How do you think Turning Red improves over Brave? Since John Lasseter is no longer affiliated with Pixar. Brenda Chapman was sadly booted off her own movie due to creative differences with Pixar and Lasseter. Domee Shi was able to tell the story she wants to tell. I can relate more to Mei Lee than Merida who I can not sympathize. Turning Red is also a bit more grounded compared to Brave which is kinda directionless.
Turning Red improves over every thing Brave wanted to accomplish through its own daughter & mother conflict. Turning Red is a lot more introspective on Mei’s mannerisms being so highly learned from her mother, Ming. Domee Shi’s movie has stood out to many, myself included, and clicked so well because she didn’t have someone like Lassester breathing down her neck 24/7. Turning Red is easily a better experience to enjoy for myself, than what Brave could pull off. Which isn’t to say I hated Brave, far from it. Brave as a movie was pretty decent, but lacked that extra OOMPH to make it feel like an animated gem in Pixar’s library. Granted, not every movie has to be excellent to feel like a worthy addition to their franchise, overall. I liked stuff such as what Monster’s University brought to the table. It’s third act alone made that movie so worth watching and added more weight to Sully & Mike’s friendship, making their already excellent first movie even better.
Getting back on topic, Turning Red strikes every emotional beat that was needed to make it successful, given you feel the intimate experiences each person who helped Domee Shomi make Turning Red’s story as endearing as it is. Their documentary they released about behind the scenes added to my admiration for this silly, yet in-depth, exploration of a kid overcoming learned generational thinking having been present in not only her family, but much of their historical family culture, too. Turning Red studies those struggles of Asian family hardships in a humorous manner never shying away from painful underlying context of why Ming is controlling over Mei’s life. She means well in wanting to be close to her daughter, but this mind set stems from an environment Ming’s own mother thrust upon her. Ming was always told the “right” and “wrong” ways in living a happy successful life, which she tried her hardest in passing to Mei.
Brave touched upon traditional family values being challenged, but Turning Red cuts deeper into this core foundation. Mei faces an internal crisis of anxiety from one single question, “What if I end up growing apart from someone I once love and respected?”, brought on by a single conversation from Ming’s mother talking about how they were once close, until the red panda “ruined” their family dynamic. Turning Red doesn’t waste time in utilizing the ideas it wants to accomplish, which is why the third act seriously impressed me. There were plenty of writing seeds planted throughout its zany atmosphere that the dramatic turns it takes don’t feel jarring or out of place for their story they want to tell. Brave falters in this area for me because it had very cool concepts and ideas, much like Turning Red. Unfortunately, it got marred by development hell because of severe creative differences. You can feel it throughout the whole films run time. Honestly, it’s a miracle the film didn’t turn out worse. In a way, Brave stumbled so Turning Red could leap into the air in its own silly graceful endearing fashion.
#turning red#brave#don't hate brave but my God you can feel the production troubles throughout it#turning red on the other hand is simply memorable and highly entertaining#luca and turning red are some of my highlights to have come from pixar in these recent years#i want more kinds of stories like these two films have done!#pixar

Slowpoke Surprise with Spiteful Sludge From Newfoundland
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Despite their chosen name, SLOWPOKE is anything but a slouch. Following in a long tradition of foot stomping sludge bands like Down, Hollow Leg, and Orange Goblin, the St. John's trio has got spit, piss, and ire aplenty (musically speaking) on their self-titled full-length debut.
The record ranges from 10-minute genre busters (opener "Stony Iommi" and closer "Slowpoke") and sassy southern fried hellraisers ("Windtalker") to grungy downcast doomers ("Miami Camo," "Sanctuary") and minutes-long raucous raisers ("Slumlord"). A welcome blast of fresh air from our friends to the North!
Today, Slowpoke invite you to join them on their romping adventures with the single "Sid the Cat." Says the band:
This song is a series of mostly true stories about arguably the coolest cat in downtown St John’s: Sid! He sat in on a few of our jams when the bar Distortion was open and even came to some shows. We were lucky enough to have the great Al Yeti Bones from Age of Wolves, Gypsy Chief Goliath, and many other bands to feature on vocals. He absolutely killed it!
Look for the album 'Slowpoke' (2021) to see the light of day on August 22nd.
Give ear...
LISTEN: Slowpoke - "Sid the Cat"
SOME BUZZ
Slowpoke formed in St John's Newfoundland Canada in 2018 by Ben Chapman-Smith (Bass, Vocals) and Cameron Legge (Guitar). In early 2019 Adam Young (Drums) joined the band. The trio went on to record the bedrock of their upcoming album ‘Slowpoke” and closed the night at Still Heavy’s Midsummer Mayhem 3 festival and were dubbed the “hidden gem of the evening” by Tony Carew owner of Still heavy.
COVID-19 made live performances a non-option in 2020 so Slowpoke went inside and worked away at their release, and applied for a MusicNL Artist development grant which they received in January 2021. Upon receiving the grant Slowpoke enlisted the services of Rick Hollet at Redhouse Recording (sHeavy, Hey Rosetta!) for Mixing and Chris Keffer at Magnetic North (The Black Keys, Cheap Trick) studios for Mastering. Slowpoke is currently performing Newfoundland and has an album release show planned at the Rockhouse in St Johns on August 21st 2021 with The Birchmen and local legends sHeavy.
Slowpoke LP by Slowpoke
Slowpoke’s self-titled debut runs the gamut of heavy genres. It features epic, psychedelic passages that transition to fast punk rock, righteous riffs, fuzzladen doom and some straight up rock and roll. Slowpoke keeps things interesting with progressive songwriting and by drawing from a wide range of inspiration including bands like Clutch, The Melvins, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath and many more.

Instagram Spots in Cape Town
#1 – Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel
ADDRESS: l76 Orange St, Gardens, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Hotel
A luxury accommodation nestled inside a garden estate whilst being overlooked by Table Mountain, the Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel is not only a wonderful place to stay in but also a lovely spot to take photos in given its frosted pink facade! As one of the best Instagram spots in Cape Town, you’ll definitely feel as though you’ve been whisked away to a set of a Wes Anderson movie.
Rest assured, if staying the night is not possible, you can always make an afternoon reservation for their formal tea service so that you can also gain access to the hotel’s well-kept gardens. .
#2 – Kasteelspoort
ADDRESS: Table Mountain (Nature Reserve), Cape Town | TYPE OF SPOT: Hiking Trail
Found on the western slopes of Table Mountain (along the Twelve Apostles side) is this breathtaking hike of Kasteelspoort. It’s actually a bit challenging as you go through rocky terrain, but I assure you: it will all be worth it once you see the picturesque view over Camps Bay and the blue seas.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you must take a photo on the rocky formation at the top that’s called as the ‘Diving Board’ (as pictured above). .
#3 – Chapman’s Peak Drive
ADDRESS: Between Hout Bay and Noordhoek in the Cape Peninsula | TYPE OF SPOT: Scenic Drive
This is often referred to as one of the most scenic drives in the world — and I must say that they are absolutely right on that. I drove on this stretch myself as it runs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, and I have witnessed tons of amazing views that made me do more stops than I thought I would make!
So when you snake through Chapman’s Peak Drive, you should definitely keep your camera ready at all times; but of course, always take great care when driving too. .
#4 – Bo-Kaap
ADDRESS: 71 Wale St, Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Neighbourhood
When thinking of the best Instagram spots in Cape Town, the neighborhood of Bo-Kaap is a must to see. Formerly known as the Malay Quarter township, this colorful part area is found on Signal Hill and is a historical center of Cape Malay culture in the city.
So do make sure to spend some time walking around the pretty colored houses that dot the cobbled streets of Bo-Kaap and you’re sure to find a lot of photo opportunities! .
#5 – Camps Bay
ADDRESS: Bakoven, Cape Town, 8005, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Beach
Known for its white sand beaches, natural rock swimming pool and views of the Twelve Apostles Mountains, the Camps Bay area is a must to visit on your list.
Speaking of the pool, take note of the Maiden Cove Tidal Pools that’s located between Clifton and Camps Bay beaches. It’s not only a nice place to take a dip in but also a great place to have a grand backdrop of the Twelve Apostles. (If you have a drone camera, make sure to take photos from above!)
Otherwise, you will love the natural boulders speckled across the beaches, as well as the posh restaurants and cafes that overlook the promenade. .
#6 – Gondwana Game Reserve
ADDRESS: R327 Heuningklip Farm, Herbertsdale, 6505, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Safari
Looking to check the Big Five off of your bucket list? Head on over to the authentic and luxurious African safari park of Gondwana Game Reserve!
I had the chance to stay there for several nights and I can honestly say that it is the best safari reserve that’s close to Cape Town (you’ll need to drive 5 hours to Mossel Bay, a malaria-free area). Apart from the wild animals that will surely be a joy to see on your feed, you will also certainly love the accommodation’s amenities, African design and interiors! .
#7 – Table Mountain
ADDRESS: Table Mountain (Nature Reserve), Cape Town, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Mountain
Naturally, this is one of the top Instagram spots in Cape Town!
This iconic flat-topped mountain is a significant tourist attraction, and for good reason: it is a gorgeous landmark. To reach the top (Maclear’s Beacon at 1,088 meters above sea level), you can use the Cable Car or hike towards it — some of which are Kasteelspoort (as listed in #2 above), Skeleton Gorge and many others.
Take note that if you take the Cable Car, you won’t be missing anything either since it goes around the mountain. .
#8 – Muizenberg
ADDRESS: Beach Rd, Muizenberg, Cape Town, 7950, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Beach
This beach-side suburb is an amazing surfing spot in Cape Town, and if you’re a surfer, it’s a great opportunity to take some epic photos.
But if you’re not up for that kind of activity, you can always check out the famed colorful beach houses found on St. James Beach! Make sure to come here during the golden hours (early AM or near sunset time) to take that perfect shot. .
#9 – Beta Beach
ADDRESS: 44 Victoria Rd, Signal Hill, Cape Town, 8001, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Beach
Apart from Camps Bay and Maidens Cove, Beta Beach in Bakoven is yet another prime beach location in Cape Town — more so because not a lot of tourists would be flocking over this place as it’s quite secluded (there’s a walkway in Beta Road between the posh-looking houses that lead to this beach). But of course, the views here don’t disappoint!
A helpful tip is to try and take shots by the towering boulders; if not, there are a lot of angles that capture the prominent views of the Twelve Apostles and Lion’s Head. .
#10 – Kloof Corner
ADDRESS: Contour Path, Table Mountain (Nature Reserve), Cape Town, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Hike
Don’t mind the effort if in return you get spectacular views and memorable pictures? Hike over to the classic route that’s called as Kloof Corner Ridge.
It’s steep and rocky, but it will only take 20 minutes; after which you will get to acquire a grand birds eye view of Camps Bay and the Lion Head in the distance. (I recommend coming here before sunrise or sunset!). .
#11 – Diagonal Cave
ADDRESS: Near the Pipe Track | TYPE OF SPOT: Hike
Yet another Cape Town hike, the Diagonal Cave route is just a kilometer off the Pipe Track and it’s a beautiful route that leads you to a scenic Table Mountain cave.
Take note though that this is a bit of challenging route as it’s ragged and steep, but it will all be worth it once you see the view! .
#12 – Cape Point
ADDRESS: Cape Peninsula | TYPE OF SPOT: Viewing Point
Falling within the southern section of Table Mountain National Park is one of the best Instagram spots in Cape Town: Cape Point. This is basically a promontory of the Cape Peninsula and it features mountainous and scenic sights that are not limited to rolling green hills, dashing bays, sweeping cliffs and so much more.
Simply spend some time here and there will be no shortage of great photo spots that can be used as your social media content for weeks! .
#13 – Suther Peak
ADDRESS: Helgarde Rd. | TYPE OF SPOT: Hike
And we’re back with yet another hiking trail called as Suther Peak; but this is one of the lesser-known ones so you’re sure to surprise a lot of your followers, friends and family.
But then again, this is a strenuous endeavor that is steep and challenging so you will need to be reasonably fit to conquer this route; nevertheless, the scene at the top will grant you an epic coastline and view. I’d highly recommend it! .
#14 – Babylonstoren
ADDRESS: Klapmuts – Simondium Rd, Simondium, 7670, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Wine Farm
As one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms, Babylonstoren will be a joyous location to go through for your photos.
With its charming garden, unique accommodation, and interior design among many others, you’re sure to have a lot of people asking you for this undiscovered photo spot. .
#15 – Tranquillity Cracks
ADDRESS: Oudekraal (Nature Reserve), Cape Town, 8005, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Hike
This is a popular 2-hour hike in Cape Town, and its name is derived from the deep fissures in the rocks above Camps Bay through which you will be passing along through the Twelve Apostles.
It will be a tight squeeze but there are a lot of unique rock formations here for your gram (as seen above). .
#16 – Lion’s Head & Wally’s Cave
ADDRESS: Oudekraal (Nature Reserve), Cape Town, 8005, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Hike
Of course, no visit to Cape Town is complete without hiking up to Lion’s Head — a mountain that’s between Table Mountain and Signal Hill, with peaks at 669 meters above sea level.
Along this trail, you’ll also discover a lot of Instagrammable spots as well as a number of hidden caves: one of which is Wally’s Cave which has a perfect view of Table Mountain. Take note though that this cave is off trail with treacherous steps, so take caution.
UPDATE: As of 2019, Wally’s Cave is no longer accessible. It has been permanently closed due to erosion.
TIP: Check out Little Lion’s Head too in Llandudno. .
#17 – Boulder’s Beach
ADDRESS: Kleintuin Rd, Simon’s Town, Cape Town, 7995, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Beach & Wildlife
Apart from its wonderful granite boulders, you will absolutely be smitten with this beach’s large colony of African penguins! You’re always free to climb over the boulders, explore the rock pools and swim in the waters; but please just don’t touch the penguins (if they come touch you, then you’re lucky!).
Either way, more recently, boardwalks have been built and it winds through the dunes and vegetation so that you can have nice spots to look over the nesting penguins and their chicks (when I walked through it, I often saw penguins passing through or sleeping on the side. They were incredibly cute!).
TIP: If you want to avoid the crowd, head over to the nearby Windmill Beach. It may have lesser penguins but it’s a better place to be in. (If you’re into diving, it’s also known for being a prime diving spot!). .
#18 – Kogelberg Nature Reserve
ADDRESS: Kogelberg Mountain Range, to the east of Cape Town, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: Nature Reserve
This is said to be South Africa’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and it is about 7,400 acres along with the Kogelberg Mountain Range. With over 1,600 plant species, it is also said that it has a floral diversity per unit area that is far greater than anywhere else in the world!
That being said, I would highly recommend walking through the park to witness its natural beauty. Besides, you’re sure to find more than enough photo locations to fill up your camera with. .
#19 – Kirstenbosch
ADDRESS: hodes Dr, Newlands, Cape Town, 7735, South Africa | TYPE OF SPOT: National Botanical Garden
Found at the eastern foot of Table Mountain is Kirstenbosch which is one of the greatest botanic gardens of the world.
As one of the top Instagram spots in Cape town, you’ll find a number of gardens here and a large conservatory that exhibits plants from a number of different regions.
TIP: Don’t forget to drp by the picturesque Boomslang walkway. If you want to beat the crowd, come here early in the morning.
TIP: Don’t forget to drp by the picturesque Boomslang walkway. If you want to beat the crowd, come here early in the morning. .
#20 – Stellenbosch
ADDRESS: Stellenbosch, South Africa| TYPE OF SPOT: Town
Stellenbosch is surrounded by vineyards as well as the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg.
As such, it will be best to visit one of the wineries and enjoy its lush and rustic vibe. Some even offer the chance to do a horseback ride through the vineyard like that of Boschendale Wine Farm!
Whatever your fancy is, there is a wide number of Instagrammable places here to fill up your day. .
BONUS – Helicopter Ride
Wanna capture this view? Then hop on a helicopter tour!
There are a number of providers for this activity in Cape Town, one of which is Helicopter Tours Cape Town. .

South Africa’s Top 10 Instagrammable Wine Farms
Fact: There are over 568 wine farms in the Winelands offering first-class views and outstanding wines. So let’s just caveat right at the start to say that picking our top 10 Instagrammable wine farms was no easy feat. Points went to the variety of activities available, location and sheer jaw-dropping power. While each to their own, we don’t think anyone could deny the likes these wine farms would collect on your feed:
1. Bosjes
It’s almost like a mirage. A relative newcomer to the 300+ year old wine industry, Bosjes (meaning ‘small bushes’ in Dutch) is a luxury country estate located in the Breedekloof Valley. When the estate first opened in 2017, the now much-lauded chapel (designed by Coetzee Steyn from Steyn Studio) stole the show on Instagram, thanks to the dramatic glass walls and white curves of the roof. Located just over an hours drive from Cape Town, this gorgeous destination produces wine grapes, olives, peaches and proteas. Besides the avant-garde chapel, there are photo ops all around, including the Chapel Gardens, the Bosjes Kombuis and Tea Garden. A perfect day trip.

2. Babylonstoren
We’d be shot if Babylonstoren wasn’t on our list, as this is the Winelands’ Instagram Mecca. And for good reason too! Since opening their doors in 2010, Babylonstoren has focused on surrounding all visitors with a thoughtfully designed and curated offering. No stone has been left unturned – quite literally. This 200-hectare farm, dating back to 1692, lies in the Drakenstein Valley (halfway between Franschhoek and Paarl). The 3.5-hectare garden is not only beautifully manicured, but it also supplies three award-winning restaurants on the property. Between the cactus garden, the greenhouse, the spa (boasting a stunning salt room built with blocks of Himalayan salt no less!) and the scent shop, your Instagram won’t know what hit it.

3. Boschendal
One thing South African wine farms know how to do very well is to offer more than just wine to its visitors. These days, most wine farms are turning into coveted destinations, ensuring there is something for everyone. Boschendal is leading the way with this concept, offering TWO tasting room spaces (the Cellar Door and Manor House), Die Werf (a fine-dining restaurant) as well as a deli, a farm shop and butchery, a spa, manicured gardens, picnics, mountain bike trails and of course, guesthouses for those wanting to spend more time there. Between all of these activities, there is also a rich history dating back to 1685, when the estate was granted to a Huguenot refugee Jean le Long. But we won’t judge you if you’re just there for a shot in Die Werf’s bathroom – a surprisingly unmissable space for a snap!

4. Beau Constantia
Now, before you start thinking that only places beginning with a ‘B’ are worthy of Instagram, don’t worry – we have plenty of other wine farms from all letters of the alphabet to share! But before we do, let’s give a shout out to Constantia’s little gem – Beau Constantia. After devastating fires destroyed the fynbos and pine forests on the property in 2000, the slopes were cleared and terraced, thereby exposing the great potential for the planting of vineyards. Pierre and Cecily Du Preez purchased the 22-hectare property in 2002, and since then, the striking vineyards have gone on to produce an impressive range of cultivated varieties including Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. What makes this a gem are the sweeping views (all the way to False Bay on a clear day) from the top of Constantia Nek, as well as access to one of the best-rated restaurants in Cape Town, Chef’s Warehouse. The balance between cutting-edge cuisine and a laid-back atmosphere make this an Insta-friendly hotspot.

5. Vergelegen
Don’t worry if you can’t pronounce it – you’re not alone. But that’s not the point of this idyllic wine farm. As South Africa’s second oldest estate, this location is brimming full of history and atmosphere, inviting visitors to take a slow walk around the 17 manicured gardens (remember to take a shot in front of the tree planted in 1700!) or dine casually or top-end at the estate’s award-winning restaurants. What’s extra lovely is that if you have little ones with you, there is an excellent child-friendly playground outside the Stables Bistro, which is not only practical but also designed with good aesthetic and safety in mind. Side note: If you have a chance, book a cellar tour to check out the modern, multiple level, gravity flow cellar first hand! Totally Insta-worthy, trust us.

6. Delaire Graff
There’s good reason for Delaire Graff being known as the ‘jewel of the winelands’ and lands itself as one of our top 10 Instagrammable wine farms. Located between the Hottentots Holland mountains and overlooking the vineyards of Stellenbosch, the estate belongs to Laurence Graff OBE – Chairman of Graff Diamonds Holdings. No expense has been spared in creating a perfectly executed tasting room, spa, hotel, restaurant and retail store. One of the most striking spaces to visit is the heavily-guarded on-site Graff Diamonds jewellry store, which houses pieces comfortably priced in the hundreds of thousands. But for a perfect shot, our recommendation is to sit outside on the Wine Lounge terrace at sunset, enjoying a tasting and soaking in a truly breathtaking view that will have your followers sending you heart eyes.

7. Cape Point Vineyards
When you think Noordhoek, ‘wine farm’ might not immediately come to mind. But as it happens, Cape Point Vineyards is situated at the very end of Chapman’s Peak Drive in Noordhoek. This mountainous location means the venue overlooks the Atlantic ocean, the False Bay coast, as well as a vast area of fynbos leading up to the coastline. The views are nothing less than breathtaking – where else do you get direct ocean and vineyard views? As it’s within Cape Town city limits, this is a great spot to head to for a wine tasting followed by a leisurely lunch, or if you’re up for something a little more romantic, a picnic on the lawn next to the lake (yes, a lake). Hello pretty!
8. Spier
So remember we mentioned how South African wine farms are really good at becoming destinations? Spier is another example. It’s actually quite hard to keep up with how much they have going on – whether it’s an art exhibition (this past summer they had a super Instagrammable ‘Light Art Festival’), a new restaurant opening (Vadas Smokehouse has an American-style pecan nut pie that will make you want to drive out there just to try it), or an Eagle Encounters birds of prey rehabilitation centre, there is A LOT to take in (and take photos of) at one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. Beyond the perfectly manicured gardens, the hotel is found in a cluster of colourful, flat-roofed buildings that are reminiscent of homes in the historic Bo-Kaap – inviting visitors to walk around and get lost in the bucolic beauty of this private paradise.

9. Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines
When you hear the words ‘Mr Singh’ and ‘Franschhoek’ together in one sentence, you know the outcome is going to be nothing short of amazing. And so it is with Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines. First opening in 2016, The Leeu Collection’s founder Analjit Singh partnered in Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines alongside Chris and Andrea Mullineux, the skilled winemaking duo behind these award-winning wines. The Wine Studio, their elegant tasting venue, is housed on Leeu Estates. Upon entering the estate, you will be gobsmacked at how much attention to detail there is across the 68 hectares (168 acres) of landscaped gardens, manicured vineyards and indigenous fynbos. As Mr Singh is an avid gardener himself, the Leeu Collection properties have been stylishly and meticulously landscaped and is worthy of your feed. As is the wine, the spa, the hotel and just about everything else on this pristine property.

10. Spice Route
Last but certainly not least is another Cape Winelands ultimate ‘destination’ – the Spice Route. Named after the historic Dutch East Trading Company shipping route, this restored wine farm houses a diverse collection of artisans that celebrate Cape culture and flavour. While the main call to action is the Spice Route Wine tasting room located in a cosy cellar-inspired space, there is a veritable cornucopia of activity to keep all visitors busy. Start the day with breakfast at Chefs Liam Tomlin and Neil Jewell latest restaurant, Jewell, which has a picturesque view of the Simonsberg mountains. Next up, head for a beer tasting at one of the Cape’s pioneering craft beer breweries, CBC, before enjoying a chocolate tasting next door at DV Chocolate. If there’s room for lunch, try a burger special at Barley & Biltong, before wrapping up the day with a coffee at DV Cafe.

There you have it, our top 10 Instagrammable wine farms!

Clint Frazier’s haircut is about more than hair
Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball includes a prospect’s haircut and more World Baseball Classic action—including a Team USA walk-off.
Listen, we know it’s tough to catch up on everything happening in the baseball world each morning. There are all kinds of stories, rumors, game coverage and Vines of dudes getting hit in the beans every day. Trying to find all of it while on your way to work or sitting at your desk just isn’t easy. It’s OK, though, we’re going to do the heavy lifting for you each morning, and find the things you need to see from within the SB Nation baseball network, as well as from elsewhere. Please hold your applause until the end, or at least until after you subscribe to the newsletter.
* * *
New York Yankees prospect Clint Frazier got a haircut yesterday morning, chopping off his signature red mane in an act which the team documented and promoted as an ordinary act of grooming. On its face, this is nothing surprising or even interesting—the Yankees' strict policies about long hair and beards have been around forever, there's nothing to indicate that they'll be going away any time soon, and there was no reason to think that being a top prospect would grant Frazier any sort of exception to the team rules. But even if this mandated haircut was expected, it's still disappointing.
Much of this offseason has been full of questions about the fan appeal of baseball. This, really, is the issue at the heart of the debates over pace of play and how the league promotes Tim Tebow and so much else that has been widely discussed over the past few months. The question is one of how the sport attracts new fans and keeps old ones engaged. This haircut, then, runs in the face of all that. For all the talk this year about how much national star power that MLB has and what the league does to make those stars household names, there is an unsatisfying answer here—it encourages an environment in which the sort of personality and verve that could help a player catch the attention of a large audience must fall victim to a team-mandated haircut. It's just hair, sure, and it doesn't mean much (if anything at all) to the fans who are already engaged. It might not have meant anything for potential would-be fans, either! But for a sport that's already struggling to properly market its best young stars, stripping away an easy eye-catching feature of an up-and-coming player isn't a good look.
And then there is the fact that the team called Frazier's hair a "distraction." As many people rightfully pointed out, that's rich coming from a team that has overlooked a history of domestic violence in order to willfully employ Aroldis Chapman twice now. That Yankees leadership would encourage fans to "forget" domestic violence while pressing a standard where long hair is a distraction is a sad display of priorities, if an unsurprising one.
The first game of the World Baseball Classic for Team USA ended in dramatic fashion with a walk-off hit from Adam Jones.
Puerto Rico's WBC team has gifted us an infield featuring an embarrassment of riches—Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Javier Baez. They offered up several gems in the team's first game last night, and this diving catch from Correa was among them.
The U.S. won their first game of the World Baseball Classic and has one of the favored teams in the tournament, sure. But they could have been a whole lot better, and Beyond the Box Score now looks at just how much better.
In other WBC news, Sam Fuld's performance with Team Israel has reportedly been strong enough to raise interest from some major league teams, including the Detroit Tigers.
The Toronto Blue Jays suffered a scary moment yesterday when T.J. House was struck in the head by a line drive, but he's reportedly recovering nicely in the hospital.
Chad Bettis of the Colorado Rockies received the unfortunate news that his testicular cancer has spread, and the pitcher will begin chemotherapy in the near future.
Here's a fun hypothetical from Viva El Birdos—what would baseball look like today if league expansion had never happened?
Pinstripe Alley has an in-depth look at Yankees pitchers through the lens of a new version of an advanced statistic.
The Baltimore Orioles reportedly had a deal with veteran outfielder Angel Pagan in place earlier this winter—but a failed physical nixed it.

There are a number of providers for this activity in Cape Town, one of which is Helicopter Tours Cape Town. .

I’d highly recommend it!

Stellenbosch is surrounded by vineyards as well as the mountainous nature reserves of Jonkershoek and Simonsberg.
