A sequel to my fic The Last Charmed One! It's been a while, but I'm working on finishing this, and I thought posting it might give me the kick up the pants needed to get the last few chapters done.

I know Spirit of Justice is guilty of having retconned Apollo's backstory once more and having used his father as more of a plot device that an actual character, but I'd lie if I said it didn't make his mysterious story and dynamic with Thalassa so damn fascinating.

I checked my dumbest moments in Ace Attorney poll and while I’m not surprised that ā€œMaya and Trucy being unqualified to be paralegals/secretariesā€ had the lowest votes, I do want to stress how dumb this really is. I’ve worked in two different law firms for over eight years and, I’m gonna be honest, if the secretaries didn’t know what they were doing, either firm would collapse immediately.
We’re talking about the person who the attorney trusts with running their office. Sending out the subpoenas, drafting documents, uploading documents, maintaining the calendar, taking phone calls, greeting the clients, sending out the bills, doing supply runs and so on. Attorneys can technically do that on their own, but with how busy they can be, that’s why they bring on a secretary/paralegal.
So I’m just saying, it’s insane to me that Phoenix and Apollo decided to put their trust in Maya (a spirit channeler) and Trucy (a magician). Unless Maya can tell the spirits to send out the notice of representation or Trucy can do a magic trick that would upload the case files to their online database, ain’t no way an actual attorney would keep them on.
At least Athena Cykes is a junior attorney! She actually makes sense as an assistant. And she’d actually be allowed in a courtroom!
(This wasn’t supposed to be an ā€œAthena Cykes is best assistantā€ post but it turned into one lol. While I’m at it, Klavier Gavin is the best attorney)

the narrative curve of Miles Edgeworth going from your first case against him (Turnabout Sisters), he's this cool and intimidating figure, he's got everything planned out, everything he says is meticulous and careful. He's scary and frustrating.
But then in the next case (Turnabout Samurai), you start to see the cracks. None of the witnesses he calls follow his plan. They're "objectionable". He has a lot more slip ups. And then when it comes down to it, he reveals his hand. He's looking for justice too. He recognizes who the real guilty party is, and even tho it'll tarnish his near perfect record, he helps Wright catch the killer, and he does this in the most stumbling way ("I thought I would come up with something while I was objecting"). And he talks to you after the trial and tells you that you've really shaken his conviction. Why did he help you when he's working the opposite side?
And the perfect transition from Edgeworth saying "Do not cross my path again", to him being tried for murder and you being the only person who will defend him!! Seeing new players follow these story beats and inevitably--INEVITABLY--they go from hating edgeworth to *missing him* when he doesnt appear in the next game! Like HELLO??

your character designs are incredible! do you keep anything/any thought processes in mind as you draw fanart vs how you draw ocs?
OOOOOO what a fun question...
I'd say my general thought process about how to build a new character-- figuring out who they are and what they do and what they're like-- is all pretty much the same across the board. The main difference between designing fan characters vs original characters is how I answer those sorts of questions.
For original characters, it can be almost overwhelming because I get to choose everything. I can make everything perfectly suited to my own tastes, except I have a broad range of things I like, and my tastes change constantly FJHFHD so depending on the project, choosing a more specific direction helps narrow things down.
Here's some old ocs I redrew recently. They're from an old story I'm not planning on revisiting, but it was about an art student, her little brother, and some grim reapers. Can you tell who is who?
Tumblr media
I wanted the alive characters to have a lot of Opposites from the reapers. Warm vs Cool colors. Round vs Angular shapes. I wanted the reapers to look skeletal and sickly looking, and it was important that they all had some kind of hood. They needed to wear black & grey, but their colors still needed to be interesting, so they're all tinted with a color (one is sort-of blue, one is sort-of red, one is sort-of purple).
The story is more serious, so it felt appropriate that the characters were more realistically proportioned compared to some of the cartoonier designs I tend to do. They're still heavily stylized, and I tried to push myself to go harder on the shape language and Appealā„¢.
For fan characters, it's actually a lot of fun because so much of the work has been done for you. The more source material you have to work with, the less you have to come up with.
So, an example I'm going to use is Hugh Dini, a character I came up with as part of a fan concept for a new entry in the Ace Attorney series.
Phoenix Wright's daughter, Trucy, is a magician. She was 17 in her last appearance, and my fan concept takes place 7 years later, so she'd be 24. I decided she'd have a boyfriend who is also her assistant, and went from there.
I knew Hugh was going to be a defendant, which according to Ace Attorney rules means that he'd be falsely accused of murder. I needed to create a guy who was sympathetic, someone that you'd WANT to help prove his innocence.
Tumblr media
What I did was reference existing characters from the games who fit similar archetypes and took a lot of design cues from them. I also referenced characters like Fukuo from Kiki's Delivery Service, who is a delightful himbo wifeguy that looks a little intimidating but is actually just kinda shy. And then I looked at actual photos of stage magician costumes for additional inspiration. THEN I go back to the source material to compare design details I want to add (ex, Hugh's high collar, his cuffs, the collar, the cape being turned into fringe on his jacket) and see if it already exists somewhere. No point in reinventing the wheel if I don't need to!
Tumblr media
I wanted him to be like a "sexy magician's assistant", which I thought was a funny contrast to his restrained demeanor. He needed to be flashy, but not TOO flashy that he'd upstage Trucy. And additionally, since this is a game series where the characters are mostly seen from the waist up, I tried to keep his most interesting details in the top half of his design (but honestly in hindsight, I could have given him more. like Zak Gramarye's thigh-strap belt bag, perhaps).
Some other things I like to do when creating fan designs is to "roleplay" being the designers of the source material. If concept art is available, I reference that. I like to find the design quirks the character designers favor, and use them to make my own designs more convincing. If I'm designing something for, say, a european tv show that came out in 2005, I'd refer to the fashion and design tendencies that were most prevalent in the culture then, because that's what the actual character designers would have been most inspired by. But I'm not perfect, I'm gonna have the biases of an american lesbian living in 2025 no matter how hard I try LMAO
Hopefully I was able to answer your question!

Okay, I’ve been considering it for quite a bit and I think that if Tumblr existed in Japanifornia… most of us would probably not be aware of the series’ main characters.
Like, lawyers just don’t tend to be high-profile publicly-known figures. Even within True Crime communities or the coverage of high-public-interest cases, people don’t tend to focus on the lawyers as much more than a representative of the defendant and the legal system as a whole. And yeah, you can say this is just because real-life lawyers are Boring and if they did the kind of Bonkers Shit AA Lawyers do we would pay attention to them… but we do actually have textual evidence that Japanifornia treats lawyers not-too-differently than real life.
Tumblr media
Mia’s murder, and probably the uncovering of all of Bluecorp’s dirty dealing, was highly talked about, but Phoenix’s actions in court went kinda ignored. And note that this is the case where Phoenix literally defended himself and broke the Demon Prosecutor’s five years winning streak, and that wasn’t enough to draw eyes to his part in this whole case.Ā
And that’s also generally consistent with how characters treat Phoenix throughout the rest of the games. By the AJ Trilogy era, it’s clear that Phoenix has made quite a name for himself… in the legal world. If you are yourself a lawyer or another sort of legal professional or just unusually interested in court proceeding, you know the name ā€˜Phoenix Wright’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But if you’re just a regular person who cares about the law the Regular Amount, you probably have no idea who this is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So I’d guess most of Japanifornian Tumblr would probably be aware of a lot of the cases in the games, especially considering how many of them concern, like, corporate corruption and organized crime and legal corruption and international politics and the entertainment industry and other such stuff that makes it likely to get national/international news coverage. And also so many of them are so bizarre and wacky and are thus prime meme fodder…
Tumblr media
But most people wouldn’t necessarily know the name of the lawyer the Nickel Samurai blackmailed to defend him after he ordered an assassin to kill the Jammin’ Ninja, or even how involved that lawyer actually was in Matt Engarde’s downfall.
But there would probably be a small mini-fandom of Tumblrina Lawyers and other legal nerds who are ABSOLUTELY obsessed with the WAA, and trying to collect any piece of info they can find about their adventures.Ā
(That’s also another aspect to consider, the general public in Japanifornia does not have full knowledge of everything we get to see in the game. News coverage of the smaller cases would be extremely minimal and very regional - and even the bigger cases probably won’t give you a full line-by-line record of everything that happened in Court. Apollo Justice was, like, the Biggest Phoenix Wright Stan in the Universe and he had very choppy and partial knowledge of the Gramarye Trial. We have to consider that even folks who are trying to keep track of the AA Lawyers in-universe would not get the full picture from the media. And that’s before we get into fake news and rumors.)
And meanwhile, the rest of Tumblr would probably treat that Fandom the same sort of bemused delight we give to, like, the extremely dedicated gimmick blogs. Like, you’d probably see less posts about Phoenix and Co. as you’d see posts memeing about the fact there’s a Tumblr Fandom for ā€˜some random law agency in Japanifornia’, they’d be like five thousands people in the notes going ā€œThere’s a Tumblr Fandom for WHAT? WHY IS THIS THE FIRST TIME I’M HEARING ABOUT THIS??ā€ and then one person from the WAA fandom going ā€œNO YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND THIS IS THE GUY WHO UNCOVERED THE PHANTOM HE’S JUMPED OFF A BURNING BRIDGE ONCE YOU LITERALLY TALKED ABOUT A TRIAL HE DID YESTERDAY YOU JUST DON’T KNOW HE WAS INVOLVEDā€.Ā
Now, that’s all for the Defense Attorneys. The Prosecutors have a bit more publicity. I mean, Phoenix literally heard about Prosecutor Edgeworth on the news.
Tumblr media
But also… I do think this publicity is highly regional. Like, Phoenix ended up stumbling on newspaper coverage of Miles because he lives in the same city as him. I’m guessing that most of the series’ Prosecutors are at least casually known not just to Legal Folks, but also generally to people within Los Angetokyo and people involved in Japanifornian Politics… but also not much outside of that sphere either. Again, the series does establish that they are not that well-known amongst laypeople even when they are famous amongst other lawyers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And are generally recognized by fellow legal professionals and journalists and people involved in criminal activity. So the situation with them won’t be that different than with the WAA, they might be a tad more high-profile, depending on how many Tumblr users are specifically from Japaniforina and wanna make memes about the local politics… but those who will get really invested in their misadventures won’t be that different from the kind of people who’d get really into Phoenix Wright.Ā
Klavier is the obvious exception. Like most Famous Lawyers, he’s actually primarily famous for something other than law. It’s just that in his case, instead of politics, it’s being a world-famous rock star. There’s plenty of textual evidence that the Gavinners are an actual household name and they’d probably have a pretty sizable Tumblr Fandom, but… well… while I assume any casual Gavinner fan knows that Klavier is also a Prosecutor, I’d guess only the insanely dedicated fans and the Haters looking for something problematic would actually start digging into the records of the cases he worked on. But then again, Tumblr does have a lot of insanely dedicated fans and Haters, so maybe Legal Misadventures Involving Klavier would be kinda mainstream on Japanifornia Tumblr.

Wait. Hold on. Is van Zieks the only (main) prosecutor in the Ace Attorney series explicitly mentioned to not have a perfect win record before facing off against the protagonist?
We don't know how Simon's win record is iirc (although I feel like it'd be safe to assume he has a perfect win record), I think Nahyuta is implied to have a perfect win record (although I might be wrong), Edgeworth, Manfred, and Franziska had perfect win records until they went against Phoenix, Godot didn't have a win record to speak of, and Klavier had only prosecuted one trial before prosecuting Wocky's trial, and I guess technically nobody won the Zak Gramarye trial? Nobody really lost it either though. Like it basically ended at a standstill, and I feel like Klavier would view finding the truth in a trial as a win anyway, so it's debatable if he's ever lost a trial in his own mind.
But the whole reason the Reaper of the Bailey exists is because van Zieks lost trials. He's the only prosecutor that I remember who is explicitly stated to have lost trials before going against the protagonist.

Thought about what her design would be like in her 20s, bc I wanted to include her in my AU where Phoenix sees ghosts and I think she’d haunt Trucy bc I love the theory that she’s an ancestor in the Gramarye family with the power to perceive.
Artists commentary including spoilers under the cut
Tumblr media
Ghost vibe, anyway I thought she deserved a cloak with a dramatic collar like her uncle Barok, which also inspired the gold details. She’s technically nobility but she prefers the title of ā€˜Doctor’ to ā€˜Lady’.
Tumblr media
Closeups of the Sholmes emblem, making the gear a little less obvious since her whole thing is the flower. Also hearts.
Tumblr media
I really wanted to play with the design of her goggles into glasses and added the pink part as a reference to the blood detecting glasses from Ema Skye, I feel like that’s something she’d invent lol. Also it’s really small but the earring is her flower in Ryunosuke blue with the Mikotoba touch of cherry blossom petals.
Tumblr media
Her hairstyle is based on this concept art that I thought was really cute. And I added the longer curl in the middle bc that’s what Herlock has. Also the bunny ears cowlick that she has gets passed down to Trucy.
Anyway I think she has a gun and since she’s a van Zieks, she also gets a sword. Or a cute little dagger with hearts all over it. I love her vibe of being the adorable little girl who is related to a serial killer/ assassin and the guy known as ā€˜the reaper’ bc that’s just so funny. She’s also the smartest person the the AA series and they had to nerf her by making her 10 during the story.

So, because I've been working on this series again, I've been getting back into Charmed a bit, and I decided to do something I've been wanting to do since I was, like... eight? And that is to figure out exactly what the Warren Family Tree actually looks like... given that the one we see in canon has some laughably incorrect dates on it.
(Getting birth and death dates wrong on incosequential people I can forgive (Grams' brother apparently married a woman born in 1870-something? It's not impossible, I suppose? She's probably a demon or something.) but what I can't forgive is that they messed up the details of the crucial plot point of that episode that the family tree was made for. (Phoebe gets the family tree out to look up their past lives, and lo and behold, the family tree tells us that Prue's past life died after she was born.))
Still, it's the only real canon information we get about everything between Prudence Warren and P. Baxter (who is Grams' mother. Somehow, I don't think the creators thought through the implications of that. Piper was raised... by a woman she raised. Even if she doesn't remember it, that's still gotta be a bit of a trip if you think about it too hard. Like, do you think Grams learnt the 'keeping her hands busy in the kitchen' thing from her mum? And then teaches it to Piper, who is her mum...). Anyway! That's... over two hundred years unaccounted for, and I don't do well in a creative vacuum. Blank page paralysis is real and devastating.
So I did my damnedest to decipher the very blurry screenshots I managed to get off ITVX, and...
You know another mistake they made? The Charmed power is a female power, and given the show's rather, uh, unconsciously gender-essentialist approach to girl power, it boggles my mind that the family tree is still so patrilineal? Apparently, the Charmed Ones aren't even descended from Prudence Warren? They're descended from her little brother instead? What? How did that get past anyone involved in the process?
But! I jiggled some things around so that the line from Melinda to Prue is an unbroken line of women (trans inclusive!), and discovered that they also, to no one's surprise, didn't put any real thought into the rest of the dates on this thing! In order for all the generations I could see on the family tree to fit into the timescale given, a lot of these ladies were having kids, uh... quite young.
And, sure, one or two, I'd accept, even the majority being under 25 given the social mores/life expectancy/infant mortality of the times, but... I've got a whopping seven (out of fifteen) generations who were 18 or under when they had their first kid. It goes up to eleven if it's 20 or under.
I was really tempted to take a generation out. There's a few that are just one girl baby after another towards the end there, so I could've just whipped one out and rejiggled the dates, but for reasons to do with symbolism and also perfectionist nonsense (I may have been flipping genders left and right, but just toss the dubious canon info out the window?! Never! -rolls my eyes at myself-), I was reluctant.
And then I thought:
Technically, that spell up there that I wrote is a curse. A death curse, even. And I've since decided that both Prudence and her daughter also cast it on their deathbeds, it's a Threefold Death Curse. Because, well, on rewatching a bunch of episodes to check historical dates including, specifically, the one with Melinda's birth in, I was reminded that the Charmed Ones aren't just... extremely powerful witches, but The Most Powerful Witches Of All Time. As in, Eva cast a spell to summon the most powerful witches, and got the Charmed Ones, so it's not just a cute title.
(Now, given Charmed's dubious worldbuilding, you could say that's the Elders sticking their grubby little hands in and doesn't actually mean there will never be a more powerful witch than Prue, Piper, and Phoebe, but I'm going with, no, Eva cast her spell, and magic itself decided Prue, Piper, and Phoebe were what she was asking for.)
So yeah, whatever made the Charmed Ones the Charmed Ones has to pack a mean-ass punch.
Threefold Death Curse it is.
Which means that... Actually, there's an in-built reason why all these Warren Witches are getting pregnant as soon as they discover what sex is. They're literally cursed.
Melinda, dying, grasping onto her vision of her descendants as a last spark of hope: "...My line will continue unbroken, to my daughters this gift I now give..."
Every single future generation, in a chain of faulty pills, broken condoms, inconsiderate lovers, accidents, and possibly worse: "Fucking thanks, Mel" /sarcasm
(Also, we stan P. Baxter, who fought the curse for a whopping thirty-three (33!) years before popping out our beloved Grams. This even while fucking two (2!) guys on the regular for a while there. No wonder she was destined to be reborn into one of the most powerful witches of all time, she was already kick-ass even without that power-boost. The next oldest was Prudence Warren herself, and since that's before the curse got tripled ("Fucking thanks, Prue"), I'm quite satisfied with that.)
Apologies for vanishing again~ ^^ā€ August has been a Hell Month for me, cause I managed, somehow, to break my ankle at the beginning of the month, and let me tell you, that has been an Adventure (and not the good kind). Writing is just not a thing I want to do when I’m having multiple-panic-attacks days alongside eight-hours-in-the-hospital days (the two are not unrelated). And spiffing up my writing for posting is even futher down my list of priorities, so, it maybe another month or so before I get any new writing posted (but! I’m pretty sure I do have a whole completed fic ready for editing and posting once I’m ready to get stuck back in =D)
That being said, I did get a creative itch after a couple of weeks of not touching my writing, so I started digging into some plotting/research I’d been putting off for the sequel to my Charmed AU, The Last Charmed One. (For those of you who remember that/are hoping for the sequel, I have about half of it fully written, but things didn’t go exactly to plan, so I had to re-adjust the entire second half of the plot to compensate… Which I have now done! =D And unless I go nuts at some point between now and then, I’m thinking I’m going to make finishing it my NaNo project this year, so… -fingers crossed-? =D)
Anyway, all this is a prelude to the fact that, in jiggling my plot about, I re-encountered a note I’d made about the… mechanics of the Charmed power in my ā€˜verse. And this may end up being spoilers somewhere down the line of this series (like… I think it might be part of the plot for book… seven? eight? Something like that…), but given that I have no real guarantee that I’m ever going to get that far, I figured I could throw it into the void now anyway?
Random Charmed/Gramarye backstory ahead (with bonus spell!):

Going through the Apollo Justice Trilogy has made me such a Thalassa Gramarye apologist. Especially after seeing how she’s portrayed in fanfics.
It feels like so many people write her off as a negligent parent who’s hiding the truth from her kids on purpose. Guys, she was literally written out of the series by new writers who didn’t want to deal with the backstory AA4 set up. Characters are not autonomous people, they don’t get to choose what to do. Why blame the character instead of the writers who forgot about her in favour of their own ideas for a new game?

Lemme rant for a quick second bc omg. (Spoilers for Phoenix wright AA, Justice For All (briefly), Trials and Tribulations (briefly), Apollo Justice AA, and Duel Destinies)
So I just got done playing Duel Destinies, right? And I appreciated the experience, the music was great, Athena was great, the Klavier callback was great, and so on. DO YOU KNOW WHAT WASN'T GREAT?! THE FACT THAT THEY WON'T MENTION KRISTOPH GAVIN EVEN ONCE.
Now I understand this is pretty much a non issue in terms of general gameplay but it's a HUGE issue in terms of story!! Like, I understand that they're probably not trying to spoil the past game for any new players (even though I'm not sure who starts at DD but whatever) but that's not even an excuse because in Justice for All, they outright said Manfred Von Karma was in jail and dead!
Furthermore, I wouldn't even be ranting about this in the first place if it was a lesser culprit like Matt Engarde who had zero greater importance in the later series, but Kristoph is objectively the most important culprit in Ace Attorney!! According to Duel Destinies itself, the dark age of the law was started mostly thanks to two events: the UR-1 incident and Phoenix's disbarment. You'd think that someone who contributed to this damn near decade of legal corruption would be mentioned a bit more?!
But no! Literally they dance around this man's name more than Edgeworth does with Phoenix in AAI. Even then, at least he got "that man." Kristoph is treated like everyone collectively forgot about his name and face. Sure, you could argue that they talk about everything he did as vaguely as possible without giving spoilers but that's arguably worse! Duel Destinies full on brought back Klavier, showed a full clip of 3d beanix that the devs put time and effort into modeling, and showed a quick clip of the gramarye trial AND YET NOT ONCE DID THEY TALK ABOUT THE MAN WHO CAUSED IT DIRECTLY!!
Not only is that a cowardly move in the writing room, it's also limiting character growth for multiple characters! I understand that Duel Destinies isn't about Kristoph but instead about introducing Athena as a character, but Turnabout Academy was PRIME TIME to have even a single line about him directly. Klavier, Apollo, and Phoenix were in the same damn room!! Athena could've left for a moment to go find more evidence and the player would get to be in Apollo's POV. And I'm not asking for a whole 5 minute conversation about Kristoph because even I think that'd be a little too much, I'm just asking for the characters to either address him in passing or for Klavier to literally say ANYTHING about his brother at all. They are in the midst of a legal breakdown and they can't have a single line of dialogue about how Klavier strives to undo what Kristoph (and himself by proxy) has done to the legal system?!
No one can tell me that wouldn't give him so much more depth! Same thing goes for Apollo and ESPECIALLY Phoenix! Don't get me started on Phoenix. Honestly, I'd think he'd have the most to say about the man who literally ruined his life for 7 years but apparently not! Apparently seeing black psyche locks on your employee that you've only seen ONE OTHER TIME on ONE OTHER GUY doesn't warrant a flashback or something!
Again, I genuinely wouldn't be so pissed off if this was about Matt Engarde or Dahlia Hawthorne or something, but love him or hate him, Kristoph is a vital culprit in the Ace Attorney series as a whole. Without him, there'd be no 7 year gap, Trucy wouldn't have gotten adopted by Phoenix, The Magical Turnabout probably wouldn't play the same, the concept of black psyche locks would only show up in Duel Destinies, Klavier would be a shallow character, and probably even more aspects depending on what angle you look at it from/how the player interprets the effects of Turnabout Trump and Turnabout Succession.
Maybe this is a non-issue and I'm ranting for nothing. Maybe I'm biased because Kristoph is my favorite character in the entire series. I don't know. But what I do know is that the way Duel Destinies piggybacks off of Kristoph's actions and cannot be bothered to actually address the elephant in the room is actually disgusting. It's like talking about the "I Have a Dream" speech and then not saying who gave it. And I just feel sad for the character development that could've been with Apollo, Klavier, and Phoenix. But I get it. Duel Destinies is Athena's game. So why beat a dead horse?
