FS Link) Zelda is doing great. She's queen and she's working out all her frustrations by getting buff in the forge. She and Green could have a thing if I deem it funny enough but also she would leave her in a heartbeat if she ever met Linkle. (Green understands. Linkle is cool.)

Tetra. She's very supportive of her cringefail first mate (she thinks it's funny when he messes up). No more notes because, while I've not watched a WW playthrough yet, I doubt I can improve on her. (Also because I haven't watched a WW playthrough yet.)

Bitchy ranting about botw/totk link n zelda below

In relation to the last post. I know I'm kind of mean to botw/totk link and zelda's relationship but man when I beat TotK I could not stop thinking about the contrast between the scene where Zelda is freed from the crystal in SS vs how Link treats Zelda post-fall in TotK. Like in SS when Zelda collapses, Link runs forward to catch her, how he escorts her out there holding her hand, how they both keep looking at eachother and laughing whenever Groose gets emotional.

And then in TotK after they fall from the sky and Link carries Zelda out of the pond he just... kneels, and doesn't make a single other motion to help her afterwards. Like, Zelda just transformed back into a person after spending a bajillion years as a mindless dragon and then fell from the statosphere into a shallow pond and you're not even going to her help sit up? You're just going to kneel there??? Not going to offer her any sort of comfort?????

I think... this post has helped me find words for one of my major problems with botw/totk Link and Zelda: they have all these moments that are supposed to be big grand setpiece moments (him rescuing her from Yiga assassins, the last catch) but they feel hollow because outside of those moments there are so few of the little moments that show subtle care, particularly from Link to Zelda. I'm not saying they don't exist (Link taking the torch from Zelda is one example) but I wish there were more of them. Because it feels like whenever Zelda needs some sort of emotional support Link leaves her high and dry. You don't even have to make him less of a stoic, stalwart knight to do it! I was rewatching the botw memory where Rhoam is a terrible father to her and all I could think about was how much better the scene would be if it had gone on for a few more seconds and shown Link rising from his kneeling position after the king leaves and putting his hand on Zelda's shoulder. That could've done so much!!! But instead he's always kneeling, barely looking at her, refusing to touch her unless absolutely necessary. It's borderline uncomfortable to watch.

Meanwhile in SS Link and Zelda DO have those moments of casual closeness, showing they care for eachother, enforcing they're important to eachother in subtle ways, and the relationship between them feels so much more lively and substantial because of it. And outside of skyward sword, I keep thinking to that scene in Spirit Tracks where after Malladus is defeated and the Lokomo leave, Link and Zelda just quietly hold hands in mutual reassurance that, it's over. We're okay. Everything's going to be alright now. Hell, these scenes even work- work even better IMO- outside of a romantic context, because it doesn't need to be A Romance for it to be obvious they have a close bond.

In conclusion Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks are still the games with the best Link-Zelda relationship of all time

Kind of a continuation of my Link Rival post where in the tags I mentioned that I thought it was interesting to have a Rito be Link’s rival.

I had said that it might have worked too for a Zora, if they wanted to go with the “Rito have mastery of the air” while “Zora have mastery of the water”.

I rolled in my head why or why it wouldn’t have worked if they had made a Goron or Gerudo Link’s rival.

I think a given, making a Gerudo as Link’s rival is already kind of stepping on Ganondorf’s territory, in that, we have two Gerudo opposing Link, even if the rival isn’t necessarily an enemy.

As for a Goron, I can see it work in a way where the Goron is young and brash, and boasts physical power. (So like, I’d imagine a Goron Groose, without the crush on Zelda, and less noble of the Gorons, etc.) Essentially, being similar in age is necessary for there to feel like a true rivalry, and being loud vs Link’s lack of speech.

Imo, the existence of Impa in AoC feels really redundant (aside from game play) since Link is supposed to be the one following and protecting Zelda. So, I guess Impa could be regarded as a rival, if she ever thought her position was challenged.

While Twilight was chosen to be the hero by the gods, he was never an only child. His younger twin brother, Rus, was also raised on a farm but was out of Ordon and nearly out of Hyrule as a whole during the events of Twilight Princess. He wasn't able to escape the Twilight entirely, but he doesn't remember much of what happened. He works alongside his brother in the aftermath to clean up the remaining monsters, learning what Link experienced and being there to support him as best he can.

Rus can't wield a sword to save his life. He depends entirely on his crossbow, but he's a good shot and cleaning out the monsters helped hone that further. He's got similar raw strength to his brother, but still usually loses in their wrestling matches.

Despite being adults, Twilight and Rus are still brothers. They still argue and mess with each other regularly, though they try to keep it out of sight from the kids. They don't always succeed. Twilight was the more outgoing of the two before going off on his adventure, though the time immediately following saw Rus taking that role instead. Rus doesn't see himself as withdrawn or secluded from others, just... quiet. He's usually not the type to go out of his way for conversation, but it's certainly something he's gotten better at.

Leadership doesn't come quite as naturally to Rus as it did to Twilight, but he's still respected more often than Shields is. It certainly helps that Rus is taller and doesn't make snide remarks about his teammates. Light-hearted jabs, yes, and finding those boundaries is still an ongoing struggle, but rude comments are off the table. A team that doesn't like each other is a lot harder to direct in a fight.

[designer's notes: yes i made Link's Crossbow Training and Twilight Princess two different characters. my canon now >:) Rus's name is sort of a diminutive/corruption of "Groose", as the stories say he was one of the three who helped found Hyrule. being Twilight's twin, he took a lot of design cues from there but changed them up. mirrored hair, opposite ends of the ears pierced, opposite colors on their belt-things, signs of adventure vs a common life, etc... He's got a bit more than just regular Ordonian clothes cause he did go out and kill monsters and such, but I might go back and emphasize the whole "didn't go on a life-changing adventure" thing. still want to incorporate at least some of a horn from the Fossil Stallord into his design.]

To be fair to Link, those are all fair responses to the many moods of Groose.

And like, at this point, Groose and Link aren't friends. In fact, Groose has done nothing but make Links life hell up to this point. "Not my problem" is fair considering what's at stake (Zelda and the WORLD vs comforting Groose as he has a much smaller crisis). I know I babble a lot about Groose's character growth, but Link does some too. He becomes friends with Groose as much as Groose becomes friends with him. Link wasn't out to make a friendship with the red-head, and it's a neat touch in game that he isn't even given the option of speaking to Groose. Like, that's not a thing he does. Only Groose talks if you go up to him and it's all overhead.

Hehe since you asked… UwU I’ll explain top to bottom from that one image

Fluffy is the predecessor to Cursed. It’s no secret anymore cuz it was sorta revealed in the comic already if you remember what he looks like but he’s also Cursed’s grandfather :) Idk what he did specifically I’m still tryna figure it out but I know some major things he did was that he rescued the young prince since some evil (possibly Vaati) kidnapped him for his divine magic. Typically it’s a princess with the goddesses blood in her veins but I’m like… there had to be a dude right? It would be exceptionally rare but that prince had the power of the goddesses :) and fluffy also tried to protect Ordon from the tyrant king who tried to force Ordonians to submit to his will. There would’ve been some intense bloodshed but there was a bright light and all the Ordonians disappeared. So ordon is a ghost town. Where’d they go? 🤔 when his oldest son Taril was like, 10-14 he left mysteriously and never returned.

Then Cursed I can’t talk about much cuz his story is being explored in @thecurseofdemisecomic which I haven’t worked on in a hot second and I need motivation again cuz it’s kinda dying unfortunately. I’m not even done with arc one 😭😭 but you can read some of it there. If ya want :) the main premise is that Ganondorf is actively hunting down the hero of Hyrule. Only issue, the hero always appears from the most random spots ever. So he’s hard to find

Malakan is… confusing to me. He’s Cursed’s successor and idk what to do anymore with it. It was gonna be called the Curse of Hylia but truthfully the lore for that doesn’t fit the lore I had anymore. I feel like Hylia is truly gone, living on through Zelda, so idk what’s going on there. But the art I made was cute lol. Anyways yeah idk what to do with him, he’s just hangin out. He’s also Cursed’s like, great grandson? Mayhaps? But yeah, he was like, bffs with Ganondorf and Zelda. It was one of those ;)

Moon is my son and my baby. His whole story I almost made a comic for but nothing has happened yet. Basically hes from the dark timeline to TCOD where the hero was murdered and the master sword gone. The world fought back for a long while, but without the master sword, the world inevitably was nearly destroyed, with Demise winning (in this Demise and Ganondorf started working together). The world was a barren wasteland and slavery was common. Moon was a slave and he was thrown into a pit after he fought back against the slavers to protect someone. The golden three returned to Hyrule to salvage what they could, Farore, being the goddess of the life, wanting to save it entirely. Because of Moon’s courage, she sent him the Triforce of course before being cursed into a little bunny. Demise couldn’t kill her but he sure as heck humiliated her with that form. Moon finds a zelda and after discovering his Triforce of courage (zelda having the Triforce of wisdom), she sent him to find the shards of the Triforce of power, which was shattered when she tried to defeat the evil. Moon finds Farore and they search for the shards, eventually restoring Hyrule with the Triforce. Idk what specifically happens after that but he meets Groose, he gets magic, and it’s fun :) Moon is deaf but he never learned how to communicate, like ever, so it was a rocky road for him until he learned sign language. He’s also Skord Link’s direct ancestor UwU idk why but that happened. That’s why Sky kinda looks like him! It was an accident but I leaned into it!

Then Real. He’s a fun kiddo. Basically his story is that he’s some kid who moved to Hyrule after his father passed away, and the supposed hero of Hyrule went searching for the master sword with his help. But Real ended up being the one to draw the sword and having the hero’s spirit. The fake hero did not like this and was raised to believe he was the true hero, so let’s just say he did some bad things. He took Real to try to steal his Triforce of courage cuz he believed that would get him the master sword, and Real was able to escape. He meets Beck (or Linebeck the 87th ;)) and is able to convince him to help him. They run away from “Fake” despite the many tricks he throws their way ( he pretends he’s Real’s father at some point but Beck knew that his father died. Also Fake is like, 18 years old lmao). Idk what happens after that. Beck has a son that supposedly died by a creature that steals force (but he doesn’t) and it possibly takes Beck and there’s this whole thing. Idk the ending is messy but that’s the gist of it! I actually did a whumptober with Beck and Real! Fun times! Also Real loses his eye 😔

And then Flower… oh my baby Flower. He’s such a good boy and has such a gentle soul. This is in Moon’s timeline. Because the death of the hero caused so much destruction, the royal family started searching for the hero to protect him. But it got a little extreme and Flower was forcefully taken as a baby (this leads into Real’s story with the royal family taking the wrong baby). He was raised by the sages, specifically the Sage of light named Kaeru, who is a terrible and abusive person. Flower loves animals and has a blue cuccoo named Nitrogen thanks to the folks on discord and he meets a friendly Moblin too. Zelda in this is really pushed by Kaeru and he’s noticeably exhausted. There’s no big plot, it’s just Flower hangin out. I also have a whumptober fic with him and Zelda lol. I love him

And then they’re not here but there’s also Rayne and Mushroom!

Rayne is the hero in the villain squad au! He has an older brother and is seen as a failure :D And Mushroom is a random child who was raised by a Goron! Idk how else to explain them, mushroom is so silly.
