Massive Attack - Teardrop 1998
"Teardrop" is a song by English trip hop group Massive Attack. Vocals are performed by Scottish singer Elizabeth Fraser, former lead singer of Cocteau Twins, who also wrote the lyrics. It was released on 27 April 1998 as the second single from the group's third studio album, Mezzanine.
In the UK, "Teardrop" peaked at number 10, becoming the group's highest-charting single and only top-10 hit in their native country. It reached number one in Iceland and became a top-20 hit in Australia, Denmark, Ireland, and New Zealand.
The song has been featured in various television programmes, including as the opening theme for the medical drama series House.
"Teardrop" was first developed from a simple harpsichord riff picked out in the studio in April 1997. Andrew Vowles, the main songwriter of this song, originally sent the demo to Madonna as he wanted her to record the vocals (the band had previously worked with her on their 1995 reworking of the song "I Want You"). However, the two other band members Robert Del Naja and Grantley Marshall wanted Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins to record the vocals, feeling her ethereal style suited the mournful melody and feel of the piece. Madonna was very keen to record the vocals, and was disappointed when the two-to-one vote went in Fraser's favour.
"Teardrop" received a total of 73,3% yes votes! Previous Massive Attack polls: #39 "Angel"

Massive Attack featuring Elizabeth Fraser - “Teardrop” (1998) performed live at Abbey Road Studios
Originally, main songwriter Andrew Vowles had wanted Madonna to perform the vocals and had even gone so far as to send her a demo, but he was outvoted by band members Robert Del Naja and Grantley Marshall, who both preferred Fraser.
Fraser, who penned the song’s lyrics, found out while recording the song that Jeff Buckley—with whom she had formerly been involved in a relationship—had disappeared. It was later discovered that Buckley had tragically drowned. In 2009, she said, "[`Teardrop’ is] kind of about him—that's how it feels to me anyway.”

Lyrics:
Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me, makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath
Night, night of matter
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Black flowers blossom
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my
Water is my eye
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath
Teardrop on the fire
Of a confession
Fearless on my breath
Most faithful mirror
Fearless on my breath

Reverberations: Stew Jackson of Massive Attack
Tumblr media
Bristol’s Stew Jackson has a rich pedigree as both guitarist and studio wunderkind. For the last decade and a half, he’s maintained a tight partnership with Grantley Evan Marshall of Massive Attack. The pair co-write and produce for the acclaimed trip-hop collective and other projects. Jackson has also logged hours on the road with Detroit’s legendary mystery man Rodriguez as well as Marc Ford of the Black Crowes. The multi-talented producer dishes on his city’s musical mojo, the BOSS RE-202, and the natural power of delay.

We have noticed there are a multitude of different outfits that can be found under the hard-to-explain moniker trip hop, so we can't be surprised the biggest superstars of the genre fit the brand in their own ways. I mean, the music of Massive Attack, the survivors of the scene, contains many elements that continue to be connected with trip hop, yet they always add their own peculiar touches to the brand, which might be one of the reasons they ended up huge. One of their most famous tune, you can hear the latter in the link, feels a strange fusion of organic and electronic with the live orchestra providing the strength to their moody soundscapes. Moreover, the vocals by Shara Nelson brings this into a liminal place between the desolation and the jubilation.

You're not my eater I'm not your food
Love you for God Love you for the Mother
Eat me in the space Within my heart
Love you for God I love you for the Mother
Mother fountain Or live or not at all
The most level Sunken chapel
Love you for God Oh, love you for the Mother
All's there to love Only love
