Storia Di Musica #304 - Bob Dylan, Bringing It Al Back Home, 1965

Ogni anno ho raccontato un disco di Bob Dylan. Prescindere da Dylan è impossibile per il rock, e arriva in luoghi, stili e musicisti che a prima vista sembrano lontani anni luci da lui. Eppure, il suo è uno degli ingranaggi cruciali che mette in moto la macchina della musica popolare occidentale (e non solo) che è arrivata fino ad oggi. Il disco di oggi è l'occasione per un viaggio alquanto insolito, che svelerò alla fine, per chiudere il 2023 musicale. Il disco di oggi nasce da alcune idee che erano state scartate per quello precedente, Another Side Of Bob Dylan del 1964. Sebbene ancora legato al folk, quel disco scopre un lato introspettivo che il Dylan di quei tempi ancora doveva scandagliare: inizia quindi a mettere di lato (sebbene non lo abbandonerà mai del tutto) il lato politico e sociale (dello stesso anno è The Times They Are A-Changin') per quello privato. Inoltre c'è la necessità musicale di legare insieme il folk dei primordi con le nuove pulsioni del rock'n'roll, che secondo Dylan gli permetterebbero maggiore libertà creativa. Decide quindi di andare a vivere in una piccola villetta di campagna a Woodstock, proprio a pochi km dalla spianata che pochi anni più tardi fu teatro di una immensa folla rock, casa di proprietà del suo manager Albert Grossman. Dylan adora quel posto, e ci passa tutta l'estate. Dopo pochi giorni, è raggiunto da Joan Baez, che racconta la routine del menestrello di Duluth: passava la giornata alla macchina da scrivere, accompagnato incessantemente da sigarette e bottiglie di vino, e spesso nel cuore della notte avendo avuto una intuizione si metteva a scrivere senza soluzioni di continuità. Dylan è cauto, e affina tutti i particolari: alla prima sessione di registrazione canta da solo acustico. Il giorno dopo, 14 Gennaio 1965 che nella storia del rock è un giorno importante, si presenta con una band elettrica: i chitarristi Al Gorgoni, Kenneth Rankin, e il grande Bruce Langhorne, il pianista Paul Griffin, i bassisti Joseph Macho Jr. e William E. Lee, e il batterista Bobby Gregg. Registrano per ore, e le canzoni volano veloci e in poche ore, quando è notte fonda, è pronto metà disco. La sera successiva, il 15 Gennaio, Dylan dopo cena si presenta con una nuova band, tra cui John P. Hammond, che diventerà suo fido braccio destro negli anni a seguire, e John Sebastian, che diventerà famoso con i Lovin' Spoonful. Di questa sessione però non fu salvato nulla, così il 16 torna in studio con tutti i musicisti e finisce di registrare il disco. Che secondo il racconto dei presenti fu tutto di first takes, cioè canzoni registrate e considerate buone dopo solo una registrazione. Dylan, timoroso che il passaggio totale alla musica elettrica fosse un passo troppo lungo, decide di dividere il disco a metà con canzoni vecchia maniera musicalmente, ma che nei testi e nelle idee lo propongono del tutto nuovo: un surrealismo fantastico che lega Rimbaud alla beat generation, e che inizia a popolare lo scenario della musica giovanile di luoghi e personaggi che diventeranno archetipi.

Il 22 Marzo 1965 viene pubblicato Bringing It All Back Home dalla Columbia. Verrà distribuito in alcuni paesi con il titolo di Subterrean Homesick Blues, nome del primo singolo, ma ciò che importa è che è uno dei più grandi dischi di Dylan, ergo, è uno dei più grandi dischi della storia del rock. Perchè riesce nell'intento che si era prefissato, cioè trovare un legame credibile tra la tradizione folk, il blues e il nascente rock, creando paesaggi lirici che sconvolgono, consegnando alla storia canzoni mito su cui tutti hanno preso spunto. La sequenza di canzoni è ormai a quasi 60 anni dall'uscita un greatest hits: Subterrean Homesick Blues è il biglietto d'ingresso nel mondo elettrico, e passa anche alla storia per l'innovativo videoclip, famosissimo e stracitato, di Dylan con i cartelli di parole chiavi del testo, con Allen Ginsberg che passeggia sullo sfondo di una vecchia fabbrica in rovina. Il testo, che utilizza anche espressioni da strada, è una infinita carrellata di riferimenti, più o meno chiari, alla società, alla politica, al giornalismo, e inizia a creare delle espressioni che diventeranno futuri slogan tra studenti, manifestanti per i diritti civile e così via (il più famoso You don't need a weather man\To know which way the wind blows). She Belongs To Me è l'ennesima novità stilistica: la prima figura di "donna ammaliatrice" (definizione di uno dei massimi studiosi di Dylan, Robert Shelton) con cui esiste un rapporto difficoltoso, sebbene non si sappia chi sia realmente l'spirazione, le più accreditate sono Suze Rotolo, la sua ex fidanzata che sta con lui sulla copertina di Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, sua sodale, Nico, la cantante svedese che conobbe alla Factory di Warhol e che canterà con i Velvet Underground o forse Sara Lownds, quella che diventerà sua moglie poche settimane dopo l'uscita del disco. Ogni canzone diventerà un'icona: Maggie's Farm, probabilmente un blues contro ogni forma di sfruttamento; On The Road Again è una dichiarazione profetica sul rapporto Dylan-successo, dove il primo spesso sceglie la lontananza e l'autoesilio, impaurito da quello che succede; It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), tutta acustica, è uno dei massimi capolavori lirici dylaniani, con una carrellata drammatica per tensione e suggestione di immagini e sensazioni che esprimono un impellente desiderio di critica nei confronti dell'ipocrisia, del consumismo, dei sostenitori della guerra, e della cultura americana contemporanea, che rispetto al Dylan folk stavolta non si risolve in un ottimismo rivoluzionario, ma in un arrabbiato status quo da osservare. Ricordo altre due perle: It's All Over Now, Baby Blue, Dylan alla chitarra acustica e all'armonica a bocca e William E. Lee al basso come unica strumentazione, è un'altra ballata storica, dai mille significati (chi sia o cosa sia Baby Blue, per esempio) ma la canzone più famosa è senza dubbio Mr. Tambourine Man, altra canzone dai mille significati e simbolismi, che diventerà un soprannome dello stesso Dylan, e oggetto di centinaia di saggi, anche accademici, alla ricerca dei messaggi più reconditi di questo vagabondo con tamburo intento a suonare una canzone per lui mentre la notte sta per terminare avviandosi verso il mattino tintinnante.

Il disco è un successo: numero 6 nella classifica americana, addirittura numero 1 in Gran Bretagna, dove in quei mesi inizia una vera e proprio Dylanmania. E sarà uno dei più coverizzati di sempre: i Byrds lo riprenderanno quasi del tutto, e molte delle loro versioni di questi brani diventeranno famose, anche per l'uso nelle colonne sonore, da ricordare quelle in Easy Rider. Ma non tutti furono folgorati, e non posso non ricordare l'episodio che avvenne al Festival Di Newport: il 25 luglio 1965 Dylan si presentò sul palcoscenico non come cantante solista con chitarra e armonica come suo solito, ma con una chitarra elettrica accompagnato dalla Paul Butterfield Blues Band, formidabile band di blues elettrico. Qui succede questo: non si sa nemmeno bene se fosse colpa dell'acustica che non funzionava, ma il pubblico iniziò a fischiare Dylan, che dopo un paio di brani lasciò il palco; gli organizzatori lo convinsero a ritornare, solo con armonica e chitarra, per una sessione solo acustica che leggenda vuole finisca con It's All Over Now (Baby Blue), da allora canzone anche per sancire un passaggio epocale nella vita delle persone deluse dai cambiamenti.

Rimane da raccontare la copertina: Daniel Kramer con una lente distorsiva fotografa Dylan in un salotto con una donna, Sally Grossman, moglie dell'allora manager di Dylan, Albert Grossman. Sul tavolino tra i due dischi famosi Keep On Pushing de The Impressions, King Of The Delta Blues Singers di Robert Johnson, India's Master Musician di Ravi Shakar, Sings Berlin Theatre Songs by Kurt Weill di Lotte Leyna e l'amico Eric Von Schmidt con The Folk Blues Of Eric Von Schmidt; dietro Sally Grossman, seminascosto da un cuscino, c'è il lato superiore della copertina dell'album Another Side Of Bob Dylan, e sotto il suo braccio destro, una copia della rivista Time con Lyndon B. Johnson in copertina. Sulla mensola del camino, alla sinistra del dipinto, si vede l'album di Lord Buckley The Best Of Lord Buckley. Compare un gatto, che si chiamava Rolling Stone, Dylan indossa dei gemelli regalati da Joan Baez e in primo piano, in basso a sinistra della fotografia, campeggia un cartello con su scritto Fallout Shelter (rifugio antiatomico). Questo tavolino sarò il punto di partenza di nuove storie, nel nome di Dylan e di uno dei dischi fondamentali della storia.

Pirates Rally Late To Beat Twins.

Twins 3 Pirates 5 W-Anderson (1-0) L-Sands (1-1)

The Minnesota Twins had their first off day of the spring yesterday. The team returned to action in Bradenton against the Pirates this afternoon. Pitching dominated early as Louie Varland threw up three scoreless innings and Martin Perez tossed four shutout innings. The Pirates started the scoring as Ke'Bryan Hayes crushed a Brock Stewart slider out to left for a solo homer in the fourth. The Twins answered in the fifth when Trevor Larnach belted a Roansy Contreras slider out to right for a solo shot of his own to tie the game at one. The Pirates responded in the sixth as Andrew McCutchen hammered a Josh Staumont fastball out to center for a solo homer. Pittsburgh retook the lead after six innings of play. The Twins wouldn't go away in the seventh when Alex Kirilloff lined a one-out single to right. Austin Martin doubled him home to retie the game. Trevor Larnach followed and lined a run-scoring single to right to put the Twins up 3-2. The Pirates came right back with a Jake Lamb double in the bottom of the seventh. Jason Delay singled him home to even the game at three. The Pirates had one more rally left in them in the eighth. Tres Gonzalez and Jackson Glenn started the rally with singles. Matt Frazier doulbed home a run and a Cole Sands wild pitch plated another run. Rodolfo Nolasco drew a walk and Jake Lamb singled home one more run. Pittsburgh took a three-run lead into the ninth. Chase Anderson threw two shutout innings and the Pirates picked up the win in Bradenton today.

-Final Thoughts- Louie Varland looked good with three shutout inninngs. He allowed two hits with a strikeout. Brock Stewart gave up a run on a hit with a walk and a strikeout in the fourth. Griffin Jax struck out one in a 1-2-3 fifth, Josh Staumont gave up a run with two walks and a strikeout in the sixth, and Steven Okert allowed a run with three strikeouts in the seventh. Cole Sands ran into some trouble in the eighth. He gave up three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Trevor Larnach led the way with two hits and two RBI's on the day. The Twins hit 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base. Tomorrow, the Yankees come to town as Nestor Cortes faces Bailey Ober at Hammond Stadium.

JOHNNY HODGES, ‘’THE RABBIT’’

Né le 25 juillet 1907 à Cambridgeport, près de Cambridge au Massachusetts, Cornelius ‘’Johnny’’ Hodges était le fils de John H. Hodges et de Katie Swan Hodges, qui étaient tous deux originaires de Virginie. Après avoir habité durant un certain temps à North Cambridge, la famille Hodges s’est installée sur la rue Hammond, dans le South End de Boston, où Hodges avait grandi aux côtés des saxophonistes Harry Carney (un autre futur membre de l’orchestre de Duke Ellington) et d’Howard E. Johnson.

Hodges avait appris la musique en commençant jouer de la batterie et du piano. Même si sa mère était une excellente pianiste, Hodges était surtout un autodidacte. Il était passé au saxophone soprano vers l’âge de quatorze ans.

JEUNESSE ET ÉDUCATION

Hodges a amorcé sa carrière en jouant du piano dans des danses organisées dans des résidences privées au tarif de 8$ la soirée. Durant son adolescence, Johnny avait commencé à jouer du saxophone soprano. C’est d’ailleurs à cette époque que Johnny avait acquis le surnom de ‘’rabbit’’, même si son origine est loin de faire l’unanimité. Certains croient que Johnny s’était mérité ce surnom en raison de sa rapidité comme coureur, mais d’autres comme Harry Carney sont plutôt d’avis que c’était en raison de sa passion pour les sandwiches laitue-tomates. Quant au saxophoniste Johnny Griffin, il croit que ce surnom lui avait été attribué en raison de son apparence lorsqu’il jouait. Griffin expliquait: "He looked like a rabbit, no expression on his face while he's playing all this beautiful music." Hodges était également surnommé ‘’Jeep.’’

À l’âge de quatorze ans, Hodges était allé avec sa soeur aînée voir son idole Sidney Bechet jouer dans la revue ‘’Black and White’’ qui était présentée dans un théâtre burlesque de Boston. C’est la soeur aînée de Johnny qui l’avait présenté à Bechet. Ce dernier ayant remarqué que Hodges avai toujours un saxophone soprano qu’il traînait partout avec lui, il lui avait demandé de lui jouer un morceau.

Hodges avait interprété la pièce ‘’My Honey’s Lovin’’ à la grande satisfaction de Bechet. En fait, Bechet avait été tellement impressionné par le talent d’Hodges qu’il l’avait encouragé à continuer de jouer. Il avait même proposé de lui donner des leçons. Sidney Bechet avait d’ailleurs été une des principales influences d’Hodges au cours de sa carrière.

Au début des années 1920, Hodges avait remplacé Bechet dans le groupe de Willie ‘’The Lion’’ Smith. En 1926, il s’était joint à l’orchestre de Chick Webb dont son beau-frère, Don Kirkpatrick, était le pianiste-arrangeur. Il avait aussi joué dans les groupes de Lloyd Scott, Bobby Sawyer et Luckey Roberts.

SA COLLABORATION AVEC ELLINGTON

Hodges s’est installé à New York en 1924. Il s’était joint à l’orchestre de Duke Ellington en novembre 1928. C’est le clarinettiste Barney Biggard qui avait recommandé Hodges à Ellington. À l’époque, Hodges jouait à la fois du saxophone alto et soprano. Hodges avait cessé de jouer du soprano avec l’orchestre au milieu des années 1940 pour se concentrer sur l’alto.

Hodges avait fait une tournée en Europe avec l’orchestre en 1933 et 1939.

Hodges avait également participé au célèbre concert de Benny Goodman à Carnegie Hall en 1938. À l’époque, Goodman avait décrit Hodges comme le meilleur saxophoniste alto qu’il n’avait jamais entendu. De son côté, Charlie Parker avait qualifié Hodges de ‘’Lily Pons [une célèbre chanteuse de l’époque] of his instrument.’’ Quant à John Coltrane, il considérait Hodges comme son modèle. Il l’avait d’ailleurs déjà décrit comme le meilleur saxophoniste au monde.

Comme chef d’orchestre, Duke Ellington avait l’habitude de composer des pièces pour un musicien en particulier, et Johnny Hodges n’avait pas fait exception. C’est ainsi que les pièces ‘’Confab with Rab’’, ‘’Jeep’s Blues’’, ‘’Sultry Sunset’’, ’’The Jeep is Jumpin’’’, ‘’Black Butterfly’’, ‘’Isfahan’’, ‘’Empty Ballroom Blues’’ et ‘’Hodge Podge’’ avaient été écrites spécialement à son intention.

D’autres pièces enregistrées par l’orchestre mettaient évidence le jeu d’Hodges comme ‘’Magenta Haze’’, ‘’Warm Valley’’, ‘’In a Sentimental Mood’’, ‘ ‘’Squatty Roo’’, ‘’Prelude to a Kiss’’, ‘’Haupe’’ (un extrait de la trame sonore du film ‘’Anatomy of a Murder’’), ‘’Flirtibird’’, ‘’The Star-Crossed Lovers’’ (tirée de la ‘’Sweet Thunder Suite’’), ‘’I Got it Bad (And That Ain’t Good)’’, ‘’Blood Count’’ et ‘’Passion Flower.’’ Simultanément à son travail dans l’orchestre, Hodges avait également enregistré avec des vedettes du jazz comme Billie Holiday, Lionel Hampton, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson et Wild Bill Davis, avec lequel il avait formé un des premiers duos orgue-saxophone. Hodges a aussi enregistré plusieurs albums pour le producteur Norman Granz. Parmi ceux-ci, on compte une jam session réalisée en 1952 avec Benny Carter, Charlie Parker et l’organiste ‘’Wild’’ Bill Davis.

À la surprise générale, Hodges avait quitté Ellington en 1951 pour former son propre groupe, emmenant avec lui d’autres membres de l’orchestre comme Lawrence Brown et Sonny Greer avec qui il avait enregistré les albums ‘’Castle Rock’’ et ‘’Memories of Ellington.’’

Mais le groupe d’Hodges avait connu peu de succès commercial et avait été démantelé en 1955. Hodges était donc retourné jouer avec l’orchestre d’Ellington avec qui il était demeuré jusqu’à sa mort, même s’il avait continué de développer ses propres projets personnels et de diriger des sessions d’enregistrement sous son propre nom durant la même période.

Hodges a aussi collaboré avec Ellington dans le cadre de plus petites formations avec lesquelles il avait enregistré les albums ‘’Duke Ellington And Johnny Hodges Play The Blues - Back To Back’’ et ‘’Duke Ellington And Johnny Hodges Side By Side.’’ En 1960 et 1967, Hodges avait également accompagné Ellington lors de l’enregistrement de deux albums avec Frank Sinatra.

DERNIÈRES ANNÉES ET DÉCÈS

Johnny Hodges a présenté ses derniers concerts à l’Imperial Room de Toronto, moins d’une semaine avant de décéder à New York le 11 mai 1970 des suites d’un infarctus survenu lors d’une visite chez le dentiste. Hodges avait effectué ses derniers enregistrements dans le cadre de la ‘’New Orleans Suite’’, qui était seulement à moitié terminée au moment de son décès.

Johnny Hodges s’est marié à deux reprises. Il a d’abord épousé Bertha Pettiford, de qui il avait eu une fille, puis Edith Cue, qui lui avait donné un fils, John C. Hodges II, et une fille, Lorna Lee.

À la suite de la mort d’Hodges, Duke Ellington avait déclaré: ‘’The band will never sound the same without Johnny.’’ Dans son éloge funèbre, Ellington avait ajouté: ‘’Never the world's most highly animated showman or greatest stage personality, but a tone so beautiful it sometimes brought tears to the eyes—this was Johnny Hodges. This is Johnny Hodges."

Johnny Hodges a influencé plusieurs musiciens au cours de sa carrière. La plupart des saxophonistes alto ont reconnu à un moment où un autre l’influence qu’Hodges avait eu sur leur développement, de Phil Woods à Charles McPherson, en passant par Ted Nash, Gary Foster et George Young. Même le grand Ben Webster avait admis qu’il adorait tellement le jeu d’Hodges qu’il avait tenté de jouer du ténor comme s’il jouait de l’alto !

Même des saxophonistes qui ne l’avaient jamais vu jouer avaient tenté d’imiter son style. Comme l’affirmait Ellington, “Johnny Hodges has complete independence of expression. He says what he wants to say on the horn,…in his language, from his perspective.”

Reconnu comme un maître du blues et des balades, Hodges avait toujours eu une sonorité très pure. Partisan de la simplicité, son sens de l’harmonie, sa maîtrise du vibrato, sa technique impeccable et son absence de fioritures dans ses solos lui ont valu l’admiration de musiciens de toutes les époques et de tous les styles, de Ben Webster à John Coltrane (qui avaient joué avec Hodges lorsqu’il avait lancé son propre orchestre en 1951) en passant par l’accordéonniste Lawrence Welk, qui lui avait réservé une place sur un de ses albums de standards. Le style très sensuel et très personnel d’Hodges (on disait de lui qu’il jouait de l’alto comme un saxophoniste ténor) avait souvent été imité par la suite.

Johnny Hodges est aujourd’hui considéré un des saxophonistes alto les plus influents de l’histoire du jazz avec Charlie Parker.
