Destinytober - Ghost
Read on Ao3 with formatting that isn't broken by the mobile tumblr app :)))
Nkechi-32 takes a deep breath, and exhales Light.
The Lost City is brilliant in the sunlight, overgrown buildings letting the brightness in through wide open windows and cracks in the ceilings. The floor is all grass, lush and green, and when she walks it feels like stepping on soft carpet—a little springy, a little uneaven, enticing her to take off the heavy boots and wade through it barefoot. Perhaps she could indulge in a little picnic, when the job's done.
Because of course there's a job. Much like Micah, to have sent her out Ghost-hunting when she'd barely arrived. Nkechi refocuses her optics as Agu flicks through the sensors on her HUD, trying to lock in on their target, but there is so much Light here it's near impossible to track down a single errant signature.
"I think I got something," he informs, and Nkechi sees it too—a speck of yellow on the heat map, some fifteen metres away from them and approaching. She turns the corner just as Agu says, "Wait, the signature doesn't ma—"
"Hi there!"
"Whoa!" Nkechi takes an abrupt step back, barely avoiding bumping head first into something small and violet. She didn't account for how fast the Ghost was moving.
"Oh, sorry!" It draws back as well, and she can see its shell now: Reef-made, delicate metal cut into shapes like flower petals and glazed over. It is strikingly familiar.
"Pulled Pork?" She laughs in disbelief. "Whatcha doin' here?"
"Nkechi!" he chirps, and cartwheels in the air. "We're patrolling! Oh, and by the way, my name's Glint now!"
"I take it this means you've found your Guardian," she says with a smile.
Agu emerges from his hiding spot and gives the other Ghost a good-natured nudge. "Did you find them on some asteroid?"
"Nope!" Glint cartwheels again, then stops and narrows his optic in thought. "Actually, the Dreaming City is technically built on an asteroid, so I guess it counts...? I don't know. Especially now with the curse and everything."
He is still talking when a shadow drops down from the rafters behind him, landing on two legs and then unfurling into a cloaked figure. With her instincts honed over centuries, Nkechi doesn't even flinch.
"You weren't joking about people calling you shredded meat, huh." The Hunter pushes their hood back and extends a hand to her. "You're Glint's friends, I take it?"
"These are Nkechi and Agu!" Glint says before any of them can reply. His voice gains an almost ceremonial tone when he adds, "And this is Crow, my Guardian."
Nkechi doesn't meet her Ghost's eye, but she can feel the look he is giving her. She shakes Crow's hand instead, and lets Glint ramble on.
They actually saw the missing Ghost, he tells her, a few hours ago by the eastern edge of the city. Crow offers to help track it down. He is quite nice, Nkechi thinks; his countenance seems to be in a state of constant battle between the natural Hunter confidence and the sheepishness of young Guardians in conversation with someone much older. They make quick work together, and she has to admit, he's not half bad a scout, even if Glint almost ruins their cover by chattering like a wound-up toy right in front of a flock of Husks.
Later, after escorting the wayward Ghost to Micah, Agu and her sit together on one of the Tower balconies and watch half the sunset, half the buzzing courtyard below.
"You know," he says, "that's not really what I pictured when I said he might find the greatest Guardian of all time."
"What, a prince of the Reef?"
"A Hunter Vanguard."
Nkechi laughs. "With how well filling that position had been going for the past few years, the odds really weren't in his favour."
"You think they're a good match?"
She looks down at the black-and-white Hunter leaning against the kiosk and chatting with a Legionnary. Glint is a tiny splotch of purple in the folds of his cloak, nestled against his cheek.
"Yeah," she says with a smile, and pulls her own Ghost closer. "Almost as good as we are."

//I wrote something quick yesterday. Muse is a bit down these days for rping (just because I'm extremely tired, lazy and LoL is trapping me) but I managed to write this little thing about Trondo. I hope you enjoy it! Picture is made by me with Xnalara :). It seems Trondo had a nice night of passion and the feelings coming after it. Slightly NSFW, some descriptions of implied sex.
🔪
Moonlight bathed the Artisans tranquil night in an ethereal glow. The pale luminescence danced across the carved stone structures, setting the jeweled walls blaze with a mesmerizing light. Amidst the whispering shadows, nocturnal owls hooted softly, their wise eyes ever watchful for unexpected prey. A gentle breeze rustled through the grass, its soothing melody playing along with the distant ocean's rhythmic pulse against the rugged cliffs. The occasional melancholy ballad of insomniac sheep wove through the serene tapestry of the night, a haunting serenade to the world beyond.
Trondo stood at his window, the wind caressing his long, loose hair as he gazed out at the breathtaking panorama. The rolling green hills, perched with towers and castles, stretched towards the mountains that embraced the coast. The classic architecture, elegant yet unpretentious, spoke to the Artisans' affinity for both beauty and practicality. As a Peace Keeper, Trondo had long foregone the luxuries many of his kind coveted. A humble lair carved into the same ground, a place of safety, was all he required. Yet, here he found himself within the grand Artisans castle surrounded by silks of vibrant hues and the sweet perfume of wild flowers. The opulence was quite long away from his usual rustic preferences but he couldn't deny the occasional allure of such refinement.
His gaze wandered through the room, taking in the intricate tapestries and plush carpets. And it was the sight of the canopy bed with that figure nestled within silken sheets that truly captured his attention. A fairy of sensual curves and shimmering wings lay deeply asleep, a vision of peaceful loveliness. Trondo felt a pang in his chest, a mix of longing and regret.
This Peace Keeper was known for their stoicism, his passions simmering beneath an unyielding exterior. As Trondo sat beside the fairy and watched at her naked form bathed in moonlight, he found himself succumbing to a desire he couldn't ignore. The Artisans fairies were renowned for their audacious nature, their willingness to embrace life's pleasures. Trondo had always dismissed such tales as mere fantasy, until he met her. Her fearless approach, her bright smile, had breached his defenses in a way few others ever had.
Memories of their impassioned encounter still burned within him. The push and pull of their bodies, the fervor of their kisses, the sweet surrender. He had let his guard down, allowed himself to be covered in the tide of her affection. And now, as he gazed upon her serene face, he couldn't help but wonder at his own vulnerability.
With a quiet sigh, Trondo rose from the bed, carefully to not disturb her. He moved to a nearby mirror, his reflection staring back at him. His physique, honed from countless battles, seemed revitalized by the magic of their night together. But beneath the surface, a turmoil brewed.
He quickly gathered his belongings, his movements fueled by that growing sense of urgency. Before leaving the room, he took a glance at the sleeping fairy, wishing he could stay longer there with her.
As he navigated the castle's corridors, a question echoed within him: Could he truly embrace this peaceful existence, devoid of the pressures and passions of war? The notion seemed as a capricious as a dream upon waking. He was a dragon from Peacekeepers, his path forever intertwined with the fate of the Realms. His duty was clear: to wield the power of justice, to bring balance through the fiercest of the means.
Stepping into a vine-shrouded balcony, Trondo gazed out at the sea, its expanse mirroring the dawn-kissed sky and touched his own face with a sad expression. His respite had come to an end. The call of battle, of his true purpose, beckoned. With a heavy heart, he spread his wings, the wind whipping his hair as he took to the heavens. The Artisans' serene world fell away, replaced by the familiar thrum of battle, of dust and adrenaline. He was the Assassin, and this was his destiny.
War.

Reader, Plo Married Him (A Short PloKit Fic)
Alrighty, here is my first foray into writing PloKit! (With any luck, it won’t be my last; I love the ship and I would like to keep writing for it if the Muse is agreeable.) If you don’t like Jedi ships, don’t get on my case; if you do, read on!
Plo Koon had experienced many beautiful things in his life.
He’d been to Dantooine, once, and found a system of dramatic waterfalls in a hidden-away park. The grass there was vibrant green and fresh, and the flowers growing next to the footpaths were the most unimaginably beautiful shades of violet. The air mingled together the scents of the blossoms, the grass, the wooden bridges over the streams, and the water itself. He’d stood on one of the bridges, behind a smaller waterfall, and looked into the river; the water was clear, bubbling over a bed of white seashells.
That was beautiful.
He’d been to Orto Plutonia, a snow-covered planet orbited by the moon of Pantora. Wrapped in a heavy jacket, he’d stood on a snowy ridge and watched as the moon glittered down across the white drifts, extending to the horizon and beyond. The air was clear and crisp, even when filtered through Plo’s mask. He knelt down and ran his hand through the snow, watching it furrow beneath his sharp fingertips. It was serene, and it was vast, and it gave Plo the most delightful feeling of smallness.
That was beautiful.
He’d been to the moon Yavin 4, covered in lush jungle terrain. He’d sat in the crook of a gnarled old tree branch, looking at a view of next to nothing because the trees were so dense. At night, he’d climbed down and found bioluminescent moss carpeting the jungle floor, shining the finest shade of magenta he’d ever seen. The sparkling fireflies that hovered in the air, like the moss was dissipating into the air—Plo could’ve sat down to watch those until he was no more than a mass of old bones. The humidity in the air was clingy and warm, and Plo loved the way it felt against his thick skin.
That was beautiful.
But what he was staring at right now? That, without a doubt, was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen.
Before him stood a tall, green-skinned man with tentacles where many species might have had hair. The cream-colored, lace-trimmed robe he wore left most of his broad chest bare. For once, he didn’t have on leggings or boots, either, his slightly-webbed feet bare, the Aurebesh tattoos on his ankles visible.
That beautiful view was Kit Fisto. And for the best half hour of Plo’s life, Kit had been his husband.
Kit leaned on the balcony overlooking the private beach attached to the small cabin they were renting. Plo’s heart fluttered; Kit didn’t have a chance to visit the ocean often, and yet here he was, gazing at Plo instead of the waves.
“What are you thinking about?” Kit asked, extending his hand. Plo smiled beneath his anti-ox mask and walked over to join Kit at the railing.
“The man of my dreams,” Plo answered. Usually Kit said sappy things like that, but if there was one day Plo would indulge, it would have to be his wedding day.
“Oh, do tell,” Kit teased. “Is he handsome?”
Plo ran a forefinger lightly over Kit’s bicep. “Stunning.”
“And clever?”
“Oh, the cleverest.”
“And is he everything you hoped he’d be?” Kit’s tone suddenly became softer, his eyes more searching.
Plo wished he were taller, so he could press his forehead against Kit’s and drive his words home. “Everything and more,” he whispered.
Kit moved his hands to Plo’s waist and lifted him to sit on the railing. “You get your point across fine, when you speak to my heart,” he said gently. Plo, taller now with the added height of the marble rail, leaned his forehead against Kit’s anyway.
The two had left the Jedi Order, for the sake of their relationship. It had taken them both by surprise; they had spent time on missions together during the Clone Wars, now several years over, and slowly they had fallen in love. Both of them had thought about it seriously for a long time, and come to the mutual conclusion that they would serve the Force in their own way, separate from the Order, and allow themselves to become attached at the heart.
Despite the fact that they had left the Order (much to the other Jedi Council members’ disapproval) both felt a serenity that only came from the Force. Kit was fond of saying that the Force approved of their attachment to each other; Plo wasn’t sure he believed it, but it sounded pretty.
Either way, since giving up the Order’s strict code, the two had been more attuned to each other through the Force; since making their bond official earlier that day, Plo could’ve sworn they had become practically one being.
Kit’s gaze flickered across the goggles that Plo wore to keep his eyes from breaking down in an oxygen atmosphere. Kit would’ve gone to a planet more conducive to Plo’s biology, if he had wanted to, but Plo insisted that because he was more used to wearing protective gear, it would be the least bother to do it that way.
Kit did wish that he and Plo could look into each other’s naked eyes, just once. He’d never kept that a secret, and Plo often found himself agreeing with the sentiment. But Kit also marveled, nearly every day, that there was science enough to keep two beings with such different biologies in one home, in one room. He marveled that there was science enough that a man to whom oxygen was poison could sleep next to him on a planet with oxygen in its atmosphere.
“What now?” Plo asked. “The ceremony’s done, but I feel like we’ve forgotten something.”
Kit reached into his pocket. “The rings,” he said, grinning. “On my homeworld, it’s tradition to exchange rings in private, when the guests are gone. It’s symbolic.”
“Of giving your spouse your heart,” Plo guessed, and by the look on Kit’s face, he knew he guessed right. “You have all of mine that you want,” he said, sliding a thin silver band onto Kit’s left ring finger.
“And you have all of mine,” Kit replied, putting a similar ring onto’s Plo’s hand. For Plo, only having three fingers and a thumb, it was worn on the middle finger, as Kel Dor tradition suggested. His talons, and most of the time, his talon guards, were on those fingers. Only with Kit did he go without the guards, and that gesture was as symbolic for his people as the private exchange was for Kit’s.
Plo thought he would’ve been quite happy to marry Kit with no symbolism, no traditions, no ceremony. Five minutes to make it legal in the eyes of Republic law would’ve been enough for him.
Still...there was something magical about the sum of their cultural rites. And there was something magical about the way the sun glittered over the sea as it set, casting orange and yellow light across the water.
Kit hauled himself up onto the railing, and he and Plo turned to watch the sunset. Plo leaned his head against Kit’s shoulder, solid muscle and strong from years of lightsaber training and swimming. Kit leaned his head against Plo’s.
Yes, they had both given up a lot to be in this moment. But that was the thing, wasn’t it; it wasn’t just a moment. For the rest of their lives, they would be able to unashamedly lean on each other, hold each other, and adore each other.
It was worth it.

Tagged by @shellibisshe and @statichvm to take this uquiz for some kids and boy oh boy did it read the ff kids too well. I’m terribly late and so just sending a few tags out to: @belorage @florbelles @unholymilf @adelaidedrubman @confidentandgood @strafethesesinners @jackiesarch @shallow-gravy @themarcspector and anyone else that wants to that hasn’t done it!
Siberite Akagane you leave people feeling nostalgic.
drug store valentine's cards. a favorite childhood song crackled through the radio; secret folded notes to find later. a soft yellow. christmas lights. knowing all the movie scenes that make your best friend laugh. birthday candles. a favorite hot chocolate mug. arcade carpets. lazy sunny saturday mornings. young, but not naive. you give people the sense of being held. falling asleep in the car and being carried safely inside. an acknowledgment that no matter how we age, there’s still something small and reaching within us that never goes away completely. (and that it’s not a bad thing.) there’s something sweet about you that feels hard to come by nowadays. a “they don’t make them like you anymore.” maybe it’s a chance to dip a toe back into childhood or a less pressured place—into imagination again, if even for a short while. a chance your presence gives in allowing people to enjoy it all more fully this time around.
Demos Reyes you leave people feeling inspired.
a moment of stolen breath. aquarium peace, walking through an art museum alone; a mesmerizing chorus of crowds singing along at the concert. turquoise blue. a sunshower. stained glass. paint stains on jeans. finishing a good book. pressed flowers. glasses of wine on your best friend’s balcony, the sun flirting from the horizon. spending time with you is nourishing in a way that feeds growth. it is the creative way you view the world, the way you move through life (whether expressed through dance, writing, music, visual art, cooking, or otherwise) that sparks the imagination of those around you. they watch you translate your experience in the truest form you know how, and they feel inspired to do the same. you seek to find universal understanding through these mediums, and the ones you hold close admire that hunger; maybe also happy to join in and get dirt under their nails, digging to the heart of things.
Anthea you leave people feeling refreshed.
a full exhale. first day of spring, a step into a hot bath; fruit eaten in the sunned grass. a full glass of water. birdsong. a cat napping by the window. the smell of a meadow after rain. deep green. laying with your head in a friend’s lap. coming back home after a long trip. freshly laundered sheets. a rallying force and refuge. both steadying and renewing. feeling your shoulders totally relax. when people are close to you, there’s a sense they can take their shoes off in the safety of your presence. to be unguarded and at ease. feeling safe enough to close their eyes; to rest in the peace and the comfort you offer, though you might not even be aware of it. you might ask people how they’re doing, but what they know you mean is, “where can I help? what do you need?” when the world can be such a tumultuous place, it is no small gift to have support like yours.
Azem you leave people feeling alive.
if I were to emphasize what being an experience is with any personality, it's you. you are a good cackle. a thunderstorm. late-night skinny dip. 85 mph, but getting away with 90. the smell of humid summer nights. sharp silver. a meteor shower. letting go of the handlebars for just a moment. the pop of a champagne bottle. swimming in the rain. another street of city lights to explore. there is a deep hum of possibility, and you want to fly within the jetstreams of it. without testing the boundaries of how far someone will go, you do invite a sense of excitement; never playing into the rush, but delighting in the fact that you don’t have to go far to find it. this life is meant to be lived, and you will do it well.

He knew he hadn't deserved to live a long life, but life was cruel. Or maybe, life was forgiving. It all depends on how you look at it.
Eric, in his old age, smiles down at the family he has created. One he didn't ask for, but one that was made over time. It was his grandchild's birthday and as a request from the birthday boy, he had decided to let them all come here to his home out in the woods of South Park, Colorado.
A change of pace to let his home be used so openly, but a part of him had softened over the years. May it be from his daughter who had grown to be a beautiful women, just like her mother. Wendy, who's companionship benefited the both of them in such a strong, intimate way. Butters, his right hand man who's been with him through thick and thin. And Kyle, the boy from another world that made the mistake of coming to this one. A mistake, that had evolved from a nightmare, into quite a beautiful friendship. It wasn't perfect, but it has taught him a lot over the years. And even though they had been through a lot, Eric could honestly say that he was happy, even if they were just friends.
The sun rays beamed through the trees, making the grass a shade of orange from the sunset. Kids ran around in the open area as friends and acquaintances openly drank and danced to the music.
Hired men had this place surrounded. It's no surprise, Eric was a powerful man. But he had gotten too comfortable on his snowy throne that he called his home. He was the man with all the answers, and if he didn't have them, he sent men to find them or he dealt with it himself. And if he deemed it unimportant, his silver tongue knew exactly how to strike, a silent poison, if you will.
Usually, that alone was his secret weapon, but it was of no help into the oncoming disaster that was karma. A loose end.
As Eric turned towards his bedroom to leave his private balcony, a sharp pain enters right into his chest, meeting the eyes of emerald green so cold that it took the breath from him.
Kyle Broflovski. No, not his friend. Somebody that he use to know. One that he had hurt in more ways than you can imagine. It was a dark time for them both, but Kyle took the brunt of it all.
Their eyes are locked as Kyle shoves him harshly against the wall, a stake still lodged in Erics chest. With every breath, a sharp pain is felt, the shock of seeing Kyle after all these years is apparent, but the red heads expression remains cold.
“Kahl--”
“Do you know how long I’ve waited for this moment?”
Eric's legs feel weak and he slides down, blood streaking down against the wall until hes sat uncomfortably on the carpet, Kyle moving down with him, staying eye to eye.
“I’m not who I use to be. You changed me."
Erics shock melts into a softness of some kind. The eyes that use to bore deep into Kyle's soul all those years ago.. they were different. But Kyle's pain and rage were so wrapped tightly around his heart, he couldn't find it in himself to care, even if it did take him by surprise.
"You've been alive way too long- it's not fair. I should've killed you a long time ago."
Erics breathing starts to slow, his mind in a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts, but nothing could come out. Nothing except a whisper.
"I knew yew would come back for me." And there was a small smile that graced his lips. Kyle's taken aback, mouth agape as he lets Eric go. Before he could respond, a voice is heard down the hall, identical to his own.
"Cartman?" It calls out, getting closer to the bedroom door. Kyle and the brunet stare at each other. A silent goodbye, eyes glossed with so much emotion, that there was nothing and yet so much left to say. The bedroom door opens just as Kyle rushes out the window, making his way down the side of the balcony where he came.
And there stood his long time friend, the boy in the green ushanka hat. His expression falls as he watches his doppelganger escape and he almost moves to run after him, but seeing Eric on the ground with a stake through his chest, he practically stumbles over to him instead, falling to his knees at his side.
"Cartman- What- why-!?" Did he really need to ask why? Should he really be surprised? Was that Kyle who he thought he was?
"Shhh. It's okay-- its--" a cough of blood splatters down to his chin, but it was inevitable. He knew this was it.
Eric grabs onto Kyle's shirt, clinging to it like he's clinging to his life. He's killed so many people, he didn't deserve to have this kind of merciful death. He always thought he would die all alone, with nothing but his thoughts and regrets, forced to play over his shitty life, but there Kyle was, tears brimming those green jade eyes, and it was all Cartman could ever ask for. Somebody out here really did care for him, and it was a Kyle no less. This Kyle.
As he stares up at Kyle's terrified, sad stricken face, he knows he could walk with death satisfied, if it meant looking up at him like this. The way the sunset captivated Kyle's beautiful features, looking at him. But Eric has always been a selfish man so without warning, he pulls him down for a soft kiss. He's kissed Kyle before, usually full of greedy and aggressive lust, but it's been years and this one was different. There was so much behind it. Words left unsaid. As soft as it was, it gradually goes slack and as he takes his last breath, Eric slumps back against the wall, blue eyes faded and lifeless.

Top Artificial Grass in Bangalore Trends for 2024
Synthetic turf is now growing widely used among families and companies in Bangalore. For lawns, terracing or any outdoor utilization, artificial grass is a versatile, cost efficient and enviromentally friendly green solution that requires no maintenance. When it comes to the year 2024, there are new trends in the artificial grass in Bangalore that can fulfill the emerging needs and the trends in landscaping. As technology and design has improved, the choices that artificial grass manufacturers in Bangalore provide are superior compared to before. Self irrigating, no maintenance, water saving lawn has made way to revolutionalize the look of our gardens today.
1. Realistic Grass Species
Among the most popular trends for 2024, artificial grass looks especially prominent as upgraded to ultra-realistic level. Clients are developing a growing interest in products that mimic the original structure of a grass carpet. With the help of modern technologies the artificial grass in Bengaluru looks more like naturals; its texture, color, and even softness. These products are especially suitable for homeowners who wish to have a green lawn but do not wish to do it on their own.
If you are searching for artificial grass that might look very realistic and provide your outside area with a very natural look, Aavana Greens has everything you need.
2. Organic and Biodegradable Products
Given today’s increasing awareness of the environment there is a gradual transition to eco-friendly products like artificial grass. Many artificial grass manufacturers in Bangalore have started using recycled products for manufacturing. These products not only cut the amount of water used and the amount of pesticides consumed, but they also help in curtailing waste in general.
Selecting an environment-friendly synthetic turf from Aavana Greens Private Limited is one of the best ways to go green and still have your turf.
3. Here, the Vertical Grass & Wall Gardens.
Vertical gardening is a growing trend and has a great potential in the climates where there is a problem with space. Self-watering gardens are contemporary and elegant for bringing the outside indoors of a building, on the walls, balconies or terraces. Used both inside and outside, Vertical Garden Bangalore provides an opportunity to create a green area in areas where it is impossible to mow a lawn.
This trend is suitable for giving an environmentally friendly touch to the urban apartments and business spaces or offices.
4. Customized Outdoor Spaces
The final trend for 2024 is that there are more and more people who want to have their own outdoor areas. As the climate changes, there are a lot of demands on how to make terraces, rooftops and garden more special. Synthetic turf allows you to pick the dimensions of your grass, its layout and hue to meet your requirements. You can find a set of designers to develop your outdoor spaces to your preference from Aavana Greens.
This trend also applies to commercial spaces that want to design pleasant outdoor eating areas or plant-filled customer zones.

Vampire Short Story Pt.1
A while back, @roses-red-and-pink was interested in reading a story about a vrykolakas, a vampire from Greek Orthodox folklore. I started writing one featuring one of my original characters, and, since October is upon us, here goes part one.
Rain cascaded like blood from an open wound in the October nighttime dark, and Detective Inspector Deborah Kilroy was racing through the streets of Leicester in her car, clutching the wheel with her pale bony hands and staring at the satnav with intense sky-blue eyes foggy with sleep. She’d woken up at half past one in the morning for this, awoken by a call from Morgan. The traffic light turned green; she hit the accelerate and exhaled a breathy, desperate prayer. A left turn past a row of charity shops and independent cafés and straight ahead. 128 Goodwood Road, she repeated to herself. A few more minutes and the house was in view.
She undid the seatbelt and pulled her ivy-green raincoat over her tall, bony body, tucking her blonde ponytail into her hood. Having exited into the rain, she looked back and forth; no police cars. Walking towards the house, she pinned on her badge, and felt the second one in her pocket.
Before her was a small, compact house of tan-coloured brick with a square balcony over a porch sunken into the wall and a low wooden fence around a grass-filled front garden; it was rather like the house her grandparents lived in. The gate was already open, permitting her to walk down the brick path to the front door. She rang the doorbell, and a few seconds of silence dissipated when the door opened. Standing in the tan-carpeted and white-walled hallway was a tall, heavily-built Asian woman with black hair just past her shoulders and bright red lipstick, beckoning Deborah indoors. Deborah looked at the woman behind her while walking past family photos beside her and the wall, and saw a leather jacket and tight black trousers, the smell of blood emanating from her.
Deborah sat down in the living room on a burgundy pouffe next to tight-drawn white curtains embroidered with forget-me-not patterns, a television atop a stack of white Ikea drawers to her right and a sobbing young woman with her mother’s dark hair in a pale pink nightdress on a blocky red sofa. She breathed in awkwardly, disconcerted by the situation in front of her and the task ahead. Nonetheless, she spoke. “Detective Inspector Kilroy from the PIT. Your names?”
The woman on the sofa retracted her hands from her eyes, revealing a round, adolescent-looking face of a very pale brown, discoloured eyes of a darker hue staring sullenly and sorrowfully at Deborah. “Lucia. And what’s the PIT?”
“Police investigation team”, Deborah spat out mechanically. It was one of many assumed names for the group. “It’s just a nickname we have in the department.” That was the necessary follow-up, lest someone attempt to research them.
Deborah pulled her notepad and pen from her pocket and said, “so, what’s happened?”
The older woman – Mishita, she gave her name as – sat down, shuddered and began talking. “My son was killed by my husband.”
Deborah’s stomach rocked and reeled; even after years of being in the PIT and years more in the police, it always hurt to hear these stories. She looked up at Mishita, whose eyes were now wide and bloodshot.
“And my husband’s been dead for eighteen months.”
Deborah pushed down her shock – she was a member of the PIT, after all – and replied softly. “Describe what happened. Describe it in as much detail as you can.”
Several gasps and tears later and Mishita started narrating what had happened. “I woke up in the middle of the night and … and I heard my son screaming. He’s … he was … he was only eleven.” The tears quickly resumed. “I ran in and switched the light on and … and …”
While pitying the woman, Deborah was glad for the tears; it provided more time to write notes.
“I switched the light on, and there he was on his bed being pinned down … by a man; the fattest man I’d ever seen. And his neck … his neck had been slit open. Blood everywhere. I just … I just froze. And the man looked up at me.”
Deborah laid her pen to rest for a moment and looked at Mishita. “Continue.”
Mishita nodded. “I saw his face … it was my husband. His hair was all the way down to the waist and tangled … but it was him. He moved his hand down to my son’s throat and lick … Licked the blood of his hand.” Deborah nearly retched at the thought, but suppressed it well. “I started backing away, going to call the police … and he lashed out at me. Long sharp nails, cut my throat. And … and … I just ran and ran and left him to…” She collapsed into weeping.
Deborah cautiously asked “Are you ready to share anymore?”
Mishita shook her head. Deborah responded with “can I go to the room?” Mishita nodded.
Deborah finally stood before the door; even outside the room, the stench of blood was palpable. She reached into her left pocket for the blue plastic footwraps used when entering crime scene, and put them on. Breathing heavily, she pulled down the brassy handle on the pale wooden door, descended the step and choked. She looked at the white cupboard, a few flecks of blood visible and a shard of glass embedded in it. Still averting her gaze from the bed, she saw the bare floorboards littered with magazines and underwear and shards of broken glass. Her gaze moved slowly up the bed, seeing a waterfall of dried blood against the white sheets, her eyes tracing it back to its source.
It was a boy with the same dark hair (shaggy, in his case) and light brown skin as Lucia, wearing striped white and dark red pyjamas. But he was sprawled over the bed, his throat cut open along the side, fresh blood pouring onto a marble-hued mattress. The window had been smashed open, releasing the rain into the room, the spots of water matching the spots of blood.
She choked a little, and felt her eyes prick with tears. She recalled Stanhope, her mentor in the police force, murdered before her eyes by an occult monster. She pushed down the memory, subduing it with incantations of “must get the job done”. She pulled her phone out, and dialled Morgan; the woman who had adopted the position of Stanhope as she had been drawn into the PIT.
A half-minute and Morgan’s sharp-edged Welsh voice was heard. “What’s the situation?”
“Standing in the room with a dead kid. From what she said, it’s a vampire.”
Morgan’s voice grew harder. “Yeah, gathered that. What did it look like and do?”
Deborah searched her mind for the descriptions she had been given. “It looked like the woman’s husband; long hair and nails. Drank blood by putting its hand in the blood and lapping it up. Said it was the fattest man she’d ever seen.”
“Is her husband alive?”
“No” said Deborah.
Morgan replied “So d’you know what her husband looked like?”
Deborah responded “also no. I’ll ask her for a photo.”
Morgan hung up, and Deborah slipped her phone back into her pocket. She turned around and walked downstairs, shaking with the visions of the dead boy dancing in her mind.
Mishita and Lucia were waiting downstairs, huddled together, each with a cup of tea in shaking hands. Deborah sat down with them, declined the offer of tea, and began talking, her own voice shaking a little.
“What… what was your husband like?”
Mishita wiped her eyes and spoke slowly. “Not good, not good at all. Usually absent, often drunk, sometimes violent. Had a new scar every few weeks and a new mistress every few months; if my parents and his hadn’t chosen him I would have divorced him.”
Deborah shook her head while her pen hand scrambled over the pages of the notepad. Unhappy marriages, violent lives, trafficking, substance abuse – she’d seen it all. But there was little she could do but be kind and polite and track down the culprits. She was no therapist, but an investigator and hunter – formerly just of criminals, and now of the things behind the veil.
Deborah laid her pen down and looked up. “Can I have a photograph of him?”
Mishita nodded, and walked a little way away. She took a purse out of a bag suspended from a hook near the hallway, and from that a photograph. She walked back, and pressed it into Deborah’s hands. It was a wedding photo, showing an Asian man stocky with muscle – no more than twenty-five, looking at him – with slicked-back hair that terminated at his neck, with his arm around his new wife’s shoulder, both of them smiling. Mishita quietly asked “will this do? Do you want to take it?”
“Yes to the first, no to the second” said Deborah with a tone fit for a funeral, and got up. She shook Mishita’s hand while the two shared a silent gaze, and returned to the dark streets.

Transform Your Balcony: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Perfect Carpet
Balconies often get overlooked as simple extensions of indoor spaces, but they hold the potential to be cozy retreats perfect for relaxation and entertainment. One of the easiest ways to transform your balcony into a stylish and comfortable oasis is by adding a carpet. Carpets for balconies enhance aesthetics, offer comfort, and protect the flooring. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you select the perfect carpet for your balcony.
The Benefits of Carpeting Your Balcony
Adding a carpet to your balcony can significantly boost its visual appeal. Carpets introduce color, texture, and a sense of coziness, making the space more inviting. Beyond aesthetics, carpets provide a soft surface underfoot, increasing the comfort level, especially for those who enjoy spending time barefoot on the balcony. They also offer insulation, keeping the floor cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, and protect the flooring from wear and tear, particularly in high-traffic areas.
Selecting the Right Carpet Material
Choosing the right material for your balcony carpet is crucial, as it needs to withstand outdoor elements while providing comfort and style. Outdoor rugs made from durable materials like polypropylene are a popular choice due to their resistance to moisture, fading, and mildew. These rugs offer various styles and colors, closely resembling indoor rugs while being tougher and more resilient.
For those looking to create a garden-like atmosphere, synthetic grass carpets are an excellent option. They are low maintenance, weather-resistant, and give your balcony a natural, green look. Bamboo rugs are another great choice; they are eco-friendly, durable, and resistant to moisture, bringing a natural, earthy feel to your balcony and being easy to clean. Jute and sisal rugs, made from natural fibers, are strong and sturdy, making them ideal for covered balconies. They add a rustic charm and can handle moderate exposure to the elements.
Key Considerations
When purchasing a carpet for your balcony, consider its weather resistance. Ensure the material is suitable for outdoor use and can withstand sun, rain, and wind. Opt for UV-resistant and water-resistant options to ensure longevity. Measure your balcony to choose the appropriate size and shape of the carpet, whether you aim to cover the entire floor or just a specific area.
Ease of cleaning is another crucial factor. Select materials that are resistant to stains and mold and can be easily cleaned and maintained. The style and color of the carpet should complement your outdoor decor and reflect your personal taste. Bright colors and bold patterns can add a lively touch, while neutral tones offer a more subdued, elegant look.
Installation and Maintenance
Proper installation and maintenance are key to enjoying your balcony carpet for a long time. Secure the carpet using outdoor carpet tape or non-slip pads to prevent it from moving or curling up. Regular cleaning, such as sweeping or vacuuming, will help keep the carpet free of dirt and debris. For deeper cleaning, use a hose or a mild soap solution.
In areas with extreme weather conditions, consider rolling up and storing the carpet during harsh winters or heavy rainstorms to prolong its lifespan. Additionally, rotating the carpet periodically ensures even wear and fading, especially if your balcony receives direct sunlight.
A carpet can be a transformative addition to your balcony, offering both beauty and practicality. By choosing the right material, size, and style, you can create an inviting outdoor space that reflects your personality and enhances your living experience. Whether you prefer the lush feel of synthetic grass, the durability of outdoor rugs, or the natural charm of bamboo, the perfect carpet is out there to suit your balcony needs. Elevate your outdoor space with the ideal carpet – your balcony deserves it!
