Sophie holding Keefe while he's sleeping (he was exhausted and she's making sure he gets sleep) and Grady walks in on them
he's about to freak out but she shushes him agresssively because Keefe needs sleep and looks at him worriedly to make sure he's still asleep
Grady looks at both of them and his eyes soften before he walks up and gives Sophie a kiss on the forehead and Keefe a gentle shoulder squeeze and tells Sophie she should get some sleep too

I really wish that Sophie was a pyrokinetic because the plot has SO much potential.
The Ruewens would have to get over their fear of fire and anger towards pyrokinetics (imagine them finding Sophie asleep while engulfed in flames and all they can think of is Jolie). Sophie would need to get over her own trauma with fire because of her kidnapping and seek training from the Neverseen with Brant and Fintan (pre-Lodestar). Dex would need to face his own trauma as well because he wants to be there for his best friend. Fitz would have to face the fact that Sophie was a bad match for him and they might lose the ability to be cognates. If she got the ability later, the Council might have kicked her off of Team Valiant or reconsidered the ability restricter. Oralie would have to address her anger towards pyrokinetics and trauma from Kenric’s death while trying to support her daughter. Sophie would also gain an interesting perspective from having the most hated ability and possibly start to understand the Neverseen, especially Fintan given his backstory, a little better (which would terrify her.) Bonus points if the ability was an accident and the Black Swan didn’t plan for it.
The pure angst of it all would have been so cool to read.

ruthlessness is mercy — chapter two!!
read here on AO3
this dedicated to max @crescentpaws whos birthday it is!!! this is for you bud <333
thank you so much benn @aurenflare for help on the weiting here and fin @fintan-pyren on fintan's characterization!
——
Due to your status as an Emissary, and in order to protect your identity as well as the cause, you will be known as Psych and will be advised to wear your hood at all times. We at the Neverseen oppose the Council, but it is always beneficial to have friends in high places.
— Vespera
Grady stood at the mirror, looking at his new cloak.
His new uniform. For being a boring gray color, it was rather stylish. Especially the large eye on the hood obscuring his face and black embroidery. Another hooded figure entered the room and leaned against the doorframe.
“Fintan wants to meet you,” a steady yet energetic voice said, filling the room.
Gradu shuddered at the name. All he knew was that Fintan was a Pyrokinetic, and Pyrokinetics were dangerous. Then again, who was he to judge? “And who are you?” Grady asked, whipping his head around.
The figure walked into the room, “I could ask you the same thing.” Grady could tell that he was smiling, even under the hood. “I’m Ruy. Psionipath.”
“I’m Psych. Uncreative, I know.” Grady chuckled a bit.
“Well, what's your ability?” Ruy asked.
“Mesmer,” Grady sighed as he rolled his eyes underneath the hood.
He was waiting for Ruy to exit the room, leaving him alone once again. Except this time, he didn't seem to care. “Our leader is a Pyrokinetic. We have a Shade. You're just part of the Neverseen now, the more stigmatized the better!” Ruy laughed, and under the hood Grady smiled ever so slightly. Not being judged felt nice.
“Now,” Ruy continued, “time for you to meet Fintan, he does not like to be left waiting.”
——————————————————————————
Grady looked among the stands— watching, hoping they would show up. What kind of family misses their son’s first Bramble Championship?
Grady’s family, apparently. They were still holding a grudge against Grady, for something he didnt even do. It had been about a decade since he manifested. They've spoken to him around four times since then. At this rate, they weren't his family anymore, they were the people who were housing him.
As Grady thought, he felt the rage boil up inside of him. Even though he hated the feeling, he found that his anger could serve as a powerful motivator to win. The anger he felt towards his ‘family,’ the anger he felt towards elvin society’s discrimination, and the anger he felt towards himself for still not being satisfactory enough— even despite his Bramble prowess.
Before he could let his anger burst, he reminded himself to save it for the game.
The referee blew the whistle, and the championship started.
——————————————————————————
“So, you must be the new member that Vespera recruited.” Fintan’s legs rested crossed upon his desk, while he snapped his fingers and made a tiny flame appear and disappear.
Grady awkwardly bowed, “Psych, at your service.”
Internally, Grady felt a storm of emotion, all boiling and wanting to burst. He had heard of Fintan Pyren, the tales of horror he knew. He was the reason Pyrokinesis was banned. However, there was a part of Grady that sympathized with Fintan. He knew what it was like to have an ability that caused so much harm, but never to that extent. At his core, there was almost a sick curiosity— fascination, even, with Fintan's story. He wondered if there were situations where Mesmerizing could be banned, and, despite his complicated relationship with his ability, the last thing he wanted was a ban.
He knew he would fight against it, and he knew if one was in place, he would rebel.
Like Fintan.
So, there was a bit of a curiosity there— but it was mostly horror.
“Don’t be shy, take a seat!” Fintan motioned towards the two chairs and Grady reluctantly sat down. “You don't need to use codenames with me,” Fintan smiled, “that’s a frivolity that Vespera insists on.” He paused before laughing a bit. “She didn't give you a letter, did she?”
Grady nodded. ”Then… I'm Grady, sir.” He wasn't going to give his last name in case it signaled who he was.
“May I see the letter?” Fintan asked as Grady fished it out of one of his uniform’s pockets.
Grady handed Fintan the card.
“Rule number one— never leave a papertrail.” Fintan reignited the flame and held the letter above it, but it didn't burn. “Unless you're making a statement. And, of course, have approval.”
Grady shied away from the flame, to which Fintan frowned. “Don’t be scared— it can only hurt you if I want it to. And I don't want you to get hurt.” He showed Grady the letter, which didn't even brown. He put the letter back over the flame, and this time it practically exploded.
Grady watched the flawless execution— the graceful showmanship— that Fintan had demonstrated with the flame. He felt a part of him studying the flame itself, how it flickered, even the color. He was trying to distract himself from the other, darker part of him that was studying Fintan's movements, trying to decipher how he controlled the flame. Studying Fintan himself. He was thinking about whether it was possible to control flame through Fintan. He didn't want to, fire terrified him. If it meant stopping the flame however, then it could prove useful if anything even got out of hand.
If he ever needed to escape.
“Do you give all the new recruits a personal greeting?” Grady asked.
“Just the promising ones. Vespera told me about you. You harmed her?”
“I cut her cheek, yes.” Grady admitted. He expected disappointment from Fintan, since Vespera was another leader of the Neverseen.
Instead, another smile spread across his face. A vicious one, almost. Yet there was a scarier feeling attached to this smile. Understanding. Sympathy, even. Fintan cocked his head to study Grady. Grady felt shivers rush down his spine as he was observed. After what felt like hours, Fintan spoke. “I’ve never met an elf so young so…accustomed to violence.”
“It’s a gift.” Grady shrugged, having no idea how he should take the comment. Compliment? Coming from such an infamous elf, he had no idea how to take it.
“You’re frightened by your own power, aren't you?” Fintan asked Grady.
“I thought this was a meeting, not an interrogation.” Grady stated. Then, he added “plus, you don't even know what it is.”
“Why don't you tell me then? I’ll understand.” Fintan offered out his hand, much like Vespera did. Except there was a key difference between his offer and hers. His offer felt sincere, an offer of comradery as opposed to business.
“One last thing. Vespera didn't tell you?”
“You can't trust anything Vespera says nowadays.” Fintan kept his hand extended for Grady. Eventually, Grady grabbed his hand and answered quietly. “I’m a Mesmer, I'm afraid.”
“What is there to be afraid of?” Fintan chuckled. “Rule number two, never be afraid of your talent, Grady.” He released Grady's hand and showed him a small fireball. “See, once you're able to not just control— but understand your ability— great things await you, my friend.” There was a glint in Fintan's eyes. Whether it was the fire or the insanity, Grady was unclear. “I want you to snuff the flame.” Fintan said, a certainty that could kill.
Grady’s eyes bugged wide. “Excuse me?” The words came out far louder than he intended, and he clapped both hands over his mouth. “I apologize, sir… I just have obviously never tested against a Pyrokinetic before, let alone an Ancient. What if something goes wrong?”
“Then make me want to extinguish the fire— like how I crave flame, you crave control. With how disciplined I've heard you are, nothing will go wrong.”
Grady was beyond confused. Why would the most infamous elf known to history want his fire gone— even temporarily? The next few seconds were a blur to Grady. All he knew is once he located Fintan’s mind, there was a soft warmth. And then, it was gone. So was the flame.
The only thing more terrified than the look on Grady's face was the look on Fintan’s. However, it quickly morphed into something far more terrifying. A twitch of a smile.
“Welcome to the team,” Fintan said with a slight shakiness in his voice.

Alright so l saw a few people on the internet saying that Sophie Foster is a pick me because she doesn't like make up ,gowns,or anything figuratively feminine.STOPP.I am on full fledged mamma bear mode.Because, pick me is a term used to describe someone,a girl in most cases (i think)who puts down other girls or claims that she is different, to get more attention(from guys.)And Sophie Foster is nothing like that.Sure she doesn't like to wear gowns because she doesn't feel comfortable in them. And come on if you have to wear a 3-5kg gown everyday, every hour of the day, then you would be uncomfortable too.The other elves in the series don't mind it that much because they have always lived like that, and those who feel uncomfortable switch to tunics like Sophie did,and there is nothing wrong with that. You should wear what you are comfortable in.About accessories and makeup,it's clearly stated that Sophie hates make up and fancy accessories(dramatic pause) because she doesn't want to stand out.Sophie has always been uncomfortable with attention (till the last two books)and just wants to blend in with the crowd. She doesn't like the attention that comes with dressing up, because she doesn't want to stand out.And another thing,Sophie never criticised other girls for dressing up.She never put them down to get attention.Like she doesn't think it's WRONG to dress up or attract the crowd. For example,Sophie has always admired Biana for her fashion sense and beauty tho they both have very different styles.Sophie respects Biana's fashion and doesn't judge her for being girly nor does she EVER compare herself to other girls in a narcissistic manner to prove how different she is from "other girls."She is NOT a pick me and DOES NOT give "l'm not like these other girls at all" vibes.Thank you.
