Grandport, Edoras, and Riven "Family Tree"
I thought it would be interesting to construct a family tree for the largest connected family in all of Octopath! And I was right, it definitely was!
!!! Spoilers for most of CotC, including "Bestower of Power" and "Bestower of All" !!!
Tumblr media
It's cool seeing it all connected like this, sometimes a little too connected...
It took every fiber of my willpower not to add Leon or Rembrandt to this. But it's not stated as canon, only implied, so I left them out. Doesn't stop me from shipping both Elletrix/Leon and Rembrandt/Ulrica anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love them so much.
But honestly, since I can, I put their pictures with them anyway.

Botany of Orsterra (From CotC)
The list of foods and cuisines is proving really useful in my writing, so I thought I'd do the same with the plantlife of CotC's Orsterra, too. I'm missing quite a few because I can't review certain Traveller Stories, but I've got a few from notes and the like, and there's a fair bit from NPC dialogue in the various towns.
This is very much a work in progress!
There isn't as much as I thought there would be, since I was only wanting to include Orsterran-specific plants, rather than generic ones like roses or pine trees, unless a specific variety is mentioned in the story.
I haven't checked the memoirs yet either, but I'll be adding to this post every time I find some (or I find Traveller Stories to review on youtube), so thank goodness for the ability to edit here!
Anyway, without further ado, the list:
M = Medicinal B = Botanical E = Edible
Various: Blue Hydrangea {Master of Fame}, Crimson Devilbloom (M) {Ashlan's Tale} A presently illegal medicinal herb, and no-one knows where it grows, although it's been studied in Atlasdam so it may originate there. Thanks to @hazelgatoya for that one! Also, thanks to @theynanigans again for finding the mention in Isla's letters, too: "Day 361: Crimson Devilbloom - "The sickly secretions of that plant cause thinking to take meow-mentous ef-fur-t."
Theatropolis: Lapisleaf (B) {Eunice’s Tale}. Contains a pigment that creates a vivid blue, used in painting. (Edited to add) According to Isla: “When the nectar of these flowers is mixed with pigment, it changes into a striking blue colour. This was a closely guarded secret among painters of old, but researchers eventually discovered this characteristic fur the whole world to know.”
Theatroshroom (E) {??Can’t remember where this one came from??} Apparently, they're very tasty. Edited to add - they're from Adelle's Tale. Thank you, @theynanigans!
Atlasdam: None mentioned.
Rippletide: None mentioned.
Grandport: Quatrait blooms (NPC Woman from Quaragosa) (E) Apparently this can be stewed with fish to create a tasty dish.
Emberglow: Embershrooms (E), used in a variety of dishes. Frostfern (M) {Miles’ Tale}, a compound for a remedy used by the Knights Ardante. Snow Crystals (B) {Sofia’s Tale}, Grace Mushrooms (M) {Rodion’s Tale}, the spores of which are used in a remedy. Cave Mint (M) (E) {Shelby’s Tale}. Shelby's favourite herb, and apparently it can be brewed into a tasty tea. More info from Isla's Letters again: "Day 286: Cave Mint - "Do you know which herb can grow in even the darkest caves, and is useful as an ingredient in both food and medicine? Why, it's cave mint, of course! Hmm… I think next time I have afternoon tea with my cait fur-ends, I'll use cave mint to make tea." Thanks to Theynanigans for finding this!
Frostlands: Züsbaum (E), Per one of Isla’s letters, it grows in the Frostlands and its leaves have a sweet flavour. A tea made from them has a taste distinct from sugar. Many monsters love them, so picking the leaves is a monumental challenge, but many say it is worth the risk.
Also from the Frostlands: Snowstalks (B), a plant that grows in the plains near Emberglow. By soaking cloth in their sap, it can be used to make clothes that are warmer and better against cold conditions. Soaking cloth in the sap of Snowstalks makes it very soft, and will keep people dry. It’s also Lulu’s favourite.
Cathedral of Tytos: None mentioned.
Cragspear: Adorablooms (B) {Main Story}, Apple Blossoms (M) (B) {Therion’s Tale} Spoilers for Therion's Tale, but IIRC Apple Blossom was used in a perfume that helped to control/charm people. Might have different properties in Orsterra.
Valore: White Grape Blossoms (B) {Main Story} A flower sold in Valore, and of great significance to Bargello. Has no medicinal properties that we know of. Wyrmwood (M) {Millard's Tale}, a plant that grows around Valore, and is used in medicine.
Also Valore: Vermiliweed Blossom (B) Features in the main story. "A flower that flourishes in the Woodlands. Contrary to its adorable appearance, it is poisonous and used to hunt wild boars."
Sufrataljah: Drizzleshrooms (M) {Soleil’s Tale}, King Cactus Meat (M) {Soleil’s Tale} Both used in remedies. Drizzleshrooms were boiled with something by a Sunshade tribe to create a remedy, and King Cactus meat is bitter but can bring down Desert Fever.
Victors Hollow: None mentioned.
Sunshade: None mentioned.
Shepherds Rock: Nothing in the area is poisonous, according to Merrit's Tale. Antidock grass grows in the Highlands, and is medicinal (used to make antidotes for poisons.) Also known as Noxroot in other areas of Orsterra. Ephemera is a plant with distinct leaf patterns and purple flowers, and the use is medicinal. (powder from the stems can be used in first aid, and it can be dissolved in hot water to make a cold remedy.) Info again from the wonderful @hazelgatoya!
Flamesgrace: None mentioned.
Berecain: None mentioned.
I’cirlo: Panacea Herb (M) (E) {Former Edoras Ambassador}
Clearbrook: Bellflower (M) {Rita’s Tale} Possibly contains different properties in Orsterra, but I need to review Rita's Tale to see if anything different is mentioned. From Isla's Letters: "Day 312: Bellflower - "Have you ever seen an herb with bell-shaped petals blooming by the riverside? Its characteristics change slightly depending where it grows, so only ex-purr-ienced botanists can identify them!" Credit to Theynanigans!
Redleaf Grass (M). {Penny's Tale} Has bright red leaves, and grows along the rivers in Clearbrook. Waterweed (M) {Rita's Tale, but also mentioned in Hayes' Tale}. Grows along the Clearbrook Traverse, and has bright blue petals. Used in medicinal salves. Isla's letter mentions it as well, as something to use if you get hurt. Laurel Seed Oil (M) {Rita's Tale}. Alfyn uses it to take the scent of tallow away from his salve. "Laurel leaves have a pain relieving compound, and the oil made from their seeds can cool down feverish patches," Rita says.
Donescu: None mentioned.
Edit: From Largo's Traveller Story, we have Blue Poppy (B), a flower that is highly attractive to monsters, Slumbersage (M), a plant with a sedative nature, and Sungrass (B), a plant that Shaggy Meeps like to graze on.  From Isla’s letters: Slumbersage is purr-fect for making medicine to help people sleep, but it’s difficult to get the dosage correct, so don’t try without an apothecary present.
SPOILERS! Edit 2, from Miza's Journal in Bestower of All Ch.5: Marisnows (B), Rosettes (B), Scarletseeds (B).
Arte Shrooms (M), from Dorothea’s Traveller Story. When processed, they are both the cause and cure of an illness in Shepherds Rock. They are both tasteless and odourless.
From Cornelia’s Traveler Story: Snowrosea (M), found in the depths of the Cave of Laments. Can be used as a remedy for Frostlung when infused into a tea. Stilldrop (M), "a powerful herb that grows near the village of Stillsnow. A small dose has the power to cure all sorts of illnesses, but frequent use can lead to a condition similar to Frostlung." It has a sweet scent.
River Beans (E) Phaseolus Lunatus - Lima beans!
From Lemaire's Traveler Story: Phantom Flowers. (B) They grow on the North Theatropolis Plains, and appear a dull grey colour until it rains, when they gain a sheen similar to that of a rainbow.
From Ogen's Traveler Story: Mugwort. An actual plant with many uses, from culinary to medicinal.
From Emberflame Story pt 4: Lumiflower. One of the rabbits wants nectar from a Lumiflower, which grows in the West Valore Countryside.
They also want a Bestiodor Mushroom, which grows by the Great Tree's Tears. When combined with lumiflower nectar it creates a pungent odour that attracts monsters.

So, gay people in my brain. I guess I have some headcanons, though they're not all Tressa/Noa but mostly are related.
-in this Octopath with 100% more yuri, since in my mind Tressa's chapter 4 is (among) one of the first chapter 4's done, Tressa starts sending letters to Noa while on her adventure with the rest of the chapter 4's (honestly potentially even before some chapter 3's but you're not gonna get a chapter timeline out of me or anything). Though she definitely far more enjoys the few opportunities she gets to see her on the off chance they visit Grandport.
-because of this Tressa getting a crush becomes Orsterra's worsey kept secret to the rest of the travelers, because she'd only sent letters to her parents a couple of times and no one else so the sudden increase in letters immediately after her chapter 4 is telling. They don't tell her this for a while.
-except for Cyrus, "they're quite wonderful friends aren't they?", Also taking the Aroace Cyrus headcanons for myself.
-speaking of being ace, Tressa is also ace.
-actually thinking about it I think it'd be funny if Primrose's chapter 4 was right before Tressa's because it makes that bizarre "you'll find a man one day" travel banter actually funny instead of solely being completely random and confusing.
-i guess while this post is mostly about relationships and gay people, I guess I'll throw that I like H'aanit/Primrose and Therion/Alfyn even if I'm not like. Invested in them too much.
I guess that's it? Honestly I'd like some asks about what I think on things in Octopath, because I want to ramble more but I need more of a basis to talk on

There were five people down in the sewers of Grandport.
1 woman with the mark of a crow on her thigh, clutching a bloodstained notebook.
And 4 others, gore everywhere around 2 of them. The other 2 clutched weapons, anger etched on their faces.
Tressa was knelt down on the slick stones, hand pressed over her stomach as blood stained her dress. Ophilia murmured healing spells, but none of them seemed to stop the bloodflow.
Primrose shook with tears and anger as she clutched her dagger, bearing a furious expression. H’aanit had her axe in one hand, Linde’s collar in the other to restrain the leopard, a hunter’s calmness on her face and the rage of Draefendi in her eyes.
Esmerelda laughed, one of her knives stained with crimson blood. She tossed the book to the ground in mockery, kicking it away with her foot as Tressa feebly reached out for it with shaky fingers.
“Face it, kid. You’ve lost. All of you have. I wanted to let you walk away carefree, but you forced my hand. This is your fault,” she snarked, and Primrose trembled with untold anger. “Her fault!? Was she the one who plunged the dagger into her stomach?!? Was she the one who resorted to petty thievery over a fucking book!? Was she the one who mocked someone as they lay festering and dying!? ANSWER ME!” She screamed, cutting Esmerelda’s hand. The crow screamed, dropping her knives. Primrose held her own to her throat. “You will not escape judgement. May the Sacred Flame forgive your sins... For I certainly won’t.”
She sank the dagger into Esmerelda’s neck, and dropped the woman to the ground, instead rushing over to Tressa.
Ophilia had gone deathly still, face pale from effort and-
Gods, no. Please, anything but this. Please...
H’aanit trembled where she stood, looming over the others. Linde rubbed her face against Tressa’s cheek, worry visible in the cat’s face.
Ophilia bowed her head, and Primrose screamed, falling forward. She clutched Tressa’s dress in futility, sobs wracking her body. Tressa Colzione had promised she wouldn’t go down without a fight, and Tressa Colzione had put up one hell of a final struggle.
If only she hadn’t been so close to her dream.
MAVVVVVVV MAV WHY FO YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!!!!!! “IF ONLY SHE HADNT BEEN SO CLOSE TO HER DREAM” STOP!!!!!!!!! IM GONNA CRY!!!!!!!!!!!!! AGH!!!!!!!
I swear if you make a fic for every traveler dying at their final boss… and all of them coming so close to their dream but failing at the last minute,,,,,,,,, I can’t handle this rn

HOOO BOY this is a long one
Rita: are you sure you know what you're doing? I trust Osvald's abilities but Tressa, you're hardly an adult
Tressa: how rude! I'm an experienced traveler! I promise, we'll make it back safe and we'll bring lots of good food
Rita: and apothecaries! Don't forget that... Oh but what if there's more monsters than you anticipated!?
Osvald: my dear, I promise it will be fine. We've planned for the worst possible outcomes
Rita: I- okay. Goodbye, goodluck on your expedition
(after they all hugged and said another round of lovely farewells, Cyrus, Tressa and Osvald were off. When the city gates shut behind them, a dread washed over the trio. The dread disappeared quickly though and they found joy in the little things. Over the four days it took to reach their destination, they met several people living on their own. They suggested those people go to Montwise, which was a great community that was much safer. Some took the advice while others insisted on staying where they were. Regardless, those little interactions reminded the trio that there was still hope. Upon reaching New Delsta, they were shocked to find nothing but monsters. Although, there was a young girl. She could hardly speak, but they eventually learned her name was Mira. Osvald nearly cried at the thought of leaving her behind, he said she reminded him of Elena. Another half day of walking later, the trio (and their new friend Mira) reached Clockbank)
Tressa: hellooo! We're travelers, may we enter the town?
Man on lookout tower: 'course! Newcomers are always welcome!
(some moments passed before he opened the gate, welcoming them in with a great smile. The group all stopped dead in their tracks, in awe of the bustling life in Clockbank)
Cyrus: it's as lively as Atlasdam here! ...Tressa, are you crying?
Tressa: sorry, it just reminded me a little of Grandport
Cyrus: I'm sorry
Tressa: Osterra has been gone for centuries, no point in grieving it now. Come on, let's explore!
(Tressa ran ahead with a curious Mira in tow. They had smelled something amazing from a food cart and simply had to find out what it was)
Osvald: ...Is she okay?
Cyrus: I don't know, it's been hard finding a reason to live when we know everyone we love is gone
Osvald: I can't even begin to imagine how you two feel, I truly wish I could help
Cyrus: it's... fine. I- we'll manage. What's the first item on our list?
Osvald: livestock. Harvey said chickens and sheep but I think we could settle for goats or cattle if- ...Cyrus, you're spacing out again
Cyrus: ...I think I hear an old Hornburgian song
Osvald: ...Hornburg? Wasn't that a country one of your friends was from?
Cyrus: ...Yes, it was
(as though hypnotized by a siren, Cyrus followed the sound. This strange pursuit led him to the square, where several people danced. Upon a stage, a tall man sang while a woman played the lute beside him. People danced and danced, enjoying the music despite not having a clue of the lyrics. Cyrus understood it though, it was an old duet)
Singing man: and so the wind blows and it blows
Cyrus and the singing man in unison: the weather won't kneel for a king, no title will save you from the storm
(the singing and playing came to a slow stop as the man and woman exchanged glances before looking to the source of the second voice)
Primrose: Cyrus!?
Olberic: Cyrus!
(Primrose cast aside her lute, nearly knocking Cyrus to the ground as they laughed and cried. Olberic was close behind and more than eager to join them)
Primrose: how wonderful it is to see you! We feared we would never see another Osterran again!
Cyrus: my apologies, I wish I could have found you two sooner
Olberic: nonsense, our time apart was nothing. You're here now and we don't have to be seperated again
Cyrus: I must tell you, Tressa is here as well
Primrose: oh thank the gods for this blessing! I could live in this moment forever
Osvald: ...I'll go look for Tressa
Olberic: who might you be?
Cyrus: right! This is Osvald! He, Tressa and I came from Montwise to get supplies
Primrose: Montwise? Ah, Castti mentioned that city, you know, the one with the library!
Olberic: yes, that one. I've wondered what it might look like. Cyrus, how predictable you are to choose to live by the largest library in the continent
Cyrus: it must have been fate. You could come with us back to Montwise, I'm sure the others would love you
Primrose: oh, but we'd just grown to love Clockbank
Cyrus: well, then I suppose the decision will have to wait a bit. In the meantime, could you help me find supplies?
Olberic: of course, just about everyone here would be happy to help
(the air suddenly left Olberic's lungs as a far too excited Tressa jumped to hug him. Tears poured down her cheeks though she smiled like a child)
Tressa: OLBERIC!!!! PRIMROSE!!!!!!
(they all laughed and laughed as they ran errands. There was much catching up to do and a great town to explore as well)
Ok so I'd like to continue with this scene but it's getting long so I'll write you a part 2 later lol. I think this one took like 40 minutes to write oops
IM GONNA BE VIOLENT. I HAVE NO COMMENT OTHER THAN AUSUEHSJSHDHRBSAJDFHRHRHRHDHDHDHDHAHAAA

Happy Halloween from the Lord of Grandport!
Naturally, Elletrix dressed as a pirate!
I had a lot of fun drawing her in this outfit again. It's the same outfit I made for her Thief design, which was my favourite one.

Back when the demo came out someone ripped the music files and there were some chapter 2+ town themes in there already but with no ingame context. And I remember thinking, with only the first game's soundtrack as a reference, that the Wellgrove theme kinda sounded like a Woodlands version of Grandport.
Funny how close I got with that impression. :]

The most I’ve done is open up a shop in Grandport and break a capitalist’s knees. I haven’t done anything near as impressive as you.
...Well- maybe.
I'd like to hear more! I also broke a capitalist's knees! Well, kinda.
