"The Hague made international headlines for being the first city in the world to approve legislation prohibiting marketing of fossil fuel-related products and services. This major ruling, issued earlier this month, seeks to limit the promotion of items with a high carbon footprint, such as gasoline, diesel, aviation, and cruise ships. The ban, which goes into effect at the start of next year, will affect both government and privately funded advertisements, including those on billboards and bus shelters throughout the Dutch metropolis.

This groundbreaking legislation establishes an important precedent in the global fight against climate change. Other cities have attempted to limit the reach of high-carbon items through council ordinances or voluntary agreements with advertising operators, but The Hague’s prohibition is the first that is legally binding. It is a major step forward for cities around the world that want to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change head-on.

A response to global calls for action

The prohibition comes after UN Secretary-General António Guterres called earlier this year for countries and media outlets to take tougher action to combat fossil fuel advertising, citing parallels with existing tobacco advertising bans. Guterres stressed that, as with the tobacco industry in the past, fossil fuel businesses are contributing to a worldwide public health crisis—in this case, climate change. Governments can help change public behavior and prevent the normalization of high-carbon lifestyles by limiting their capacity to market.

Several cities have already made tiny moves in this direction. Edinburgh, for example, approved a council vote in May prohibiting fossil fuel-related ads in city-owned venues. The Scottish capital also prohibits enterprises that sell these products from sponsoring events or developing partnerships. However, unlike The Hague’s legislation, Edinburgh’s ban is voluntary and only applies to council spaces.

A legally binding first

The Hague’s new law is significant since it is legally binding. The restriction affects not only specific items, such as gasoline, diesel, and fossil fuel-powered vehicles but also businesses such as aviation and cruise ships. However, the rule exempts fossil fuel firms’ political advertising or efforts supporting a generic brand, allowing these businesses to keep prominence...

The impact of advertising on behavior

Advertising’s impact on consumer behavior is well-documented, and many experts say that fossil fuel marketing undercut climate legislation by encouraging unsustainable behavior. Thijs Bouman, an associate professor of environmental psychology at Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, stated that “fossil fuel advertising normalizes the use of high-carbon products and services, making it more difficult to change consumer habits.” ...

Catalyzing change worldwide

The Hague’s move may have repercussions beyond its borders, spurring similar actions in other cities around the globe. Cities such as Toronto, Canada, and Graz, Austria, are already launching campaigns to outlaw advertising for fossil fuels. In the Netherlands, both Amsterdam and Haarlem have outlawed marketing for climate-damaging products like beef, but these measures have yet to become legislation.

Sleegers believes that The Hague’s move will act as a spur for other towns to follow suit. “More cities have a wish to implement the fossil ad ban through ordinance, but they were all waiting for some other city to go first. The Hague is this city,” she said, predicting that more local governments will now feel empowered to act...

As the world grapples with the rising costs of climate change, The Hague’s pioneering move provides a potential model for other cities looking to minimize their carbon footprints. With cities like Toronto and Amsterdam keeping a careful eye on things, this legislation has the potential to start a global campaign to prohibit fossil fuel advertising. 

More cities may follow suit in the coming years, hastening the transition to a more environmentally friendly and sustainable future."

Superflares once per century

More often than previously thought, sun-like stars hurl huge amounts of radiation into space. The Sun, too, is capable of such outbursts

There is no question that the Sun is a temperamental star, as alone this year’s unusually strong solar storms prove. Some of them led to remarkable auroras even at low latitudes. But can our star become even more furious? Evidence of the most violent solar “tantrums” can be found in prehistoric tree trunks and in samples of millennia-old glacial ice. However, from these indirect sources, the frequency of superflares cannot be determined. And direct measurements of the amount of radiation reaching the Earth from the Sun have only been available since the beginning of the space age.

Another way to learn about our Sun’s long-term behavior is to turn to the stars, as is the approach of the new study. Modern space telescopes observe thousands and thousands of stars and record their brightness fluctuations in visible light. Superflares, which release amounts of energy of more than one octillion joules within a short period of time, show themselves in the observational data as short, pronounced peaks in brightness. “We cannot observe the Sun over thousands of years,” Prof. Dr. Sami Solanki, Director at the MPS and coauthor, explained the basic idea behind the investigation. “Instead, however, we can monitor the behavior of thousands of stars very similar to the Sun over short periods of time. This helps us to estimate how frequently superflares occur,” he adds.

Looking for close relatives of the Sun

In the current study, the team including researchers from the University of Graz (Austria), the University of Oulu (Finland), the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, the University of Colorado Boulder (USA) and the Commissariat of Atomic and Alternative Energies of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris-Cité, analyzed the data from 56450 sun-like stars as seen by NASA’s space telescope Kepler between 2009 and 2013. “In their entirety, the Kepler data provide us with evidence of 220000 years of stellar activity,” said Prof. Dr. Alexander Shapiro from the University of Graz.

Crucial for the study was the careful selection of the stars to be taken into account. After all, the chosen stars should be particularly close “relatives” of the Sun. The scientists therefore only admitted stars whose surface temperature and brightness were similar to the Sun’s. The researchers also ruled out numerous sources of error, such as cosmic radiation, passing asteroids or comets, as well as non-sun-like stars that in Kepler images may by chance flare up in the vicinity of a sun-like star. To do this, the team carefully analyzed the images of each potential superflare - only a few pixels in size - and only counted those events that could reliably be assigned to one of the selected stars.

In this way, the researchers identified 2889 superflares on 2527 of the 56450 observed stars. This means that on average, one sun-like star produces a superflare approximately once per century.

“High performance dynamo computations of these solar-type stars easily explain the magnetic origins of the intense release of energy during such superflares”, said coauthor Dr. Allan Sacha Brun of the Commissariat of Atomic and Alternative Energies of Paris-Saclay and the University of Paris-Cité.

Surprisingly frequent

“We were very surprised that sun-like stars are prone to such frequent superflares”, said first author Dr. Valeriy Vasilyev from the MPS. Earlier surveys by other research groups had found average intervals of a thousand or even ten thousand years. However, earlier studies were unable to determine the exact source of the observed flare and therefore had to limit themselves to stars that did not have any too close neighbors in the telescope images. The current study is the most precise and sensitive to date.

Longer average time intervals between extreme solar events have also been suggested by studies looking for evidence of violent solar storms impacting Earth. When a particularly high flux of energetic particles from the Sun reaches the Earth's atmosphere, they produce a detectable amount of radioactive atoms such as the radioactive carbon isotope 14C. These atoms are then deposited in natural archives such as tree rings and glacial ice. Even thousands of years later, the sudden influx of high-energy solar particles can thus be deduced by measuring the amount of 14C using modern technologies. 

In this way, researchers were able to identify five extreme solar particle events and three candidates within the past twelve thousand years of the Holocene, leading to an average occurrence rate of once per 1500 years. The most violent is believed to have occurred in the year 775 AD. However, it is quite possible that more such violent particle events and also more superflares occurred on the Sun in the past. “It is unclear whether gigantic flares are always accompanied by coronal mass ejections and what is the relationship between superflares and extreme solar particle events. This requires further investigation”, co-author Prof. Dr. Ilya Usoskin from the University of Oulu in Finland pointed out. Looking at the terrestrial evidence of past extreme solar events could therefore underestimate the frequency of superflares.

Forecasting dangerous space weather

The new study does not reveal when the Sun will throw its next fit. However, the results urge caution. “The new data are a stark reminder that even the most extreme solar events are part of the Sun's natural repertoire,” said coauthor Dr. Natalie Krivova from the MPS. During the Carrington event of 1859, one of the most violent solar storms of the past 200 years, the telegraph network collapsed in large parts of northern Europe and North America. According to estimates, the associated flare released only a hundredth of the energy of a superflare. Today, in addition to the infrastructure on the Earth's surface, especially satellites would be at risk.

The most important preparation for strong solar storms is therefore reliable and timely forecasting. As a precaution, satellites, for example, could be switched off. From 2031, ESA’s space probe Vigil will help in the endeavor of forecasting. From its observation position in space, it will look at the Sun from the side and notice sooner than Earth-bound probes when processes that might drive dangerous space weather are brewing up on our star. The MPS is currently developing the Polarimetric and Magnetic Imager for this mission.

Bella Paalen as Fricka; Vienna, 1919

Bella Paalen was born as Isabella (Izabella) Pollak in Pásztó, Komitat Nógrád, in Austro-Hungarian Hungary on December 9, 1881. She was the oldest of the three children of a Jewish couple – Laura Pollak neé Jamnitz, and Ernst Pollak. Ernst was initially a factory director, and later a representative for commercial trade agencies. The Pollaks lived in the Austro-Hungarian capital and Imperial Residence city of Vienna.

Isabella Pollak studied voice at the Conservatory of the Society of Friends of Music. Her voice teacher was a prominent interpreter of Richard Wagner’s operas: Rosa Papier. Her son Bernhard Paumgartner became head of the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

In the autumn of 1905, Isabella Pollak, whose stage name was Bella Paalen, was employed as an alto (alto voice) in Graz. In its 1905/06 season the Graz Opera House was able to achieve brilliant successes under its artistic director Alfred Cavarn.

A sensational highlight was the Austrian premiere of the opera Salome by Richard Strauss in the presence of the director of the Vienna Court Opera Gustav Mahler. Mahler had been unable to produce it himself because of censorship by the Viennese court.

In Graz, the Vienna Court Opera singer Jenny Korb, a soprano, sang the title role of »Salome«. Bella PAALEN was heard in the small alto part of »The Page of Herodias«.

On December 3, 1906, Bella Paalen sang the alto solo in Gustav Mahler’s 3rd Symphony for the first time in the Graz Opera House: an orchestral concert conducted by the composer himself. Gustav Mahler was so impressed by Bella PAALEN that he engaged the 25-year-old contralto at the Vienna Court Opera on September 1, 1907.

Bella Paalen was part of the ensemble of the Vienna Court (and later Vienna State) Opera for three decades. She sang the alto parts »Fricka«, »Erda«, »Grimgerde« and »Norn« in The Ring of the Nibelung opera cycle, »Magdalena« in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, »Brangäne« in Tristan and Isolde and »Ortrud« in Lohengrin – all by Richard Wagner, as well as »Klyt��mnestra« in Elektra and »Annina« in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss along with other roles, mostly small alto parts.

»Annina« was Bella Paalen’s star role at the Court/State Opera: 173 performances between 1911 and 1937. The famous bass singer Richard Mayr also shone in Der Rosenkavalier as »Ochs von Lerchenau«.

Mayr’s birthplace, Salzburg, has a memorial for this. What has been forgotten, however, is that Bella PAALEN was part of the Mayr family’s circle of friends.

After the end of WWI, in 1919, Bella Paalen made her first summer vacation in the Salzburg spa Hofgastein. She was one of the prominent spa guests who participated in charity events and gave recitals every now and then. Bernhard Paumgartner, the son of her singing teacher Rosa Papier, had been director of the Mozarteum in Salzburg since 1917 and he acted as her piano accompanist on one occasion.

In 1920 Bella Paalen’s parents, Ernst and Laura Pollak bought house no. 34 in Hofgastein, called the »Haidenhäusl«. Her parents both died in 1935. Her father first, then soon afterwards her mother during a performance of the opera Lohengrin at the Vienna State Opera, which caused a sensation because Bella PAALEN broke off her performance as »Ortrud« when she learned about her death:… Miss Bella Paalen’s mother, who was well into her seventies, has always been the most attentive fan of her daughter, who is not only one of the most popular members of the [opera company], but also the one who has been here for the longest, namely since 1907. The elderly Frau Paalen wasn’t only nervous, she suffered from a serious heart condition that had made her daughter very anxious when the old lady attended the opera … Kleine Volks-Zeitung, May 19, 1935

Bella Paalen inherited her parents’ house in Hofgastein. Her younger brother, the artist Benedict Fred Dolbin, emigrated to the USA in October 1935. Her youngest brother Otto Friedrich Pollak had died in the First World War as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army.

It has been said that Bella Paalen was honored with the title »Austrian Chamber Singer« in 1933, but that isn’t correct. In fact she only received the title in September 1937 when she was 56 years old and already »retired«.

Bella Paalen was 52 years old when she first appeared in a small alto role at the Salzburg Festival in 1934: as »First Maid« in the opera Elektra. In the 1936 summer festival she had the small role as »Manuela« (the maid of Juan Lopez) in the Hugo Wolf opera Der Corregidor.

The festival audience was able to see and hear Bella Paalen again in the summer of 1937, lastly on August 22nd, as »First Maid« in the opera Elektra – with only a few appearances that hardly received any attention in the reviews.

Bella Paalen made her last glamorous appearance at the Vienna State Opera as »Marthe« in Charles Gounod’s opera Margarethe on July 6, 1937. Irene Harand’s philosemitic magazine Gerechtigkeit [Justice] reported:… The last two performances of the current opera year took place in front of a sold out house; this extraordinary public interest was not only aroused by the guest performances of Elisabeth Rethberg and Ezio Pinza, but also in the farewell to an artist whose whole life and all her strength were dedicated to our company for thirty years … The drastic Marthe was Bella Paalen, to whom the audience gave a roaring farewell with frenetic applause; and when she bowed for the last time, it was certainly not only she who had tears in her eye. What went unmentioned, however, was that Bella PAALEN, who had retired, was Jewish and had not converted to Christianity to further her career. Not coincidentally the reasons why she had been honored only so late in her career remained obscure:Bella Paalen, who retired at the end of the previous season, was awarded the title of Austrian Chamber Singer. Even if this honor came a little late, it will please everyone who is indebted to the artist for great experiences over countless years. Ks. Gerechtigkeit, September 16, 1937

Despite her retirement, the artist was unable to quit her thirty year career so quickly. In the annals of the Vienna State Opera it is recorded that Bella Paalen had two more appearances: as »Palmatica, Countess Nowalska« in Millöcker’s Bettelstudent on October 11, 1937 and as »Filipjewna« in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin on March 11, 1938.

Bella Paalen, who lived in the 1st district, probably left National Socialist Vienna only after the »Reichskristallnacht« pogroms of November 1938. At least it is on record that the 57 year old singer arrived in New York as a »Hebrew« on the transatlantic liner Hansa on January 13, 1939.

Bella Paalen didn’t have any engagements as a singer after her arrival in New York. She was however very successful as a voice teacher. In the 1950s she sold her house in Hofgastein and lived temporarily in Vienna. Her last address was in New York City – on 85th St. in Jackson Heights Queens.

Bella Paalen died at age 83 in the Elmhurst Hospital, Queens New York, on July 28, 1964. Her urn was placed in the Vienna Central Cemetery grave of her parents on December 3, 1964.

The Austrian city of Salzburg, often referred to as the ‘City of Mozart’, is known not only for its picturesque landscapes, lakes, and the nearby Salzkammergut region. On the occasion of their fortieth anniversary, the band plans to celebrate their musical legacy with a series of special events and releases. Last year, Speed Limit celebrated a successful comeback with their sixth official studio album 'Cut A Long Story Short'. The album, which stylistically falls between melodic heavy metal and hard rock, remained in the top 10 of the official Amazon and iTunes Sales Charts for several weeks. The singles 'Hit The Wall' and 'Shine Brighter Than The Sun' competed head-to-head with albums like '72 Seasons' by Metallica in the official German metal and rock charts.

SPEED LIMIT ROCKED THE YEAR 2023

The Salzburg metal institution, led by vocalist and drummer Hannes Vordermayer, bassist Chris Pawlak, and guitarists Joe Eder and Chris Angerer, toured Austria in support of this album. Highlights included a sold-out show on June 16, 2023, the release date of the album, at the Rockhouse Salzburg. They also performed with U.D.O. at the Wildstyle and Tattoo fair in Salzburg.

ON TO NEW HORIZONS

It's no secret that the members of Speed Limit are no longer the youngest, as they celebrate their fortieth anniversary this year. But that doesn't stop them from continuing to race down the rock highway, always in the fast lane. A special highlight is the release of their long-lost album 'The Broken Record: The Chorus Sound Tapes 1990', which was released on April 26, 2024. This release comes a week before the new video and EP 'New Horizon'. That is to say: A week after this nostalgic return, the band will again focus on the present.

The main theme of the EP 'New Horizon' deals with the personal development of a person who is caught in routine yet should always strive for progress, even if he fears change and is a creature of habit. With this anthem, Speed Limit presents a melodic hard rock song designed to inspire people to venture into new things.

The EP 'New Horizon' is enhanced by the song 'Eye On You', which profoundly illuminates the loyalty and connection between two people. This piece impresses with its compositional sensitivity and gripping melody sequences.

The release concludes with live versions of the songs 'Dead Eyes' and 'Lady', which originate from the legendary mini-album 'Prophecy' and were recorded at a concert in Seeham, Austria. A live version of the main title 'New Horizon', recorded on June 17, 2023, at the Rockhouse Salzburg, rounds off the EP and simultaneously provides a preview of the upcoming release of a live album and a concert film for the band's anniversary.

FROM THE PRESENT TO THE PAST – OR: BACK TO THE FUTURE

But the past has also caught up with Speed Limit. On April 26, a musical time capsule was released: With 'The Broken Record: Chorus Sound Tapes', Speed Limit released a long-lost album from 1990 for the first time. This work was originally intended as a follow-up to the 'Prophecy' mini-album and is a true gem in the history of the Salzburg metal formation.

After the entry of guitarist Joe Eder, the future of the band looked promising. Songs such as the fast heavy metal track 'Head Over Heels' and the hard rocker 'Nights Alone', released on later albums, authentically show how the band sounded in the 80s. With tracks like 'Back In Black' and the speedy 'Telling A Tale', Speed Limit demonstrates their skill, frozen in time. Unfortunately, the album had never been officially released before and rested in the band's archives. 'The Broken Record', with the exception of guitarist Hel Lennart, for whom Joe Eder stepped in, was recorded by the successful lineup of the 'Prophecy' album and has now received its official release after 35 years.

SPEED LIMIT A LOOK BACK AT 40 YEARS OF HEAVY METAL

Speed Limit is firmly rooted in the Austrian metal scene and was formed in 1984 by the fusion of the bands Ampere and Speed Limit. The founding members include bassist Chris Pawlak, drummer Andreas "Andy" Rethemeier, guitarists Chris Angerer and Joachim "Jocky" Brunner, and vocalist Hans Huthmann. Their debut album "Unchained" from 1986, known for tracks like "Burning Steel" and "Fight To Survive", initially earned them recognition in the Austrian and German metal and hard rock scene.

In the frame of a crew change, Bavarian frontman Steven Hogger joined the band in 1987, bringing fresh wind to the sound of the Salzburg metal troupe. With Hogger and the new guitarist Hel Lennart, the band released the now legendary mini-album "Prophecy", which further increased the group's popularity. This was followed by performances across Europe and significant TV appearances.

The band was voted the best Austrian metal act by the magazine Rennbahn Express, supported by greats such as Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden and Gene Simmons from Kiss. Concerts with U.D.O., Chroming Rose, and also Girlschool were the opportunities to experience Speed Limit live at that time.

Despite hard work on a follow-up album to "Prophecy", there were delays, and the album was ultimately never released. The disappointment over this setback led to the departure of Steven Hogger, who was replaced by Chris T. Ebert.

The band published its second official album "Perfect Inspiration" in 1992 but could not replicate its earlier success despite a well-attended tour. A farewell concert in 1994 seemed to mark the end of Speed Limit.

However, a successful reunion took place in 2008, with many of the original members, including Steven Hogger, returning. This new formation was seen as a new beginning, not just a comeback.

The reunion led to concerts and tours with Manfred Mann’s Earthband, Nazareth, and Uriah Heep, and a new album titled "Moneyshot" in 2010, which received international recognition. In 2012, Hogger left the band again and was replaced by Manuel Brettl, who did not stay long. In 2017, the band returned with "Anywhere We Dare" and after Brettl's departure, drummer Hannes Vordermeyer took on the role of lead vocalist in 2018.

In 2022, the band signed a contract with the German label NRT-Records, which released their album "Cut A Long Story Short" in 2023. This album reached high positions in the Amazon and iTunes Store charts, as well as in the official rock and metal charts.

Shortly thereafter, the long-unreleased album from 1990, "The Broken Record: Chorus Sound Tapes", was discovered and was released for the first time on April 26, 2024.

Just a week later, Speed Limit is again focusing on the present and future: The band's latest release, the EP 'New Horizon', is released today, May 3, via NRT-Records, the day Speed Limit, along with Apis and Badhoven, rock the Explosiv in Graz.

Anniversary (one-shot)

Ghost wasn't one to celebrate any holidays or special occasions.

But König was.

And since they were dating, he had to adapt in order to keep his partner happy. Because, obviously, he had gotten too emotionally involved and would hate to ruin their stable, somewhat healthy relationship. So they compromised, celebrated everything the Austrian wanted except the lieutenant's birthday. It was the only thing he could not stand, by any means. Painful days full of bad memories should not be acknowledged. Ever. The younger man luckily respected that.

The most important event to recognize was surely their anniversary. They’ve been together for nearly two years now, and the first milestone unfortunately happened to occur while both were on separate missions in two different parts of the world with no way to at least contact each-other.

For Ghost, this wasn’t a big problem, didn’t even think about it too much, too busy trying not to die. König, on the other hand, was utterly heartbroken. Upon them reuniting, he cried, a lot, then informed that missing the first anniversary was a bad sign, and they will surely break up soon because they are doomed. Which was a really stupid, baseless assumption. Nevertheless, the lieutenant ensured next year the date is in the middle of their off-duty period. Just in case. Which involved promising he will do some stuff he didn’t necessarily want to do. Like helping train new recruits or taking over half of Price’s paperwork.

The things people do for love!

Right, love. The emotionless soldier never thought he would use such a term in reference to his own, barely existing feelings. Until the weirdly tall, socially awkward, all soft and mushy Austrian showed up and effortlessly turned his dark, freezing cold world upside down. Proved that loving someone did not make one seem any less scary or vulnerable. Ghost actually appeared to be even more dangerous, now he had something dear to protect.

Which also meant he needed to go that extra mile to make his partner happy enough to not leave him, because if he did, he would have to kill him. And losing König would kill him in return. That’s why he had to agree to participate in the younger man’s undisclosed fantasy for their upcoming anniversary. So they both can stay alive.

The crucial for the success of their relationship day had started with them waking up unreasonably early in the Austrian’s apartment in Graz. Neither was ready to leave the bed just yet, therefore they stayed, embracing each-other’s naked bodies under the cosy blanket. Ghost absolutely fucking adored those rare moments when König rested safely between his protective arms whilst there was nothing to worry about since they weren’t in a war zone but in a normal place, in a regular house, in a comfortable bed big enough to fit both of them.

Sometimes he wondered if this precious time turned into reality, would they still be happy? Probably not. It is truly nice, being in this secure, warm bubble, although it cannot be accurately compared to that intoxicating sensation of being in the field, desperately fighting for survival, and killing your bloodthirsty enemies. Nothing feels as good. Not even sex.

-I need you to let go, love. -the lieutenant whispered softly, loosening the hold around the taller man, who didn’t move an inch, his cheek plastered to the muscular chest.

-Why?! -he whined, making his boyfriend smile. Such a big baby.

-Coffee. -Ghost responded vaguely. -You know I quickly get cranky without my morning coffee.

-I know. -König huffed in annoyance, eventually rolling on the other side of the bed, nearly fully covering himself with the claimed blanket to retain pleasant heat. The Brit got up, and instantly regretted his decision to leave the nice warmth. He swiftly put on some clothes randomly found on the floor and fondly glanced at the steaming burrito as he stretched the stiffened limbs.

-Happy anniversary, my pretty beast. -he hummed once ready to roll, pressing a tender kiss to those ruffled hair before leaving the bedroom. And maybe he didn't see the Austrian's definitely smiling face, but could tell it was blushing furiously. König was naturally terrible at hiding his feelings, which was the sole reason for him wearing the spooky mask on a daily basis. Before knowing better, Ghost thought maybe he was horribly disfigured due to some accident, however as it turned out, he was just readable like an open book, and simply hated that.

Nearly twenty minutes passed before the unmasked soldier showed up in the kitchen, not a single piece of clothing his. Shameful thief. The lieutenant was half-sat on the wide windowsill, nearly empty cup in hand, watching the city slowly start another busy day.

-Took you long enough. -he pointed out, shifting slightly so the other man could fit between his welcoming arms. It was a habit for them at this point, cuddling in the morning anytime they were together to absorb this much-needed affection.

-I'm worth waiting for. -the Austrian murmured, pressing his nose into the Brit's neck. -Thank you for sorting out this time off. It means a lot. -added, softly kissing the muscular shoulder.

-All the best for my precious baby. -Ghost responded, his chilly hands sneaking under the thick hoodie as the cheek rested on his boyfriend’s head. -I love you, —. A lot.

König smiled widely hearing the heart-warming confession followed by his name he used to deeply hate, and recently began to enjoy once again.

-I love you too, Simon.

In the early afternoon, they went to get something to eat, knowing well-enough planned for later activities will drain all their energy. Noida: Marwah Studios recently welcomed celebrated Austrian musicians Silvia Vaterl and Mila Janevska for a special visit and performance, facilitated by the Austrian Cultural forum at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi. How the sun heals after plasma eruption: New findings on coronal dimmings

A research team has presented a mechanism that explains how coronal dimmings—darkened, depleted areas on the sun caused by intense plasma eruptions—recover.

This study offers valuable insights into how the solar corona replenishes after a coronal mass ejection (CME), advancing our understanding of the processes that drive extreme space weather events. With the current solar cycle nearing its peak, these events are becoming more frequent. The study's findings are published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, and the team includes researchers from Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology, Politecnico di Milano, NorthWest Research Associates, the University of Graz, and the Kanzelhöhe Observatory.

Coronal mass ejections are giant, billion-ton bubbles of magnetic plasma that burst outward from the sun, reaching Earth in just a few days and triggering intense geomagnetic storms that disrupt the technology we rely on daily and, ultimately, impact our lives.

As recently as May 2024, an extreme storm forced transpolar flights to be rerouted, and spacecraft had to perform more than 5,000 maneuvers to stay in orbit. The challenge is that detecting a coronal mass ejection in its early stages is difficult; typically, these events are only spotted once they are well-developed and visible to coronagraphs that simulate a total solar eclipse.

However, we can track signs of these eruptions on the sun by observing coronal dimmings—dark regions that appear in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) images of the solar corona that indicate a loss of material during a plasma ejection and offer insights into its mass, speed, and direction.

The team developed methods to analyze the lifetime of coronal dimmings, revealing how and when the solar corona recovers and replenishes after a CME, using long-term, multi-viewpoint observations of coronal dimmings over several days from the onset of the CME.

"Thanks to high-resolution images from the SDO and STEREO spacecraft, we're now seeing coronal loops expand and brighten over dimming regions after CME eruptions. These loops, which appear both before and after eruptions, steadily cover and refill the dimmed areas, revealing the mechanism behind the sun's recovery process," says Giulia Ronca, a study lead author and graduate student of the Politecnico di Milano, who came to Skoltech under the Erasmus exchange program.

"We shouldn't study the signatures of solar active events in isolation," says Galina Chikunova, study co-author and Skoltech Ph.D. alumna, now continuing her research at the Hvar Observatory of the University of Zagreb.

"By extracting as much information as possible from solar images captured by various satellites, we can uncover unexpected relationships. We've observed that dimmings, the traces of solar explosions, often fade more quickly than expected.

"By examining both the darkened and brightened areas of the corona, we've uncovered the ongoing progression of coronal loops—an essential recovery mechanism that helps explain why dimming disappears sooner than anticipated."

"Coronal loops emerge in solar active regions, constantly forming and dissipating as they expand into the upper layers of the solar corona. While these loops are less bright than the surrounding structures, and are therefore challenging to detect, their expansion plays a key role in speeding up dimming recovery," added Skoltech Associate Professor Tatiana Podladchikova, a co-author of the study.

This study sheds new light on eruptive solar phenomena, offering valuable perspectives on the processes that govern the sun's behavior and its stormy mood.
