as much as i think it's important for pern fandom to call out some of the nastiness embedded in the whole dragon flies, rider complies thing -- the comphet, the noncon -- and/or downplay it for our comfort

maybe it's also good to lean into it.

i think it would be fantastic to read absolutely fucked up stories about bronzers abusing their chosen fuckboy greenrider. throw in some force-femme. i forget the term for it but maybe that poor greenrider loses his virginity by rape. (could also work for a female greenrider or some other combo of genders -- throw in some forced preganancy too. or again i forget the term -- but when the abusive female partner carries the other partner's child as a form of control) i wanna see a greenrider walking wounded, fucked over by the system, metaphorically on a leash with no way out

and !!

i personally don't get it when people are bothered by parent/child or clutchmate/clutchmate flight pairings. like, it's all incest bud. they all have the same grandparents if not the same parents, that's how the numbers work. just ignore it... but it would be so interesting to see someone run with it

a gold deliberately picking her son to win her flights. a sire making it a point to fly all of his daughters. that's kind of sexy. a dragon who's aware they're transgressing human norms and doing it anyway?

or maybe the dragons don't care, but it forces the humans into incest? you could get some sweet sibling action super easy, and dragonriding runs in families so...

don't get me started on what a gold could do with command.

It all started with a knock on the inner door of her weyr, slow and solid. She would’ve recognized that knock in her sleep at that point.

“What do you need, D’imis?” Her fellow greenrider didn’t bother even opening the door, just calling back from the hall.

“I thought you should know, someone seems to have upset our laundry team.” A chill went down L’puyi’s spine. The higher-ups insisted on only letting Holder girls stand for gold clutches, ‘just in case’, but she’d long held the belief that many of their own staff- women and men both- would be just as fitting. Certainly, she’d met even drudges with the strength of will and personality to not be overwhelmed by a ranker.

It was grand when you needed to talk to somebody about a problem, or find a partner for some festive game, or even just a drinking buddy. Especially so when you were watching say, a bronzer get a shoddy ration of stew for daring to talk junk about the cooks’ efforts.

Less so when your laundry was on the line.

“Okay, what’s going on,” she asked, shoving herself out of her chair and towards the door.

“Apparently everything got left in big bags in the bronzers’ weyrs with signs saying we could all sort our own laundry.”

“Really?” Her face was twisted in surprise, confusion, concern, as she opened the door. D’imis just shrugged, a frown across his face.

“I used softer language.” Ooohhh, so it was Cica behind this. If that girl ever became Headwoman either they would never have problems with supplies again or the Holders would burn the Weyr down. If she ever got on a ranker Lessa and F’lar were in for competition. L’puyi heaved a sigh and squared her shoulders.

“Alright. Okay. I’ll just, go check the damage then…”

So began the most aggravating month of her life.

i can't find my blogthoughts :( maybe i didn't blog them. maybe they were just thoughts. i've cobbled together here some notes from personal correspondence on the topic:

i think dragons and whers need a certain type of mind to be sane, to keep from instinctively going between in some kind of existential pain that's unimaginable and i think they are [in canon] beasts, animals, who can't reason and look for what they need... especially when they're newborn. so they just look for something close. and they grab onto the mind they find and they dig their little claws in and change it all in one go. that's what the joy of impression is for. it's flooding you with dopamine and serotonin to help ease your brain into accepting its new existence which has sheared half of it off an replaced with with a dragon. that's why you can make broad generalizations about, say, greenriders. greenriders at like that because half their brain is green dragon, they literally cannot be different. that's why bronzers all act like they have 12 inch dicks. that's why goldriders are always about madonna/whore and maiden/matron.

and additional thought that i remember thinking but can't find where/if i wrote it: this is horrifying for the bystanders moreso than the riders. having a friend or family member, someone you know intimately, turn into something else... something that's not them, something that you can see copied over everyone who shares their color impression... they use the same words to describe their bonded. their laugh changes; the way they hug changes. it reminds you of others of their rank. they're distracted -- unable to relate to you anymore. half of them has been paved over and replaced and they don't even seem to know it -- they describe the event as joyful, overwhelming, a blessing.

i think this is a great thing to think about because it's really truly fully 100% canon-compliant. it works because it's a watsonian analogue to the "true" doylist explanation of why certain colorriders act the way they do -- ex. bronzeriders fill a certain narrative role including tropes of headship, masculine ideation, etc., and, even in the cases where they aren't 'model' bronzers, they have to respond to that narrative role.

machismo comes for free with the bronze. you might also forget how to smile that way that your mama taught you, but you'll never know you did.
