#Grandma Maudie

I promise we're working on the next chapter, but in the meantime, have one of the scenes from earlier in the book that lives rent-free in my head:

[Maudie] stands and carries her mug to the sink and rinses it out and stands it upside down on the dishtowel. She turns and leans her back against the counter and says, “Lots of different kinds of medicine, pretty man.”

[Riser] settles on the end of the couch, twisted to watch her. "I'm afraid I don't know them, ma'am. I stick to what I can see."

She hums. “I’m just an old woman. But I think you know some of them. I think you’ve seen some of them.”

He shifts and stirs and says, "Something you said earlier. Sounded like a quote from the Bible."

Her eyes are agleam in the dim light sifting down from the dingy bulb above the kitchen sink. “What did I say, pretty man.”

"To hate your brother is the same as wanting to murder him. Mom used to say that one to us all the time."

She regards him for a moment. “The pretty man’s mother knows the Book. What about the pretty man?”

"No," he says flatly. "The God Mom believes in never had any use for us, and His devotees didn't either. Why would I have any use for Him?"

“How do you know which God He is, if you’ve never known the Book?”

"Mom used to read it to us. Read it out loud. All about how He loves and protects His people." Riser sneers. "But He sure didn't love or protect us. No matter how much we asked. We always had to do that for ourselves." He stirs angrily. "One o' my earliest memories is watchin' my mother sob her heart out on the steerin' wheel and the unborn twins the Sunday after Dad was arrested, when we were told we weren't welcome there anymore. We had friends there an' they looked at us like the scum on their shoes. An' we all spent time prayin' and asking for help but Maxie still had to go work at eight an' we still got beat up at school and we still all got shot and stabbed and cut on the streets. That Book says not to steal, but we'd have all starved to death, and never had anything to wear besides, if we hadn't. So no. I don't care to know any more of it. It might work for rich people in their shiny white churches but it sure didn't work for us."

“Let me ask you something, pretty man.”

"Yes ma'am?"

“You find my granddaughter. No father. No uncles. No brother to take her back from the witch-man. You carry her home and feed her, make her wash off the filth, make her sleep in a bed. You kill her enemies and free her mother. You touch her with love in the palm of your hand.”

Her eyes are like black little coals. “Is all of that better than what the wicked men would have done to her?”

He stares at her narrowly, puzzled. "Yes."

“Why do you know.”

"Because only a coward and a bully picks on someone smaller and weaker. No man worth the name attacks women an' children and innocents."

“How do you know what a coward is? How do you know it is better to be brave? How do you know your mother sobbing on the steering wheel is not better than her laughing in the sun? How do you know it is better to be full than to be hungry? You say only cowards and bullies. You say it is better to be loved and protected than to be hated and abandoned. But a man who rapes says it is better to be sated. A man who buys and sells in children says it is a good trade. Who decides, pretty man? Who has laid these things in stone for you to know, that you might love the coyote-child instead of devour her? There are men who would have devoured her down to the bones.”

He leans back on the arm of the couch, pondering her words, arms folded lightly across himself and fingers drumming on his bicep. "Mom. And Max," he answers finally. "We love them, so it's their codes we keep, their wishes we honor." He grins, sudden and sharp and wolfish. "And not all of them, at that."

“By love you keep the code, pretty man, you are right. Did they write the codes? Your mother and your brother?”

"Mom didn't. She took hers from the Bible," he says unconcernedly. "I don't know where Maxie sourced his. Not from the Bible, that's for certain; he's got no more use for it than I do."

“Seven brothers. Are any of them child-devourers instead of child-keepers, pretty man?"

"No," he says flatly, "Maxie would kill us – not an exaggeration – and none of us want to make Mom cry."

“If one of you were. If one of you raped and killed the ones in the lodge instead of the ones who came for them. Would it be the fault of the code of your mother and brother? Or would it be because of their own wicked heart.”

"It would be their own choice, of course," Riser says flatly. "But if Max were sittin' right there watching his code be broken and didn't stir himself to stop it and help the victim, then that would put him in the wrong, too."

She smiles at this. She draws a polished little hardwood pipe out of her red coat pocket and begins to pack it from a pouch on her quilled and beaded belt. She says, “For the coyote-girl, has He not stirred Himself to help?” She indicates the whole of him with a lift of her pipe, her smile widening into that gap-toothed, gold-crowned grin. She chuckles very softly and turns and shuffles to the front door and steps into her moccasins and slips out the door for a smoke. Riser's soft, highly amused laughter follows her out.

"Me as an angel. That's a new one," he murmurs to himself, settling down to sleep.

Question (and I think I may know the answer but I’m going to ask anyway because why not?!): can you rank the BTS members visually (face and body) according to your personal preference. Feel free to include past opinions that have now changed.

In my opinion I found Jungkook to be the most good looking…but then I started looking at Jimin and Jesus needs to now come save me. Wahala. I don’t think I will be the same. Okthanksbye.

This is the sort of ask I would normally read once, chuckle, read again, then delete. Because what the fuck? Have you seen what they look like?? What kind of question is "rank the BTS members visually"? And then you specified "face and body"? Ma je kin sepe fun ehn o ahn ahn now kilode? But you said "wahala" and I'm feeling sentimental so here's the list for you to tear apart:

7. Kim Taehyung - He's got a nice-looking face. Like the Indian Brad Pitt, but he's Korean, which is somehow even better if you're into k-pop, apparently. I can tell on a cerebral level that he is handsome, but my heart doesn't know it... you know what I mean? His slim build is okay, but even he knows it can be better. I'm very interested in seeing what Taehyung looks like in 2025. I suspect he could go several levels up in my ranking, but we'll see.

6. Jeon Jungkook - The fact I'm ranking Jung Kook sixth should tell people the caliber of visual that is in BTS. All seven of them are mind numbingly hot. No cap. JK is ranked here because despite how hot he is, despite how peculiarly pretty he is, he is still the most baby-faced out of the guys. In my opinion.

5. Kim Seokjin - The shoulders give him several points I'm sorry. I mean, yeah his build is a bit lanky and he could fill out a bit more but still, the shoulders are wide af. I count it towards his overall visual and Jin does have a very Korean handsomeness to him. He's the sort of guy my grandma would want for me... and I know I'm not the only person from my background who has thought so.

4. Kim Namjoon - Joon has the prettiest eyes in BTS. Maybe Jimin ties with him, but Joon's dragon eyes are definitely ranked first in any case. He's worked on his physique too in recent years which has bumped him up my list. I wish he was more coordinated in his motor skills, but he's still pretty decent.

3. Jung Hoseok - Hobi is such a dreamboat. He's lanky but it works for him. The way Tyler Joseph's does for him. But even better than that, J-Hope has stamina. This man is fit. And he is beautiful. Definitively masculine but so delicately pretty. Like y'all don't know what platinum blonde Hobi did to me in 2021. This man is hot and capable and that is a very dangerous combination take it from me.

2. Min Yoongi - Nobody is surprised. I don't even know what to say because I actually bias him. Like I just typed his name out and had to pause to take a breath. I'm keeping it real with y'all rn. I'm that gone. I like that he's a bulldog the whole fandom sees as a cat because that's what he is. I love the music he makes. The way he mixes bass and toplines in all his tracks is incredible. Like, all the lyrics to the chorus of Beyonce's EGO, apply to Yoongi in spades.

...just saying.

Park Jimin - I've said before, he could seem gamine + serpentine + feline + cute all at the same time. It's just fun looking at a face capable of showing so much at once. It's fun looking at Jimin. That's the sort of visual he has. His face is interesting. It is odd in the most benign ways. And by that I mean, most people typically have one definitive facial feature, one that stands out, like a strong browbone, high cheekbones, etc. Really pretty people have maybe two, three tops. For Jimin, his entire face is constructed from distinctive features. I don't want to completely objectify the man by spelling it out for you but Jimin is ridiculously beautiful.

It's just facts.

Jimin has looks. You know what I mean? Jimin has looks where he accentuates certain things. My favourite Jimin looks are some when he looks serpentine, a bit like a snake. Like this:

(The first time I saw this photoshoot I remember I thought, "this is the look of a guy who will go there if there's need to." It's never made sense to underestimate him.)

I'm not sure it needs to be said but I also like his physique the best, whether it's leaner or bigger. Whatever weight he has he carries it well, he moves easily and that certainly adds to his visual. Jungkook too has recently mastered moving through space with ease, I hope what I mean can be communicated, but what I'm trying to say is: a very easy motion with no wasted movements. Anyway, Jimin is best at this, and maybe at a sub-conscious level it adds to his visual for me.

Since the post about my hair, I've been getting anons about my ethnicity so here we go!

I'm Scottish, German, Irish, and Native American!

On my father's side, my grandma Maudie is 3/4 Cherokee and Ogalala Lakota, and my grandfather, I'm told, was half Cherokee, but he didn't get tested like my grandmother did, So we don't know. My grandma had brown hair, tan skin, and brown eyes. My grandfather had brown skin, dirty blonde hair, and blue eyes.

On my mother's side, my grandfather is Scottish with brown hair, and my grandmother is VERY Irish. Ginger, curly hair, freckles, fair skin, all of it.

Standing next to my dad, I look EMBARRASSINGLY white. Like, we hardly even look related. (We are, we tested, and I definitely look like dad.) The Irish washed all color from my skin. I get my blonde hair and blue eyes from my dad, and my freckles and pale skin from my mom.

I never really got to learn a lot about native culture as a kid. Grandma Maudie never told me about anything except dream catchers, and I think partially that's because that's all she knew about. I'd actually really like to learn more about the culture, which is why I always talk to the natives at Missouri Days fair to find out more. I don't know a whole lot about irish, german, or scottish culture either. I just sort of grew up in the Midwest as a baptist (I'm now agnostic) with a slightly southern accent.

TRAITS:

when not weighed down by grease, my hair is naturally curly! It naturally hangs in sort of.. ringlets, when it's long, and an afro when it's short. It's dirty blonde.

I have coffee stains on my eyebrow and my thigh (if you dont know what those are, they're large pigmented patches that are basically freckles that just got super duper huge. Sometimes called Café au lait)

I'm pale most days, but I tan and freckle very easily. Sunburns don't hurt me very much, they heal quickly and I can get pretty dark in the summer.

Disabilities: I have autism, manic depression, and adhd. I have trouble understanding gestures, get overstimulated easily, have auditory processing issues, awful mania, and even worse depression. I also have really bad joints some days, and sometimes need a walking stick or braces because my ankles or hips hurt me. Other days I'm completely fine and actually really like physical activity very much.

I have freckles everywhere. Face, arms, legs, back, chest, everywhere. I can sit outside and watch my skin get new freckles. I get so many fucking freckles in the summer it's ridiculous

I'm fat, but I'm also very strong! I can lift a lot of heavy things.

The carpets match the drapes. My pubes are golden. You didn't need to know that, but now you do.

I have a very specific, very intense color of blue for my eyes.

I have moles! Lots on my arms, and one big one on my hip!

I have natural french tip nails. Pink to white, very stark contrast.

My lips have a cupid's bow and I have very slight buck teeth

My favorite thing: I'm proportionate! I weigh quite a bit, 270lbs, but I've been told that I don't really look very heavy because it's all eventually distributed with fat placement, muscle mass, and bone density.

Anyways, that's my identity. I'm mixed, and feel guilty about it being white because I feel like I don't have a right to call myself native or convert my culture. How original! I bet a lot of people on this site feel the same. About as close as I can comfortably get is being a witch, which I already am, so, uh, yeah! That's all.

Titi, best grandma ever!

Sejak lahir aku tinggal bersama Titi. Jauh dari Mama Papa yang tinggal di Surabaya sejak aku lahir sampai aku TK. Butuh 5 jam perjalanan untuk mengunjungi Mama Papa.  Sampai akhirnya Mama Papa pindah ke Bali sejak aku memasuki SD. Untungnya Mama kembali ke Jember saat aku menginjak bangku 5 SD. Jadi, bisa dikatakan seluruh hidupku selalu dengan Titi.

Sejak aku di Bandung, Titi suka mengirimkan paket berisi sembako, peralatan nyuci, dan makanan ringan. Tidak jarang juga berisi lauk yang awet dimakan selama seminggu. 

Dulu, Mama juga sering menerima paket seperti itu dari Titi. Aku ingat sekali, itu di jaman wartel masih laku dan telepon rumah adalah barang mewah. Aku menyisipkan surat yang kutulis di kertas binderku. Sampai sekarang Mama masih menyimpan surat itu. Aku ingat saat aku kelas 2SD, aku bercerita bahwa aku makan di KFC bersama Pakdhe, Budhe, Maudy, Maura. Aku juga menceritakan bahwa aku dipilih sekolah menjadi Ratu Karnaval, hihi. Surat dengan cerita yang masih polos dan sederhana. Kadang, aku dan Titi mampir ke wartel dekat rumah untuk menghubungi Mama. 

Kembali tentang Titi.

Titi orangnya sangat keras dan disiplin tapi sangat penyayang. Didikannya yang keras itu penuh manfaat. Aku ingat, aku sering dimarahi karena tidak belajar malah main hp atau menonton tv. Pernah suatu hari, aku diguyur air karena ketahuan bolos mengaji. Pernah juga aku dimarahin karena membantah sampai telingaku dijewer. Dulu rasanya ingin segera merantau, jauh - jauh dari rumah.

Sekarang, rasanya ingin dirumah saja. Tidak perlu dijelaskan kenapa.

Sedih rasanya membayangkan Titi dirumah sendirian. Mungkin kalau ada aku, setidaknya kita berdua dirumah selagi Mama kerja. 

Aku ingat semuanya. Sawah, angkutan desa, snack kacang sembunyi, dus Jumbo, ice cream.
