Greg Isenberg, a tech exec from Miami, recently took to X and explained how he believes the AI Girlfriend industry will rise up to take a slice of profit from Match Group.

For those unfamiliar, Match Group is the company that owns Tinder, Hinge, Match.com, OKCupid, Plenty of Fish, and several others. They currently sit at a market valuation of over $9 Billion USD.

According to Greg, the market is primed and ready for the AI-equivalent of Match Group to rise up and make $1B+. If the concept of AI girlfriends and people who spend on them sounds ridiculous to you, Greg based his assertion off a real-life experience.

His theory comes from a recent conversation with a 24-year-old in Miami. The 24-year-old admitted he spends around $10,000 per month on AI girlfriends.

Greg was initially speechless but then he listed the various reasons provided

"Some people play video games, I play with AI girlfriends"

"I love that I could use voice notes now with my AI girlfriends"

"I get to customize my AI girlfriend. Likes, dislikes etc. It's comfort at the end of the day".

There are currently several AI dating startups. According to Greg, the 24-year-old said "There are a few platforms he likes but he prefers candy dot ai and kupid dot ai"

"In case you were wondering, AI boyfriends exist too. And this category will probably thrive too" he added as he finished his thread of posts.

Well, not really, but also kinda.

Like, they're certainly part of the same premise niche (genre kitchen sinks featuring super-hero-adjacent anthro families) of which the original TMNT cartoon is the most visible and successful example. That the original TMNT exists and was extremely successful almost certainly made Gargoyles' existence more likely. And Greg Weisman has explicitly stated that the theme naming for the Gargoyles was inspired by the turtles' naming convention.

That said "was inspired by" is not the same thing as "ripped off": you could never confuse the two shows, and even if you were to argue that TMNT and Gargoyles are comparable in quality, you could not, realistically, expect everyone who liked one to like the other. Ultimately, the original TMNT cartoon makes up only about 45% of Gargoyles' DNA. Just as important is Batman: The Animated Series, whose tone and storytelling set the stage for Gargoyles (comparative) sophistication, and helped it stand out within the genre.

Now, where it gets really interesting is when you get to 2003, and the second TMNT series, which, with its darker (compared to the original) tone and serialized storytelling, ends up having a lot of Gargoyles in its DNA*--enough that I ended up having an entire blog dedicated to that fact. And while part of this is coincidental--a lot of its approach is informed by attempting to be faithful to the original comic books--the similarities in concepts can't be avoided when they're both telling similar stories in similar ways.
