Raid of the Evil Horde
"We are at Grayskull Con 2024 - and it's time to show my new painting "Raid of the Evil Horde"! Hordak seems to have won this time - or will He-Man manage to avert defeat after all?  The painting is oil on canvas and measures 120 x 80 cm. This is the first time I've painted Mekaneck, and none other than @therealcooperbarnes is under the helmet - my dream cast for this hero.  I hope you enjoy the result as much as I do. For Grayskull!"

Teela vs Arcee - How to Properly Write a Stereotypical "Tough Girl"
Tumblr media
I have been watching/rewatching the 2002 iteration of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and I must say, it is mind-blowingly good. The art is stunning, the acting top notch, and the storytelling is riveting.
It is not without it's bumps, however - the biggest of which is, for me, Teela. However, she is forgivable and believable for her "bumpiness" as a character in stark contrast to TFP Arcee, whose character qualities intrinsically make her grating and not just unforgivable, but unbelievable.
Allow me to explain. @chaoticcreatorgardendean, I feel you may enjoy this.
From the way she is portrayed as a recurring character, Teela is a fine if irritating "tough girl". She does more than in the OG series, has a personality, and actual fighting chops to make her presence worthwhile and important to the story. Despite these superior qualities to her Filmation counterpart, she has a very haughty demeanor towards Prince Adam, the alter ego of He-Man who, while initially more than a little egotistical, now has to keep up said egotistical act in order to keep everyone from realizing he and He-Man are the same guy. Now while her attitude towards Adam makes sense and is understandable (as at the start of the show she saw him "running away/abandoning the team" during an attack when he was in actuality going to become He-Man for the first time), it is still annoying for that to be her go-to temperament when dealing with Adam.
This is not to say that she is completely horrid as a character. It is merely a character flaw that is introduced to make her imperfect, and thus leave open room for character development. That is very good, and the fact that I can find her irritating but integral to the story without wanting to throw her to the moon is a sign of how good the writing for her is.
(I must add, however, as a fan who likes analyzing fictional couples and getting them together, Teela is giving off Not-Safe vibes dating wise for Adam in her treatment of him - all of which is not helped by the fact that she's both more lax with He-Man and wastes no time getting to hold on tight to him when riding Battle Cat with him. She is a good character and a decent woman, but she and Adam definitely need another eight years before courtship begins, at least.)
Then we come to Arcee, and she is everything the writers of He-Man '02 avoided making Teela.
Tumblr media
Unlike Teela, Arcee has no real reason for her attitude and waspish nature towards the team. There's no "running away/abandonment" from members of the group that earns Arcee's sniping of teammates, or anything of the like that causes her compassion to evaporate like Teela's compassion toward Adam did.
Instead, what causes this emotional reaction from our token girl on Team Prime is the loss of her partner/boyfriend - which is made worse when we find out that the exact same thing happened when her first "partner" died.
This shows us that Arcee is a selfish character who throws her pain around and uses it as an excuse to be snappish towards anyone. This is proven the innumerable times she disregards Optimus' orders/advice in favor of either throwing a conniption that broadcasts her mood to others and thus allows her to lash out at her teammates to blow off steam and make herself feel better, or to chase down the ones responsible for killing her boyfriends and getting revenge that she never learns to not hunger for. The more I consider her in hindsight, the more Arcee feels like a cross between an anti-villain and an anti-hero: she's neither a true heroine nor a full villain, because despite "fighting for her homeworld against the Decepticons", she seems to consistently prioritize her own personal desires over that of the team.
The key difference between both women is in their degree of honesty. Teela is acceptable because she is actually honest about her feelings. In part, this is due to the fact that despite being a veteran combatant, Teela has had a safe life all things considered. She didn't see her homeworld destroyed, or lost two "partners" to a war like Arcee did. For this, she has no reason to hide her feelings, and so while her personality is grating, it's a respectable quality all things considered because she doesn't hide her emotional state.
Arcee, though, doesn't have that.
One of the reasons Arcee's not honest is because she equates honesty with vulnerability, and she hates that. She does not want to be vulnerable, lest she get pity and sympathy from others. So, instead of being honest and healthy by allowing herself the vulnerability she actually needs, Arcee prefers to hide her emotions behind abrasive sarcasm and fury.
And this contrast between the two "tough girls" is not made better by the fact that Arcee is a Cybertronian adult while Teela is sixteen years old.
You know you're messed up when the literal teenager has both better moral principles and justifiable reasons for her actions and attitude than you do.
Tumblr media
The biggest reason Arcee is given the greenlight for that attitude is because she's the "girl who broke the gender barrier in Transformers" and the one everybody remembers.....despite six other females appearing in the second season of Transformers G1 before she was even announced to be a planned character.
But hey, she's Hasbro's token girl and pet, so what more should I expect?
That's my thoughts and advice on the matter. Until I have better ones (as in, not me venting a complaint and actively finding something in TF media to gush about for a change), see you around!

Okey probably my last post for a minute cause we're in the throes of midterm season. Anyway, in my He Man AU I'm cooking up, Castle Grayskull wasn't just a castle, but a full-fledged city state. It's design is based on a Minoan Palace. Grayskull was the locus of all magic on Eternia, and people would come from all over to study magic and hewn their skills. I imagine it'd look something like this in its heyday. And if you read all this tysm I owe you my soul 😌
