Aluminum Recycling
Last week I posted about one waste product involved with the production of aluminum (Red mud) - this week the discussion is on aluminum waste itself. Aluminum is one of the most recycled materials in the world, and has been called 'infinitely recyclable' by some. This refers to the fact that while many recycled goods such as glass or plastics are used to produce "down-cycled" products, aluminum can be recycled into the same product. Estimates say that 70-80% of all the aluminum that has ever been produced is still in use today.
Economically, recycling aluminum is extremely viable; only about 5% of the amount of energy used to produce new aluminum is used in the recycling process. However, while the rates of aluminum recycling among the industries that use it remain strong, consumable recycling, notably aluminum cans, has been decreasing as of late in some countries, including the US. (Other countries, such as Brazil and Germany, have extremely high aluminum can recycling rates, upwards of 98% in recent years.)

Green Machines: Eco-Friendly Options in the World of Smaller-Scale Power Generation.
Tumblr media
Small portable generators can be lifesavers in situations where power is needed but unavailable. Whether you are camping, on a job site or experiencing a power outage, these generators provide electricity to charge your devices and keep the lights on. However, the convenience of these machines often comes at the expense of the environment and your wallet. Fortunately, there are options available that are both eco-friendly and cost-effective. In this article, we will discuss the advantages of choosing eco-friendly options in the world of small portable generators.
The Problem with Traditional Generators
Traditional generators operate on fossil fuels like gasoline and diesel. These fuels release harmful emissions into the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. These emissions contribute to air pollution and negatively impact the environment. Additionally, the maintenance and fuel costs of traditional generators can be high, making them unsustainable in the long run.
Advantages of Eco-Friendly Options
Choosing eco-friendly options for small portable generators can have several advantages. Firstly, eco-friendly options are powered by clean energy sources, which means they do not release harmful emissions. This makes them better for the environment and for your health. Secondly, eco-friendly options can be more cost-effective in the long run. They may have higher upfront costs, but they require less maintenance and fuel, which can save you money over time.
Types of Eco-Friendly Generators
Solar Generators
Solar generators are powered by the sun's energy, making them highly sustainable and cost-effective. These generators do not require fuel, which means they do not release harmful emissions. Additionally, solar generators are quiet and require minimal maintenance. They are ideal for powering small devices like phones and laptops, as well as small appliances.
Wind Generators
Wind generators harness the power of the wind to generate electricity. Like solar generators, wind generators do not require fuel, which means they do not release harmful emissions. However, wind generators require more space than solar generators and may not be practical for smaller areas. They are best suited for larger areas where wind speeds are consistent.
Battery-Powered Generators
Battery-powered generators store energy in batteries, which can then be used to power devices and appliances. These generators do not require fuel, making them eco-friendly and cost-effective. Additionally, battery-powered generators can be charged using renewable energy sources like solar power. They are ideal for powering small devices and appliances, but may not be practical for larger appliances or longer periods of use.
Conclusion
Small portable generators can be incredibly useful, but they often come at the expense of the environment and your wallet. By choosing eco-friendly options like solar, wind, or battery-powered generators, you can reduce your carbon footprint and save money in the long run. These options are sustainable, cost-effective, and practical for a variety of situations. Consider making the switch to an eco-friendly generator and take a step closer to a greener future.

Sunday, January 12th, 2020 (COMPONENT #5)
As I revisit the essential questions that helped shape the twelve standards of focus for developing my curriculum map around “describing basic landforms, identifying layers of Earth, and recognizing that the surface of the earth changes due to slow processes and rapid processes,” I took into much consideration the diverse population of students I work with. From students whom have an Individualized Education Plans, to English as a Second Language students, to gifted students, the materials I chose for my resource bank reach across the spectrum of learners to ensure every student is receiving an appropriate education; from auditory learning, visual learning, and kinesthetic learning, all students will benefit from research-based practices, YouTube videos, and various books. Through doing so, the three resources per standard allow all students in the classroom to reach their potential through variations in mediums, representations, and ways of thinking.
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
·       Why is Lake Erie’s shoreline changing shape?
·       What causes Lake Erie’s shoreline to change size?
·       How does the changing shoreline affect people living in Lakecliff?
·       How is the land changing along Lake Erie’s shoreline?
·       What are strategies we can use to reduce erosion?
·       What materials would work best to hold the shoreline in place?

Inequality of Consumption and the Growing Consumer Class
3/3/19
Being born in the United States and into a well-off family, it’s easy to fail to realize that many are not as lucky as me. Not only that, but that my actions are doing harm to the unlucky ones. The richest 1% of the world is predicted to hold 64% of all wealth by 2030, if trends continue (Savage 2018). This type of wealth inequality also means there is consumption inequality, and therefore unfair environmental degradation. The top wealthiest 10% is responsible for consuming 59% of the world’s resources, as of 2005 (Greentumble 2016). As of now, we have enough natural resources to provide for everyone on the planet. The problem comes in when we talk about the extent to which these natural resources are consumed. It is obvious that developed countries have a bad habit of over consuming, and if everyone follows suit, the planet is doomed. Considering that the consumer class is currently growing, doomsday may be approaching. Almost half of global consumers are located in developing countries, meaning further expansion of consumption is on its way (Mayell 2004). Globalization is a major reason for this, where what were viewed as luxuries are now considered necessities. This is not necessarily a bad thing; we do need to increase standards of living for all people, but having consumer-crazy countries lead as an example is not the best thing we can do. In order to increase standards of living and distribute resources evenly while also saving our planet means that we need to change the way we consume and utilize these resources.

Biodiversity - Main Brief
What is it?
“It is the variety of life on Earth, in all its forms and all its interactions.”(Damian Carrington, 12. March,2018) Biodiversity is extremely important for our planet and is considered to be an vital element which we need otherwise their is no future for humanity on this planet.
“Biodiversity is the pillar that allows ecosystems to function and humans to thrive. Without biodiversity in an ecosystem we would not have the many plants and animals we find in our world today, including us.” (Greentumble, 02. July. 2018)
Several elements that make up biodiversity “starting with genes, then individual species, then communities of creatures and finally entire ecosystems, such as forests or coral reefs, where life interplays with the physical environment. These myriad interactions have made Earth habitable for billions of years.”(Damian Carrington, 12. March,2018)
Does wildlife matter?
Wildlife plays an important role in Biodiversity as “the air you breathe, the water you drink and the food you eat all ultimately rely on biodiversity.”  For example we need plants for oxygen and if their were no more “bees to pollinate there would be no fruit or nuts.”(Damian Carrington, 12. March,2018)
We are destroying biodiversity sure to the rise in human population. More housing and industrial sites are being built leaving less room for wildlife areas. “Our expanding farms and cities are leaving less room for wildlife.”(Michael Le Page,06. May. 2019) Pollution is also destroying biodiversity with animals being harmed such as dolphins due to pollution. Rivers and lakes are also being affected due to the pollution.
Biodiversity could have a bigger “threat to humanity than climate change.” (Damian Carrington, 12. March,2018) Biodiversity is experiencing changes due to human activities.  Humanity is responsible for destroying nature and we are “threatening the survival of a million species and our own future.” (Michael Le Page,06. May. 2019) Due to human activities there is less room for wildlife and species are suffering from extinction. For example “Around 700 vertebrates have gone extinct in the past few centuries. Forty per cent of amphibians and a third of coral species, sharks and marine mammals look set to follow.” (Michael Le Page,06. May. 2019)
What can be done to save biodiversity?
Giving space back to wildlife and the protection it needs to survive. However, due to human population rising decreases the space for wildlife. “Most wildlife is destroyed by land being cleared for cattle, soy, palm oil, timber and leather. Most of us consume these products every day, with palm oil being found in many foods and toiletries.”(Damian Carrington, 12. March,2018) We can help by also “increasing our knowledge of environmental issues, increasing our awareness of the impacts of biodiversity loss, and increasing support for government policies and actions that conserve our valuable ecosystems.” (Nature Trust British Columbia)
