Song Review: Green Leaf Rustlers - “Big Mouth Blues” (Live)
It’s fair to say Green Leaf Rustlers are a cover band. But it’s imperative to skip the just that often makes the term pejorative.
For the Rustlers not only cover a wide swath of music, they do it well and make the songs sound like their own without losing the originators’ personalities. On “Big Mouth Blues,” Gram Parsons’ sensibility is obvious in Barry Sless’ pedal steel and Greg Loiacono’s twangy six string, but, in large part due to Chris Robinson’s vocals and musical philosophy, the jam ethos permeates.
The cut follows Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley covers as the third single ahead of the Rustlers’ forthcoming From Within Marin, which arrives March 14 and finds the band - featuring the monster Pete Sears/John Molo rhythm section - transitioning from stage to stereo systems.
It’s not the work of just a cover band. The Green Leaf Rustlers are a band that just plays covers.
There’s an important difference.

Song Review: Green Leaf Rustlers - “That’s Alright Mama” (Live)
With a Bo Diddley beat, a Johnny Cash melody and a looseness that strings them together, Green Leaf Rustlers take the Elvis out of “That’s Alright Mama.”
This quickie track - three minutes - comes ahead of the March 14, 2020, release of the Rustlers’ debut LP, the live From Within Marin. Besides singer Chris Robinson, Barry Sless does the heavy lifting on this one, sending pedal steel through the music like a cold chill through your body.
Rounded out by Greg Loiacono, Pete Sears and John Molo, the Rustlers can be described as a super-cover group and their debut includes tracks such as Gram Parsons’ “Big Mouth Blues.” the Rolling Stones’ “No Expectations,” Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street,” the Allman Brothers’ “Ramblin’ Man” and others.

Song Review: Green Leaf Rustlers - “No Expectations”
Pedal steeler Barry Sless and guitarist Greg Loiacono weave a county-rock tapestry and Chris Robinson is at his absolute best as a singer on Green Leaf Rustlers’ version of “No Expectations.”
More subdued than the lead single, “That’s Alright Mama,” that announced the March 14 arrival of the Rustlers’ live LP From Within Marin, this Rolling Stones cover takes its time, slowly unfurling on Loiacono and Sless’ guitars as Robinson delivers the song just perfectly. He’s not too aggressive and not too timid; he, along with the rest of the group, found his sweet spot on this one.
