Greil Mercenaries superhero AU

thanks for the ask! this one really got away from me so it ended up taking a while but i hope you enjoy what came of it :D

also shoutout to @tobegii for helping me brainstorm these as the tellius expert <3. and to @local-eldritch for running interference the entire time and trying to make things worse

Ok, for starters: setting. This fic would be set in one of those superhero settings where people with powers are treated as freaks. There's no superhero industry and no PR for heroes. Heroes and villains alike are wanted by the government (though, yknow, some of the enforcers tend to be a bit nicer to the people who actually save their city on the regular than the ones trying to burn it down).

At the start of the fic, the Greil Vigilantes are a well-known team of masked heroes, comprised of Greil, Titania, Oscar, Shinon, and Gatrie. Rhys is their medic but his existence isn't really known to the public. Also unknown to the public is the fact that this group of fighters is raising a gaggle of children at their secret base, which doubles as a sort of unofficial foster home for kids with powers. This wasn't the original intent; Greil's reputation as one of the first vigilante heroes just resulted in a lot of misfits and outcasts flocking his way.

now we get to the long part because somebody (me) decided it was important to come up with powers for every single character:

Greil - flight and super strength and a cool sword (ragnell or something idk).

Titania - gravity manipulation. not a lot of thought here other than she's cool and gets a cool power

Shinon - no powers, just a guy with a gun and freakishly good aim. joined the group bc a) gatrie asked him to and b) he was already on the run from the govt so may as well shelter with these guys

Gatrie - can make barriers/shields. he and shinon work well as a team; shinon does the attacking while gatrie protects his powerless ass from any superpowered attacks flying around

Oscar - shapeshifting (into animals. people are difficult). oscar joined the group because he was seeking shelter for his brothers after they got found out for having powers. fighting alongside them is sort of his way of repaying them for that aid.

Rhys - emotion sensing/manipulation. (i've been told this is similar to a character called "mantis" but i wouldn't know). rhys mostly sees his power as a hindrance since it doesn't turn off and often makes him feel sick when people around him are distressed. it's the reason he had to drop out of med school and ended up joining as the team's medic.

and then the kids (they're around their PoR canon ages in this, maybe a year or two older, but i'm going to call them collectively "the kids" throughout)

Boyd - regeneration (superpower) and is also just weirdly strong (in the normal person way). i wanted to run with the idea that families have similar types of powers so the brothers all have powers loosely based on changing their body somehow

Rolf - can make doubles of himself. mainly because i thought it was funny. he still fights with a bow and arrow because they didn't want to give him a gun

Mist - teleportation (movement based power inherited from greil's flight) and immunity to mind control/alteration (based on her immunity to the medallion in game)

Ike - what i call "shitty flying" (can hover but can't maneuver himself around in the air) also inherited from greil's flying power. nothing else.

Soren - wind powers with a side of thunder and lightning (which only tend to come out when he's in distress). obvious reasons. soren was also the only one who wasnt part of the group due to relation to one of the original members (ike found him in the woods or smth and brought him back to the base) (mia doesnt count because she joins during the fic)

Mia - telekinesis. no thoughts about this one. she joins the group midway through the fic, to be game accurate

So we get some background with all these characters, get introduced to what they're up to. The kids still go to school and have normal lives in varying amounts, having to be careful not to show their powers, and they're generally not invited to the big superhero fights. I figure Greil would still want his kids to take over the family business one day, but (especially in a more modern setting) he'd want them to enjoy their childhood and stay out of danger for the time being.

And then Greil dies. Or disappears, at least. He's fighting The Black Knight, an infamous supervillain, and he loses, with no one close enough to save him. Ike sees it happen on TV, and he can't even say anything for fear of revealing his and his father's identity. They never find the body, either.

Greil's presumed death rocks the entire city and shakes the foundation of the Greil Vigilantes. Shinon and Gatrie leave; Titania and Oscar don't want to fight anymore except to defend their base from anyone who might threaten their family. It's Ike, of course, who wants to keep his father's dream alive.

Fearing that Greil's death will invite a new era of chaos upon the city, Ike comes up with a plan - to take up his father's mantle and convince the city that "Greil" never died in the first place. It's a tough job; where Greil had super strength and flight, Ike has to rely on his own (normal) strength and Soren's wind powers to keep up the charade. After some convincing, his friends step up to help him as well, forming a new group of rookie heroes ready to take on the world. But with the Black Knight still trying to hunt down "Greil" and finish what he started, they might all be getting more than they bargained for...

Some main plot points & arcs for the story:

Tensions within the group run high as everyone disagrees on the best way to protect the people they care about. Titania and Oscar don't want any of the kids fighting any battles; Mist and Ike get into arguments about Ike's recklessness. Boyd keeps throwing himself into danger to protect others and getting yelled at for it. I don't think anyone wants to let Rolf near the battle but he refuses to be left behind.

Later in the fic, Titania and Oscar get some cool moments when a battle comes too close to home and threatens the secret base (or if someone almost kills one of the kids). They may be retired heroes, but they're still forces to be reckoned with in their own right.

Shinon and Gatrie would also definitely make reappearances, now off doing their own thing as a proper morally-grey-superhero-duo of their own. I don't think they'd ever properly rejoin the group, but they might team up for the final battle or something.

Identity shenanigans throughout, for everyone. All the kids are trying to keep their identities a secret while living some kind of normal life. Mia finds out Ike's secret (or part of it anyway, maybe not all the stuff about his dead dad) and they're like oh god what do we do but then she turns out to be a super also and ends up joining the group. Several of them know Zelgius personally (maybe he's a teacher at their school or something?)

Ike trying so hard to fill his father's shoes and eventually having to come to terms with the fact that he can't do that. He just can't. But, at the same time, he's learning that maybe he doesn't need to in order to help the people he cares about (and the city at large). Eventually, of course, we get that chekhovs gun scene where the power Ike keeps calling useless (hovering) manages to save him in a moment of danger and he gains a new appreciation for his abilities etc etc. But also a lot of it is about teamwork and Ike's abilities as a team leader for his friends.

Soren has trouble controlling his powers when he gets upset. This would be a running thing, used to accent emotional moments and also giving Soren his arc to deal with as he tries to help Ike. Could also be used for a really cool scene where Ike gets hurt and suddenly it's thunder and lightning for miles around.

Mist and Rolf being utter menaces with their respective powers. This would be a running thing. They cause so many problems. Sometimes they work together to do so.

My favorite Emblem Soren interaction is when you send someone equipped with Emblem Ike after him. Soren is all "Oh no, no ABORT I am not prepared for this level of getting my ass beat!" while Ike is just clearly going to enjoy beating some sense into Soren.

it's so funny like 'you don't have to do this!!!' he knows Ike's strength and doesn't wanna try it.

imagine if most of the greil mercs have a collective habit of roughhousing randomly (boyd's curse) and soren had to adjust to that

waking up one morning, start making his coffee then turn to see ike charging at him!!!

The OG Greil Mercenaries from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance contain; Team Dad Greil and his two biological kids Ike and Mist, Team Mom Titania (who has been called Mom by at least one mercenary), a cranky wind mage named Soren who is literally only with the group because Ike gave him a sandwich once, a priest Rhys who Titania found sick and dying by the side of the road and proceeded to adopt, Mia who for reasons known only to herself decided to make Rhys her eternal rival, an asshole archer Shinon who only likes two people (Rolf and Gatrie) and would sell your soul to the devil for one corn chip, Gatrie who thinks he's smoother than he actually is, and a trio of brothers Oscar, Boyd, and Rolf who are trying to make their way in the world after the death of their father.

Can you get any more found family than this motley crew of Ride or Die?

After reading the first chapter of "like cobwebs in high vaulted ceilings" I became curious to how the others in the army thought of the corrupted church in Begnion, I imagine the ones from Begnion are used to it but I'm not sure about the others, we don't really get to know how many are religious. What do you think?

Gonna do the Greil Mercenaries and Elincia. And inserting a cut for the sake of everyone's dash.

Ike, as we know, was mad about the way the apostle greeted Elincia, and while I don't particularly imagine he was ever strictly religious, he probably learned a little bit from his mother/Rhys and would be disgusted at seeing how bad they were, but I think he grew up with Shinion "I hate the nobility" and Soren "the cynic" too long to be like, totally shocked? Mad, certainly. Just more and more angry at every little thing.

I imagine Mist, given that if Rhys dies prior to chapter 9, she says she learned to use the healing staff from a local church, might also have been a bit bright-eyed and disappointed at the church being corrupt, but again, given who she grew up with, probably upset that they were right.

Titania tends to be optimistically patriotic, and Begnion is the suzerain of Crimea, so I believe she may have been hopeful. But, since Crimea declared it's half independence over rejecting slavery, she may not have had very high expectations. Her expectations were on the floor, but she still wound up disappointed.

Soren was having a grand old time in Begnion for other reasons, likely uncomfortable being in the big church of the church capital of the church country, but is a bit too cynical to be surprised at any of it. His expectations were solidly in hell, and the senators still found a way to limbo beneath the bar.

Shinon likely would have been torn between his two great hates: nobility and laguz, but I think the nobility would have won out because he seems to hate entitlement and arrogance and unearned power (he is shown to learn to respect laguz because of their age and the laguz royals because they have earned their positions), but the corruption of the Begnion church is likely of no surprise to him. Same shit different Tuesday. (oh wow, the most wealthy and powerful nobles on the continent are the scummiest scumbags to ever scum, I'm almost too shocked for words)

Gatrie...I have a hard time getting a read on him sometimes. He's a good guy who values being polite and chivalrous, and I think he would have been disappointed on that front, but I don't know that he had many expectations going into it beyond thinking about seeing the Holy Guard. And they were everything he wanted, and Sigrun and Tanith are good people, so no disappointments to be had.

Oscar and Boyd don't strike me as the type who have put a lot of thought into what Begnion would be. They've been too focused on surviving, so while Oscar was training to be a royal knight, I think they both probably had no expectations going in other than it's the big fancy rich country and that's going to be neat, probably. Oscar was likely quietly frustrated and disappointed, talking only in the privacy of their own quarters, while Boyd was more obviously outraged, similar to Ike. Boyd also frustrated at the days of doing nothing, stifled at the atmosphere.

Rolf likely was like Mist, spending the last year spending a lot of his time with Rhys and may have been a bit excited to see the big fancy rich country, and a little hurt to realize that there was some merit to the comments Shinon made after all.

Elincia may have been hopeful, but I think because of her position and learning from Bastian and Lucia, she may have not been too surprised. Disheartened certainly.

The Greil Mercs: Wild West AU

HELLO it has been like a month but i'm escaping confinement and back with my ideas

ok so. if I was going to write this fic. it's going to be a cowboy murder mystery a la TAZ: Dust (but without the fantasy elements). it all takes place in a small town where most of our main cast lives. it starts with the murder of Greil and, on the very same night, a bank robbery.

the fic follows a new character's POV every chapter, focusing on how the crime affects the community and giving the reader new clues to piece together the mystery. the first chapter is ike's (and maybe there's a little prologue before that from greil's pov). the last chapter is probably pov of either sephiran or zelgius.

some notes on characters & plot:

greil is retired. in the past, he was involved in an Incident that went down in a small mining town nearby (something crazy discovered in the mines) (this incident eventually proves to be the motivating factor of most of the plot)

titania runs the local saloon and is always ready to throw down. her saloon is a meeting place for most of team good guys throughout the story

ike takes greil's gun off his dead body. he's never used a gun before. it's kind of a chekhov's gun, but whether its relevance will be as evidence or as a weapon remains to be seen...

oscar, boyd, and rolf are outlaws who have set up in a cave on the outskirts of town and steal to get by ever since their father died. they steal cattle n shit, and they've gotten very good at doing this as a team. they're major suspects for one or both of the crimes but are eventually cleared

rolf has a gun. he's actually the best shot of the three brothers

boyd actually isn't allowed to hold a loaded gun ever since the incident but oscar lets him keep an empty one in case he needs to threaten someone while they're outlaw-ing

shinon is a traveling bounty hunter who comes through town for like one chapter. he lets the brothers get away, though he won't admit to it. he's honestly not important to the story i just think he would do this

now about our criminals...

the black knight is a masked outlaw - no one knows his true identity. it's suggested pretty early on that he was the one who robbed the bank, which gives him an alibi for the murder.

sephiran is the town sheriff. he was called to the bank when it was robbed and chased the black knight away, or so he says. this gives him an alibi for the murder

(we maybe get an ace attorney-esque moment where ike triumphantly reveals zelgius' secret identity, only to realize he's just "proved" zelgius innocent of killing his father)

the big final reveal is that sephiran and zelgius basically staged this bank robbery and planted fake evidence so sephiran could "catch" zelgius as the black knight, secure the town's trust, and clear them both of the murder. in reality, sephiran was the only one at the bank, while zelgius killed greil (to keep him from revealing the secrets from that mining town, probably).
